Irreversible Adsorption Governs the Equilibration of Thin Polymer Films

Intramolecular dynamic coupling slows surface relaxation of polymer glasses

Over the past three decades, studies have indicated a mobile surface layer with steep gradients on glass surfaces. Among various glasses, polymers are unique because intramolecular interactions - combined with chain connectivity - can alter surface dynamics, but their fundamental role has remained elusive. By devising polymer surfaces occupied by chain loops of various penetration depths, combined with surface dissipation experiments and Monte Carlo simulations, we demonstrate that the intramolecular dynamic coupling along surface chains causes the sluggish bulk polymers to suppress the fast surface dynamics. Such effect leads to that accelerated segmental relaxation on polymer glass surfaces markedly slows when the surface polymers extend chain loops deeper into the film interior. The surface mobility suppression due to the intramolecular coupling reduces the magnitude of the reduction in glass transition temperature commonly observed in thin films, enabling new opportunities for tailoring polymer properties at interfaces and under confinement and producing glasses with enhanced thermal stability.

Surface mobility gradient and emergent facilitation in glassy films

Confining glassy polymers into films can substantially modify their local and film-averaged properties. We present a lattice model of film geometry with void-mediated facilitation behaviors but free from any elasticity effect. We analyze the spatially varying viscosity to delineate the transport properties of glassy films. The film mobility measurements reported by Yang et al., Science, 2010, 328, 1676 are successfully reproduced. The flow exhibits a crossover from a simple viscous flow to a surface-dominated regime as the temperature decreases. The propagation of a highly mobile front induced by the free surface is visualized in real space. Our approach provides a microscopic treatment of the observed glassy phenomena.

Tracing the slow Arrhenius process deep in the glassy state-quantitative evaluation of the dielectric relaxation of bulk samples and thin polymer films in the temperature domain

The slow Arrhenius process (SAP) is a dielectric mode connected to thermally activated equilibration mechanisms, allowing for a fast reduction in free energy in liquids and glasses. The SAP, however, is still poorly understood, and so far, this process has mainly been investigated at temperatures above the glass transition. By employing a combination of methods to analyze dielectric measurements under both isochronal and isothermal conditions, we were able to quantitatively reproduce the dielectric response of the SAP of different polymers and to expand the experimental regime over which this process can be observed down to lower temperatures, up to 70 K below the glass transition. Employing thin films of thicknesses varying between 10 and 800 nm, we further verified that the peak shape and activation energy of the SAP of poly(4-bromostyrene) are not sensitive to temperature, nor do they vary upon confinement at the nanoscale level. These observations confirm the preliminary trends reported for other polymers. We find that one single set of parameters-meaning the activation barrier and the pre-exponential factor, respectively, linked to the enthalpic and entropic components of the process-can describe the dynamics of the SAP in both the supercooled liquid and glassy states, in bulk and thin films. These results are discussed in terms of possible molecular origins of the slow Arrhenius process in polymers.

Enthalpy-entropy compensation in the slow Arrhenius process

The Meyer-Neldel compensation law, observed in a wide variety of chemical reactions and other thermally activated processes, provides a proportionality between the entropic and the enthalpic components of an energy barrier. By analyzing 31 different polymer systems, we show that such an intriguing behavior is encountered also in the slow Arrhenius process, a recently discovered microscopic relaxation mode, responsible for several equilibration mechanisms both in the liquid and the glassy state. We interpret this behavior in terms of the multiexcitation entropy model, indicating that overcoming large energy barriers can require a high number of low-energy local excitations, providing a multiphonon relaxation process.

Film Thickness Dependent Stability and Glass Transition Temperature of Polymer Films Produced by Physical Vapor Deposition

We report measurements of the onset temperature of rejuvenation, T_{onset}, and the fictive temperature, T_{f}, for ultrathin stable polystyrene with thicknesses from 10 to 50 nm prepared by physical vapor deposition. We also measure the T_{g} of these glasses on the first cooling after rejuvenation as well as the density anomaly of the as-deposited material. Both the T_{g} in rejuvenated films and the T_{onset} in stable films decrease with decreasing film thickness. The T_{f} value increases for decreasing film thickness. The density increase typical of stable glasses also decreases with decreasing film thickness. Collectively, the results are consistent with a decrease in apparent T_{g} due to the existence of a mobile surface layer, as well as a decrease in the film stability as the thickness is decreased. The results provide the first self-consistent set of measurements of stability in ultrathin films of stable glass.

