Precision Measurement of the Electron's Electric Dipole Moment Using Trapped Molecular Ions

Relativistic Exact Two-Component Coupled-Cluster Study of Molecular Sensitivity Factors for Nuclear Schiff Moments

Relativistic exact two-component coupled-cluster calculations of molecular sensitivity factors for nuclear Schiff moments (NSMs) are reported. We focus on molecules containing heavy nuclei, especially octupole-deformed nuclei. Analytic relativistic coupled-cluster gradient techniques are used and serve as useful tools for identifying candidate molecules that sensitively probe for physics beyond the Standard Model in the hadronic sector. Notably, these tools enable straightforward "black-box" calculations. Two competing chemical mechanisms that contribute to the NSM are analyzed, illuminating the physics of ligand effects on NSM sensitivity factors.

Electroweak Nuclear Properties from Single Molecular Ions in a Penning Trap

We present a novel technique to probe electroweak nuclear properties by measuring parity violation (PV) in single molecular ions in a Penning trap. The trap's strong magnetic field Zeeman shifts opposite-parity rotational and hyperfine molecular states into near degeneracy. The weak interaction-induced mixing between these degenerate states can be larger than in atoms by more than 12 orders of magnitude, thereby vastly amplifying PV effects. The single molecule sensitivity would be suitable for applications to nuclei across the nuclear chart, including rare and unstable nuclei.

Opportunities for fundamental physics research with radioactive molecules

Molecules containing short-lived, radioactive nuclei are uniquely positioned to enable a wide range of scientific discoveries in the areas of fundamental symmetries, astrophysics, nuclear structure, and chemistry. Recent advances in the ability to create, cool, and control complex molecules down to the quantum level, along with recent and upcoming advances in radioactive species production at several facilities around the world, create a compelling opportunity to coordinate and combine these efforts to bring precision measurement and control to molecules containing extreme nuclei. In this manuscript, we review the scientific case for studying radioactive molecules, discuss recent atomic, molecular, nuclear, astrophysical, and chemical advances which provide the foundation for their study, describe the facilities where these species are and will be produced, and provide an outlook for the future of this nascent field.

Efficient Creation of Ultracold Ground State ^{6}Li^{40}K Polar Molecules

We report the creation of ultracold ground state ^{6}Li^{40}K polar molecules with high efficiency. Starting from weakly bound molecules, stimulated Raman adiabatic passage is adopted to coherently transfer the molecules to their singlet rovibrational ground state |X^{1}Σ^{+},v=0,J=0⟩. By employing a singlet stimulated Raman adiabatic passage pathway and low-phase-noise narrow-linewidth lasers, we observed a one-way transfer efficiency of 96(4)%. Held in an optical dipole trap, the lifetime of the ground state molecules is measured to be 5.0(3) ms. The large permanent dipole moment of LiK is confirmed by applying a dc electric field on the molecules and performing Stark shift spectroscopy of the ground state. With recent advances in the quantum control of collisions, our work paves the way for exploring quantum many-body physics with strongly interacting ^{6}Li^{40}K molecules.

Spatial and Temporal Detection of Ions Ejected from Coulomb Crystals

Coulomb crystals have proven to be powerful and versatile tools for the study of ion-molecule reactions under cold and controlled conditions. Reactions in Coulomb crystals are typically monitored through a combination of in situ fluorescence imaging of the laser-cooled ions and destructive time-of-flight mass spectrometry measurements of the ejected ions. However, neither of these techniques is able to provide direct structural information on the positions of nonfluorescing "dark" ions within the crystal. In this work, structural information is obtained using a phosphor screen and a microchannel plate detector in conjunction with a Timepix3 camera. The Timepix3 camera simultaneously records the spatial and temporal distribution of all ions that strike the phosphor screen detector following crystal ejection at a selected reaction time. A direct comparison can be made between the observed Timepix3 ion distributions and the distributions established from SIMION simulations of the ion trajectories through the apparatus and onto the detector. Quantitative agreement is found between the measured Timepix3 signal and the properties of Coulomb crystals assigned using fluorescence imaging─independently confirming that the positions and numbers of nonfluorescing ions within Coulomb crystals can be accurately determined using molecular dynamics simulations. It is anticipated that the combination of high-resolution spatial and temporal data will facilitate new measurements of the ion properties within Coulomb crystals.

Discrete symmetries tested at 10-4 precision using linear polarization of photons from positronium annihilations

Discrete symmetries play an important role in particle physics with violation of CP connected to the matter-antimatter imbalance in the Universe. We report the most precise test of P, T and CP invariance in decays of ortho-positronium, performed with methodology involving polarization of photons from these decays. Positronium, the simplest bound state of an electron and positron, is of recent interest with discrepancies reported between measured hyperfine energy structure and theory at the level of 10-4 signaling a need for better understanding of the positronium system at this level. We test discrete symmetries using photon polarizations determined via Compton scattering in the dedicated J-PET tomograph on an event-by-event basis and without the need to control the spin of the positronium with an external magnetic field, in contrast to previous experiments. Our result is consistent with QED expectations at the level of 0.0007 and one standard deviation.

