Exact Time-Dependent Exchange-Correlation Potential in Electron Scattering Processes

Benchmarking Functionals for Strong-Field Light-Matter Interactions in Adiabatic Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory

In recent years, time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) has been extensively employed for highly nonlinear optics in molecules and solids, including high harmonic generation (HHG), photoemission, and more. TDDFT exhibits a relatively low numerical cost while still describing both light-matter and electron-electron interactions ab initio, making it highly appealing. However, the majority of implementations of the theory utilize the simplest possible approximations for the exchange-correlation (XC) functional-either the local density or generalized gradient approximations, which are traditionally considered to have rather poor chemical accuracy. We present the first systematic study of the XC functional effect on molecular HHG, testing various levels of theory. Our numerical results suggest justification for using simpler approximations for the XC functional, showing that hybrid and meta functionals (as well as Hartree-Fock) can, at times, lead to poor and unphysical results. The specific source of the failure in more elaborate functionals should be topic of future work, but we hypothesize that its origin might be connected to the adiabatic approximation of TDDFT.

Tunable Tesla-Scale Magnetic Attosecond Pulses through Ring-Current Gating

Coherent control over electron dynamics in atoms and molecules using high-intensity circularly polarized laser pulses gives rise to current loops, resulting in the emission of magnetic fields. We propose, and demonstrate with ab initio calculations, "current-gating" schemes to generate direct or alternating-current magnetic pulses in the infrared spectral region, with highly tunable waveform and frequency, and showing femtosecond-to-attosecond pulse duration. In optimal conditions, the magnetic pulse can be highly isolated from the driving laser and exhibits a high flux density (∼1 T at a few hundred nanometers from the source, with a pulse duration of 787 attoseconds) for application in forefront experiments of ultrafast spectroscopy. Our work paves the way toward the generation of attosecond magnetic fields to probe ultrafast magnetization, chiral responses, and spin dynamics.

Strengths and limitations of the adiabatic exact-exchange kernel for total energy calculations

We investigate the adiabatic approximation to the exact-exchange kernel for calculating correlation energies within the adiabatic-connection fluctuation-dissipation framework of time-dependent density functional theory. A numerical study is performed on a set of systems having bonds of different character (H2 and N2 molecules, H-chain, H2-dimer, solid-Ar, and the H2O-dimer). We find that the adiabatic kernel can be sufficient in strongly bound covalent systems, yielding similar bond lengths and binding energies. However, for non-covalent systems, the adiabatic kernel introduces significant errors around equilibrium geometry, systematically overestimating the interaction energy. The origin of this behavior is investigated by studying a model dimer composed of one-dimensional, closed-shell atoms, interacting via soft-Coulomb potentials. The kernel is shown to exhibit a strong frequency dependence at small to intermediate atomic separation that affects both the low-energy spectrum and the exchange-correlation hole obtained from the corresponding diagonal of the two-particle density matrix.

Electronic excited states in deep variational Monte Carlo

Obtaining accurate ground and low-lying excited states of electronic systems is crucial in a multitude of important applications. One ab initio method for solving the Schrödinger equation that scales favorably for large systems is variational quantum Monte Carlo (QMC). The recently introduced deep QMC approach uses ansatzes represented by deep neural networks and generates nearly exact ground-state solutions for molecules containing up to a few dozen electrons, with the potential to scale to much larger systems where other highly accurate methods are not feasible. In this paper, we extend one such ansatz (PauliNet) to compute electronic excited states. We demonstrate our method on various small atoms and molecules and consistently achieve high accuracy for low-lying states. To highlight the method's potential, we compute the first excited state of the much larger benzene molecule, as well as the conical intersection of ethylene, with PauliNet matching results of more expensive high-level methods.

Conditional Wave Function Theory: A Unified Treatment of Molecular Structure and Nonadiabatic Dynamics

We demonstrate that a conditional wave function theory enables a unified and efficient treatment of the equilibrium structure and nonadiabatic dynamics of correlated electron-ion systems. The conditional decomposition of the many-body wave function formally recasts the full interacting wave function of a closed system as a set of lower-dimensional (conditional) coupled "slices". We formulate a variational wave function ansatz based on a set of conditional wave function slices and demonstrate its accuracy by determining the structural and time-dependent response properties of the hydrogen molecule. We then extend this approach to include time-dependent conditional wave functions and address paradigmatic nonequilibrium processes including strong-field molecular ionization, laser-driven proton transfer, and nuclear quantum effects induced by a conical intersection. This work paves the road for the application of conditional wave function theory in equilibrium and out-of-equilibrium ab initio molecular simulations of finite and extended systems.

