Experimental verification of overlimiting current by surface conduction and electro-osmotic flow in microchannels

Differential Impact of Surface Conduction and Electroosmotic Flow on Ion Transport Enhancement by Microscale Auxiliary Structures

Our research investigates the impact of auxiliary structures on ion transport in electrochemical systems such as batteries and microscale desalination units, whose importance for sustainable development has increased dramatically in recent decades. The electrochemical systems typically feature ion-selective surfaces, such as electrodes and ion exchange membranes, where ion depletion can cause performance issues including metal dendrite formation and flow instability. Recent research has shown that auxiliary structures in these electrochemical systems can enhance ion transfer near ion-selective surfaces, thereby resolving the instability problem and improving the energy conversion efficiency of the system. Our study leverages recent advancements in nanoscale electrokinetics to model these auxiliary structures as pillar arrays near an ion exchange membrane in a microchannel. We examine how these structures enhance ion transports relative to the characteristic length scale of microchannel depth and pillars' proximity to the ion-selective surface. Results show that the effect of the pillars varies significantly with their placement. Specifically, in deeper microchannels, where electrokinetic convection is stronger, the closer the auxiliary structure is to the ion-selective membrane, the better the ion transfer. However, in the thinner microchannel, the proximity of the auxiliary structure to the ion selective membrane has a less significant correlation with the ion transfer. Therefore, this finding highlights the importance of spatial arrangement of the auxiliary structures in improving the performance of electrochemical devices. Conclusively, this study can help to better understand energy conversion systems such as fuel cells, salinity gradient power generation systems, and electrochemical desalination systems, where auxiliary structures can be used in the vicinity of ion-selective surfaces. Especially, our fundamental electrokinetic study provides an effective means for designing the efficient electrochemical platforms utilizing micro/nanofluidics.

Electro-osmotic flow in nanoconfinement: Solid-state and protein nanopores

Electro-osmotic flow (EOF) is a phenomenon where fluid motion occurs in porous materials or micro/nano-channels when an external electric field is applied. In the particular example of single-molecule electrophoresis using single nanopores, the role of EOF on the translocation velocity of the analyte molecule through the nanopore is not fully understood. The complexity arises from a combination of effects from hydrodynamics in restricted environments, electrostatics emanating from charge decorations and geometry of the pores. We address this fundamental issue using the Poisson-Nernst-Planck and Navier-Stokes (PNP-NS) equations for cylindrical solid-state nanopores and three representative protein nanopores (α-hemolysin, MspA, and CsgG). We present the velocity profiles inside the nanopores as a function of charge decoration and geometry of the pore and applied electric field. We report several unexpected results: (a) The apparent charges of the protein nanopores are different from their net charge and the surface charge of the whole protein geometry, and the net charge of inner surface is consistent with the apparent charge. (b) The fluid velocity depends non-monotonically on voltage. The three protein nanopores exhibit unique EOF and velocity-voltage relations, which cannot be simply deduced from their net charge. Furthermore, effective point mutations can significantly change both the direction and the magnitude of EOF. The present computational analysis offers an opportunity to further understand the origins of the speed of transport of charged macromolecules in restricted space and to design desirable nanopores for tuning the speed of macromolecules through nanopores.

Surface Patterning of Metal Zinc Electrode with an In-Region Zincophilic Interface for High-Rate and Long-Cycle-Life Zinc Metal Anode

The undesirable dendrite growth induced by non-planar zinc (Zn) deposition and low Coulombic efficiency resulting from severe side reactions have been long-standing challenges for metallic Zn anodes and substantially impede the practical application of rechargeable aqueous Zn metal batteries (ZMBs). Herein, we present a strategy for achieving a high-rate and long-cycle-life Zn metal anode by patterning Zn foil surfaces and endowing a Zn-Indium (Zn-In) interface in the microchannels. The accumulation of electrons in the microchannel and the zincophilicity of the Zn-In interface promote preferential heteroepitaxial Zn deposition in the microchannel region and enhance the tolerance of the electrode at high current densities. Meanwhile, electron aggregation accelerates the dissolution of non-(002) plane Zn atoms on the array surface, thereby directing the subsequent homoepitaxial Zn deposition on the array surface. Consequently, the planar dendrite-free Zn deposition and long-term cycling stability are achieved (5,050 h at 10.0 mA cm-2 and 27,000 cycles at 20.0 mA cm-2). Furthermore, a Zn/I2 full cell assembled by pairing with such an anode can maintain good stability for 3,500 cycles at 5.0 C, demonstrating the application potential of the as-prepared ZnIn anode for high-performance aqueous ZMBs.

Electroconvective viscous fingering in a single polyelectrolyte fluid on a charge selective surface

When a low-viscosity fluid displaces into a higher-viscosity fluid, the liquid-liquid interface becomes unstable causing finger-like patterns. This viscous fingering instability has been widely observed in nature and engineering systems with two adjoined fluids. Here, we demonstrate a hitherto-unrealizable viscous fingering in a single fluid-solid interface. In a single polyelectrolyte fluid on a charge selective surface, selective ion rejection through the surface initiates i) stepwise ion concentration and viscosity gradient boundaries in the fluid and ii) electroconvective vortices on the surface. As the vortices grow, the viscosity gradient boundary pushes away from the surface, resulting viscous fingering. Comparable to conventional one with two fluids, i) a viscosity ratio ([Formula: see text]) governs the onset of this electroconvective viscous fingering, and ii) the boundary properties (finger velocity and rheological effects) - represented by [Formula: see text], electric Rayleigh ([Formula: see text]), Schmidt ([Formula: see text]), and Deborah ([Formula: see text]) numbers - determine finger shapes (straight v.s. ramified, the onset length of fingering, and relative finger width). With controllable onset and shape, the mechanism of electroconvective viscous fingering offers new possibilities for manipulating ion transport and dendritic instability in electrochemical systems.