Surface and bulk relaxation of vapor-deposited polystyrene glasses

We have studied the liquid-like response of the surface of vapor-deposited glassy films of polystyrene to the introduction of gold nanoparticles on the surface. The build-up of polymer material was measured as a function of time and temperature for both as-deposited films, as well as films that have been rejuvenated to become normal glasses cooled from the equilibrium liquid. The temporal evolution of the surface profile is well described by the characteristic power law of capillary-driven surface flows. In all cases, the surface evolution of the as-deposited films and the rejuvenated films is enhanced compared to bulk and is not easily distinguishable from each other. The temperature dependence of the measured relaxation times determined from the surface evolution is found to be quantitatively comparable to similar studies for high molecular weight spincast polystyrene. Comparisons to numerical solutions of the glassy thin film equation provide quantitative estimates of the surface mobility. For temperatures sufficiently close to the glass-transition temperature, particle embedding is also measured and used as a probe of bulk dynamics, and, in particular, bulk viscosity.

Physical Aging of Polystyrene Confined in Anodic Aluminum Oxide Nanopores

We investigated the glassy dynamics of polystyrene (PS) confined in anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) nanopores by differential scanning calorimetry. Based on the outcome of our experiments, we show that the cooling rate applied to process the 2D confined PS melt has a significant impact on both the glass transition and the structural relaxation in the glassy state. A single glass transition temperature (T_g) is observed in quenched samples, while slow-cooled PS chains show two T_gs corresponding to a core-shell structure. The former phenomenon resembles what is observed in freestanding structures, while the latter is imputed to the adsorption of PS onto AAO walls. A more complex picture was drawn for physical aging. In the case of quenched samples, we observed a non-monotonic trend of the apparent aging rate that in 400 nm pores, reaches a value almost twice as larger than what is measured in bulk and decreases upon further confinement in smaller nanopores. For slow-cooled samples, by adequately varying the aging conditions, we were able to control the equilibration kinetics and either separate the two aging processes or induce an intermediate aging regime. We propose a possible explanation of these findings in terms of distribution in free volume and the presence of different aging mechanisms.

New Insights from Nonequilibrium Kinetics Studies on Highly Polar S-Methoxy-PC Infiltrated into Pores

Herein, the annealing of highly polar (S)-(-)-4-methoxymethyl-1,3-dioxolan-2-one (S-methoxy-PC) within alumina and silica porous membranes characterized by different pore diameters was studied by means of dielectric spectroscopy. We found a significant slowing down of the structural dynamics of confined S-methoxy-PC with annealing time below and, surprisingly, also above the glass transition temperatures of the interfacial layer, T_{g,interfacial}. Furthermore, unexpectedly, a change in the slope of temperature dependencies of the characteristic time scale of this process τ_anneal, at T_{g,interfacial} for all confined samples, was reported. By modeling τ_anneal(T), we noted that the observed enormous variation of τ_anneal results from a decrease of the pore radius due to the vitrification of the interfacial molecules. This indicates that the enhanced dynamics of confined materials upon cooling is mainly controlled by the interfacial molecules.

Non-equilibrium Effects of Polymer Dynamics under Nanometer Confinement: Effects of Architecture and Molar Mass

The non-equilibrium dynamics of linear and star-shaped cis-1,4 polyisoprenes confined within nanoporous alumina is explored as a function of pore size, d, molar mass, and functionality (f = 2, 6, and 64). Two thermal protocols are tested: one resembling a quasi-static process (I) and another involving fast cooling followed by annealing (II). Although both protocols give identical equilibrium times, it is through protocol I that it is easier to extract the equilibrium times, t_eq, by the linear relationships of the characteristic peak frequencies with time and rate, respectively, as log(f_max) = C₁ - k log(t) and log(f_max) = C₂ + λ log(β). Both thermal protocols establish the existence of a critical temperature (at T_c, where k → 0 and λ → 0) below which non-equilibrium effects set-in. The critical temperature depends on the degree of confinement, 2R_g/d, and on molecular architecture. Strikingly, establishing equilibrium dynamics at all temperatures above the bulk, T_g, requires 2R_g/d ∼ 0.02, i.e., pore diameters that are much larger than the chain dimensions. This reflects non-equilibrium configurations of the adsorbed layer that extent away from the pore walls. The equilibrium times depend strongly on temperature, pore size, and functionality. In general, star-shaped polymers require longer times to reach equilibrium because of the higher tendency for adsorption. Both thermal protocols produced an increasing dielectric strength for the segmental and chain modes. The increase was beyond any densification, suggesting enhanced orientation correlations of subchain dipoles.

