Single-molecule nano-optoelectronics: insights from physics

Single-molecule optoelectronic devices promise a potential solution for miniaturization and functionalization of silicon-based microelectronic circuits in the future. For decades of its fast development, this field has made significant progress in the synthesis of optoelectronic materials, the fabrication of single-molecule devices and the realization of optoelectronic functions. On the other hand, single-molecule optoelectronic devices offer a reliable platform to investigate the intrinsic physical phenomena and regulation rules of matters at the single-molecule level. To further realize and regulate the optoelectronic functions toward practical applications, it is necessary to clarify the intrinsic physical mechanisms of single-molecule optoelectronic nanodevices. Here, we provide a timely review to survey the physical phenomena and laws involved in single-molecule optoelectronic materials and devices, including charge effects, spin effects, exciton effects, vibronic effects, structural and orbital effects. In particular, we will systematically summarize the basics of molecular optoelectronic materials, and the physical effects and manipulations of single-molecule optoelectronic nanodevices. In addition, fundamentals of single-molecule electronics, which are basic of single-molecule optoelectronics, can also be found in this review. At last, we tend to focus the discussion on the opportunities and challenges arising in the field of single-molecule optoelectronics, and propose further potential breakthroughs.

Conductance Switching in an Organometallic Single-Electron Transistor Using Current-Constrained Reduced-Density Matrix Theory

We report switching of molecular conductance at finite bias in a binuclear organometallic complex and its cation which were previously experimentally analyzed at low voltages to see the signature of Kondo resonance. The variational reduced density matrix theory is applied to show that the system is strongly multireferenced especially in its charged form. We also study the molecular conductance of both forms using recently developed current-constrained two-electron reduced density matrix theory which is capable of handling strong electronic correlation. We compare the results against an uncorrelated 1-electron reduced density matrix version of conductance calculations using Hartree-Fock molecular orbitals. We observe that despite quantitative disagreements, the qualitative trend in the conductance is correctly predicted to be favorable for the cationic partner by both methods. We explain the results using the inherently high density of states for the low-lying excited states in the cationic partner which is also replicable from uncorrelated electronic structure methods. Our results not only indicate that the low-bias conductance trend is maintained even beyond the Kondo regime and produces quantitative agreement with that of the experiment but also identifies important physical markers that are responsible for the high conductance of the charged species.

Analytic expressions for the steady-state current with finite extended reservoirs

Open-system simulations of quantum transport provide a platform for the study of true steady states, Floquet states, and the role of temperature, time dynamics, and fluctuations, among other physical processes. They are rapidly gaining traction, especially techniques that revolve around "extended reservoirs," a collection of a finite number of degrees of freedom with relaxation that maintains a bias or temperature gradient, and have appeared under various guises (e.g., the extended or mesoscopic reservoir, auxiliary master equation, and driven Liouville-von Neumann approaches). Yet, there are still a number of open questions regarding the behavior and convergence of these techniques. Here, we derive general analytical solutions, and associated asymptotic analyses, for the steady-state current driven by finite reservoirs with proportional coupling to the system/junction. In doing so, we present a simplified and unified derivation of the non-interacting and many-body steady-state currents through arbitrary junctions, including outside of proportional coupling. We conjecture that the analytic solution for proportional coupling is the most general of its form for isomodal relaxation (i.e., relaxing proportional coupling will remove the ability to find compact, general analytical expressions for finite reservoirs). These results should be of broad utility in diagnosing the behavior and implementation of extended reservoir and related approaches, including the convergence to the Landauer limit (for non-interacting systems) and the Meir-Wingreen formula (for many-body systems).