Hierarchical Capillarity-Assisted Liquid Invasion in Multilayered Paper Channels for Nanoelectrokinetic Preconcentration

A nanoelectrokinetic phenomenon called ion concentration polarization (ICP) has been recently applied to microfluidic paper-based devices for the high fold preconcentration of low-abundant analytes. The inherent microstructural characteristics of cellulose papers can sufficiently stabilize the chaotic electroconvection of ICP, which is a significant annoyance for typical engineered microfluidic channels. However, a high electrical voltage to induce ICP in a paper-fluidic channel can increase unavoidable electrophoretic forces over drag forces so that the preconcentrated plug is rapidly receded with severe dispersion. In order to enhance the hydraulic drag force that helps the preconcentration of analytes, here we introduce a multilayered paper structure into paper-fluidic channel. We theoretically and experimentally demonstrate that a hierarchical capillary structure in a multilayered paper-fluidic channel can effectively increase the hydraulic drag force. For the practical utility in the field of diagnostics, the mechanism is verified by a simple example of the immunoassay using biotin-streptavidin complexation.

dCas9-Mediated PCR-Free Detection of Oncogenic Mutation by Nonequilibrium Nanoelectrokinetic Selective Preconcentration

Cutting-edge nanoelectrokinetic technology in this work provides a breakthrough for the present clinical demands of molecular diagnosis to detect a trace amount of oncogenic mutation of DNA in a short time without an erroneous PCR procedure. In this work, we combined the sequence-specific labeling scheme of CRISPR/dCas9 and ion concentration polarization (ICP) mechanism to separately preconcentrate target DNA molecules for rapid detection. Using the mobility shift caused by dCas9's specific binding to the mutant, the mutated DNA and normal DNA were distinguished in the microchip. Based on this technique, we successfully demonstrated the dCas9-mediated 1-min detection of single base substitution (SBS) in EGFR DNA, a carcinogenesis indicator. Moreover, the presence/absence of target DNA was identified at a glance like a commercial pregnancy test kit (two lines for positive and one line for negative) by the distinct preconcentration mechanisms of ICP, even at the 0.1% concentration of the target mutant.

Selective and Chemical-Free Removal of Toxic Heavy Metal Cations from Water Using Shock Ion Extraction

Electrochemical methods are known to have attractive features and capabilities when used for ion separations and water purification. In this study, we developed a new process called shock ion extraction (shock IX) for selective and chemical-free removal of toxic heavy metals from water. Shock IX is a hybrid process that combines shock electrodialysis (shock ED) and ion exchange using an ion exchange resin wafer (IERW), and this method can be thought of functionally as an electrochemically assisted variation of traditional ion exchange. In particular, shock IX exhibits greater ion removal and selectivity for longer periods of time, compared to the use of ion exchange alone. The use of an IERW in shock ED also increases multivalent ion selectivity, reduces energy consumption, and improves the hydrodynamics and scalability of the system.

Electrochemical Methods for Water Purification, Ion Separations, and Energy Conversion

Agricultural development, extensive industrialization, and rapid growth of the global population have inadvertently been accompanied by environmental pollution. Water pollution is exacerbated by the decreasing ability of traditional treatment methods to comply with tightening environmental standards. This review provides a comprehensive description of the principles and applications of electrochemical methods for water purification, ion separations, and energy conversion. Electrochemical methods have attractive features such as compact size, chemical selectivity, broad applicability, and reduced generation of secondary waste. Perhaps the greatest advantage of electrochemical methods, however, is that they remove contaminants directly from the water, while other technologies extract the water from the contaminants, which enables efficient removal of trace pollutants. The review begins with an overview of conventional electrochemical methods, which drive chemical or physical transformations via Faradaic reactions at electrodes, and proceeds to a detailed examination of the two primary mechanisms by which contaminants are separated in nondestructive electrochemical processes, namely electrokinetics and electrosorption. In these sections, special attention is given to emerging methods, such as shock electrodialysis and Faradaic electrosorption. Given the importance of generating clean, renewable energy, which may sometimes be combined with water purification, the review also discusses inverse methods of electrochemical energy conversion based on reverse electrosorption, electrowetting, and electrokinetic phenomena. The review concludes with a discussion of technology comparisons, remaining challenges, and potential innovations for the field such as process intensification and technoeconomic optimization.

Adhesive lift method for patterning arbitrary-shaped thin ion-selective films in micro/nanofluidic device

Micro/nanofluidic platforms with nanoporous films have been utilized as research tools for studying electrokinetic phenomena occurring not only in macro-scale systems such as electro-desalination but also in micro-scale systems such as bio-molecular preconcentrators. However, due to the limitations of fabrication techniques, studies with nanoporous films are mainly limited to vary the physicochemical properties of the films such as surface charge and pore size, despite the enormous effect of the membrane morphology on the phenomena that is to be expected. Therefore, we propose an economic and feasible nanofabrication method called the "adhesive lift method" for patterning thin arbitrarily-shaped nanoporous film to integrate it into micro/nanofluidic platforms. The conformal patterning of the nanoporous films (Nafion or poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) in this work) was accomplished with spin coating, oxygen plasma treatment and the "adhesive lift technique". Using the fabricated platforms, the initiation of ion concentration polarization along the film with various shapes was demonstrated. In particular, various electrokinetic characteristics of overlimiting conductance depending on the length scale of the microchannels were successfully demonstrated. Therefore, the presented adhesive lift method would provide platforms which can nearly mimic practical macro-scale fluidic systems so that the method would be very useful for studying various electrokinetic phenomena inside it.