Decoupling of Glassy Dynamics from Viscosity in Thin Supported Poly(n-butyl methacrylate) Films

We utilized fast scanning calorimetry to characterize the glass transition temperature (T_g) and intrinsic molecular mobility of low-molecular-weight poly(n-butyl methacrylate) thin films of varying thicknesses. We found that the T_g and intrinsic molecular mobility were coupled, showing no film thickness-dependent variation. We further employed a unique noncontact capillary nanoshearing technique to directly probe layer-resolved gradients in the rheological response of these films. We found that layer-resolved shear mobility was enhanced with a reduction in film thickness, whereas the effective viscosity decreased. Our results highlight the importance of polymer–substrate attractive interactions and free surface-promoted enhanced mobility, establishing a competitive nanoconfinement effect in poly(n-butyl methacrylate) thin films. Moreover, the findings indicate a decoupling in the thickness-dependent variation of T_g and intrinsic molecular mobility with the mechanical responses (shear mobility and effective viscosity).

Effect of Oligomer Segregation on the Aggregation State and Strength at the Polystyrene/Substrate Interface

The interfacial strength of polystyrene (PS) with and without PS oligomers in contact with a glass substrate was examined to determine the relationship between the interfacial aggregation state and adhesion. The shear bond strength and adsorbed layer thickness of neat PS exhibited a similar dependence on the thermal annealing time: they increased to constant values within almost the same time. This implies that the adhesion of the polymer is closely related to the formation of an adsorbed layer at the adhesion interface. Nevertheless, in the case of PS with a small amount of oligomer, the shear bond strength decreased, while the adsorbed layer thickness was almost the same as that of neat PS. Based on the results of interfacial analyses, we propose that the interfacial segregation of the oligomer reduced the entanglement between the interfacial free chains in the adsorbed layer and the bulk chains.

Fast equilibration mechanisms in disordered materials mediated by slow liquid dynamics

The rate at which a nonequilibrium system decreases its free energy is commonly ascribed to molecular relaxation processes, arising from spontaneous rearrangements at the microscopic scale. While equilibration of liquids usually requires density fluctuations at time scales quickly diverging upon cooling, growing experimental evidence indicates the presence of a different, alternative pathway of weaker temperature dependence. Such equilibration processes exhibit a temperature-invariant activation energy, on the order of 100 kJ mol^-1. Here, we identify the underlying molecular process responsible for this class of Arrhenius equilibration mechanisms with a slow mode (SAP), universally observed in the liquid dynamics of thin films. The SAP, which we show is intimately connected to high-temperature flow, can efficiently drive melts and glasses toward more stable, less energetic states. Our results show that measurements of liquid dynamics can be used to predict the equilibration rate in the glassy state.

The role of the molecular weight of the adsorbed layer on a substrate in the suppressed dynamics of supported thin polystyrene films

The adsorbed layer on a solid surface plays a crucial role in the dynamics of nanoconfinement polymer materials. However, the influence of the adsorbed layer is complex, and clarifying this influence on the dynamics of confined polymers remains a major challenge. In this paper, SiO₂-Si substrates with various thicknesses and adsorbed layers of PS with various molecular weights were used to reveal the effect of the adsorbed layer on the corresponding segmental dynamics of the supported thin PS films. Strongly suppressed segmental dynamics of thin PS films were observed for the films supported on thicker adsorbed layers or prepared using higher molecular weight. Neutron reflectivity revealed that the overlap region thickness between the adsorbed layer and the top overlayer increased with increasing thickness and molecular weight of the adsorbed layer, both of which correlate well with the distance over which the polystyrene dynamics were depressed by the adsorbed layer. The results show that the influencing distance of the adsorbed layer is related to the overlap zone formed between the adsorption layer and the upper thin film. The effect of the adsorbed layer molecular weight can be ascribed to the fact that large loops and long tails in the adsorbed layer result in stronger interpenetrations and entanglements between polymer chains in the adsorbed layer and in the overlayer, causing a stronger substrate effect and suppression of the segment dynamics of the supported thin PS films.

Experimental and Modeling Comparison of the Dynamics of Capped and Freestanding Poly(2-chlorostyrene) Films

Proximity to a nonrepulsive wall is commonly considered to cause slower dynamics, which should lead to greater relaxation times for capped thin polymer films than for bulk melts. To the contrary, here we demonstrate that Al-capped films of poly(2-chlorostyrene) exhibit enhanced dynamics with respect to the bulk, similar to analogous freestanding films. To quantitatively resolve the impact of interfaces on whole film dynamics, we analyzed the experimental data via the Cooperative Free Volume rate model. We found that the interfacial region adjacent to a cap contains an excess of free volume (relative to the bulk) about half of that proximate to a free surface. Employing a useful analogy between confinement and pressure effects, we estimated that the effect of capping an 18 nm freestanding film would be equivalent to applying a pressure increase of 19 MPa.

