Ion Correlation Effects in Salt-Doped Block Copolymers

Structure and dynamics of dynamic covalent cross-linked PEOs and PEO/LiPF6 electrolytes: a coarse-grained simulation study

The incorporation of dynamic covalent bonds has been an attractive strategy to synthesize adaptive solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs). Here, we present molecular dynamics results concerning the relationship between ion transport and segmental dynamics for dynamic covalent cross-linked PEO-Li⁺ SPEs. To dissolve LiPF₆ into PEO, a 1/r⁴-form approximation of ion-dipole interactions is employed as the solvation potential. Its parameters are estimated with the assistance of the Bayesian optimization algorithm and validated by comparing the resulting behaviors of PEO/LiPF₆ with experimental observations. The dynamic associations of EO with Li⁺ and PF₆^- significantly reduce the segmental mobility of PEO, verifying the coupling of PEO segmental dynamics with ion transport. In order to reproduce the unique behaviors of associative covalent adaptive networks (CANs), the bond-exchange reaction is controlled by the collision probability and the user-defined activation energy (E_a ≥ 0) based on a hybrid of molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo methods. The dynamics of network topology, facilitated by the reshuffling of dynamic covalent bonds, is analyzed using graph theory. The network mesh size varies with time, which can be considered as one of the characteristics for associative CANs. The reshuffling of dynamic bonds releases the constraint from cross-linked structures, and enhances the long-range segmental mobility as well as the mobilities of Li⁺ and PF₆^-. By drawing comparisons with its conventionally cross-linked counterpart, the effect of dynamic-bond reshuffling on ion transport is studied for the dynamic covalent cross-linked PEO₁₆-LiPF₆ electrolyte in terms of self-diffusivities, cation transference number, and ionic conductivity.

Coarse-Grained Modeling of Ion-Containing Polymers

Ion-containing polymers have continued to be an important research focus for several decades due to their use as an electrolyte in energy storage and conversion devices. Elucidation of connections between the mesoscopic structure and multiscale dynamics of the ions and solvent remains incompletely understood. Coarse-grained modeling provides an efficient approach for exploring the structural and dynamical properties of these soft materials. The unique physicochemical properties of such polymers are of broad interest. In this review, we summarize the current development and understanding of the structure-property relationship of ion-containing polymers and provide insights into the design of such materials determined from coarse-grained modeling and simulations accompanying significant advances in experimental strategies. We specifically concentrate on three types of ion-containing polymers: proton exchange membranes (PEMs), anion exchange membranes (AEMs), and polymerized ionic liquids (polyILs). We posit that insight into the similarities and differences in these materials will lead to guidance in the rational design of high-performance novel materials with improved properties for various power source technologies.

Structures of cationic and anionic polyelectrolytes in aqueous solutions: the sign effect

In this study, we use molecular dynamics simulation to explore the structures of anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes in aqueous solutions. We first confirm the significantly stronger solvation effects of single anions compared to cations in water at the fixed ion radii, due to the reversal orientations of asymmetric dipolar H₂O molecules around the ions. Based on this, we demonstrate that the solvation discrepancy of cations/anions and electrostatic correlations of ionic species can synergistically cause the nontrivial structural difference between single anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes. The cationic polyelectrolyte shows an extended structure whereas the anionic polyelectrolyte exhibits a collapsed structure, and their structural differences decline with increasing the counterion size. Furthermore, we corroborate that multiple cationic polyelectrolytes or multiple anionic polyelectrolytes can exhibit largely differential molecular architectures in aqueous solutions. In the solvation dominant regime, the polyelectrolyte solutions exhibit uniform structures; whereas, in the electrostatic correlation dominant regime, the polyelectrolyte solutions exhibit heterogeneous structures, in which the likely charged chains microscopically aggregate through counterion condensations. Increasing the intrinsic chain rigidity causes polyelectrolyte extension and hence moderately weakens the inter-chain clustering. Our work highlights the various, unique structures and molecular architectures of polyelectrolytes in solutions caused by the multi-body correlations between polyelectrolytes, counterions and asymmetric dipolar solvent molecules, which provides insights into the fundamental understanding of ion-containing polymers.

