Synthesis of Xenon and Iron-Nickel Intermetallic Compounds at Earth's Core Thermodynamic Conditions

Structural Phase Transition and Decomposition of XeF2 under High Pressure and Its Formation of Xe-Xe Covalent Bonds

Noble gases with inert chemical properties have rich bonding modes under high pressure. Interestingly, Xe and Xe form covalent bonds, originating from the theoretical simulation of the pressure-induced decomposition of XeF2, which has yet to be experimentally confirmed. Moreover, the structural phase transition and metallization of XeF2 under high pressure have always been controversial. Therefore, we conducted extensive experiments using a laser-heated diamond anvil cell technique to investigate the above issues of XeF2. We propose that XeF2 undergoes a structural phase transition and decomposition above 84.1 GPa after laser heating, and the decomposed product Xe2F contains Xe-Xe covalent bonds. Neither the pressure nor temperature alone could bring about these changes in XeF2. With our UV-vis absorption experiment, I4/mmm-XeF2 was metalized at 159 GPa. This work confirms the existence of Xe-Xe covalent bonds and provides insights into the controversy surrounding XeF2, enriching the research on noble gas chemistry under high pressure.

Predicted crystal structures of xenon and alkali metals under high pressures

The pressure-induced reaction between xenon (Xe) and other non-inert gas elements and the resultant crystal structures have attracted great interest. In this work, we carried out extensive simulations on the crystal structures of Xe-alkali metal (Xe-AM) systems under high pressures. Among all predicted compounds, KXe and RbXe are found to become stable at a pressure of ∼16 GPa by adopting a cubic symmetry of space group Pm3̄m. The stabilization of KXe and RbXe requires slightly lower pressure compared with that of previously reported CsXe (25 GPa), interestingly, which is in contrast to the electronegativity order of the AMs and unexpected. Our simulations also indicate that all predicted Xe compounds contain negatively charged Xe. Moreover, our in-depth analysis indicates that the occupation of AM d-orbitals plays a critical role in stabilizing these Xe-bearing compounds. These results shed light on the understanding of the reaction between Xe and AMs and the formation mechanism of the resultant crystal structures.

Theoretical methods for structural phase transitions in elemental solids at extreme conditions: statics and dynamics

In recent years, theoretical studies have moved from a traditionally supporting role to a more proactive role in the research of phase transitions at high pressures. In many cases, theoretical prediction leads the experimental exploration. This is largely owing to the rapid progress of computer power and theoretical methods, particularly the structure prediction methods tailored for high-pressure applications. This review introduces commonly used structure searching techniques based on static and dynamic approaches, their applicability in studying phase transitions at high pressure, and new developments made toward predicting complex crystalline phases. Successful landmark studies for each method are discussed, with an emphasis on elemental solids and their behaviors under high pressure. The review concludes with a perspective on outstanding challenges and opportunities in the field.

Hadean isotopic fractionation of xenon retained in deep silicates

Our understanding of atmosphere formation essentially relies on noble gases and their isotopes, with xenon (Xe) being a key tracer of the early planetary stages. A long-standing issue, however, is the origin of atmospheric depletion in Xe¹ and its light isotopes for the Earth² and Mars³. Here we report that feldspar and olivine samples confined at high pressures and high temperature with diluted Xe and krypton (Kr) in air or nitrogen are enriched in heavy Xe isotopes by +0.8 to +2.3‰ per AMU, and strongly enriched in Xe over Kr. The upper +2.3‰ per AMU value is a minimum because quantitative trapping of unreacted Xe, either in bubbles or adsorbed on the samples, is likely. In light of these results, we propose a scenario solving the missing Xe problem that involves multiple magma ocean stage events at the proto-planetary stage, combined with atmospheric loss. Each of these events results in trapping of Xe at depth and preferential retention of its heavy isotopes. In the case of the Earth, the heavy Xe fraction was later added to the secondary CI chondritic atmosphere through continental erosion and/or recycling of a Hadean felsic crust.

Materials by design at high pressures

Pressure, a fundamental thermodynamic variable, can generate two essential effects on materials. First, pressure can create new high-pressure phases via modification of the potential energy surface. Second, pressure can produce new compounds with unconventional stoichiometries via modification of the compositional landscape. These new phases or compounds often exhibit exotic physical and chemical properties that are inaccessible at ambient pressure. Recent studies have established a broad scope for developing materials with specific desired properties under high pressure. Crystal structure prediction methods and first-principles calculations can be used to design materials and thus guide subsequent synthesis plans prior to any experimental work. A key example is the recent theory-initiated discovery of the record-breaking high-temperature superhydride superconductors H3S and LaH10 with critical temperatures of 200 K and 260 K, respectively. This work summarizes and discusses recent progress in the theory-oriented discovery of new materials under high pressure, including hydrogen-rich superconductors, high-energy-density materials, inorganic electrides, and noble gas compounds. The discovery of the considered compounds involved substantial theoretical contributions. We address future challenges facing the design of materials at high pressure and provide perspectives on research directions with significant potential for future discoveries.