Decoupling Role of Film Thickness and Interfacial Effect on Polymer Thin Film Dynamics

The film thickness and substrate interface are the two most common parameters to tune the dynamics of supported thin films. Here, we investigated the glass transition temperature (T_g) and thermal expansion of thin poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) films with various thicknesses and different interfacial effects. We showed that, although the T_g of the thin films can be modulated equivalently by the two factors, their ability to change the expansivity (β) is quite different; that is, β increases notably with a reduction in the thickness, while it is insensitive to perturbations at the interface. We attribute the deviation in modulating β by the thickness and the interfacial effect to the disparate abilities to change the free volume content in the film by a free surface and substrate interface. This leads to a situation where thin films with dissimilar thicknesses and interfacial properties can have the same T_g but very different β values, suggesting that T_g alone cannot unequivocally quantify thin film dynamics.

Cyclic Topology Enhancing Structural Ordering and Stability of Comb-Shaped Polypeptoid Thin Films against Melt-Induced Dewetting

We investigated the effect of cyclic chain topology on the molecular ordering and thermal stability of comb-shaped polypeptoid thin films on silicon (Si) substrates. Cyclic and linear poly(N-decylglycine) (PNDG) bearing long n-decyl side chains were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of N-decylglycine-derived N-carboxyanhydrides. When the spin-coated thin films were subjected to thermal annealing at temperatures above the melting temperature (T > T m), the cyclic PNDG films exhibited significantly enhanced stability against melt-induced dewetting than the linear counterparts (l-PNDG). When recrystallized at temperatures below the crystallization temperature (T < T c), the homogeneous c-PNDG films exhibit enhanced crystalline ordering relative to the macroscopically dewetted l-PNDG films. Both cyclic and linear PNDG molecules adopt cis-amide conformations in the crystalline film, which transition into trans-amide conformations upon melting. A top-down solvent leaching treatment of both l/c-PNDG films revealed the formation of an irreversibly physisorbed monolayer with similar thickness (ca. 3 nm) on the Si substrate. The physisorbed monolayers are more disordered relative to the respective thicker crystalline films for both cyclic and linear PNDGs. Upon heating above T m, the adsorbed c-PNDG chains adopt trans-amide backbone conformation identical with the free c-PNDG molecules in the molten film. By contrast, the backbone conformations of l-PNDG chains in the adsorbed layers are notably different from those of the free chains in the molten film. We postulate that the conformational disparity between the chains in the physically adsorbed layers versus the free chains in the molten film is an important factor to account for the difference in the thermal stability of PNDG thin films. These findings highlight the use of cyclic chain topology to suppress the melt-induced dewetting in polymer thin films.

Direct observation of desorption of a melt of long polymer chains

Tuning the thermodynamic state of a material has a tremendous impact on its performance. In the case of polymers placed in proximity of a solid wall, this is possible by annealing above the glass transition temperature, Tg, which induces the formation of an adsorbed layer. Whether heating to higher temperatures would result in desorption, thereby reverting the thermodynamic state of the interface, has so far remained elusive, due to the interference of degradation. Here, we employ fast scanning calorimetry, allowing to investigate the thermodynamics of the interface while heating at 104 K s-1. We show that applying such rate to adsorbed polymer layers permits avoiding degradation and, therefore, we provide clear-cut evidence of desorption of a polymer melt. We found that the enthalpy and temperature of desorption are independent of the annealing temperature, which, in analogy to crystallization/melting, indicates that adsorption/desorption is a first order thermodynamic transition.

To Understand Film Dynamics Look to the Bulk

We show that shifts in dynamics of confined systems relative to that of the bulk material originate in the properties of bulk alone, and exhibit the same form of behavior as when different bulk isobars are compared. For bulk material, pressure-dependent structural relaxation times follow τ(T,V)∝exp[f(T)×g(V)]. When two states (isobars) of the material, "1" and "2", are compared at the same temperature this leads to a form τ_{2}∝τ_{1}^{c}, where c=g[V_{2}(T)]/g[V_{1}(T)]. Using equation of state analysis and two models for P-dependent dynamics, we show that c is approximately T independent, and that it can be very simply expressed in terms of either the (free) volume above the close packed state (V_{free}) or the activation energy for cooperative motion. The effect of changing state through a shift in pressure (P_{1} to P_{2}) is thus mechanistically traceable to cooperativity changing with density, through V_{free}. The connection with confined dynamics follows when 1 and 2 are taken as bulk and film at ambient P, differing in density only due to the film surface. The general form for τ(T,V) also illuminates why samples in different states (film vs bulk, high P vs low) trend toward the same relaxation behavior at high T.

