Strong-field many-body physics and the giant enhancement in the high-harmonic spectrum of xenon

Benchmarking Functionals for Strong-Field Light-Matter Interactions in Adiabatic Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory

In recent years, time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) has been extensively employed for highly nonlinear optics in molecules and solids, including high harmonic generation (HHG), photoemission, and more. TDDFT exhibits a relatively low numerical cost while still describing both light-matter and electron-electron interactions ab initio, making it highly appealing. However, the majority of implementations of the theory utilize the simplest possible approximations for the exchange-correlation (XC) functional-either the local density or generalized gradient approximations, which are traditionally considered to have rather poor chemical accuracy. We present the first systematic study of the XC functional effect on molecular HHG, testing various levels of theory. Our numerical results suggest justification for using simpler approximations for the XC functional, showing that hybrid and meta functionals (as well as Hartree-Fock) can, at times, lead to poor and unphysical results. The specific source of the failure in more elaborate functionals should be topic of future work, but we hypothesize that its origin might be connected to the adiabatic approximation of TDDFT.

High-Harmonic Generation Spectroscopy of Gas-Phase Bromoform

High-Harmonic Generation (HHG) spectra of randomly aligned bromoform (CHBr3) molecules have been experimentally measured and theoretically simulated at various laser pulse intensities. From the experiments, we obtained a significant number of harmonics that goes beyond the cutoff limit predicted by the three-step model (3SM) with ionization from HOMO. To interpret the experiment, we resorted to real-time time-dependent configuration interaction with single excitations. We found that electronic bound states provide an appreciable contribution to the harmonics. More in detail, we analyzed the electron dynamics by decomposing the HHG signal in terms of single molecular-orbital contributions, to explain the appearance of harmonics around 20-30 eV beyond the expected cutoff due to HOMO. HHG spectra can be therefore explained by considering the contribution at high energy of HOMO-6 and HOMO-9, thus indicating a complex multiple-orbital strong-field dynamics. However, even though the presence of the bromoform cation should be not enough to produce such a signal, we could not exclude a priori that the origin of harmonics in the H29-H45 to be due to the cation, which has more energetic ionization channels.

Quantitative performance analysis and comparison of optimal-continuum Gaussian basis sets for high-harmonic generation spectra

Quantum-chemistry methods in the time domain with Gaussian basis sets are increasingly used to compute high-harmonic generation (HHG) spectra of atomic and molecular systems. The quality of these approaches is limited by the accuracy of Gaussian basis sets to describe continuum energy states. In the literature, optimal-continuum Gaussian basis sets have been proposed: Kaufmann et al. [J. Phys. B: At., Mol. Opt. Phys. 22, 2223 (1989)], Woźniak et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 154, 094111 (2021)], Nestmann and Peyerimhoff [J. Phys. B: At., Mol. Opt. Phys. 23, L773 (1990)], Faure et al. [Comput. Phys. Commun. 144, 224 (2002)], and Krause et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 140, 174113 (2014)]. In this work, we have compared the performances of these basis sets to simulate HHG spectra of H atom at different laser intensities. We have also investigated different strategies to balance basis sets with these continuum functions, together with the role of angular momentum. To quantify the performance of the different basis sets, we introduce local and global HHG descriptors. Comparisons with the grid and exact calculations are also provided.

Role of Inner Molecular Orbitals in High-Harmonic Generation Spectra of Aligned Uracil

In this work, we decompose the high-harmonic generation (HHG) signal of aligned gas-phase uracil into single molecular-orbital (MO) contributions. We compute HHG spectra for a pulse linearly polarized perpendicular to the molecular plane, with an intensity of 0.6 and 0.85 × 1014 W/cm2 and a wavelength of 800 nm. We use the real-time time-dependent Configuration Interaction with singles method, coupled to a Gaussian-based representation of the time-dependent wavefunction. The strong-field dynamics is affected by the energy of the ionization/recombination channels and by the coupling between the orbital symmetry and laser polarization. In the configuration studied here, we expect that π-type MOs favorably couple with the incoming pulse and play a substantial role in generating the HHG spectrum. Indeed, we show that HOMO, HOMO - 1, and HOMO - 4, which all are π-like, determine the intensity of harmonic peaks at different energies, while HOMO - 2 and HOMO - 3 provide a smaller contribution. It is worth mentioning that HOMO - 4 produces a stronger signal than that from HOMO - 1, even though the corresponding ionization energy, in an one-electron picture, is around 2.5 eV larger and more than 4 eV larger than the HOMO one.