Sub-3-Nanometer Domain Spacings of Ultrahigh-χ Multiblock Copolymers with Pendant Ionic Groups

We investigated the temperature-dependent phase behavior and interaction parameter of polyethylene-based multiblock copolymers with pendant ionic groups. These step-growth polymers contain short polyester blocks with a single Li⁺SO₃^- group strictly alternating with polyethylene blocks of x-carbons (PESxLi, x = 12, 18, 23). At room temperature, these polymers exhibit layered morphologies with semicrystalline polyethylene blocks. Upon heating above the melting point (∼130 °C), PES18Li shows two order-to-order transitions involving Ia3̅d gyroid and hexagonal morphologies. For PES12Li, an order-to-disorder transition accompanies the melting of the polyethylene blocks. Notably, a Flory-Huggins interaction parameter was determined from the disordered morphologies of PES12Li using mean-field theory: χ(T) = 77.4/T + 2.95 (T in Kelvin) and χ(25 °C) ≈ 3.21. This ultrahigh χ indicates that the polar ionic and nonpolar polyethylene segments are highly incompatible and affords well-ordered morphologies even when the combined length of the alternating blocks is just 18-29 backbone atoms. This combination of ultrahigh χ and short multiblocks produces sub-3-nm domain spacings that facilitate the control of block copolymer self-assembly for various fields of study, including nanopatterning.

Relationship between Ionic Conductivity, Glass Transition Temperature, and Dielectric Constant in Poly(vinyl ether) Lithium Electrolytes

We report a partial elucidation of the relationship between polymer polarity and ionic conductivity in polymer electrolyte mixtures comprising a homologous series of nine poly(vinyl ether)s (PVEs) and lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide. Recent simulation studies have suggested that low dielectric polymer hosts with glass transition temperatures far below ambient conditions are expected to have ionic conductivity limited by salt solubility and dissociation. In contrast, high dielectric hosts are expected to have the potential for high ion solubility but slow segmental dynamics due to strong polymer-polymer and polymer-ion interactions. We report results for PVEs in the low polarity regime with dielectric constants of about 1.3 to 9.0. Ionic conductivity measured for the PVE and salt mixtures ranged from about 10^-10 to 10^-3 S/cm. In agreement with the predictions from computer simulations, the ionic conductivity increased with dielectric constant and plateaued as the dielectric approached 9.0, comparable to the dielectric constant of the widely used poly(ethylene oxide).

Structure and dynamics of ions in dipolar solvents: a coarse-grained simulation study

We employ the coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulation to investigate the fundamental structural and dynamic properties of the ionic solution with and without the application of an external electric field. Our simulations, in which the solvent molecules are treated as Stockmayer fluids and the ions are modeled as spheres, can effectively account for the multi-body correlations between ion-ion, ion-dipole, and dipole-dipole interactions, which are often ignored by the mean-field theories or coarse-grained simulations based on a dielectric continuum. By focusing on the coupling between effects of ion solvation, electrostatic correlations and applied electric field, we highlight some nontrivial microscopic molecular features of the systems, such as the reorganization of the dipolar solvent, clustering of the ions, and diffusions of ions and dipolar solvent molecules. Particularly, our simulation indicates the nonmonotonic dependence of the ionic clustering and ion diffusion rates on the dipolar nature of the solvent molecules, as well as the amplification of these tendencies caused by the electric field application. This work provides insights into the fundamental understanding of physicochemical properties for ion-containing liquids and contributes to the design and development of ion-containing materials.

Weakening of Solvation-Induced Ordering by Composition Fluctuation in Salt-Doped Block Polymers

The spontaneous ordering of block polymers doped with ions is affected by both selective solvation and long-range Coulombic interaction. The mean-field treatment was recently shown to overestimate the solvation-induced ordering, requiring a large solvation radius to fit experimental phase diagrams, which may be relieved by including composition fluctuations. Treating the composition fluctuations in such systems is challenging because of the need of resolving heterogeneous dielectric profile that couples with the ordering itself. Starting from a minimal model, we develop a Landau-Brazovskiĭ expansion for the free energy of salt-doped block polymer near the ordering transition. It is found that the wavelength for typical composition fluctuations first decreases with salt doping, due to Coulombic interaction, then increases due to ionic solvation. Two mechanisms that weaken the solvation-enhanced ordering are identified: the Brazovskiĭ-type composition fluctuation that stabilizes disordered phase, and the coupling between mismatch in dispersion interaction and the dielectric permittivity through monomeric polarizability.