Effect of Surface Chemistry on the Glass-Transition Dynamics of Poly(phenyl methyl siloxane) Confined in Alumina Nanopores

Broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) are combined to study the effect of changes in the surface chemistry on the segmental dynamics of glass-forming polymer, poly(methylphenylsiloxane) (PMPS), confined in anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) nanopores. Measurements were carried for native and silanized nanopores of the same pore sizes. Nanopore surfaces are modified with the use of two silanizing agents, chlorotrimethylsilane (ClTMS) and (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTMOS), of much different properties. The results of the dielectric studies have demonstrated that for the studied polymer located in 55 nm pores, changes in the surface chemistry and thermal treatment allows the confinement effect seen in temperature evolution of the segmental relaxation time, τα(T) to be removed. The bulk-like evolution of the segmental relaxation time can also be restored upon long-time annealing. Interestingly, the time scale of such equilibration process was found to be independent of the surface conditions. The calorimetric measurements reveal the presence of two glass-transition events in DSC thermograms of all considered systems, implying that the changes in the interfacial interactions introduced by silanization are not strong enough to inhibit the formation of the interfacial layer. Although DSC traces confirmed the two-glass-transition scenario, there is no clear evidence that vitrification of the interfacial layer affects τα(T) for nanopore-confined polymer.

Review and reproducibility of forming adsorbed layers from solvent washing of melt annealed films

Recent studies suggest chain adsorption in the melt may be responsible for a number of property changes in thin films by making correlations between the residual adsorbed layer thickness h_ads(t) measured after a given solvent washing procedure as a function of annealing time t of the film at an elevated temperature prior to this solvent rinse. This procedure, frequently called "Guiselin's experiment", refers to the thought experiment proposed in a 1992 theoretical treatment by Guiselin that assumed chain segments in contact with the surface are irreversibly adsorbed whereby unadsorbed chains could be washed away by solvent without disturbing the adsorbed substrate contact points in the melt. In the present work, we review this recent literature, identifying and experimentally testing a common protocol for forming adsorbed layers h_ads(t) from solvent washing melt films. We find h_ads(t) curves to be far less reproducible and reliable than implied in the literature, strongly dependent on solvent washing and substrate cleaning conditions, and annealing at elevated temperatures is unnecessary as densification of films sitting at room temperature makes the glassy film harder to wash off, leaving behind h_ads of comparable thickness. This review also summarizes literature understanding developed over several decades of study on polymer adsorption in solution, which experimentally demonstrated that polymer chains in solution are highly mobile, diffusing and exchanging on the surface even in the limit of strong adsorption, contradicting Guiselin's assumption. Preformed adsorbed layers of different thicknesses h_ads are shown to not affect the average glass transition temperature or physical aging of 30 nm thick films. In summary, a number of open questions and implications are discussed related to thin films and polymer nanocomposites.

Irreversible adsorption of polymer melts and nanoconfinement effects

For almost a decade, growing experimental evidence has revealed a strong correlation between the properties of nanoconfined polymers and the number of chains irreversibly adsorbed onto nonrepulsive interfaces, e.g. the supporting substrate of thin polymer coatings, or nanofillers dispersed in polymer melts. Based on such a correlation, it has already been possible to tailor structural and dynamics properties - such as the glass transition temperature, the crystallization rate, the thermal expansion coefficients, the viscosity and the wettability - of nanomaterials by controlling the adsorption kinetics. This evidence indicates that irreversible adsorption affects nanoconfinement effects. More recently, also the opposite phenomenon was experimentally observed: nanoconfinement alters interfacial interactions and, consequently, also the number of chains adsorbed in equilibrium conditions. In this review we discuss this intriguing interplay between irreversible adsorption and nanoconfinement effects in ultrathin polymer films. After introducing the methods currently used to prepare adsorbed layers and to measure the number of irreversibly adsorbed chains, we analyze the models employed to describe the kinetics of adsorption in polymer melts. We then discuss the structure of adsorbed polymer layers, focusing on the complex macromolecular architecture of interfacial chains and on their thermal expansion; we examine the way in which the structure of the adsorbed layer affects the thermal glass transition temperature, vitrification, and crystallization. By analyzing segmental dynamics of 1D confined systems, we describe experiments to track the changes in density during adsorption. We conclude this review with an analysis of the impact of nanoconfinement on adsorption, and a perspective on future work where we also address the key ideas of irreversibility, equilibration and long-range interactions.

Effect of Molecular Architecture on Conformational Relaxation of Polymer Chains at Interfaces

Dynamics of polymer chains near an interface with an inorganic material are believed to strongly affect the physical properties of polymers in nanocomposites and thin films. An effect of molecular architecture on the conformational relaxation behavior of polystyrene (PS) chains at the quartz interface using sum-frequency generation spectroscopy is reported here. The relaxation dynamics of chains in direct contact with the quartz interface is slower with a star-shaped architecture than that with its linear counterpart. The extent of the delay becomes more pronounced with increasing number of arms. This can be explained in terms of the superior interfacial activity to the quartz surface for the star-shaped PS.