Direct treatment of interaction between laser-field and electrons for simulating laser processing of metals

Laser ablation is often simulated by the two-temperature model in which electrons are assumed to be thermalized by laser irradiation, while an explicit representation of interaction between laser-field and electrons is challenging but beneficial as being free from any adjustable parameters. Here, an ab initio method based on the time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) in which electron-ion dynamics under a laser field are numerically simulated is examined as a tool for simulating femtosecond laser processing of metals. Laser-induced volume expansion in surface normal directions of Cu(111) and Ni(111) surfaces are simulated by using repeating slab models. The amount of simulated volume expansion is compared between Cu(111) and Ni(111) slabs for the same laser pulse conditions, and the Ni slab is found to expand more than the Cu slab despite the smaller thermal expansion coefficient of Ni compared with Cu. The analyzed electronic excitation and lattice motion were compared to those in the two-temperature model. The threshold fluence to release surface Cu atom deduced from current TDDFT approach is found to be comparable to those of Cu ablation reported experimentally.

First-Principles Study on Electron-Induced Excitations of Atomic Layer Deposition Precursors: Inelastic Electron Wave Packet Scattering with Cobalt Tricarbonyl Nitrosyl Co(CO)3NO Using Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory

A quantitative study on inelastic electron scattering with a molecule is of significant importance for understanding the essential mechanisms of electron-induced gas-phase and surface chemical reactions in their excited electronic states. A key issue to be addressed is the quantitatively detailed inelastic electron collision processes with a realistic molecular target, associated with electron excitation that leads to potential ionization and dissociation reactions of the molecule. Using the real-time time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) modeling, we present quantitative findings on the energy transfers and internal excitations for the low energy (up to 270 eV) electron wave packet impact with the molecular target cobalt tricarbonyl nitrosyl (CTN, Co(CO)₃NO) that is used as a precursor in electron-enhanced atomic layer deposition (EE-ALD) growth of Co films. Our modeling shows the quantitative dependence of the wave packet sizes, target molecule orientations, and impact parameters on the energy transfer in this inelastic electron scattering process. It is found that the wave packet sizes have little effect on the overall profile of the internal multiple excited states, whereas different target orientations can cause significantly different internal excited states. To evaluate the quantitative prediction capability, the inelastic scattering cross-section of a hydrogen atom is calculated and compared with the experimental data, leading to a constant scaling factor over the whole energy range. The present study demonstrates the remarkable potential of TDDFT for simulating the inelastic electron scattering process, which provides critical information for future exploration of electronic excitations in a wide range of electron-induced chemical reactions in current technological applications.

Simulation of photo-electron spectrum and electron scattering by dual time propagation

A dual time propagation approach is introduced to describe electron scattering and ionization. The space is divided into two regions, a central region with a full time-dependent Hamiltonian and an outer region where the kinetic operator and the laser field dominate. The two regions are connected by a source term. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations of wave packet scattering on molecules and photoelectron spectrum due to circularly polarized laser are presented to illustrate the efficiency and applicability of the approach.

Developing new and understanding old approximations in TDDFT

When a system has evolved far from a ground-state, the adiabatic approximations commonly used in time-dependent density functional theory calculations completely fail in some applications, while giving qualitatively good predictions in others, and sometimes even quantitative predictions. It is not clearly understood why this is so, and developing practical approximations going beyond the adiabatic approximation remains a challenge. This paper explores three different lines of investigation. First, an expression for the exact time-dependent exchange-correlation potential suggests that the accuracy of an adiabatic approximation is intimately related to the deviation between the natural orbital occupation numbers of the physical system and those of the Kohn-Sham system, and we explore this on some exactly-solvable model systems. The exact expression further suggests a path to go beyond the adiabatic approximations, and in the second part we discuss a newly proposed class of memory-dependent approximations developed in this way. Finally, we derive a new expression for the exact exchange-correlation potential from a coupling-constant path integration.

Time-Dependent Multicomponent Density Functional Theory for Coupled Electron-Positron Dynamics

Electron-positron interactions have been utilized in various fields of science. Here we develop time-dependent multicomponent density functional theory to study the coupled electron-positron dynamics from first principles. We prove that there are coupled time-dependent single-particle equations that can provide the electron and positron density dynamics, and derive the formally exact expression for their effective potentials. Introducing the adiabatic local density approximation to time-dependent electron-positron correlation, we apply the theory to the dynamics of a positronic lithium hydride molecule under a laser field. We demonstrate the significance of the coupling between electronic and positronic motion by revealing the complex positron detachment mechanism and the suppression of electronic resonant excitation by the screening effect of the positron.

Exploring non-adiabatic approximations to the exchange–correlation functional of TDDFT

Decomposition of the exact time-dependent exchange–correlation potential offers a new starting point to build approximations with memory.