Quantum transport with electronic relaxation in electrodes: Landauer-type formulas derived from the driven Liouville-von Neumann approach

We derive the exact steady-state solutions for the simplest model systems of resonant tunneling and tunneling with destructive quantum interference from the driven Liouville-von Neumann (DLvN) approach. Under the finite-state lead condition (the two electrodes have finite states), we analyze the asymptotic behavior of the steady-state current in the two limits of electronic relaxation. Under the infinite-state lead condition, the steady-state solutions of the two model systems can be cast as Landauer-type current formulas. According to the formulas, we show that the transmission functions near the resonant peak and the antiresonant dip can be significantly influenced by electronic relaxation in the electrodes. Moreover, under intermediate and strong electronic relaxation conditions, we analytically show that the steady-state current of the DLvN approach dramatically deviates from the Landauer current when destructive quantum interference occurs. In the regime of zero electronic relaxation, our results are reduced to the Landauer formula, indicating that the DLvN approach is equivalent to the Landauer approach when the leads have infinite states without any electronic relaxation.

Covalent Ag-C Bonding Contacts from Unprotected Terminal Acetylenes for Molecular Junctions

Robust molecule-metal linkages are essential for developing high-performance and air-stable devices for molecular and organic electronics. In this work, we report a facile method for forming robust and covalent bonding contacts between unprotected terminal acetylenes and metal (Ag) interfaces. Using this approach, we study the charge transport properties of conjugated oligophenylenes with covalent metal-carbon contacts to silver electrodes formed from unprotected terminal acetylene anchors. We performed single molecule charge transport experiments and molecular simulations on a series of arylacetylenes using gold and silver electrodes. Our results show that molecular junctions on silver electrodes spontaneously form silver-carbynyl carbon (Ag-C) contacts, resulting in a nearly 10-fold increase in conductance compared to the same molecules on gold electrodes. Overall, this work presents a simple, new electrode-anchor pair that reliably forms molecular junctions with stable and robust contacts for molecular electronics.

Anti-resonance features of destructive quantum interference in single-molecule thiophene junctions achieved by electrochemical gating

Controlling the electrical conductance and in particular the occurrence of quantum interference in single-molecule junctions through gating effects has potential for the realization of high-performance functional molecular devices. In this work we used an electrochemically gated, mechanically controllable break junction technique to tune the electronic behaviour of thiophene-based molecular junctions that show destructive quantum interference features. By varying the voltage applied to the electrochemical gate at room temperature, we reached a conductance minimum that provides direct evidence of charge transport controlled by an anti-resonance arising from destructive quantum interference. Our molecular system enables conductance tuning close to two orders of magnitude within the non-faradaic potential region, which is significantly higher than that achieved with molecules not showing destructive quantum interference. Our experimental results, interpreted using quantum transport theory, demonstrate that electrochemical gating is a promising strategy for obtaining improved in situ control over the electrical performance of interference-based molecular devices.

Current-constrained one-electron reduced density-matrix theory for non-equilibrium steady-state molecular conductivity

Photoinduced Anomalous Coulomb Blockade and the Role of Triplet States in Electron Transport through an Irradiated Molecular Transistor

In this study, we explore photoinduced electron transport through a molecule weakly coupled to two electrodes by combining first-principles quantum chemistry calculations with a Pauli master equation approach that accounts for many-electron states. In the incoherent limit, we demonstrate that energy-level alignment of triplet and charged states plays a crucial role, even when the rate of intersystem crossing is much smaller than the rate of fluorescence. Furthermore, the field intensity dependence and an upper bound to the photoinduced electric current can be analytically derived in our model. Under an optical field, the conductance spectra (charge stability diagrams) exhibit unusual Coulomb diamonds, which are associated with molecular excited states, and their widths can be expressed in terms of energies of the molecular electronic states. This study offers new directions for exploring optoelectronic response in nanoelectronics.

Quantum interference in multi-branched molecules: The exact transfer matrix solutions

We present a transfer matrix formalism for studying quantum interference in a single molecule electronic system with internal branched structures. Based on the Schrödinger equation with the Bethe ansatz and employing Kirchhoff's rule for quantum wires, we derive a general closed-form expression for the transmission and reflection amplitudes of a two-port quantum network. We show that the transport through a molecule with complex internal structures can be reduced to that of a single two-port scattering unit, which contains all the information of the original composite molecule. Our method allows for the calculation of the transmission coefficient for various types of individual molecular modules giving rise to different resonant transport behaviors such as the Breit-Wigner, Fano, and Mach-Zehnder resonances. As an illustration, we first re-derive the transmittance of the Aharonov-Bohm ring, and then we apply our formulation to N identical parity-time (PT)-symmetric potentials, connected in series as well as in parallel. It is shown that the spectral singularities and PT-symmetric transitions of single scattering cells may be observed in coupled systems. Such transitions may occur at the same or distinct values of the critical parameters, depending on the connection modes under which the scattering objects are coupled.

