Signatures of fractional exclusion statistics in the spectroscopy of quantum Hall droplets

Emergence of Anyons on the Two-Sphere in Molecular Impurities

Recently it was shown that anyons on the two-sphere naturally arise from a system of molecular impurities exchanging angular momentum with a many-particle bath (Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 015301 (2021)). Here we further advance this approach and rigorously demonstrate that in the experimentally realized regime the lowest spectrum of two linear molecules immersed in superfluid helium corresponds to the spectrum of two anyons on the sphere. We develop the formalism within the framework of the recently experimentally observed angulon quasiparticle.

Molecular Impurities as a Realization of Anyons on the Two-Sphere

Studies on the experimental realization of two-dimensional anyons in terms of quasiparticles have been restricted, so far, to only anyons on the plane. It is known, however, that the geometry and topology of space can have significant effects on quantum statistics for particles moving on it. Here, we have undertaken the first step toward realizing the emerging fractional statistics for particles restricted to move on the sphere instead of on the plane. We show that such a model arises naturally in the context of quantum impurity problems. In particular, we demonstrate a setup in which the lowest-energy spectrum of two linear bosonic or fermionic molecules immersed in a quantum many-particle environment can coincide with the anyonic spectrum on the sphere. This paves the way toward the experimental realization of anyons on the sphere using molecular impurities. Furthermore, since a change in the alignment of the molecules corresponds to the exchange of the particles on the sphere, such a realization reveals a novel type of exclusion principle for molecular impurities, which could also be of use as a powerful technique to measure the statistics parameter. Finally, our approach opens up a simple numerical route to investigate the spectra of many anyons on the sphere. Accordingly, we present the spectrum of two anyons on the sphere in the presence of a Dirac monopole field.

Fractional Angular Momentum and Anyon Statistics of Impurities in Laughlin Liquids

The elementary excitations of a fractional quantum Hall liquid are quasiparticles or quasiholes that are neither bosons nor fermions, but are so-called anyons. Here we study impurity particles immersed in a quantum Hall liquid that bind to the quasiholes via repulsive interactions with the liquid. We show that the angular momentum of an impurity is given by the multiple of a fractional "quantum" of angular momentum, and can directly be observed from the impurity density. In a system with several impurities bound to quasiholes, their total angular momentum interpolates between the values for free fermions and for free bosons. This interpolation is characterized by the fractional statistical parameter of the anyons, which is typically defined via their braiding behavior.

Topological bands for ultracold atoms

There have been significant recent advances in realizing band structures with geometrical and topological features in experiments on cold atomic gases. This review summarizes these developments, beginning with a summary of the key concepts of geometry and topology for Bloch bands. Descriptions are given of the different methods that have been used to generate these novel band structures for cold atoms and of the physical observables that have allowed their characterization. The focus is on the physical principles that underlie the different experimental approaches, providing a conceptual framework within which to view these developments. Also described is how specific experimental implementations can influence physical properties. Moving beyond single-particle effects, descriptions are given of the forms of interparticle interactions that emerge when atoms are subjected to these energy bands and of some of the many-body phases that may be sought in future experiments.

Time-of-Flight Measurements as a Possible Method to Observe Anyonic Statistics

We propose a standard time-of-flight experiment as a method for observing the anyonic statistics of quasiholes in a fractional quantum Hall state of ultracold atoms. The quasihole states can be stably prepared by pinning the quasiholes with localized potentials and a measurement of the mean square radius of the freely expanding cloud, which is related to the average total angular momentum of the initial state, offers direct signatures of the statistical phase. Our proposed method is validated by Monte Carlo calculations for ν=1/2 and 1/3 fractional quantum Hall liquids containing a realistic number of particles. Extensions to quantum Hall liquids of light and to non-Abelian anyons are briefly discussed.

Emergence of Fractional Statistics for Tracer Particles in a Laughlin Liquid

We consider a thought experiment where two distinct species of 2D particles in a perpendicular magnetic field interact via repulsive potentials. If the magnetic field and the interactions are strong enough, one type of particles forms a Laughlin state and the other type couples to Laughlin quasiholes. We show that, in this situation, the motion of the second type of particles is described by an effective Hamiltonian, corresponding to the magnetic gauge picture for noninteracting anyons. The argument is in accord with, but distinct from, the Berry phase calculation of Arovas, Schrieffer, and Wilczek. It suggests possibilities to observe the influence of effective anyon statistics in fractional quantum Hall systems.