In operando visualization of redox flow battery in membrane-free microfluidic platform

The current study investigates fundamentals of electrochemical reactions using the membrane-free redox flow battery (RFB) platform with a laminar strategy and colorimetry of multiredox organic molecules. Taking advantage of unique color changes of electrolytes depending on the state of charge, we analyze the electrochemical kinetics of the RFB system in terms of charge and mass transfer. It is verified that a balanced rate of charge and mass transfer significantly affects the battery performance. Furthermore, a classical physicochemical hydrodynamic equation is adopted for scaling analysis of the depletion region deteriorating battery performance. We successfully integrate analytical, numerical, and experimental data for elucidating the depletion region. Based on these fundamental studies, finally, a favorable design is suggested for performance enhancement.

Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are attractive large-scale energy storage techniques, achieving remarkable progress in performance enhancement for the last decades. Nevertheless, an in-depth understanding of the reaction mechanism still remains challenging due to its unique operation mechanism, where electrochemistry and hydrodynamics simultaneously govern battery performance. Thus, to elucidate the precise reactions occurring in RFB systems, an appropriate analysis technique that enables the real-time observation of electrokinetic phenomena is indispensable. Herein, we report in operando visualization and analytical study of RFBs by employing a membrane-free microfluidic platform, that is, a membrane-free microfluidic RFB. Using this platform, the electrokinetic investigations were carried out for the 5,10-bis(2-methoxyethyl)-5,10-dihydrophenazine (BMEPZ) catholyte, which has been recently proposed as a high-performance multiredox organic molecule. Taking advantage of the inherent colorimetric property of BMEPZ, we unravel the intrinsic electrochemical properties in terms of charge and mass transfer kinetics during the multiredox reaction through in operando visualization, which enables theoretical study of physicochemical hydrodynamics in electrochemical systems. Based on insights on the electrokinetic limitations in RFBs, we verify the validity of electrode geometry design that can suppress the range of the depletion region, leading to enhanced cell performance.

Lab-on-Chip Microsystems for Ex Vivo Network of Neurons Studies: A Review

Increasing population is suffering from neurological disorders nowadays, with no effective therapy available to treat them. Explicit knowledge of network of neurons (NoN) in the human brain is key to understanding the pathology of neurological diseases. Research in NoN developed slower than expected due to the complexity of the human brain and the ethical considerations for in vivo studies. However, advances in nanomaterials and micro-/nano-microfabrication have opened up the chances for a deeper understanding of NoN ex vivo, one step closer to in vivo studies. This review therefore summarizes the latest advances in lab-on-chip microsystems for ex vivo NoN studies by focusing on the advanced materials, techniques, and models for ex vivo NoN studies. The essential methods for constructing lab-on-chip models are microfluidics and microelectrode arrays. Through combination with functional biomaterials and biocompatible materials, the microfluidics and microelectrode arrays enable the development of various models for ex vivo NoN studies. This review also includes the state-of-the-art brain slide and organoid-on-chip models. The end of this review discusses the previous issues and future perspectives for NoN studies.

Ion transport in electrolytes of dielectric nanodevices

Ion transport in electrolytes with nanoscale confinements is of great importance in many fields such as nanofluidics and electrochemical energy devices. The mobility and conductance for ions are often described by the classical Debye-Hückel-Onsager (DHO) theory but this theory fails for ions near dielectric interfaces. We propose a generalized DHO theory by using the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin techniques for the solution of the Onsager-Fuoss equation with variable coefficients. The theory allows to quantitatively measure physical quantities of ion transport in nanodevices and is demonstrated to well explain the abnormal increase or decrease of the ionic mobility tuned via the dielectric mismatch. By numerical calculations, our theory unravels the crucial role of the size of confinements and the ionic concentration on the ion transport, and demonstrates that the dielectric polarization can provide a giant enhancement on the conductance of electrolytes in nanodevices. This mechanism provides a practical guide for related nanoscale technologies with controllable transport properties.

Overlimiting current near a nanochannel a new insight using molecular dynamics simulations

In this paper, we report for the first time overlimiting current near a nanochannel using all-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Here, the simulated system consists of a silicon nitride nanochannel integrated with two reservoirs. The reservoirs are filled with [Formula: see text] potassium chloride (KCl) solution. A total of [Formula: see text] million atoms are simulated with a total simulation time of [Formula: see text] over [Formula: see text] 30000 CPU hours using 128 core processors (Intel(R) E5-2670 2.6 GHz Processor). The origin of overlimiting current is found to be due to an increase in chloride ([Formula: see text]) ion concentration inside the nanochannel leading to an increase in ionic conductivity. Such effects are seen due to charge redistribution and focusing of the electric field near the interface of the nanochannel and source reservoir. Also, from the MD simulations, we observe that the earlier theoretical and experimental postulations of strong convective vortices resulting in overlimiting current are not the true origin for overlimiting current. Our study may open up new theories for the mechanism of overlimiting current near the nanochannel interconnect devices.

Overlimiting Current in Nonuniform Arrays of Microchannels: Recirculating Flow and Anticrystallization

Overlimiting current (OLC) through electrolytes interfaced with perm-selective membranes has been extensively researched for understanding fundamental nano-electrokinetics and developing efficient engineering applications. This work studies how a network of microchannels in a nonuniform array, which mimics a natural pore configuration, can contribute to OLC. Here, micro/nanofluidic devices are fabricated with arrays of parallel microchannels with nonuniform size distributions, which are faced with a perm-selective membrane. All cases maintain the same surface and bulk conduction to allow probing of the sensitivity only by the nonuniformity. Rigorous experimental and theoretical investigation demonstrates that overlimiting conductance has a maximum value depending on the nonuniformity. Furthermore, in operando visualization reveals that the nonuniform arrays induce flow loops across the microchannel network enhancing advective transport. This recirculating flow eliminates local salt accumulations so that it can effectively suppress undesirable salt crystallization. Therefore, these results can significantly advance not only the fundamental understanding of the driving mechanism of the OLC but also the design rule of electrochemical membrane applications.