Quantum-Enhanced Metrology for Molecular Symmetry Violation Using Decoherence-Free Subspaces

We propose a method to measure time-reversal symmetry violation in molecules that overcomes the standard quantum limit while leveraging decoherence-free subspaces to mitigate sensitivity to classical noise. The protocol does not require an external electric field, and the entangled states have no first-order sensitivity to static electromagnetic fields as they involve superpositions with zero average lab-frame projection of spins and dipoles. This protocol can be applied with trapped neutral or ionic species, and can be implemented using methods that have been demonstrated experimentally.

Quantum control of trapped polyatomic molecules for eEDM searches

Ultracold polyatomic molecules are promising candidates for experiments in quantum science and precision searches for physics beyond the Standard Model. A key requirement is the ability to achieve full quantum control over the internal structure of the molecules. In this work, we established coherent control of individual quantum states in calcium monohydroxide (CaOH) and demonstrated a method for searching for the electron electric dipole moment (eEDM). Optically trapped, ultracold CaOH molecules were prepared in a single quantum state, polarized in an electric field, and coherently transferred into an eEDM-sensitive state where an electron spin precession measurement was performed. To extend the coherence time, we used eEDM-sensitive states with tunable, near-zero magnetic field sensitivity. Our results establish a path for eEDM searches with trapped polyatomic molecules.

Engineering Field-Insensitive Molecular Clock Transitions for Symmetry Violation Searches

Molecules are a powerful platform to probe fundamental symmetry violations beyond the standard model, as they offer both large amplification factors and robustness against systematic errors. As experimental sensitivities improve, it is important to develop new methods to suppress sensitivity to external electromagnetic fields, as limits on the ability to control these fields are a major experimental concern. Here we show that sensitivity to both external magnetic and electric fields can be simultaneously suppressed using engineered radio frequency, microwave, or two-photon transitions that maintain large amplification of CP-violating effects. By performing a clock measurement on these transitions, CP-violating observables including the electron electric dipole moment, nuclear Schiff moment, and magnetic quadrupole moment can be measured with suppression of external field sensitivity of ≳100 generically, and even more in many cases. Furthermore, the method is compatible with traditional Ramsey measurements, offers internal co-magnetometry, and is useful for systems with large angular momentum commonly present in molecular searches for nuclear CP violation.

BASE-STEP: A transportable antiproton reservoir for fundamental interaction studies

Currently, the world's only source of low-energy antiprotons is the AD/ELENA facility located at CERN. To date, all precision measurements on single antiprotons have been conducted at this facility and provide stringent tests of fundamental interactions and their symmetries. However, magnetic field fluctuations from the facility operation limit the precision of upcoming measurements. To overcome this limitation, we have designed the transportable antiproton trap system BASE-STEP to relocate antiprotons to laboratories with a calm magnetic environment. We anticipate that the transportable antiproton trap will facilitate enhanced tests of charge, parity, and time-reversal invariance with antiprotons and provide new experimental possibilities of using transported antiprotons and other accelerator-produced exotic ions. We present here the technical design of the transportable trap system. This includes the transportable superconducting magnet, the cryogenic inlay consisting of the trap stack and detection systems, and the differential pumping section to suppress the residual gas flow into the cryogenic trap chamber.

Laser Scheme for Doppler Cooling of the Hydroxyl Cation (OH+)

We report on a cycling scheme for Doppler cooling of trapped OH+ ions using transitions between the electronic ground state X3Σ- and the first excited triplet state A3Π. We have identified relevant transitions for photon cycling and repumping, have found that coupling into other electronic states is strongly suppressed, and have calculated the number of photon scatterings required to cool OH+ to a temperature where Raman sideband cooling can take over. In contrast to the standard approach, where molecular ions are sympathetically cooled, our scheme does not require co-trapping of another species and opens the door to the creation of pure samples of cold molecular ions with potential applications in quantum information, quantum chemistry, and astrochemistry. The laser cooling scheme identified for OH+ is efficient despite the absence of near-diagonal Franck-Condon factors, suggesting that broader classes of molecules and molecular ions are amenable to laser cooling than commonly assumed.

Chiral molecule candidates for trapped ion spectroscopy by ab initio calculations: From state preparation to parity violation

Parity non-conservation (PNC) due to the weak interaction is predicted to give rise to enantiomer dependent vibrational constants in chiral molecules, but the phenomenon has so far eluded experimental observation. The enhanced sensitivity of molecules to physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM) has led to substantial advances in molecular precision spectroscopy, and these may be applied to PNC searches as well. Specifically, trapped molecular ion experiments leverage the universality of trapping charged particles to optimize the molecular ion species studied toward BSM searches, but in searches for PNC, only a few chiral molecular ion candidates have been proposed so far. Importantly, viable candidates need to be internally cold, and their internal state populations should be detectable with high quantum efficiency. To this end, we focus on molecular ions that can be created by near threshold resonant two-photon ionization and detected via state-selective photo-dissociation. Such candidates need to be stable in both charged and neutral chiral versions to be amenable to these methods. Here, we present a collection of suitable chiral molecular ion candidates we have found, including CHDBrI+ and CHCaBrI+, that fulfill these conditions according to our ab initio calculations. We find that organo-metallic species have low ionization energy as neutrals and relatively high dissociation thresholds. Finally, we compute the magnitude of the PNC values for vibrational transitions for some of these candidates. An experimental demonstration of state preparation and readout for these candidates will be an important milestone toward measuring PNC in chiral molecules for the first time.

