Opportunities for fundamental physics research with radioactive molecules

Molecules containing short-lived, radioactive nuclei are uniquely positioned to enable a wide range of scientific discoveries in the areas of fundamental symmetries, astrophysics, nuclear structure, and chemistry. Recent advances in the ability to create, cool, and control complex molecules down to the quantum level, along with recent and upcoming advances in radioactive species production at several facilities around the world, create a compelling opportunity to coordinate and combine these efforts to bring precision measurement and control to molecules containing extreme nuclei. In this manuscript, we review the scientific case for studying radioactive molecules, discuss recent atomic, molecular, nuclear, astrophysical, and chemical advances which provide the foundation for their study, describe the facilities where these species are and will be produced, and provide an outlook for the future of this nascent field.

Microgram BaCl2 ablation targets for trapped ion experiments

Trapped ions for quantum information processing have been an area of intense study due to the extraordinarily high fidelity operations that have been reported experimentally. Specifically, barium trapped ions have been shown to have exceptional state-preparation and measurement fidelities. The 133Ba+ (I = 1/2) isotope in particular is a promising candidate for large-scale quantum computing experiments. However, a major pitfall with this isotope is that it is radioactive and is thus generally used in microgram quantities to satisfy safety regulations. We describe a new method for creating microgram barium chloride (BaCl2) ablation targets for use in trapped ion experiments and compare our procedure to previous methods. We outline two recipes for the fabrication of ablation targets that increase the production of neutral atoms for isotope-selective loading of barium ions. We show that heat-treatment of the ablation targets greatly increases the consistency at which neutral atoms can be produced, and we characterize the uniformity of these targets using trap-independent techniques such as energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and neutral fluorescence collection. Our comparison between fabrication techniques and the demonstration of consistent neutral fluorescence paves a path toward reliable loading of 133Ba+ in surface traps and opens opportunities for scalable quantum computing with this isotope.

Compact fiber-ring resonator for blue external cavity diode laser stabilization

We demonstrate a compact and low-cost all-fiber-based locking setup for frequency-noise suppression of a 420 nm external-cavity diode laser. Frequency noise reduction in the 100 Hz to 800 kHz range is demonstrated up to 40 dB associated with a linewidth narrowing from 850 kHz to 20 kHz for 10 ms integration time. This simple locking scheme might be implemented for a large range of wavelengths and can be integrated on a small footprint for embedded applications requiring narrow linewidth blue laser diodes.

Application of a self-injection locked cyan laser for Barium ion cooling and spectroscopy

Compact, high power lasers with narrow linewidth are important tools for the manipulation of quantum systems. We demonstrate a compact, self-injection locked, Fabry-Perot semiconductor laser diode with high output power at 493 nm. A high quality factor magnesium fluoride whispering gallery mode resonator enables both high passive stability and 1 kHz instantaneous linewidth. We use this laser for laser-cooling, in-situ isotope purifcation, and probing barium atomic ions confined in a radio-frequency ion trap. The results here demonstrate the suitability of these lasers in trapped ion quantum information processing and for probing weak coherent optical transitions.

Improved Isotope-Shift-Based Bounds on Bosons beyond the Standard Model through Measurements of the ^{2}D_{3/2}-^{2}D_{5/2} Interval in Ca^{+}

We perform high-resolution spectroscopy of the 3d ^{2}D_{3/2}-3d ^{2}D_{5/2} interval in all stable even isotopes of ^{A}Ca^{+} (A=40, 42, 44, 46, and 48) with an accuracy of ∼20  Hz using direct frequency-comb Raman spectroscopy. Combining these data with isotope shift measurements of the 4s ^{2}S_{1/2}↔3d ^{2}D_{5/2} transition, we carry out a King plot analysis with unprecedented sensitivity to coupling between electrons and neutrons by bosons beyond the standard model. Furthermore, we estimate the sensitivity to such bosons from equivalent spectroscopy in Ba^{+} and Yb^{+}. Finally, the data yield isotope shifts of the 4s ^{2}S_{1/2}↔3d ^{2}D_{3/2} transition at 10 parts per billion through combination with recent data of Knollmann, Patel, and Doret [Phys. Rev. Precision Measurements of the ^{138}Ba^{+} 6s^{2}S_{1/2}-5d^{2}D_{5/2} Clock Transition

Measurement of the ^{138}Ba^{+} ^{2}S_{1/2}-^{2}D_{5/2} clock transition frequency and D_{5/2} Landé g_{J} factor are reported. The clock transition frequency ν_{Ba^{+}}=170126432449333.31±(0.39)_{stat}±(0.29)_{sys}  Hz, is obtained with accuracy limited by the frequency calibration of the maser used as a reference oscillator. The Landé g_{J} factor for the ^{2}D_{5/2} level is determined to be g_{D}=1.20036739(24), which is a 30-fold improvement on previous measurements. The g-factor measurements are corrected for an ac-magnetic field from trap-drive-induced currents in the electrodes, and data taken over a range of magnetic fields underscores the importance of accounting for this systematic.

High purity single photons entangled with an atomic qubit

Trapped atomic ions are an ideal candidate for quantum network nodes, with long-lived identical qubit memories that can be locally entangled through their Coulomb interaction and remotely entangled through photonic channels. The integrity of this photonic interface is generally reliant on the purity of single photons produced by the quantum memory. Here, we demonstrate a single-photon source for quantum networking based on a trapped ¹³⁸Ba⁺ ion with a single photon purity of g ⁽²⁾(0)=(8.1±2.3)×10^-5 without background subtraction. We further optimize the tradeoff between the photonic generation rate and the memory-photon entanglement fidelity for the case of polarization photonic qubits by tailoring the spatial mode of the collected light.

Laser Cooling of Radium Ions

The unstable radium nucleus is appealing for probing new physics due to its high mass, octupole deformation, and energy level structure. Ion traps, with long hold times and low particle numbers, are excellent for work with radioactive species, such as radium and radium-based molecular ions, where low activity, and hence low total numbers, is desirable. We address the challenges associated with the lack of stable isotopes in a tabletop experiment with a low-activity (∼10  μCi) source where we laser-cool trapped radium ions. With a laser-cooled radium ion we measured the 7p^{2}P_{1/2}^{o} state's branching fractions to the ground state, 7s^{2}S_{1/2}, and a metastable excited state, 6d^{2}D_{3/2}, to be p=0.9104(7) and 0.0896(7), respectively. With a nearby tellurium reference line we measured the 7s^{2}S_{1/2}→7p^{2}P_{1/2}^{o} transition frequency, 640.096 63(6) THz.