Pulsed electric field-assisted overlimiting current enhancement through a perm-selective membrane

Overlimiting current through a perm-selective membrane has been actively researched not only for the fundamental advancement of electrokinetics but also for energy/environmental applications such as electrodialysis, fuel cells, etc. In particular, various strategies were reported for the enhancement of overlimiting current because these applications demand efficient mass transport through the membrane. In this work, we presented in operando visualization and rigorous numerical study for the overlimiting current density enhancement using a pulsed electric field which is one of the most cost-effective parameters to be externally controlled. We clearly demonstrated that the current density had a peak value as a function of the pulse frequency and would suggest its correlation to a concentration profile and diffusion relaxation time ([small tau, Greek, tilde]diff). As the pulse frequency was chosen which is similar to ([small tau, Greek, tilde]diff)-1, the concentration profiles (i.e. established current paths) were maintained even in off-state due to remnant current paths helping the fast ion transportation. The fundamental evidence presented in this work would provide a strategical design of a perm-selective membrane system for a higher mass transportation efficiency.

Electrokinetic-Driven Fast Ion Delivery for Reversible Aqueous Zinc Metal Batteries with High Capacity

Aqueous zinc (Zn) metal batteries (ZMBs) are considered a promising candidate for grid-scale energy storage due to their freedom from fire hazards. However, a limited reversibility of Zn metal electrode caused by dendritic Zn growth has hindered the advent of high-capacity Zn metal batteries (>4 mAh cm^-2 ). Herein, it is reported that fast electrokinetic Zn-ion transport extremely improves the Zn metal reversibility. It is revealed that a negatively charged porous layer (NPL) provides the electrokinetic Zn-ion transport by surface conduction, and consequently impedes the depletion of Zn-ion on electrode surface as indicated by numerical simulations and overlimiting current behavior. Due to the quick Zn-ion delivery, a dendrite-free and densely packed Zn metal deposit is accommodated inside its pores. With the introduction of the NPL, the cycling stability of Zn symmetric cell is enhanced by 21 times at 10 mA cm^-2 /10 mAh cm^-2 . Average Coulombic efficiency of 99.6% is achieved over 500 cycles for electrodeposition/stripping at 30 mA cm^-2 /5 mAh cm^-2 on NPL-Cu electrode. Furthermore, a high-capacity Zn/V₂ O₅ full cell with the NPL exhibits an extraordinary stability over 1000 cycles at a capacity of 4.8 mAh cm^-2 .

Frontiers of Membrane Desalination Processes for Brackish Water Treatment: A Review

Climate change, population growth, and increased industrial activities are exacerbating freshwater scarcity and leading to increased interest in desalination of saline water. Brackish water is an attractive alternative to freshwater due to its low salinity and widespread availability in many water-scarce areas. However, partial or total desalination of brackish water is essential to reach the water quality requirements for a variety of applications. Selection of appropriate technology requires knowledge and understanding of the operational principles, capabilities, and limitations of the available desalination processes. Proper combination of feedwater technology improves the energy efficiency of desalination. In this article, we focus on pressure-driven and electro-driven membrane desalination processes. We review the principles, as well as challenges and recent improvements for reverse osmosis (RO), nanofiltration (NF), electrodialysis (ED), and membrane capacitive deionization (MCDI). RO is the dominant membrane process for large-scale desalination of brackish water with higher salinity, while ED and MCDI are energy-efficient for lower salinity ranges. Selective removal of multivalent components makes NF an excellent option for water softening. Brackish water desalination with membrane processes faces a series of challenges. Membrane fouling and scaling are the common issues associated with these processes, resulting in a reduction in their water recovery and energy efficiency. To overcome such adverse effects, many efforts have been dedicated toward development of pre-treatment steps, surface modification of membranes, use of anti-scalant, and modification of operational conditions. However, the effectiveness of these approaches depends on the fouling propensity of the feed water. In addition to the fouling and scaling, each process may face other challenges depending on their state of development and maturity. This review provides recent advances in the material, architecture, and operation of these processes that can assist in the selection and design of technologies for particular applications. The active research directions to improve the performance of these processes are also identified. The review shows that technologies that are tunable and particularly efficient for partial desalination such as ED and MCDI are increasingly competitive with traditional RO processes. Development of cost-effective ion exchange membranes with high chemical and mechanical stability can further improve the economy of desalination with electro-membrane processes and advance their future applications.

Eco friendly nanofluidic platforms using biodegradable nanoporous materials

Splendid advancement of micro/nanofluidic researches in the field of bio- and chemical-analysis enables various ubiquitous applications such as bio-medical diagnostics and environmental monitoring, etc. In such devices, nanostructures are the essential elements so that the nanofabrication methods have been major issues since the last couple of decades. However, most of nanofabrication methods are sophisticated and expensive due to the requirement of high-class cleanroom facilities, while low-cost and biocompatible materials have been already introduced in the microfluidic platforms. Thus, an off-the-shelf and biodegradable material for those nanostructures can complete the concept of an eco-friendly micro/nanofluidic platform. In this work, biodegradable materials originated from well-known organisms such as human nail plate and denatured hen egg (albumen and yolk) were rigorously investigated as a perm-selective nanoporous membrane. A simple micro/nanofluidic device integrated with such materials was fabricated to demonstrate nanofluidic phenomena. These distinctive evidences (the visualization of ion concentration polarization phenomenon, ohmic/limiting/over-limiting current behavior and surface charge-governed conductance) can fulfill the requirements of functional nanostructures for the nanofluidic applications. Therefore, while these materials were less robust than nano-lithographically fabricated structures, bio-oriented perm-selective materials would be utilized as a one of key elements of the biodegradable and eco friendly micro/nanofluidic applications.