An improved bound on the electron's electric dipole moment

The imbalance of matter and antimatter in our Universe provides compelling motivation to search for undiscovered particles that violate charge-parity symmetry. Interactions with vacuum fluctuations of the fields associated with these new particles will induce an electric dipole moment of the electron (eEDM). We present the most precise measurement yet of the eEDM using electrons confined inside molecular ions, subjected to a huge intramolecular electric field, and evolving coherently for up to 3 seconds. Our result is consistent with zero and improves on the previous best upper bound by a factor of ~2.4. Our results provide constraints on broad classes of new physics above [Formula: see text] electron volts, beyond the direct reach of the current particle colliders or those likely to be available in the coming decades.

Theoretical Investigation of Spectroscopic Properties of the Alkaline-Earth-Metal Monohydrides toward Laser Cooling and Magneto-Optical Trapping

Alkaline-earth-metal monohydrides MH (M = Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba) have long been regarded as promising candidates toward laser cooling and trapping; however, their rich internal level structures that are amenable to magneto-optical trapping have not been completely explored. Here, we first systematically evaluated Franck-Condon factors of these alkaline-earth-metal monohydrides in the A²Π_1/2 ← X²Σ⁺ transition, exploiting three respective methods (the Morse potential, the closed-form approximation, and the Rydberg-Klein-Rees method). The effective Hamiltonian matrix was introduced for MgH, CaH, SrH, and BaH individually in order to figure out their molecular hyperfine structures of X²Σ⁺, the transition wavelengths in the vacuum, and hyperfine branching ratios of A²Π_1/2(J' = 1/2,+) ← X²Σ⁺(N = 1,-), followed by possible sideband modulation proposals to address all hyperfine manifolds. Lastly, the Zeeman energy level structures and associated magnetic g factors of the ground state X²Σ⁺(N = 1,-) were also presented. Our theoretical results here not only shed more light on the molecular spectroscopy of alkaline-earth-metal monohydrides toward laser cooling and magneto-optical trapping but also can contribute to research in molecular collisions involving few-atom molecular systems, spectral analysis in astrophysics and astrochemistry, and even precision measurement of fundamental constants such as the quest for nonzero detection of electron's electric dipole moment.

Effects of an Oscillating Electric Field on and Dipole Moment Measurement of a Single Molecular Ion

We characterize and model the Stark effect due to the radio-frequency (rf) electric field experienced by a molecular ion in an rf Paul trap, a leading systematic in the uncertainty of the field-free rotational transition. The ion is deliberately displaced to sample different known rf electric fields and measure the resultant shifts in transition frequencies. With this method, we determine the permanent electric dipole moment of CaH^{+}, and find close agreement with theory. The characterization is performed by using a frequency comb which probes rotational transitions in the molecular ion. With improved coherence of the comb laser, a fractional statistical uncertainty for a transition line center of as low as 4.6×10^{-13} was achieved.

Blue-Detuned Magneto-optical Trap of Molecules

Direct laser cooling of molecules has reached a phase-space density exceeding 10^{-6} in optical traps but with rather small molecular numbers. To progress toward quantum degeneracy, a mechanism that combines sub-Doppler cooling and magneto-optical trapping would facilitate near unity transfer of ultracold molecules from the magneto-optical trap (MOT) to a conservative optical trap. Using the unique energy level structure of YO molecules, we demonstrate the first blue-detuned MOT for molecules that is optimized for both gray-molasses sub-Doppler cooling and relatively strong trapping forces. This first sub-Doppler molecular MOT provides an increase of phase-space density by 2 orders of magnitude over any previously reported molecular MOT.

Effect of Raw Material Particle Size on the Synthesis of La2Zr2O7 by the Molten Salt Method

In this study, a process based on the molten salt method was proposed to prepare La₂Zr₂O₇ for improving the kinetic conditions of synthesis. Considering that the particle size of raw materials is an important factor that may have an effect on the kinetic process of synthesis, ZrO₂ and La₂O₃ with different particle sizes are used as raw materials, and the synthesis experiment is carried out at 900-1300 °C through the combination of raw materials with different particle sizes. The results show that the particle size of ZrO₂ plays an important role in the synthesis of La₂Zr₂O₇. The "dissolution precipitation" mechanism of the synthesis process in the NaCl-KCl molten salt was confirmed by SEM image observation. Furthermore, the influence of the dissolution rate of each raw material on the synthesis reaction was studied by introducing the Noyes-Whitney equation and testing the specific surface area and solubility of each raw material, and it was confirmed that the particle size of ZrO₂ was the limiting condition of the synthesis reaction, and use of ZrO₂(Z50) with a nominal particle size of 50 nm could significantly improve the kinetic condition of the reaction, thus reducing the synthesis temperature, which can help realize the energy-saving and -efficient synthesis of pyrochlore La₂Zr₂O₇.