Density of Obstacles Affects Diffusion in Adsorbed Polymer Layers

The translational diffusion of molecules dispersed into polymer matrices slows down tremendously when approaching a nonrepulsive interface. To unravel the origin of this phenomenon, we investigated the diffusion of molecular probes in the direction normal to an adsorbing wall. Using adsorbed polymer layers as matrices, we were able to decouple interfacial and finite size effects and determined the relation between the diffusion time and the area available at the polymer/solid interface. Based on the results of our investigation, we present a physical picture, suggesting that the reduction in diffusion rate is correlated to the degree of chain adsorption onto the substrate, that is, the density of surface obstacles encountered by tracer molecules.

Substrate Roughness Speeds Up Segmental Dynamics of Thin Polymer Films

We show that the segmental mobility of thin films of poly(4-chlorostyrene) prepared under nonequilibrium conditions gets enhanced in the proximity of rough substrates. This trend is in contrast to existing treatments of roughness which conclude it is a source of slower dynamics, and to measurements of thin films of poly(2-vinylpiridine), whose dynamics is roughness invariant. Our experimental evidence indicates the faster interfacial dynamics originate from a reduction in interfacial density, due to the noncomplete filling of substrate asperities. Importantly, our results agree with the same scaling that describes the density dependence of bulk materials, correlating segmental mobility to a term exponential in the specific volume, and with empirical relations linking an increase in glass transition temperature to larger interfacial energy.

Elucidating the impact of extreme nanoscale confinement on segmental and chain dynamics of unentangled poly(cis-1,4-isoprene)

Broadband dielectric spectroscopy is employed to probe dynamics in low molecular weight poly(cis-1,4-isoprene) (PI) confined in unidirectional silica nanopores with mean pore diameter, D, of 6.5 nm. Three molecular weights of PI (3, 7 and 10 kg/mol) were chosen such that the ratio of D to the polymer radius of gyration, R_g, is varied from 3.4, 2.3 to 1.9, respectively. It is found that the mean segmental relaxation rate remains bulk-like but an additional process arises at lower frequencies with increasing molecular weight (decreasing D/R_g. In contrast, the mean relaxation rates of the end-to-end dipole vector corresponding to chain dynamics are found to be slightly slower than that in the bulk for the systems approaching D/R_g ∼ 2, but faster than the bulk for the polymer with the largest molecular weight. The analysis of the spectral shapes of the chain relaxation suggests that the resulting dynamics of the 10kg/mol PI confined at length-scales close to that of the R_g are due to non-ideal chain conformations under confinement decreasing the chain relaxation times. The understanding of these faster chain dynamics of polymers under extreme geometrical confinement is necessary in designing nanodevices that contain polymeric materials within substrates approaching the molecular scale.

Studying tautomerism in an important pharmaceutical glibenclamide confined in the thin nanometric layers

The uniform thin films with variable thicknesses (d = 49, 120, 220 nm) of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) glibenclamide (GCM) was spin-coated and investigated using broadband dielectric, grazing incident FTIR spectroscopies, atomic force microscopy, and ellipsometry. Data analysis revealed that nanoconfined systems consist of a mixture of amide and imidic acid forms of this pharmaceutical, wherein the ratios of both tautomeric forms in the thin films were different with respect to the molten supercooled bulk system. Moreover, changes in the populations of glibenclamide tautomers, i.e. higher amide to imides ratio in the spatially restricted API with respect to the bulk sample, had a strong impact on the character of the proton transfer reaction. In this context, the kinetic curves constructed on the base of infrared data for the bulk system follow the sigmoidal shape, characteristic for the autocatalytic reaction, while results obtained for the confined samples provide exponential character and indicate first-order transformation. This allows hypothesizing that the autocatalytic nature of the tautomerism in the bulk sample is most likely related to the formation of the amide tautomers which further catalyze the progress of imide-amide transformation. Our results are the first studies showing that the change in the thickness of the film may affect the properties and isomerization kinetics in a pharmaceutical systems. Finally, our data open a new perspective for developing new drug delivery systems.

Self-Assembled Copolymer Adsorption Layer-Induced Block Copolymer Nanostructures in Thin Films

In polymer thin films, the bottom polymer chains are irreversibly adsorbed onto the substrates creating an ultrathin layer. Although this thin layer (only a few nanometers thick) governs all film properties, an understanding of this adsorbed layer remains elusive, and thus, its effective control has yet to be achieved, particularly in block copolymer (BCP) thin films. Herein, we employ self-assembled copolymer adsorption layers (SCALs), transferred from the air/water interfacial self-assembly of BCPs, as an effective control of the adsorbed layer in BCP thin films. SCALs replace the natural adsorbed layer, irreversibly adsorbing onto the substrates when other BCP is additionally coated on the SCALs. We further show that SCALs guide the thin film nanostructures because they provide topological restrictions and enthalpic/entropic preferences for a BCP self-assembly. The SCAL-induced self-assembly enables unprecedented control of nanostructures, creating novel nanopatterns such as spacing-controlled hole/dot patterns, dotted-line patterns, dash-line patterns, and anisotropic cluster patterns with exceptional controllability.