Effects of electronic correlation on the high harmonic generation in helium: a time-dependent configuration interaction singles vs time-dependent full configuration interaction study

In this paper, we investigate the effects of full electronic correlation on the high harmonic generation in the helium atom subjected to laser pulses of extremely high intensity. To do this, we perform real-time propagations of the helium atom wavefunction using quantum chemistry methods coupled to Gaussian basis sets. The calculations are done within the real-time time-dependent configuration interaction framework, at two levels of theory: time-dependent configuration interation with single excitations (TD-CIS, uncorrelated method) and time-dependent full configuration interaction (TD-FCI, fully correlated method). The electronic wavefunction is expanded in Dunning basis sets supplemented with functions adapted to describing highly excited and continuum states. We also compare the TD-CI results with grid-based propagations of the helium atom within the single-active-electron approximation. Our results show that when including the dynamical electron correlation, a noticeable improvement to the description of HHG can be achieved, in terms of e.g. a more constant intensity in the lower energy part of the harmonic plateau. However, such effects can be captured only if the basis set used suffices to reproduce the most basic features, such as the HHG cutoff position, at the uncorrelated level of theory.

Resonance absorption of the inner shell during high-order harmonic generation

In this work, we report the observation of resonance absorption of the inner shell during the high-order harmonic generation (HHG) from xenon (Xe) and krypton (Kr). The absorption peaks show a periodic variation with the change of carrier-envelope phase of driving laser pulses and the delay of two-color laser field, which indicates the absorption peaks come from the collective multielectron effects during the HHG. With the increase of gas pressure, the depth of absorption peak will continue to increase, while due to the phase matching effect, there will be an optimal pressure for the intensity of harmonic signal. Our experimental results pave the way to uncover the physical mechanism of the collective multielectron effects involving inner-shell electrons in the HHG process.

Time-dependentab initioapproaches for high-harmonic generation spectroscopy

High-harmonic generation (HHG) is a nonlinear physical process used for the production of ultrashort pulses in XUV region, which are then used for investigating ultrafast phenomena in time-resolved spectroscopies. Moreover, HHG signal itself encodes information on electronic structure and dynamics of the target, possibly coupled to the nuclear degrees of freedom. Investigating HHG signal leads to HHG spectroscopy, which is applied to atoms, molecules, solids and recently also to liquids. Analysing the number of generated harmonics, their intensity and shape gives a detailed insight of, e.g., ionisation and recombination channels occurring in the strong-field dynamics. A number of valuable theoretical models has been developed over the years to explain and interpret HHG features, with the three-step model being the most known one. Originally, these models neglect the complexity of the propagating electronic wavefunction, by only using an approximated formulation of ground and continuum states. Many effects unravelled by HHG spectroscopy are instead due to electron correlation effects, quantum interference, and Rydberg-state contributions, which are all properly captured by anab initioelectronic-structure approach. In this review we have collected recent advances in modelling HHG by means ofab initiotime-dependent approaches relying on the propagation of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation (or derived equations) in presence of a very intense electromagnetic field. We limit ourselves to gas-phase atomic and molecular targets, and to solids. We focus on the various levels of theory employed for describing the electronic structure of the target, coupled with strong-field dynamics and ionisation approaches, and on the basis used to represent electronic states. Selected applications and perspectives for future developments are also given.