A fully fiber-integrated ion trap for portable quantum technologies

Trapped ions are a promising platform for the deployment of quantum technologies. However, traditional ion trap experiments tend to be bulky and environment-sensitive due to the use of free-space optics. Here we present a single-ion trap with integrated optical fibers directly embedded within the trap structure, to deliver laser light as well as to collect the ion's fluorescence. This eliminates the need for optical windows. We characterise the system's performance and measure the ion's fluorescence with signal-to-background ratios on the order of 50, which allows us to perform internal state readout measurements with a fidelity over 99% in 600 [Formula: see text]s. We test the system's resilience to thermal variations in the range between 22 and 53 [Formula: see text]C, and the system's vibration resilience at 34 Hz and 300 Hz and find no effect on its performance. The combination of compactness and robustness of our fiber-coupled trap makes it well suited for applications in, as well as outside, research laboratory environments, and in particular for highly compact portable quantum technologies, such as portable optical atomic clocks. While our system is designed for trapping ⁴⁰Ca⁺ ions the fundamental design principles can be applied to other ion species.

Towards an electrostatic storage ring for fundamental physics measurements

We describe a new table-top electrostatic storage ring concept for 30 keV polarized ions with fixed spin orientation. The device will ultimately be capable of measuring magnetic fields with a resolution of 10−20 T with sub-mHz bandwidth. With the possibility to store different kinds of ions or ionic molecules and access to prepare and probe states of the systems using lasers and SQUIDs, it can be used to search for electric dipole moments (EDMs) of electrons and nucleons, as well as axion-like particle dark matter and dark photon dark matter. Its sensitivity potential stems from several hours of storage time, comparably long spin coherence times, and the possibility to trap up to 109 particles in bunches with possibly different state preparations for differential measurements. As a dark matter experiment, it is most sensitive in the mass range of 10−10 to 10−19 eV, where it can potentially probe couplings orders of magnitude below current and proposed laboratory experiments.

Standard Model Prediction for Paramagnetic Electric Dipole Moments

Standard model CP violation associated with the phase of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix is known to give small answers for the electric dipole moment (EDM) observables. Moreover, predictions for the EDMs of neutrons and diamagnetic atoms suffer from considerable uncertainties. We point out that the CP-violating observables associated with the electron spin (paramagnetic EDMs) are dominated by the combination of the electroweak penguin diagrams and ΔI=1/2 weak transitions in the baryon sector, and are calculable within chiral perturbation theory. The predicted size of the semileptonic operator C_{S} is 7×10^{-16}, which corresponds to the equivalent electron EDM d_{e}^{eq}=1.0×10^{-35}  e cm. While still far from the current observational limits, this result is 3 orders of magnitude larger than previously believed.

Subrecoil Clock-Transition Laser Cooling Enabling Shallow Optical Lattice Clocks

Laser cooling is a key ingredient for quantum control of atomic systems in a variety of settings. In divalent atoms, two-stage Doppler cooling is typically used to bring atoms to the μK regime. Here, we implement a pulsed radial cooling scheme using the ultranarrow ^{1}S_{0}-^{3}P_{0} clock transition in ytterbium to realize subrecoil temperatures, down to tens of nK. Together with sideband cooling along the one-dimensional lattice axis, we efficiently prepare atoms in shallow lattices at an energy of 6 lattice recoils. Under these conditions key limits on lattice clock accuracy and instability are reduced, opening the door to dramatic improvements. Furthermore, tunneling shifts in the shallow lattice do not compromise clock accuracy at the 10^{-19} level.

Fine and hyperfine interactions of PbF studied by laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy

The fine and hyperfine interactions in PbF have been studied using the laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) spectroscopy method. Cold PbF molecular beam was produced by laser-ablating a Pb rod under jet-cooled conditions, followed by the reaction with SF6. The LIF excitation spectrum of the (0, 0) band in the B2Σ+– X2Π1/2 system of the 208PbF, 207PbF, and 206PbF isotopologues has been recorded with rotational, fine structure, and hyperfine-structure resolution. Transitions in the LIF spectrum were assigned and combined with the previous X2Π3/2– X2Π1/2 emission spectrum in the near-infrared region [Ziebarth et al., J. Mol. Spectrosc. 191, 108–116 (1998)] and the X2Π1/2 state pure rotational spectrum of PbF [Mawhorter et al., Phys. Rev. A 84, 022508 (2011)] in a global fit to derive the rotational, spin–orbit, spin–rotation, and hyperfine interaction parameters of the ground ( X2Π1/2) and the excited ( B2Σ+) electronic states. Molecular constants determined in the present work are compared with previously reported values. Particularly, the significance of the hyperfine parameters, A⊥ and A‖, of 207Pb is discussed.

Measurement of the Electric Dipole Moment of ^{171}Yb Atoms in an Optical Dipole Trap

The permanent electric dipole moment (EDM) of the ^{171}Yb (I=1/2) atom is measured with atoms held in an optical dipole trap. By enabling a cycling transition that is simultaneously spin-selective and spin-preserving, a quantum nondemolition measurement with a spin-detection efficiency of 50% is realized. A systematic effect due to parity mixing induced by a static E field is observed, and is suppressed by averaging between measurements with optical dipole traps in opposite directions. The coherent spin precession time is found to be much longer than 300 s. The EDM is determined to be d(^{171}Yb)=(-6.8±5.1_{stat}±1.2_{syst})×10^{-27}  e cm, leading to an upper limit of |d(^{171}Yb)|<1.5×10^{-26}  e cm (95% C.L.). These measurement techniques can be adapted to search for the EDM of ^{225}Ra.