Ion transport in small-molecule and polymer electrolytes

Solid-state polymer electrolytes and high-concentration liquid electrolytes, such as water-in-salt electrolytes and ionic liquids, are emerging materials to replace the flammable organic electrolytes widely used in industrial lithium-ion batteries. Extensive efforts have been made to understand the ion transport mechanisms and optimize the ion transport properties. This perspective reviews the current understanding of the ion transport and polymer dynamics in liquid and polymer electrolytes, comparing the similarities and differences in the two types of electrolytes. Combining recent experimental and theoretical findings, we attempt to connect and explain ion transport mechanisms in different types of small-molecule and polymer electrolytes from a theoretical perspective, linking the macroscopic transport coefficients to the microscopic, molecular properties such as the solvation environment of the ions, salt concentration, solvent/polymer molecular weight, ion pairing, and correlated ion motion. We emphasize universal features in the ion transport and polymer dynamics by highlighting the relevant time and length scales. Several outstanding questions and anticipated developments for electrolyte design are discussed, including the negative transference number, control of ion transport through precision synthesis, and development of predictive multiscale modeling approaches.

Intrinsic Ion Transport Properties of Block Copolymer Electrolytes

Knowledge of intrinsic properties is of central importance for materials design and assessing suitability for specific applications. Self-assembling block copolymer electrolytes (BCEs) are of great interest for applications in solid-state energy storage devices. A fundamental understanding of ion transport properties, however, is hindered by the difficulty in deconvoluting extrinsic factors, such as defects, from intrinsic factors, such as the presence of interfaces between the domains. Here, we quantify the intrinsic ion transport properties of a model BCE system consisting of poly(styrene-block-ethylene oxide) (SEO) and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) salt using a generalizable strategy of depositing thin films on interdigitated electrodes and self-assembling fully connected parallel lamellar structures throughout the films. Comparison between conductivity in homopolymer poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)-LiTFSI electrolytes and the analogous conducting material in SEO over a range of salt concentrations (r, molar ratio of lithium ion to ethylene oxide repeat units) and temperatures reveals that between 20% and 50% of the PEO in SEO is inactive. Using mean-field theory calculations of the domain structure and monomer concentration profiles at domain interfaces-both of which vary substantially with salt concentration-the fraction of inactive PEO in the SEO, as derived from conductivity measurements, can be quantitatively reconciled with the fraction of PEO that is mixed with greater than a few volume percent of polystyrene. Despite the detrimental interfacial effects for ion transport in BCEs, the intrinsic conductivity of the SEO studied here (ca. 10^-3 S/cm at 90 °C, r = 0.085) is an order of magnitude higher than reported values from bulk samples of similar molecular weight SEO (ca. 10^-4 S/cm at 90 °C, r = 0.085). Overall, this work provides motivation and methods for pursuing improved BCE chemical design, interfacial engineering, and processing.

The size and affinity effect of counterions on self-assembly of charged block copolymers

The effect of counterions' size and affinity on the microphase separated morphologies of neutral-charged diblock copolymers is investigated systematically using a random phase approximation (RPA) and self-consistent field theory (SCFT). The phase diagrams as a function of χ_AB and f_A at different counterion sizes and different affinities to neutral blocks are constructed, respectively. Stability limits calculated using the RPA are in good agreement with the disorder-body-centered cubic phase boundaries from SCFT calculations. It was found that increasing the size of counterions causes the phase diagram to shift upward and leftward, which is attributed to electrostatic interactions and the intrinsic volume of counterions. The domain size of the ordered phase shows an unexpected tendency that it decreases with increasing counterions' size. The counterions' distributions in H and G phases demonstrate that it is electrostatic interaction, instead of packing frustration, that plays a leading role in such systems. For finite size counterions, with the increase in affinity between counterions and neutral blocks, the phase diagram shifts upward, indicating the improved compatibility between different blocks. Furthermore, the affinity effect between counterions and neutral blocks can be mapped into an effective Flory parameter χ_AB ^' = χ_AB + 0.27χ_BC.

Recent progress in the science of complex coacervation

Complex coacervation is an associative, liquid-liquid phase separation that can occur in solutions of oppositely-charged macromolecular species, such as proteins, polymers, and colloids. This process results in a coacervate phase, which is a dense mix of the oppositely-charged components, and a supernatant phase, which is primarily devoid of these same species. First observed almost a century ago, coacervates have since found relevance in a wide range of applications; they are used in personal care and food products, cutting edge biotechnology, and as a motif for materials design and self-assembly. There has recently been a renaissance in our understanding of this important class of material phenomena, bringing the science of coacervation to the forefront of polymer and colloid science, biophysics, and industrial materials design. In this review, we describe the emergence of a number of these new research directions, specifically in the context of polymer-polymer complex coacervates, which are inspired by a number of key physical and chemical insights and driven by a diverse range of experimental, theoretical, and computational approaches.