HHG probing of atomic dipoles by electronic wave-packet caustics

We exploit high-order harmonic generation spectroscopy at the caustics of the recombining electron wave-packet as a method for directly comparing experimental spectra with ab-initio theories. Experimental results in xenon and comparison with ab-initio time-dependent configuration-interaction singles calculations allowed to assess the role of the wave-packet enhancement during the giant resonance. Results in argon show that this technique can also be applied to other targets.

Harmonic Generation from Neutral Manganese Atoms in the Vicinity of the Giant Autoionization Resonance

High harmonics from laser-ablated plumes are mostly generated from ionic species. We demonstrate that with ultrashort infrared (∼1.82  μm) driving lasers, high harmonics from laser-ablated manganese are predominantly generated from neutral atoms, a transition metal atom with an ionization potential of 7.4 eV. Our results open the possibility to advance laser-ablation technique to study the dynamics of neutral atoms of low ionization potential. Moreover, as manganese contains giant autoionizing resonance, intense and broadband high harmonics have been demonstrated from this resonance at energies from 49 to 53 eV. This opens the possibility to generate intense attosecond pulses directly from the giant resonances, as well as to study these resonances using high-harmonic spectroscopy.

Multi-channel dynamics in high harmonic generation of aligned CO2: ab initio analysis with time-dependent B-spline algebraic diagrammatic construction

Electron-correlation effects on the multi-channel dynamics underlying strong-field HHG response of CO₂ molecule were demonstrated by ab initio ADC study.

High-Harmonic Generation Enhanced by Dynamical Electron Correlation

We theoretically study multielectron effects in high-harmonic generation (HHG), using all-electron first-principles simulations for a one-dimensional model atom. In addition to the usual plateau and cutoff (from a cation in the present case, since the neutral is immediately ionized), we find a prominent resonance peak far above the plateau and a second plateau extended beyond the first cutoff. These features originate from the dication response enhanced by orders of magnitude due to the action of the Coulomb force from the rescattering electron, and, hence, are a clear manifestation of electron correlation. Although the present simulations are done in 1D, the physical mechanism underlying the dramatic enhancement is expected to hold also for three-dimensional real systems. This will provide new possibilities to explore dynamical electron correlation in intense laser fields using HHG, which is usually considered to be of single-electron nature in most cases.

Probe of Multielectron Dynamics in Xenon by Caustics in High-Order Harmonic Generation

We investigated the giant resonance in xenon by high-order harmonic generation spectroscopy driven by a two-color field. The addition of a nonperturbative second harmonic component parallel to the driving field breaks the symmetry between neighboring subcycles resulting in the appearance of spectral caustics at two distinct cutoff energies. By controlling the phase delay between the two color components it is possible to tailor the harmonic emission in order to amplify and isolate the spectral feature of interest. In this Letter we demonstrate how this control scheme can be used to investigate the role of electron correlations that give birth to the giant resonance in xenon. The collective excitations of the giant dipole resonance in xenon combined with the spectral manipulation associated with the two-color driving field allow us to see features that are normally not accessible and to obtain a good agreement between the experimental results and the theoretical predictions.