Theory of shock electrodialysis I: Water dissociation and electrosmotic vortices

Shock electrodialysis (shock ED), an emerging electrokinetic process for water purification, leverages the new physics of deionization shock waves in porous media. In previous work, a simple leaky membrane model with surface conduction can explain the propagation of deionization shocks in a shock ED system, but it cannot quantitatively predict the deionization and conductance (which determines the energy consumption), and it cannot explain the selective removal of ions in experiments. This two-part series of work establishes a more comprehensive model for shock ED, which applies to multicomponent electrolytes and any electrical double layer thickness, captures the phenomena of electroosmosis, diffusioosmosis, and water dissociation, and incorporates more realistic boundary conditions. In this paper, we will present the model details and show that hydronium transport and electroosmotic vortices (at the inlet and outlet) play important roles in determining the deionization and conductance in shock ED. We also find that the results are quantitatively consistent with experimental data in the literature. Finally, the model is used to investigate design strategies for scale up and optimization.

Novel ionic separation mechanisms in electrically driven membrane processes

Electromembrane processes including electrodialysis (ED) and related processes are usually limited by diffusion transport of ions from a bulk solution to ion exchange membranes. The diffusion limited current (DLC) occurs when the concentration at membrane surfaces vanishes and approaches zero. Increasing the applied potential difference above this point has no substantial effect on ion transport and causes operational problems such as low current efficiency, high energy consumption, and mineral scaling. However, it is evident from numerous studies that operating at overlimiting current (OLC) is possible and allows one to enhance the mass transfer of an electromembrane process. While OLC is sometimes possible by electrochemical means, such as water splitting or current induced membrane discharge, it has been found that exotic ion transport mechanisms, such as ion concentration polarization in micro/nanofluidic system, deionization shock waves, and ionic bridges, can provide novel electrokinetic means of achieving OLC. In this paper, these novel ionic separation mechanisms and their role in enhanced current transfer are reviewed in the context of emerging electromembrane processes, such as shock ED and electrodeionization (EDI).

Electrodialytic Processes: Market Overview, Membrane Phenomena, Recent Developments and Sustainable Strategies

In the context of preserving and improving human health, electrodialytic processes are very promising perspectives. Indeed, they allow the treatment of water, preservation of food products, production of bioactive compounds, extraction of organic acids, and recovery of energy from natural and wastewaters without major environmental impact. Hence, the aim of the present review is to give a global portrait of the most recent developments in electrodialytic membrane phenomena and their uses in sustainable strategies. It has appeared that new knowledge on pulsed electric fields, electroconvective vortices, overlimiting conditions and reversal modes as well as recent demonstrations of their applications are currently boosting the interest for electrodialytic processes. However, the hurdles are still high when dealing with scale-ups and real-life conditions. Furthermore, looking at the recent research trends, potable water and wastewater treatment as well as the production of value-added bioactive products in a circular economy will probably be the main applications to be developed and improved. All these processes, taking into account their principles and specificities, can be used for specific eco-efficient applications. However, to prove the sustainability of such process strategies, more life cycle assessments will be necessary to convince people of the merits of coupling these technologies.

Biomolecule-guided cation regulation for dendrite-free metal anodes

Lithium (Li) or zinc (Zn) metal anodes have attracted interest for battery research due to their high theoretical capacities and low redox potentials. However, uncontrollable dendrite growth, especially under high current (>4 mA cm^-2), precludes reversable cycling in Li or Zn metal batteries with a high-loading (>4 mAh cm^-2), precludes reversable cycling in Li or Zn metal batteries with high-loading (>4 mAh cm^-2) cathode. We report a cation regulation mechanism to address this failure. Collagen hydrolysate coated on absorbed glass mat (CH@AGM) can simultaneously induce a deionization shock inside the separator and spread cations on the anode to promote uniform electrodeposition. Employing 24 mAh cm^-2 cathodes, Li and Zn metal batteries with CH@AGM delivered 600 cycles with a Coulombic efficiency of 99.7%. In comparison, pristine Li and Zn metal batteries only survive for 10 and 100 cycles, respectively. This approach enabled 400 cycles in a 200 Ah-class Zn metal battery, which suggests a scalable method to achieve dendrite-free anodes in various batteries.

Tutorial review: Enrichment and separation of neutral and charged species by ion concentration polarization focusing

Ion concentration polarization focusing (ICPF) is an electrokinetic technique, in which analytes are enriched and separated along a localized electric field gradient in the presence of a counter flow. This field gradient is generated by depletion of ions of the background electrolyte at an ion permselective junction. In this tutorial review, we summarize the fundamental principles and experimental parameters that govern selective ion transport and the stability of the enriched analyte plug. We also examine faradaic ICP (fICP), in which local ion concentration is modulated via electrochemical reactions as an attractive alternative to ICP that achieves similar performance with a decrease in both power consumption and Joule heating. The tutorial covers important challenges to the broad application of ICPF including undesired pH gradients, low volumetric throughput, samples that induce biofouling or are highly conductive, and limited approaches to on- or off-chip analysis. Recent developments in the field that seek to address these challenges are reviewed along with new approaches to maximize enrichment, focus uncharged analytes, and achieve enrichment and separation in water-in-oil droplets. For new practitioners, we discuss practical aspects of ICPF, such as strategies for device design and fabrication and the relative advantages of several types of ion selective junctions and electrodes. Lastly, we summarize tips and tricks for tackling common experimental challenges in ICPF.

Dynamic analysis of the extended space charge layer using chronopotentiometric measurements

In this paper, we experimentally verified the length (LESC) and the concentration (cESC) of the extended space charge (ESC) layer in front of the electrical double layer (EDL) using the chronopotentiometric measurement and the equivalent circuit model analysis. From the experimentation, the coupled-response of the EDL and the ESC layer was discriminated from the contribution of electro-osmotic flow (EOF). In addition, we derived the potential differences across the ESC (VESC) layer using the circuit model of the ICP layer under rigorous consideration of ESC and EDL. As a result, we obtained that VESC was linearly proportional to the square of the applied current (iapplied). Hence, LESC and cESC were quantitatively provided, where LESC is linear to the iapplied and cESC is constant regardless of iapplied. Thus, this experimentation could not only clarify an essential ICP theory but also guide in ESC-based applications.