Synthesis of Phenylene Vinylene Macrocycles through Acyclic Diene Metathesis Macrocyclization and Their Aggregation Behavior

A series of phenylene vinylene macrocycles (PVMs) bearing substituents with various sizes and electronic properties have been synthesized through a one-step acyclic diene metathesis macrocyclization approach and their aggregation behaviors have been investigated. In great contrast to the aggregation of the analogous phenylene ethynylene macrocycles, which aggregate only when substituted with electron-withdrawing groups, these PVMs undergo exceptionally strong aggregation, regardless of the electron-donating or -withdrawing characters of the substituents. The unusual aggregation behavior of the PVMs is further investigated with thermodynamic and computer modeling studies, which show a good agreement with the recently proposed direct through-space interaction model, rather than the polar/π model. The high aggregation tendency of PVMs suggests the great potential of this novel class of shape-persistent macrocycles in a variety of applications, such as ion channels, host-guest recognition, and catalysis.

Molecular series-tunneling junctions

Charge transport through junctions consisting of insulating molecular units is a quantum phenomenon that cannot be described adequately by classical circuit laws. This paper explores tunneling current densities in self-assembled monolayer (SAM)-based junctions with the structure Ag(TS)/O2C-R1-R2-H//Ga2O3/EGaIn, where Ag(TS) is template-stripped silver and EGaIn is the eutectic alloy of gallium and indium; R1 and R2 refer to two classes of insulating molecular units-(CH2)n and (C6H4)m-that are connected in series and have different tunneling decay constants in the Simmons equation. These junctions can be analyzed as a form of series-tunneling junctions based on the observation that permuting the order of R1 and R2 in the junction does not alter the overall rate of charge transport. By using the Ag/O2C interface, this system decouples the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO, which is localized on the carboxylate group) from strong interactions with the R1 and R2 units. The differences in rates of tunneling are thus determined by the electronic structure of the groups R1 and R2; these differences are not influenced by the order of R1 and R2 in the SAM. In an electrical potential model that rationalizes this observation, R1 and R2 contribute independently to the height of the barrier. This model explicitly assumes that contributions to rates of tunneling from the Ag(TS)/O2C and H//Ga2O3 interfaces are constant across the series examined. The current density of these series-tunneling junctions can be described by J(V) = J0(V) exp(-β1d1 - β2d2), where J(V) is the current density (A/cm(2)) at applied voltage V and βi and di are the parameters describing the attenuation of the tunneling current through a rectangular tunneling barrier, with width d and a height related to the attenuation factor β.

Gate Control of the Conduction Mechanism Transition from Tunneling to Thermally Activated Hopping

We explore gate control of electron transport through molecules with different repeat units. In the framework of reduced density matrix theory, the computational results show (i) exponential decay in the tunneling regime and (ii) Arrhenius behavior and similar activation energies in the hopping regime, which are qualitatively consistent with experimental observations. Moreover, the gate enables tuning of the activation energy, indicating that the continuous transition from tunneling to hopping could be experimentally observed. The activation energy-gate voltage characteristics are introduced to investigate different conduction regimes.

Single-molecule electric revolving door

This work proposes a new type of molecular machine, the single-molecule electric revolving door, which utilizes conductance dependence upon molecular conformation as well as destructive quantum interference. We perform electron transport simulations in the zero-bias limit using the Landauer formalism together with density functional theory. The simulations show that the open- and closed-door states, accompanied by significant conductance variation, can be operated by an external electric field. The large on-off conductance ratio (~10(5)) implies that the molecular machine can also serve as an effective switching device. The simultaneous control and detection of the door states can function at the nanosecond scale, thereby offering a new capability for molecular-scale devices.