Rewriting the rules governing high intensity interactions of light with matter

The trajectory of discovery associated with the study of high-intensity nonlinear radiative interactions with matter and corresponding nonlinear modes of electromagnetic propagation through material that have been conducted over the last 50 years can be presented as a landscape in the intensity/quantum energy [I-ħω] plane. Based on an extensive series of experimental and theoretical findings, a universal zone of anomalous enhanced electromagnetic coupling, designated as the fundamental nonlinear domain, can be defined. Since the lower boundaries of this region for all atomic matter correspond to ħω ~ 10(3) eV and I  ≈  10(16) W cm(-2), it heralds a future dominated by x-ray and γ-ray studies of all phases of matter including nuclear states. The augmented strength of the interaction with materials can be generally expressed as an increase in the basic electromagnetic coupling constant in which the fine structure constant α  →  Z(2)α, where Z denotes the number of electrons participating in an ordered response to the driving field. Since radiative conditions strongly favoring the development of this enhanced electromagnetic coupling are readily produced in self-trapped plasma channels, the processes associated with the generation of nonlinear interactions with materials stand in natural alliance with the nonlinear mechanisms that induce confined propagation. An experimental example involving the Xe (4d(10)5s(2)5p(6)) supershell for which Z  ≅  18 that falls in the specified anomalous nonlinear domain is described. This yields an effective coupling constant of Z(2)α  ≅  2.4  >  1, a magnitude comparable to the strong interaction and a value rendering as useless conventional perturbative analyses founded on an expansion in powers of α. This enhancement can be quantitatively understood as a direct consequence of the dominant role played by coherently driven multiply-excited states in the dynamics of the coupling. It is also conclusively demonstrated by an abundance of data that the utterly peerless champion of the experimental campaign leading to the definition of the fundamental nonlinear domain was excimer laser technology. The basis of this unique role was the ability to satisfy simultaneously a triplet (ω, I, P) of conditions stating the minimal values of the frequency ω, intensity I, and the power P necessary to enable the key physical processes to be experimentally observed and controllably combined. The historical confluence of these developments creates a solid foundation for the prediction of future advances in the fundamental understanding of ultra-high power density states of matter. The atomic findings graciously generalize to the composition of a nuclear stanza expressing the accessibility of the nuclear domain. With this basis serving as the launch platform, a cadenza of three grand challenge problems representing both new materials and new interactions is presented for future solution; they are (1) the performance of an experimental probe of the properties of the vacuum state associated with the dark energy at an intensity approaching the Schwinger/Heisenberg limit, (2) the attainment of amplification in the γ-ray region (~1 MeV) and the discovery of a nuclear excimer, and (3) the determination of a path to the projected super-heavy nuclear island of stability.

Sensitivity of nonlinear photoionization to resonance substructure in collective excitation

Collective behaviour is a characteristic feature in many-body systems, important for developments in fields such as magnetism, superconductivity, photonics and electronics. Recently, there has been increasing interest in the optically nonlinear response of collective excitations. Here we demonstrate how the nonlinear interaction of a many-body system with intense XUV radiation can be used as an effective probe for characterizing otherwise unresolved features of its collective response. Resonant photoionization of atomic xenon was chosen as a case study. The excellent agreement between experiment and theory strongly supports the prediction that two distinct poles underlie the giant dipole resonance. Our results pave the way towards a deeper understanding of collective behaviour in atoms, molecules and solid-state systems using nonlinear spectroscopic techniques enabled by modern short-wavelength light sources.

Electrons in atoms exhibit many-body collective behaviours that can be studied by highbrightness X-rays from FELs. Here, the authors examine two-photon above threshold ionization of xenon and find that nonlinearities in the response uncover that more than one state underpins the 4d giant resonance.

The sensitivities of high-harmonic generation and strong-field ionization to coupled electronic and nuclear dynamics

The sensitivities of high-harmonic generation (HHG) and strong-field ionization (SFI) to coupled electronic and nuclear dynamics are studied, using the nitric oxide (NO) molecule as an example. A coherent superposition of electronic and rotational states of NO is prepared by impulsive stimulated Raman scattering and probed by simultaneous detection of HHG and SFI yields. We observe a fourfold higher sensitivity of high-harmonic generation to electronic dynamics and attribute it to the presence of inelastic quantum paths connecting coherently related electronic states [Kraus et al., Phys. Rev. Lett.111, 243005 (2013)]. Whereas different harmonic orders display very different sensitivities to rotational or electronic dynamics, strong-field ionization is found to be most sensitive to electronic motion. We introduce a general theoretical formalism for high-harmonic generation from coupled nuclear-electronic wave packets. We show that the unequal sensitivities of different harmonic orders to electronic or rotational dynamics result from the angle dependence of the photorecombination matrix elements which encode several autoionizing and shape resonances in the photoionization continuum of NO. We further study the dependence of rotational and electronic coherences on the intensity of the excitation pulse and support the observations with calculations.