Direct Visualization of Perm-Selective Ion Transportation

Perm-selective ion transportation in a nanoscale structure such as nanochannel, nanoporous membrane or nanojunction has been extensively studied with aids of nanofabrication technology for a decade. While theoretical and experimental advances pushed the phenomenon to seminal innovative applications, its basic observation has relied only on an indirect analysis such as current-voltage relation or fluorescent imaging adjacent to the nanostructures. Here we experimentally, for the first time, demonstrated a direct visualization of perm-selective ion transportation through the nanoscale space using an ionic plasma generation. A micro/nanofluidic device was employed for a micro bubble formation, plasma negation and penetration of the plasma along the nanojunction. The direct observation provided a keen evidence of perm-selectivity, i.e. allowing cationic species and rejecting anionic species. Furthermore, we can capture the plasma of lithium, which has lower mobility than sodium in aqueous state, passed the nanojunction faster than sodium due to the absence of hydrated shells around lithium. This simple, but essential visualization technique would be effective means not only for advancing the fundamental nanoscale electrokinetic study as well as interfacial ion transportation between liquid and plasma but also for providing the insight of new innovative engineering applications.

Investigation on the Stability of Random Vortices in an Ion Concentration Polarization Layer with Imposed Normal Fluid Flow

While nanoscale electrokinetic studies based on ion concentration polarization has been actively researched recently, random vortices naturally occur, leading to significantly destabilize in laboratory experiments or practical applications. These random vortices agitate the fluid inside microchannels and let the sample molecules seriously leak out preventing them from being controlled. Therefore, several trials have been reported to regulate those uninvited fluctuations by fluid flow tangential to a nanoporous membrane. Indeed, the influence of normal flow should be studied since the mass transport happens in the normal direction to the membrane. Thus, in this work, the nonlinear influence of normal flow to the instability near ion-selective surface was investigated by fully-coupled direct numerical simulation using COMSOL Multiphysics. The investigation on the effect of normal flow revealed that a space charge layer plays a significant role in the onset and growth of instability. The normal flow from the reservoir into the ion-selective surface pushed the space charge layer and decreased the size of vortices. However, there existed a maximum point for the growth of instability. The squeeze of the space charge layer increased the gradient of ion concentration in the layer, which resulted in escalating the velocity of vortices. On the other hand, the normal flow from the ion-selective surface into the reservoir suppressed the instability by spreading ions in the expanding space charge layer, leading to the reduction of ion concentration delayed the onset of instability. These two different mechanisms rendered asymmetric transition of stability as a function of the Peclet number and applied voltage. Therefore, this investigation would help understand the growth of instability and control the inevitable random vortices for the inhibition of fluid-agitation and leakage.

Controllable pH Manipulations in Micro/Nanofluidic Device Using Nanoscale Electrokinetics

Recently introduced nanoscale electrokinetic phenomenon called ion concentration polarization (ICP) has been suffered from serious pH changes to the sample fluid. A number of studies have focused on the origin of pH changes and strategies for regulating it. Instead of avoiding pH changes, in this work, we tried to demonstrate new ways to utilize this inevitable pH change. First, one can obtain a well-defined pH gradient in proton-received microchannel by applying a fixed electric current through a proton exchange membrane. Furthermore, one can tune the pH gradient on demand by adjusting the proton mass transportation (i.e., adjusting electric current). Secondly, we demonstrated that the occurrence of ICP can be examined by sensing a surrounding pH of electrolyte solution. When pH > threshold pH, patterned pH-responsive hydrogel inside a straight microchannel acted as a nanojunction to block the microchannel, while it did as a microjunction when pH < threshold pH. In case of forming a nanojunction, electrical current significantly dropped compared to the case of a microjunction. The strategies that presented in this work would be a basis for useful engineering applications such as a localized pH stimulation to biomolecules using tunable pH gradient generation and portable pH sensor with pH-sensitive hydrogel.

Surface conduction and electroosmotic flow around charged dielectric pillar arrays in microchannels

Dielectric microstructures have been reported to have a negative influence on permselective ion transportation because ions do not migrate in areas where the structures are located. However, the structure can promote the transportation if the membrane is confined to a microscopic scale. In such a scale where the area to volume ratio is significantly large, the primary driving mechanisms of the ion transportation transition from electro-convective instability (EOI) to surface conduction (SC) and electroosmotic flow (EOF). Here, we provide rigorous evidence on how the SC and EOF around the dielectric microstructures can accelerate the ion transportation by multi-physics simulations and experimental visualizations. The microstructures further polarize the ion distribution by SC and EOF so that ion carriers can travel to the membrane more efficiently. Furthermore, we verified, for the first time, that the arrangements of microstructures have a critical impact on the ion transportation. While convective flows are isolated in the crystal pillar configuration, the flows show an elongated pattern and create an additional path for ion current in the aligned pillar configuration. Therefore, the fundamental findings of the electrokinetic effects on the dielectric microstructures suggest an innovative application in micro/nanofluidic devices with high mass transport efficiency.