Interaction Potential for NaCs for Ultracold Scattering and Spectroscopy

We obtain the interaction potential for NaCs by fitting to experiments on ultracold scattering and spectroscopy in optical tweezers. The central region of the potential has been accurately determined from Fourier transform spectroscopy at higher temperatures, so we focus on adjusting the long-range and short-range parts. We use coupled-channel calculations of binding energies and wave functions to understand the nature of the molecular states observed in ultracold spectroscopy and of the state that causes the Feshbach resonance used to create ultracold NaCs molecules. We elucidate the relationships between the experimental quantities and features of the interaction potential. We establish the combinations of experimental quantities that determine particular features of the potential. We find that the long-range dispersion coefficient C₆ must be increased by about 0.9% to 3256(1)E_ha₀⁶ to fit the experimental results. We use coupled-channel calculations on the final potential to predict bound-state energies and resonance positions.

A combined experimental and computational study on the transition of the calcium isopropoxide radical as a candidate for direct laser cooling

Vibronically resolved laser-induced fluorescence/dispersed fluorescence (LIF/DF) and cavity ring-down (CRD) spectra of the electronic transition of the calcium isopropoxide [CaOCH(CH₃)₂] radical have been obtained under jet-cooled conditions. An essentially constant energy separation of 68 cm^-1 has been observed for the vibrational ground levels and all fundamental vibrational levels accessed in the LIF measurement. To simulate the experimental spectra and assign the recorded vibronic bands, Franck-Condon (FC) factors and vibrational branching ratios (VBRs) are predicted from vibrational modes and their frequencies calculated using the complete-active-space self-consistent field (CASSCF) and equation-of-motion coupled-cluster singles and doubles (EOM-CCSD) methods. Combined with the calculated electronic transition energy, the computational results, especially those from the EOM-CCSD calculations, reproduced the experimental spectra with considerable accuracy. The experimental and computational results suggest that the FC matrix for the studied electronic transition is largely diagonal, but transitions from the vibrationless levels of the à state to the X̃-state levels of the CCC bending (ν₁₄ and ν₁₅), CaO stretch (ν₁₃), and CaOC asymmetric stretch (ν₉ and ν₁₁) modes also have considerable intensities. Transitions to low-frequency in-plane [ν₁₇(a')] and out-of-plane [ν₃₀(a'')] CaOC bending modes were observed in the experimental LIF/DF spectra, the latter being FC-forbidden but induced by the pseudo-Jahn-Teller (pJT) effect. Both bending modes are coupled to the CaOC asymmetric stretch mode via the Duschinsky rotation, as demonstrated in the DF spectra obtained by pumping non-origin vibronic transitions. The pJT interaction also induces transitions to the ground-state vibrational level of the ν₁₀(a') mode, which has the CaOC bending character. Our combined experimental and computational results provide critical information for future direct laser cooling of the target molecule and other alkaline earth monoalkoxide radicals.

CP Violation for the Heavens and the Earth

Electroweak baryogenesis can be driven by the top quark in a general two Higgs doublet model with extra Yukawa couplings. Higgs quartics provide the first order phase transition, while extra top Yukawa coupling ρtt can fuel the cosmic baryon asymmetry through the λtImρtt product, with flavor-changing ρtc coupling as backup. The impressive ACME 2018 bound on the electron electric dipole moment calls for an extra electron coupling ρee for exquisite cancellation among dangerous diagrams, broadening the baryogenesis solution space. The mechanism suggests that extra Yukawa couplings echo the hierarchical structure of standard Yukawa couplings. Phenomenological consequences in the Higgs search and flavor physics are discussed, with μ and τ EDM touched upon.

High resolution spectroscopic measurement of 130Te2: Reference lines near 444.4 nm for eEDM experiment using PbF molecules

Molecular tellurium (Te₂) offers a wide range of potential applications, including frequency reference. Spectroscopic results about the ¹³⁰Te₂ spectrum were previously reported, but few lines lie around the PbF transition of A (²Σ⁺) (υ' = 0) ← X₁²Π_1/2 (υ = 0) (∼444.4 nm) which is regarded as an eEDM (electron's Electric Dipole Moment) sensitive transition. Here electronic transition lines for ¹³⁰Te₂ were determined using the Saturated Absorption Spectroscopy method, where the origin of the transition band was investigated for the B₁ (³Σ_u^-)0_u⁺ (υ' = 10) ← X₁ (³Σ_g^-)0_g⁺ (υ = 5) transition. The Dunham model with high orders was utilized to assign these transition lines, while Dunham parameters of the excited state B₁ (υ' = 10) were updated to a new level. The Toptica TA-SHG Pro laser was then locked to a single absorption line using a P-I servo. Our results here not only provide the assigned atlas of Te₂ spectrum near 444.4 nm, but also contribute to a stable and sensitive spectroscopic detection of PbF molecules toward the eEDM measurement, which is significant in understanding the fundamental physics beyond the Standard Model.