Noble Gases in Solid Compounds Show a Rich Display of Chemistry With Enough Pressure

In this review, we summarize the rapid progress that has been made in the study of noble gas chemistry in solid compounds under high pressure. Thanks to the recent development of first-principles crystal structure search methods, many new noble gas compounds have been predicted and some have been synthesized. Strikingly, almost all types of chemical roles and interactions are found or predicted in these high-pressure noble gas compounds, ranging from cationic and anionic noble gases to covalent bonds between noble gas atoms, and to hydrogen bond-like noble gas bonds. Besides, the recently discovered He insertion reactions reveal a unique chemical force that displays no local chemical bonding, providing evidence that research into noble gas reactions can advance the frontier of chemistry at the very basic level.

Xenon iron oxides predicted as potential Xe hosts in Earth's lower mantle

An enduring geological mystery concerns the missing xenon problem, referring to the abnormally low concentration of xenon compared to other noble gases in Earth's atmosphere. Identifying mantle minerals that can capture and stabilize xenon has been a great challenge in materials physics and xenon chemistry. Here, using an advanced crystal structure search algorithm in conjunction with first-principles calculations we find reactions of xenon with recently discovered iron peroxide FeO2, forming robust xenon-iron oxides Xe2FeO2 and XeFe3O6 with significant Xe-O bonding in a wide range of pressure-temperature conditions corresponding to vast regions in Earth's lower mantle. Calculated mass density and sound velocities validate Xe-Fe oxides as viable lower-mantle constituents. Meanwhile, Fe oxides do not react with Kr, Ar and Ne. It means that if Xe exists in the lower mantle at the same pressures as FeO2, xenon-iron oxides are predicted as potential Xe hosts in Earth's lower mantle and could provide the repository for the atmosphere's missing Xe. These findings establish robust materials basis, formation mechanism, and geological viability of these Xe-Fe oxides, which advance fundamental knowledge for understanding xenon chemistry and physics mechanisms for the possible deep-Earth Xe reservoir.

Pressure-stabilized divalent ozonide CaO3 and its impact on Earth's oxygen cycles

High pressure can drastically alter chemical bonding and produce exotic compounds that defy conventional wisdom. Especially significant are compounds pertaining to oxygen cycles inside Earth, which hold key to understanding major geological events that impact the environment essential to life on Earth. Here we report the discovery of pressure-stabilized divalent ozonide CaO3 crystal that exhibits intriguing bonding and oxidation states with profound geological implications. Our computational study identifies a crystalline phase of CaO3 by reaction of CaO and O2 at high pressure and high temperature conditions; ensuing experiments synthesize this rare compound under compression in a diamond anvil cell with laser heating. High-pressure x-ray diffraction data show that CaO3 crystal forms at 35 GPa and persists down to 20 GPa on decompression. Analysis of charge states reveals a formal oxidation state of -2 for ozone anions in CaO3. These findings unravel the ozonide chemistry at high pressure and offer insights for elucidating prominent seismic anomalies and oxygen cycles in Earth's interior. We further predict multiple reactions producing CaO3 by geologically abundant mineral precursors at various depths in Earth's mantle.

Leading Interaction Components in the Structure and Reactivity of Noble Gases Compounds

The nature, strength, range and role of the bonds in adducts of noble gas atoms with both neutral and ionic partners have been investigated by exploiting a fine-tuned integrated phenomenological–theoretical approach. The identification of the leading interaction components in the noble gases adducts and their modeling allows the encompassing of the transitions from pure noncovalent to covalent bound aggregates and to rationalize the anomalous behavior (deviations from noncovalent type interaction) pointed out in peculiar cases. Selected adducts affected by a weak chemical bond, as those promoting the formation of the intermolecular halogen bond, are also properly rationalized. The behavior of noble gas atoms excited in their long-life metastable states, showing a strongly enhanced reactivity, has been also enclosed in the present investigation.

Chemical Bond Mechanism for Helium Revealed by Electronic Excitation

Helium chemistry is notoriously very impervious. It is therefore certainly no surprise that, for example, beryllium and helium atoms, in their ground state, do not bind. Full configuration-interaction calculations show that the same turns out to be true, save for a long-range shallow attraction, for the Be⁺ + He system. However, quite astonishingly, when one electron is re-added to Be⁺ in an excited 2p_π or 3s orbital (Be ¹P or ¹S), a bound adduct with He is formed, at an interatomic separation as short as 1.5 Å. Understanding why this happens reveals an unsuspected chemical mechanism that stabilizes helium compounds at the molecular level.