Dynamics Gradient of Polymer Chains near a Solid Interface

The relaxation dynamics of polyisoprene (PI) and nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) chains at the SiO₂ interface were directly probed as a function of distance from the SiO₂ surface using time-resolved evanescent wave-induced fluorescence anisotropy, dielectric relaxation spectroscopy, and sum-frequency generation spectroscopy. We found the presence of the dynamics gradient of chains in the interfacial region with the SiO₂ surface and tried to assign it to the two kinds of adsorbed chains, namely, loosely and strongly adsorbed, at the interface. The segmental relaxation of chains in the strongly adsorbed layer at the interface could be slower than that of bulk chains by more than 10 orders.

Solution filtering affects the glassy dynamics of spincoated thin films of poly(4-chlorostyrene)

We investigated the impact of sample preparation on the glassy dynamics of thin films of poly(4-chlorostyrene), a polymer whose molecular mobility is particularly sensitive to changes in the specific volume. Samples were obtained by spincoating, the technique most commonly used to prepare thin organic layers, which consists of pouring dilute polymer solutions onto a plate rotating at a high rate. Our experimental results demonstrate that filtering the solutions before spincoating affects the value of the segmental relaxation time of the as-prepared films. Thin polymer layers obtained via filtered solutions show accelerated segmental dynamics upon confinement at the nanoscale level, once below 100nm, while the samples obtained via unfiltered solutions exhibit bulk-like dynamics down to 15-20nm. We analyzed these results by means of the cooperative free volume rate model, considering a larger free volume content in thin films obtained via filtered solutions. The validity of the model predictions was finally verified by measurements of irreversible adsorption, confirming a larger adsorbed amount, corresponding to a higher specific volume, in the case of samples obtained via unfiltered solutions. Our results prove that filtering is a crucial step in the preparation of thin films, and it could be used to switch on and off nanoconfinement effects.

The cooperative free volume rate model for segmental dynamics: Application to glass-forming liquids and connections with the density scaling approach⋆

In this paper, we apply the cooperative free volume (CFV) rate model for pressure-dependent dynamics of glass-forming liquids and polymer melts. We analyze segmental relaxation times, [Formula: see text] , as a function of temperature (T and free volume ( [Formula: see text] , and make substantive comparisons with the density scaling approach. [Formula: see text] , the difference between the total volume (V and the volume at close-packing, is predicted independently of the dynamics for any temperature and pressure using the locally correlated lattice (LCL) equation-of-state (EOS) analysis of characteristic thermodynamic data. We discuss the underlying physical motivation in the CFV and density scaling models, and show that their key, respective, material parameters are connected, where the CFV b parameter and the density scaling [Formula: see text] parameter each characterize the relative sensitivity of dynamics to changes in T , vs. changes in V . We find [Formula: see text] , where [Formula: see text] is the value predicted by the LCL EOS at the ambient [Formula: see text] . In comparing the predictive power of the two models we highlight the CFV advantage in yielding a universal linear collapse of relaxation data using a minimal set of parameters, compared to the same parameter space yielding a changing functional form in the density scaling approach. Further, we demonstrate that in the low data limit, where there is not enough data to characterize the density scaling model, the CFV model may still be successfully applied, and we even use it to predict the correct [Formula: see text] parameter.

Effect of Local Chain Conformation in Adsorbed Nanolayers on Confined Polymer Molecular Mobility

Interfaces play an important role in modifying the dynamics of polymers confined to the nanoscale. We demonstrate that the distance over which an interface suppresses molecular mobility in poly(styrene) thin films can be systematically increased by tens of nanometers by controlling the chain of conformation, i.e., the height of the loops in irreversibly adsorbed nanolayers. These effects arise from topological interaction between adsorbed and neighboring unadsorbed chains, respectively, which increase their motional coupling to facilitate the propagation of suppressed dynamics originating at the interface, thus highlighting the ability to manipulate interfacial effects by local conformation of chains in adsorbed nanolayers.