Continuous Separation of Radionuclides from Contaminated Water by Shock Electrodialysis

The increasing popularity of nuclear energy necessitates development of new methods to treat water that becomes contaminated with radioactive substances. Because this polluted water comprises several dissolved species (not all of which are radioactive), selective accumulation of the radionuclides is desirable to minimize the volume of nuclear waste and to facilitate its containment or disposal. In this article, we use shock electrodialysis to selectively, continuously, and efficiently remove cobalt and cesium from a feed of dissolved lithium, cobalt, cesium, and boric acid. This formulation models the contaminated water commonly found in light-water reactors and in other nuclear processes. In a three-pass process, a consistent trade-off is observed between the recovery of decontaminated water and the percentage of cobalt removed, which offers flexibility in operating the system. For example, 99.5% of cobalt can be removed with a water recovery of 43%, but up to 66% of the water can be recovered if deionization of cobalt is allowed to drop to 98.3%. In general, the energy consumed during this process (ranging between 1.76 and 4.8 kW h m^-3) is low because only charged species are targeted and virtually no energy is expended removing boric acid, the most abundant species in solution.

Elimination of pseudo-negative conductance by coercive steady state in perm-selective ion transportation

Ion concentration polarization (ICP) has drawn unprecedented attention due to its new underlying physics and engineering applications such as biomolecular preconcentrator and electrofluidic desalination. Typically, the current-voltage characteristic of ICP has three distinctive regimes with a positive slope in all regimes, but an unintentional negative slope ("overshoot current") was often observed in the Ohmic/limiting regime. This phenomenon impeded an exact estimation of electrokinetic properties of the ICP platform. Therefore, in this work, we eliminated overshoot current by limiting the length of the diffuse layer using a coercive injection of a fresh electrolyte solution. Both the visualization of ICP layer propagation and the measurement of current-voltage characteristics verifying the time for reaching the steady state within an effective length of a microchannel played a critical role. The most relevant parameter was shown to be the diffusion relaxation time which was directly correlated with the sweep rate of an external voltage. Using this new measurement platform, one can significantly reduce the time and labor for the electrokinetic studies and applications based on them.

Electrochemical impedance of electrodiffusion in charged medium under dc bias

An immobile charged species provides a charged medium for transport of charge carriers that is exploited in many applications, such as permselective membranes, doped semiconductors, biological ion channels, as well as porous media and microchannels with surface charges. In this paper, we theoretically study the electrochemical impedance of electrodiffusion in a charged medium by employing the Nernst-Planck equation and the electroneutrality condition with a background charge density. The impedance response is obtained under different dc bias conditions extending above the diffusion-limiting bias. We find a transition in the impedance behavior around the diffusion-limiting bias and present an analytical approximation for a weakly charged medium under an overlimiting bias.

Dynamics of driftless preconcentration using ion concentration polarization leveraged by convection and diffusion

Over the past several decades, separation and preconcentration methods of (bio)molecules have been actively developed for various biomedical and chemical processes such as disease diagnostics, point of care test and environmental monitoring. Among the great developments of the electrokinetic method in a micro/nanofluidic platform is the ion concentration polarization (ICP) phenomenon, in which a target molecule is accumulated near a permselective nanoporous membrane under an applied electric field. ICP method has been actively studied due to its easy implementation and high preconcentration/separation efficiency. However, the dynamic behavior of preconcentrated analytes has not yet been fully studied, especially driftless migration, where the applied electric field is orthogonal to the direction of the drift migration. Here, we demonstrate anomalous shapes of preconcentrated analytes (either plug or dumbbell shape) and the morphologies were analytically modeled by the leverage of convection and diffusion migration. This model was experimentally verified with various lengths of DNA and the limiting cases (convection-free environment in paper-based microfluidic device and extremely low diffusivity of red blood cells) were also shown to confirm the model. Thus, this study not only provides an insight into the fundamental electrokinetic dynamics of molecules in an ICP platform but also plays a guiding role for the design of a nanofluidic preconcentrator for a lab on a chip application.

Nanoelectrokinetic bufferchannel-less radial preconcentrator and online extractor by tunable ion depletion layer

Among various preconcentration strategies using nanofluidic platforms, a nanoscale electrokinetic phenomenon called ion concentration polarization (ICP) has been extensively utilized due to several advantages such as high preconcentration factor and no need of complex buffer exchange process. However, conventional ICP preconcentrator had difficulties in the recovery of preconcentrated sample and complicated buffer channels. To overcome these, bufferchannel-less radial micro/nanofluidic preconcentrator was developed in this work. Radially arranged microchannel can maximize the micro/nano membrane interface so that the samples were preconcentrated from each microchannel. All of preconcentrated plugs moved toward the center pipette tip and can be easily collected by just pulling out the tip installed at the center reservoir. For a simple and cost-effective fabrication, a commercial printer was used to print the nanoporous membrane as "Nafion-junction device." Various analytes such as polystyrene particle, fluorescent dye, and dsDNA were preconcentrated and extracted with the recovery ratio of 85.5%, 79.0%, and 51.3%, respectively. Furthermore, we used a super inkjet printer to print the silver electrode instead of nanoporous membrane to preconcentrate either type of charged analytes as "printed-electrode device." A Faradaic reaction was used as the main mechanism, and we successfully demonstrated the preconcentration of either negatively or positively charged analytes. The presented bufferchannel-less radial preconcentrator would be utilized as a practical and handy platform for analyzing low-abundant molecules.