Structure-Controlled Oxygen Concentration in Fe2O3 and FeO2

Solid-solid reaction, particularly in the Fe-O binary system, has been extensively studied in the past decades because of its various applications in chemistry and materials and earth sciences. The recently synthesized pyrite-FeO₂ at high pressure suggested a novel oxygen-rich stoichiometry that extends the achievable O-Fe ratio in iron oxides by 33%. Although FeO₂ was synthesized from Fe₂O₃ and O₂, the underlying solid reaction mechanism remains unclear. Herein, combining in situ X-ray diffraction experiments and first-principles calculations, we identified that two competing phase transitions starting from Fe₂O₃: (1) without O₂, perovskite-Fe₂O₃ transits to the post-perovskite structure above 50 GPa; (2) if free oxygen is present, O diffuses into the perovskite-type lattice of Fe₂O₃ leading to the pyrite-type FeO₂ phase. We found the O-O bonds in FeO₂ are formed by the insertion of oxygen into the Pv lattice via the external stress and such O-O bonding is only kinetically stable under high pressure. This may provide a general mechanism of adding extra oxygen to previous known O saturated oxides to produce unconventional stoichiometries. Our results also shed light on how O is enriched in mantle minerals under pressure.

Discovery of Cu3Pb

Materials discovery enables both realization and understanding of new, exotic, physical phenomena. An emerging approach to the discovery of novel phases is high-pressure synthesis within diamond anvil cells, thereby enabling in situ monitoring of phase formation. Now, the discovery via high-pressure synthesis of the first intermetallic compound in the Cu-Pb system, Cu₃Pb is reported. Cu₃Pb is notably the first structurally characterized mid- to late-first-row transition-metal plumbide. The structure of Cu₃Pb can be envisioned as a direct mixture of the two elemental lattices. From this new framework, we gain insight into the structure as a function of pressure and hypothesize that the high-pressure polymorph of lead is a possible prerequisite for the formation of Cu₃Pb. Crucially, electronic structure computations reveal band crossings near the Fermi level, suggesting that chemically doped Cu₃Pb could be a topologically nontrivial material.

High-Pressure Synthesis: A New Frontier in the Search for Next-Generation Intermetallic Compounds

The application of high pressure adds an additional dimension to chemical phase space, opening up an unexplored expanse bearing tremendous potential for discovery. Our continuing mission is to explore this new frontier, to seek out new intermetallic compounds and new solid-state bonding. Simple binary elemental systems, in particular those composed of pairs of elements that do not form compounds under ambient pressures, can yield novel crystalline phases under compression. Thus, high-pressure synthesis can provide access to solid-state compounds that cannot be formed with traditional thermodynamic methods. An emerging approach for the rapid exploration of composition-pressure-temperature phase space is the use of hand-held high-pressure devices known as diamond anvil cells (DACs). These devices were originally developed by geologists as a way to study minerals under conditions relevant to the earth's interior, but they possess a host of capabilities that make them ideal for high-pressure solid-state synthesis. Of particular importance, they offer the capability for in situ spectroscopic and diffraction measurements, thereby enabling continuous reaction monitoring-a powerful capability for solid-state synthesis. In this Account, we provide an overview of this approach in the context of research we have performed in the pursuit of new intermetallic compounds. We start with a discussion of pressure as a fundamental experimental variable that enables the formation of intermetallic compounds that cannot be isolated under ambient conditions. We then introduce the DAC apparatus and explain how it can be repurposed for use as a synthetic vessel with which to explore this phase space, going to extremes of pressure where no chemist has gone before. The remainder of the Account is devoted to discussions of recent experiments we have performed with this approach that have led to the discovery of novel intermetallic compounds in the Fe-Bi, Cu-Bi, and Ni-Bi systems, with a focus on the cutting-edge methods that made these experiments possible. We review the use of in situ laser heating at high pressure, which led to the discovery of FeBi₂, the first binary intermetallic compound in the Fe-Bi system. Our work in the Cu-Bi system is described in the context of in situ experiments carried out in the DAC to map its high-pressure phase space, which revealed two intermetallic phases (Cu₁₁Bi₇ and CuBi). Finally, we review the discovery of β-NiBi, a novel high-pressure phase in the Ni-Bi system. We hope that this Account will inspire the next generation of solid-state chemists to boldly explore high-pressure phase space.