Discharge of the Nanopore Confinement Effect on the Glass Transition Dynamics via Viscous Flow

Using dielectric spectroscopy, we demonstrate that confinement-induced changes in the glass transition dynamics, as observed for polymethylphenylsiloxane in alumina nanopores, reveal a pronounced nonequilibrium nature. Our results indicate that glass formers confined to nanopores are able to recover their bulklike mobility. We found that the characteristic time constant of such an equilibration process correlates with an extremely slow viscous flow rate in cylindrical channels of nanometer size. Thus, all the way to equilibrium, confinement effects seen in faster segmental dynamics are released through the viscous flow which eventually helps to eliminate surplus volume gained by nanoconstrained polymers upon cooling.

Polymer-Polymer Interfacial Perturbation on the Glass Transition of Supported Low Molecular Weight Polystyrene Thin Films

Clarifying interfacial perturbation on polymer relaxation is important for polymer material development. Herein we investigated polymer-polymer interfacial perturbation on low molecular weight (MW) polystyrene (PS) thin film (15-180 nm) glass transition by depositing various polymers atop PS films. Overall, rubbery topcoats induced T_g depression of PS thin film (below 60 nm), while glassy topcoats induced T_g elevation of PS thin film (below 30 nm). Importantly, for the rubbery topcoat, T_g perturbation strength is largely dependent on the T_g difference between interfacial polymers and a larger T_g difference would induce stronger perturbation, while for the glassy topcoat this dependence is inconspicuous. Meanwhile, the interfacial perturbation length during PS glass transition by rubbery topcoats is estimated to be around 8 nm, while it is considered to be about 3.5 nm for glassy topcoats. The different interfacial perturbation length induced by disparate topcoats was accounted for by their different perturbation strength on adjacent PS molecules and disparate interfacial roughness. The results can promote the understanding of polymer interfacial perturbation and benefit the design and development of polymer-based materials.

Dynamical Correlations for Statistical Copolymers from High-Throughput Broad-Band Dielectric Spectroscopy

Broad-band dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) provides a powerful method of characterizing relaxation dynamics in diverse materials. Here we describe and employ a novel instrument for high-throughput broad-band dielectric spectroscopy (HTBDS) that accelerates this capability, enabling simultaneous measurements of 48 samples. This capability is based around a coaxial switching system for rapid scanning between multiple samples on the same sample stage, coordinated with shared environmental control. We validate the instrument by measuring dielectric response in three polymers, distributed across 48 sample sites, and comparing results to measurements via a standard BDS instrument. Results are found to be reproducible and are in agreement with relaxation times from traditional BDS. We then employ HTBDS to establish mixing rules for glass transition temperatures, kinetic fragility indices, and segmental stretching exponents in a series of acrylate copolymers, a matter of considerable technological interest in a variety of technological applications. Results are consistent with the empirical Fox rule for the glass transition temperature T_g averaging in polymer blends, while they reveal a linear mixing rule for kinetic fragility indices. Finally, we test several proposed correlations between these distinct dynamical properties. These results demonstrate that HTBDS enables measurements of polymer relaxation at a throughput approximately 10 times higher than that of standard BDS approaches, opening the door to high-throughput materials design of dynamic response across a broad range of frequencies.

Connecting 1D and 2D Confined Polymer Dynamics to Its Bulk Behavior via Density Scaling

Under confinement, the properties of polymers can be much different from the bulk. Because of the potential applications in technology and hope to reveal fundamental problems related to the glass-transition, it is important to realize whether the nanoscale and macroscopic behavior of polymer glass-formers are related to each other in any simple way. In this work, we have addressed this issue by studying the segmental dynamics of poly(4-chlorostyrene) (P4ClS) in the bulk and upon geometrical confinement at the nanoscale level, in either one- (thin films on Al substrate) or two- (within alumina nanopores) dimensions. The results demonstrate that the segmental relaxation time, irrespective of the confinement size or its dimensionality, can be scaled onto a single curve when plotted versus ρ^γ/T with the same single scaling exponent, γ = 3.1, obtained via measurements at high pressures in bulk. The implication is that the macro- and nanoscale confined polymer dynamics are intrinsically connected and governed by the same underlying rules.

Experimental Test of the Cooperative Free Volume Rate Model under 1D Confinement: The Interplay of Free Volume, Temperature, and Polymer Film Thickness in Driving Segmental Mobility

We show that the Cooperative Free Volume (CFV) rate model, successful at modeling pressure-dependent dynamics, can be employed to describe the temperature and thickness dependence of the segmental time of polymers confined in thin films (1D confinement). The CFV model is based on an activation free energy that increases with the number of cooperating segments, which is determined by the system's free volume. Here, we apply the CFV model to new experimental results on the segmental relaxation of 1D confined poly(4-chlorostyrene), P4ClS, and find remarkable agreement over the whole temperature and thickness ranges investigated. This work further validates the robustness of the CFV model, which relates the effects of confinement on dynamics to pressure changes in the bulk, and supports the idea that confinement effects originate from local perturbations in density.