Improved Indirect Limits on Muon Electric Dipole Moment

Given current discrepancy in muon g-2 and future dedicated efforts to measure muon electric dipole moment (EDM) d_{μ}, we assess the indirect constraints imposed on d_{μ} by the EDM measurements performed with heavy atoms and molecules. We notice that the dominant muon EDM effect arises via the muon-loop induced "light-by-light" CP-odd amplitude ∝BE^{3}, and in the vicinity of a large nucleus the corresponding parameter of expansion can be significant, eE_{nucl}/m_{μ}^{2}∼0.04. We compute the d_{μ}-induced Schiff moment of the ^{199}Hg nucleus, and the linear combination of d_{e} and semileptonic C_{S} operator (dominant in this case) that determine the CP-odd effects in the ThO molecule. The results, d_{μ}(^{199}Hg)<6×10^{-20}  e cm and d_{μ}(ThO)<2×10^{-20}  e cm, constitute approximately threefold and ninefold improvements over the limits on d_{μ} extracted from the Brookhaven National Laboratory muon beam experiment.

Spectroscopic characterization of the a3 state of aluminum monofluoride

Spectroscopic studies of aluminum monofluoride (AlF) have revealed its highly favorable properties for direct laser cooling. All Q lines of the strong A1Π ← X1Σ+ transition around 227 nm are rotationally closed and thereby suitable for the main cooling cycle. The same holds for the narrow, spin-forbidden a3Π ← X1Σ+ transition around 367 nm, which has a recoil limit in the µK range. We here report on the spectroscopic characterization of the lowest rotational levels in the a3Π state of AlF for v = 0–8 using a jet-cooled, pulsed molecular beam. An accidental AC Stark shift is observed on the a3Π0, v = 4 ← X1Σ+, v = 4 band. By using time-delayed ionization for state-selective detection of the molecules in the metastable a3Π state at different points along the molecular beam, the radiative lifetime of the a3Π1, v = 0, J = 1 level is experimentally determined as τ = 1.89 ± 0.15 ms. A laser/radio frequency multiple resonance ionization scheme is employed to determine the hyperfine splittings in the a3Π1, v = 5 level. The experimentally derived hyperfine parameters are compared to the outcome of quantum chemistry calculations. A spectral line with a width of 1.27 kHz is recorded between hyperfine levels in the a3Π, v = 0 state. These measurements benchmark the electronic potential of the a3Π state and yield accurate values for the photon scattering rate and for the elements of the Franck–Condon matrix of the a3Π–X1Σ+ system.

Quantum register of fermion pairs

Quantum control of motion is central for modern atomic clocks¹ and interferometers². It enables protocols to process and distribute quantum information^3,4, and allows the probing of entanglement in correlated states of matter⁵. However, the motional coherence of individual particles can be fragile to maintain, as external degrees of freedom couple strongly to the environment. Systems in nature with robust motional coherence instead often involve pairs of particles, from the electrons in helium, to atom pairs⁶, molecules⁷ and Cooper pairs. Here we demonstrate long-lived motional coherence and entanglement of pairs of fermionic atoms in an optical lattice array. The common and relative motion of each pair realize a robust qubit, protected by exchange symmetry. The energy difference between the two motional states is set by the atomic recoil energy, is dependent on only the mass and the lattice wavelength, and is insensitive to the noise of the confining potential. We observe quantum coherence beyond ten seconds. Modulation of the interactions between the atoms provides universal control of the motional qubit. The methods presented here will enable coherently programmable quantum simulators of many-fermion systems⁸, precision metrology based on atom pairs and molecules^9,10 and, by implementing further advances^11-13, digital quantum computation using fermion pairs¹⁴.

Accurate ab initio calculations of RaF electronic structure appeal to more laser-spectroscopical measurements

Recently, a breakthrough has been achieved in laser-spectroscopic studies of short-lived radioactive compounds with the first measurements of the radium monofluoride molecule (RaF) UV/vis spectra. We report results from high-accuracy ab initio calculations of the RaF electronic structure for ground and low-lying excited electronic states. Two different methods agree excellently with experimental excitation energies from the electronic ground state to the ²Π_1/2 and ²Π_3/2 states, but lead consistently and unambiguously to deviations from experimental-based adiabatic transition energy estimates for the ²Σ_1/2 excited electronic state, and show that more measurements are needed to clarify spectroscopic assignment of the ²Δ state.

Bimolecular Chemistry in the Ultracold Regime

Advances in atomic, molecular, and optical physics techniques allowed the cooling of simple molecules down to the ultracold regime ([Formula: see text]1 mK) and opened opportunities to study chemical reactions with unprecedented levels of control. This review covers recent developments in studying bimolecular chemistry at ultralow temperatures. We begin with a brief overview of methods for producing, manipulating, and detecting ultracold molecules. We then survey experimental works that exploit the controllability of ultracold molecules to probe and modify their long-range interactions. Further combining the use of physical chemistry techniques such as mass spectrometry and ion imaging significantly improved the detection of ultracold reactions and enabled explorations of their dynamics in the short range. We discuss a series of studies on the reaction KRb + KRb → K₂ + Rb₂ initiated below 1 [Formula: see text]K, including the direct observation of a long-lived complex, the demonstration of product rotational state control via conserved nuclear spins, and a test of the statistical model using the complete quantum state distribution of the products. Rovibrational structure of the ytterbium monohydroxide molecule and the P,T-violation searches