Field-Theoretic Study of Salt-Induced Order and Disorder in a Polarizable Diblock Copolymer

We study a salt-doped polarizable symmetric diblock copolymer using a recently developed field theory that self-consistently embeds dielectric response, ion solvation energies, and van der Waals (vdW) attractions via the incorporation of segment polarizabilities and fixed dipoles. This field theory is amenable to direct simulation via the complex Langevin sampling technique and, thus, requires no approximations beyond the phenomenology of the underlying molecular model. We measure the shift in the order-disorder transition (ODT) of a diblock copolymer with salt-loading in field-theoretic simulations and observe rich behavior in which solvation, dilution and charge screening effects compete to determine whether the ordered or disordered phase is stabilized. At low salt concentrations, the salt behaves as a selective solvent, localizing into the high-dielectric domains and stabilizing the ordered phase. At high salt concentrations, however, the salt localization vanishes due to charge screening effects, and the salt behaves as a nonselective solvent that screens vdW attractions and stabilizes the disordered phase.

Block copolymers for supercapacitors, dielectric capacitors and batteries

Block copolymer-based energy storage emerges as an active interdisciplinary research field. This topical review presents a survey of the recent advances in block copolymers for energy storage. In the first section, we introduce the background of electrochemical energy storage and block copolymer thermodynamics. In the second section, we discuss the current understandings of block copolymer chemistry, processing, pore size, and ionic conductivity. In the third section, we summarize the design principles and state-of-the-art applications of block copolymers in three energy storage devices, namely, supercapacitors, dielectric capacitors, and batteries. Lastly, we present our perspectives on future possible breakthroughs and associated challenges that are essential to propel the development of advanced block copolymers for energy storage. We expect the review to encourage innovative studies on integrating block copolymers into energy storage applications.

Nanoscale Resolution of Electric-field Induced Motion in Ionic Diblock Copolymer Thin Films

Understanding the responses of ionic block copolymers to applied electric fields is crucial when targeting applications in areas such as energy storage, microelectronics, and transducers. This work shows that the identity of counterions in ionic diblock copolymers substantially affects their responses to electric fields, demonstrating the importance of ionic species for materials design. In situ neutron reflectometry measurements revealed that thin films containing imidazolium based cationic diblock copolymers, tetrafluoroborate counteranions led to film contraction under applied electric fields, while bromide counteranions drove expansion under similar field strengths. Coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations were used to develop a fundamental understanding of these responses, uncovering a nonmonotonic trend in thickness change as a function of field strength. This behavior was attributed to elastic responses of microphase separated diblock copolymer chains resulting from variations in interfacial tension of polymer-polymer interfaces due to the redistribution of counteranions in the presence of electric fields.

High aspect ratio nanotubes assembled from macrocyclic iminium salts

One-dimensional nanostructures such as carbon nanotubes and actin filaments rely on strong and directional interactions to stabilize their high aspect ratio shapes. This requirement has precluded making isolated, long, thin organic nanotubes by stacking molecular macrocycles, as their noncovalent stacking interactions are generally too weak. Here we report high aspect ratio (>10³), lyotropic nanotubes of stacked, macrocyclic, iminium salts, which are formed by protonation of the corresponding imine-linked macrocycles. Iminium ion formation establishes cohesive interactions that, in organic solvent (tetrahydrofuran), are two orders of magnitude stronger than the neutral macrocycles, as explained by physical arguments and demonstrated by molecular dynamics simulations. Nanotube formation stabilizes the iminium ions, which otherwise rapidly hydrolyze, and is reversed and restored upon addition of bases and acids. Acids generated by irradiating a photoacid generator or sonicating chlorinated solvents also induced nanotube assembly, allowing these nanostructures to be coupled to diverse stimuli, and, once assembled, they can be fixed permanently by cross-linking their pendant alkenes. As large macrocyclic chromonic liquid crystals, these iminium salts are easily accessible through a modular design and provide a means to rationally synthesize structures that mimic the morphology and rheology of carbon nanotubes and biological tubules.