Quantifying the pH shift induced by selective anodic electrochemical reactions in the ion concentration polarization phenomenon

Recently, the ion concentration polarization (ICP) phenomenon has been actively utilized for low abundance biomolecular preconcentration applications. Since ICP significantly rearranges the ion distribution near a permselective membrane, its detailed investigation should be conducted for developing efficient platforms. In particular, proton transport through the membrane critically affects the pH of sample solutions so that continuous monitoring or batch measurement of pH is the priority task to be carried out. Moreover, electrochemical reactions have been overlooked, even though an overpotential is applied to preconcentrate a sample under physiological conditions, and the electrodes are in direct contact with the sample biomolecules. In this work, we experimentally visualized and directly measured how the electrochemical reaction dominated the preconcentration efficiency using two types of electrode configurations; large exposed electrode area (LEEA) and small exposed electrode area (SEEA). Interestingly, significant pH variation was confirmed only in the case of SEEA. As a result, the BSA preconcentration was impeded within a short period in the case of SEEA, but loss-free preconcentration was achieved in the case of LEEA. Therefore, one should pay careful attention to the electrode design of electrokinetic operation, especially when pH-sensitive biomolecules are involved.

dCas9-mediated Nanoelectrokinetic Direct Detection of Target Gene for Liquid Biopsy

The-state-of-the-art bio- and nanotechnology have opened up an avenue to noninvasive liquid biopsy for identifying diseases from biomolecules in bloodstream, especially DNA. In this work, we combined sequence-specific-labeling scheme using mutated clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats associated protein 9 without endonuclease activity (CRISPR/dCas9) and ion concentration polarization (ICP) phenomenon as a mechanism to selectively preconcentrate targeted DNA molecules for rapid and direct detection. Theoretical analysis on ICP phenomenon figured out a critical mobility, elucidating two distinguishable concentrating behaviors near a nanojunction, a stacking and a propagating behavior. Through the modulation of the critical mobility to shift those behaviors, the C-C chemokine receptor type 5 ( CCR5) sequences were optically detected without PCR amplification. Conclusively, the proposed dCas9-mediated genetic detection methodology based on ICP would provide rapid and accurate micro/nanofluidic platform of liquid biopsies for disease diagnostics.

Deciphering ion concentration polarization-based electrokinetic molecular concentration at the micro-nanofluidic interface: theoretical limits and scaling laws

The electrokinetic molecular concentration (EMC) effect at the micro-nanofluidic interface, which enables million-fold preconcentration of biomolecules, is one of the most compelling yet least understood nanofluidic phenomena. Despite the tremendous interests in EMC and the substantial efforts devoted, the detailed mechanism of EMC remains an enigma so far owing to its high complexity, which gives rise to the significant scientific controversies outstanding for over a decade and leaves the precise engineering of EMC devices infeasible. We report a series of experimental and theoretical new findings that decipher the mechanism of EMC. We demonstrate the first elucidation of two separate operating regimes of EMC, and establish the first theoretical model that analytically yet concisely describes the system. We further unveil the dramatically different scaling behaviors of EMC in the two regimes, thereby clarifying the long-lasting controversies. We believe this work represents important progress towards the scientific understanding of EMC and related nano-electrokinetic systems, and would enable the rational design and optimization of EMC devices for a variety of applications.

Transient response of nonideal ion-selective microchannel-nanochannel devices

We report evidence of variation in ion selectivity of a fabricated microchannel-nanochannel device resulting in the appearance of a distinct local maximum in the overlimiting chronopotentiometric response. In this system consisting of shallow microchannels joined by a nanochannel, viscous shear at the microchannel walls suppresses the electro-osmotic instability and prevents any associated contribution to the nonmonotonic response. Thus, this response is primarily electrodiffusive. Numerical simulations indicate that concentration polarization develops not only within the microchannel but also within the nanochannel itself, with a local voltage maximum in the chronopotentiometric response correlated with interfacial depletion and having the classic i^{-2} Sands time dependence. Furthermore, the occurrence of the local maxima is correlated with the change in selectivity due to internal concentration polarization. Understanding the transient nonideal permselective response is essential for obtaining fundamental insight and for optimizing efficient operation of practical fabricated nanofluidic and membrane devices.

Surface Conduction in a Microchannel

Ionic current through a microchannel has drawn significant attention not only for fundamental electrokinetic research but also for the development of novel micro/nanofluidic applications. Among various ion transport mechanisms, surface conduction, which is a predominant mechanism in micro/nanofluidic devices, has been theoretically characterized based on two-dimensional analysis. However, its infinite axis assumption has become a barrier for direct application in practical micro/nanochannel networks. In this work, we conducted rigorous experiments to include all of the three-dimensional length scales. There, L/ A, the perimeter to area ratio of the microchannel cross-section, came up as a single parameter to quantitatively interpret the surface conductive ion transportation. Overlimiting conductance of microchannel devices increased with larger perimeter, which is equivalent to specific surface area, even with the same cross sectional area. Finally, a micro/nanofluidic diode with a different L/ A value on its forward and reverse channel was demonstrated as a simple application. The analysis presented could provide a practical guideline to design a micro/nanofluidic application.

Ion transport by gating voltage to nanopores produced via metal-assisted chemical etching method

In this work, we report a simple and low-cost way to create nanopores that can be employed for various applications in nanofluidics. Nano sized Ag particles in the range from 1 to 20 nm are formed on a silicon substrate with a de-wetting method. Then the silicon nanopores with an approximate 15 nm average diameter and 200 μm height are successfully produced by the metal-assisted chemical etching method. In addition, electrically driven ion transport in the nanopores is demonstrated for nanofluidic applications. Ion transport through the nanopores is observed and could be controlled by an application of a gating voltage to the nanopores.

Buffer-free integrative nanofluidic device for real-time continuous flow bioassays by ion concentration polarization

To perform precision medicine in real-time, a sensor capable of continuously monitoring target biomolecules secreted from a patient under dynamic situations is essential. In this study, a novel portable device combining an aptamer probe and a nanofluidic component was developed, enabling the buffer-free continuous monitoring of small molecules in biological fluids. This integration is synergistic: the aptamer sensor is used to bind target biomolecules, triggering a fluorescence signal change, while the nanofluidic component is applied to achieve ion concentration polarization and convert serum into a clean buffer for aptamer signal regeneration. To demonstrate the system's versatility, we measured various adenosine triphosphate concentrations in human serum for hours with high sensitivity and specificity at minute temporal resolution. Our results demonstrate that this integrative device can be applied for the continuous measurement of target biomolecules and online signal regeneration in patient samples without the use of bulky clean buffer solutions for dynamic real-time healthcare.