The spectrum of triatomic molecules with close rovibrational opposite parity levels is sensitive to the P,T-odd effects. This makes them a convenient platform for the experimental search of a new physics. Among the promising candidates, one may distinguish YbOH as a non-radioactive compound with a heavy atom. The energy gap between levels of opposite parity, l-doubling, is of great interest as it determines the electric field strength required for the full polarization of the molecule. Likewise, the influence of the bending and stretching modes on the sensitivities to the P,T-violation requires a thorough investigation since the measurement would be performed on the excited vibrational states. This motivates us to obtain the rovibrational nuclear wavefunctions, taking into account the anharmonicity of the potential. As a result, we get the values of E_eff and E_s for the lowest excited vibrational state and determine the l-doubling.

Deceleration and Trapping of SrF Molecules

We report on the electrostatic trapping of neutral SrF molecules. The molecules are captured from a cryogenic buffer-gas beam source into the moving traps of a 4.5-m-long traveling-wave Stark decelerator. The SrF molecules in X^{2}Σ^{+}(v=0,N=1) state are brought to rest as the velocity of the moving traps is gradually reduced from 190  m/s to zero. The molecules are held for up to 50 ms in multiple electric traps of the decelerator. The trapped packets have a volume (FWHM) of 1  mm^{3} and a velocity spread of 5(1)  m/s, which corresponds to a temperature of 60(20) mK. Our result demonstrates a factor 3 increase in the molecular mass that has been Stark decelerated and trapped. Heavy molecules (mass>100  amu) offer a highly increased sensitivity to probe physics beyond the standard model. This work significantly extends the species of neutral molecules of which slow beams can be created for collision studies, precision measurement, and trapping experiments.

High-Resolution "Magic"-Field Spectroscopy on Trapped Polyatomic Molecules

Rapid progress in cooling and trapping of molecules has enabled first experiments on high-resolution spectroscopy of trapped diatomic molecules, promising unprecedented precision. Extending this work to polyatomic molecules provides unique opportunities due to more complex geometries and additional internal degrees of freedom. Here, this is achieved by combining a homogeneous-field microstructured electric trap, rotational transitions with minimal Stark broadening at a"magic" offset electric field, and optoelectrical Sisyphus cooling of molecules to the low millikelvin temperature regime. We thereby reduce Stark broadening on the J=5←4 (K=3) transition of formaldehyde at 364 GHz to well below 1 kHz, observe Doppler-limited linewidths down to 3.8 kHz, and determine the magic-field line position with an uncertainty below 100 Hz. Our approach opens a multitude of possibilities for investigating diverse polyatomic molecule species.

Polarization Enhanced Deep Optical Dipole Trapping of Λ-Cooled Polar Molecules

We demonstrate loading of SrF molecules into an optical dipole trap (ODT) via in-trap Λ-enhanced gray molasses cooling. We find that this cooling can be optimized by a proper choice of relative ODT and cooling beam polarizations. In this optimized configuration, we observe molecules with temperatures as low as 14(1)  μK in traps with depths up to 570  μK. With optimized parameters, we transfer ∼5% of molecules from our radio-frequency magneto-optical trap into the ODT, at a density of ∼2×10^{9}  cm^{-3}, a phase space density of ∼2×10^{-7}, and with a trap lifetime of ∼1  s.

Optimizing pulsed-laser ablation production of AlCl molecules for laser cooling

Aluminum monochloride (AlCl) has been proposed as a promising candidate for laser cooling to ultracold temperatures, and recent spectroscopy results support this prediction. It is challenging to produce large numbers of AlCl molecules because it is a highly reactive open-shell molecule and must be generated in situ. Here we show that pulsed-laser ablation of stable, non-toxic mixtures of Al with alkali or alkaline earth chlorides, denoted XCl_n, can provide a robust and reliable source of cold AlCl molecules. Both the chemical identity of XCl_n and the Al : XCl_n molar ratio are varied, and the yield of AlCl is monitored using absorption spectroscopy in a cryogenic gas. For KCl, the production of Al and K atoms was also monitored. We model the AlCl production in the limits of nonequilibrium recombination dominated by first-encounter events. The non-equilibrium model is in agreement with the data and also reproduces the observed trend with different XCl_n precursors. We find that AlCl production is limited by the solid-state densities of Al and Cl atoms and the recondensation of Al atoms in the ablation plume. We suggest future directions for optimizing the production of cold AlCl molecules using laser ablation.

Sympathetic cooling of a trapped proton mediated by an LC circuit

Efficient cooling of trapped charged particles is essential to many fundamental physics experiments1,2, to high-precision metrology3,4 and to quantum technology5,6. Until now, sympathetic cooling has required close-range Coulomb interactions7,8, but there has been a sustained desire to bring laser-cooling techniques to particles in macroscopically separated traps5,9,10, extending quantum control techniques to previously inaccessible particles such as highly charged ions, molecular ions and antimatter. Here we demonstrate sympathetic cooling of a single proton using laser-cooled Be+ ions in spatially separated Penning traps. The traps are connected by a superconducting LC circuit that enables energy exchange over a distance of 9 cm. We also demonstrate the cooling of a resonant mode of a macroscopic LC circuit with laser-cooled ions and sympathetic cooling of an individually trapped proton, reaching temperatures far below the environmental temperature. Notably, as this technique uses only image-current interactions, it can be easily applied to an experiment with antiprotons1, facilitating improved precision in matter-antimatter comparisons11 and dark matter searches12,13.

Systematic study and uncertainty evaluation of P, T-odd molecular enhancement factors in BaF

A measurement of the magnitude of the electric dipole moment of the electron (eEDM) larger than that predicted by the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics is expected to have a huge impact on the search for physics beyond the SM. Polar diatomic molecules containing heavy elements experience enhanced sensitivity to parity (P) and time-reversal (T)-violating phenomena, such as the eEDM and the scalar-pseudoscalar (S-PS) interaction between the nucleons and the electrons, and are thus promising candidates for measurements. The NL-eEDM collaboration is preparing an experiment to measure the eEDM and S-PS interaction in a slow beam of cold BaF molecules [P. Aggarwal et al., Eur. Phys. J. D 72, 197 (2018)]. Accurate knowledge of the electronic structure parameters, W_d and W_s, connecting the eEDM and the S-PS interaction to the measurable energy shifts is crucial for the interpretation of these measurements. In this work, we use the finite field relativistic coupled cluster approach to calculate the W_d and W_s parameters in the ground state of the BaF molecule. Special attention was paid to providing a reliable theoretical uncertainty estimate based on investigations of the basis set, electron correlation, relativistic effects, and geometry. Our recommended values of the two parameters, including conservative uncertainty estimates, are 3.13 ±0.12×10²⁴Hzecm for W_d and 8.29 ± 0.12 kHz for W_s.

Fine and hyperfine interactions in 171YbOH and 173YbOH

The odd isotopologues of ytterbium monohydroxide, ^171,173YbOH, have been identified as promising molecules to measure parity (P) and time reversal (T) violating physics. Here, we characterize the òΠ_1/2(0,0,0)-X̃²Σ⁺(0,0,0) band near 577 nm for these odd isotopologues. Both laser-induced fluorescence excitation spectra of a supersonic molecular beam sample and absorption spectra of a cryogenic buffer-gas cooled sample were recorded. In addition, a novel spectroscopic technique based on laser-enhanced chemical reactions is demonstrated and used in absorption measurements. This technique is especially powerful for disentangling congested spectra. An effective Hamiltonian model is used to extract the fine and hyperfine parameters for the òΠ_1/2(0,0,0) and X̃²Σ⁺(0,0,0) states. A comparison of the determined X̃²Σ⁺(0,0,0) hyperfine parameters with recently predicted values [Denis et al., J. Chem. Phys. 152, 084303 (2020); K. Gaul and R. Berger, Phys. Rev. A 101, 012508 (2020); and Liu et al., J. Chem. Phys. 154,064110 (2021)] is made. The measured hyperfine parameters provide experimental confirmation of the computational methods used to compute the P,T-violating coupling constants W_d and W_M, which correlate P,T-violating physics to P,T-violating energy shifts in the molecule. The dependence of the fine and hyperfine parameters of the òΠ_1/2(0,0,0) and X̃²Σ⁺(0,0,0) states for all isotopologues of YbOH are discussed, and a comparison to isoelectronic YbF is made.

Axion-mediated electron-electron interaction in ytterbium monohydroxide molecule

The YbOH triatomic molecule can be efficiently used to measure the electron electric dipole moment, which violates time-reversal (T) and spatial parity (P) symmetries of fundamental interactions [Kozyryev and Hutzler, Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 133002 (2017)]. We study another mechanism of the T, P-violation in the YbOH molecule-the electron-electron interaction mediated by the low-mass axionlike particle. For this, we calculate the molecular constant that characterizes this interaction and use it to estimate the expected magnitude of the effect to be measured. It is shown that this molecular constant has the same order of magnitude as the corresponding molecular constant corresponding to the axion-mediated electron-nucleus interaction. According to our estimation, an experiment on YbOH will allow one to set updated laboratory constraints on the CP-violating electron-axion coupling constants.

Adaptively controlled fast production of defect-free beryllium ion crystals using pulsed laser ablation

Trapped atomic ions find wide applications ranging from precision measurement to quantum information science and quantum computing. Beryllium ions are widely used due to the light mass and convenient atomic structure of beryllium; however, conventional ion loading from thermal ovens exerts undesirable gas loads for a prolonged duration. Here, we demonstrate a method to rapidly produce pure linear chains of beryllium ions with pulsed laser ablation, serving as a starting point for large-scale quantum information processing. Our method is fast compared to thermal ovens, reduces the gas load to only 10^-12 Torr (10^-10 Pa) level, yields a short recovery time of a few seconds, and also eliminates the need for a deep ultraviolet laser for photoionization. We also study the loading dynamics, which show non-Poissonian statistics in the presence of sympathetic cooling. In addition, we apply feedback control to obtain defect-free ion chains with desirable lengths.
