Observation of Rydberg Blockade Induced by a Single Ion

In Situ Observation of Nonpolar to Strongly Polar Atom-Ion Collision Dynamics

The onset of collision dynamics between an ion and a Rydberg atom is studied in a regime characterized by a multitude of collision channels. These channels arise from coupling between a nonpolar Rydberg state and numerous highly polar Stark states. The interaction potentials formed by the polar Stark states show a substantial difference in spatial gradient compared to the nonpolar state leading to a separation of collisional timescales, which is observed in situ. For collision energies in the range of k_{B}μK to k_{B}K, the dynamics exhibit a counterintuitive dependence on temperature, resulting in faster collision dynamics for cold-initially "slow"-systems. Dipole selection rules enable us to prepare the collision pair on the nonpolar potential in a highly controlled manner, which determines occupation of the collision channels. The experimental observations are supported by semiclassical simulations, which model the pair state evolution and provide evidence for tunable nonadiabatic dynamics.

Trapping Ion Coulomb Crystals in an Optical Lattice

We report the optical trapping of multiple ions localized at individual lattice sites of a one-dimensional optical lattice. We observe a fivefold increased range of axial dc-electric field strength for which ions can be optically trapped with high probability and an increase of the axial eigenfrequency by 2 orders of magnitude compared to an optical dipole trap without interference but of similar intensity. Our findings motivate an alternative pathway to extend arrays of trapped ions in size and dimension, enabling quantum simulations with particles interacting at long range.

Rydberg-Rydberg interaction strengths and dipole blockade radii in the presence of Förster resonances

Achieving a substantial blockade radius is crucial for developing scalable and efficient quantum communication and computation. In this theoretical study, we present the enhancement of the Rydberg blockade radius by utilizing Förster resonance. This phenomenon occurs when the energy difference between two initial Rydberg states closely matches that between the corresponding final Rydberg states, giving rise to a resonant energy transfer process. We employ quantum defect theory to numerically calculate the 87Rb-87Rb Rydberg atomic pair, enabling us to accurately estimate the van der Waals interaction. Our investigation reveals that when the principal quantum numbers of two Rydberg states differ only slightly, the Förster transition is rarely able to achieve a large blockade radius. However, in cases where the principal quantum numbers differ significantly, we substantially improve the Rydberg blockade radius. Most notably, we identify transition channels exhibiting an extensive blockade radius, surpassing 50 μm. This significant increase in the blockade radius enables larger-scale quantum operations and advances quantum technologies, with broad implications for achieving long-range quantum entanglement and robust quantum processes.

Fast Single-Shot Imaging of Individual Ions via Homodyne Detection of Rydberg-Blockade-Induced Absorption

We introduce well-separated ^{87}Rb^{+} ions into an atomic ensemble by microwave ionization of Rydberg excitations and realize single-shot imaging of the individual ions with an exposure time of 1  μs. This imaging sensitivity is reached by using homodyne detection of ion-Rydberg-atom interaction induced absorption. We obtain an ion detection fidelity of (80±5)% from analyzing the absorption spots in acquired single-shot images. These in situ images provide a direct visualization of the ion-Rydberg interaction blockade and reveal clear spatial correlations between Rydberg excitations. The capability of imaging individual ions in a single shot is of interest for investigating collisional dynamics in hybrid ion-atom systems and for exploring ions as a probe for measurements of quantum gases.

Limitations of perturbative coupled-cluster approximations for highly accurate investigations of Rb2. J Chem Phys 2021;155:124101. [PMID: 34598557 DOI: 10.1063/5.0062098]

We reveal limitations of several standard coupled-cluster (CC) methods with perturbation-theory based noniterative or approximate iterative treatments of triple excitations when applied to the determination of highly accurate potential energy curves (PECs) of ionic dimers, such as the XΣg+2 electronic ground state of Rb₂ ⁺. Such computations are of current interest for the understanding of ion-atom interactions in the ultracold regime. We demonstrate that these CC methods lead to an unphysical long-range barrier for the Rb₂ ⁺ system. The barrier is small but spoils the long-range behavior of the PEC. The effect is also found for other X₂ ⁺ systems, such as X = Li, Na, and K. Calculations using a flexible framework for obtaining leading perturbative triples corrections derived using an analytic CC singles and doubles energy derivative formulation demonstrate that the origin of this problem lies in the use of T̂₃ amplitudes obtained from approximate CC singles, doubles, and triples amplitude equations. It is shown that the unphysical barrier is related to a symmetry instability of the underlying Hartree-Fock mean-field solution, leading to orbitals representing two +0.5-fold charged ions in the limit of separated fragments. This, in turn, leads to a wrong 1/R asymptote of the interaction potential computed by perturbation-based CC approximations. Physically meaningful perturbative corrections in the long-range tail of the PEC may instead be obtained using symmetry-broken reference determinants.

Long-Range Atom–Ion Rydberg Molecule: A Novel Molecular Binding Mechanism

We present a novel binding mechanism where a neutral Rydberg atom and an atomic ion form a molecular bound state at a large internuclear distance. The binding mechanism is based on Stark shifts and level crossings that are induced in the Rydberg atom due to the electric field of the ion. At particular internuclear distances between the Rydberg atom and the ion, potential wells occur that can hold atom–ion molecular bound states. Apart from the binding mechanism, we describe important properties of the long-range atom–ion Rydberg molecule, such as its lifetime and decay paths, its vibrational and rotational structure, and its large dipole moment. Furthermore, we discuss methods of how to produce and detect it. The unusual properties of the long-range atom–ion Rydberg molecule give rise to interesting prospects for studies of wave packet dynamics in engineered potential energy landscapes.

Ultralong-Range Rydberg Bimolecules

We predict that ultralong-range Rydberg bimolecules form in collisions between polar molecules in cold and ultracold settings. The interaction of Λ-doublet nitric oxide (NO) with long-lived Rydberg NO(nf, ng) molecules forms ultralong-range Rydberg bimolecules with GHz energies and kilo-Debye permanent electric dipole moments. The Hamiltonian includes both the anisotropic charge-molecular dipole interaction and the electron-NO scattering. The rotational constant for the Rydberg bimolecules is in the MHz range, allowing for microwave spectroscopy of rotational transitions in Rydberg bimolecules. Considerable orientation of NO dipole can be achieved. The Rydberg molecules described here hold promise for studies of a special class of long-range bimolecular interactions.

Transport of a Single Cold Ion Immersed in a Bose-Einstein Condensate

We investigate transport dynamics of a single low-energy ionic impurity in a Bose-Einstein condensate. The impurity is implanted into the condensate starting from a single Rydberg excitation, which is ionized by a sequence of fast electric field pulses aiming to minimize the ion's initial kinetic energy. Using a small electric bias field, we study the subsequent collisional dynamics of the impurity subject to an external force. The fast ion-atom collision rate, stemming from the dense degenerate host gas and the large ion-atom scattering cross section, allow us to study a regime of frequent collisions of the impurity within only tens of microseconds. Comparison of our measurements with stochastic trajectory simulations based on sequential Langevin collisions indicate diffusive transport properties of the impurity and allows us to measure its mobility. Our results open a novel path to study dynamics of charged quantum impurities in ultracold matter.

Effects of dissipation induced blockade on the dynamics of two qubits without direct interaction

We study the effects of dissipation induced blockade on the dynamics of an open quantum system having two qubits in nonequilibrium independent baths. The qubits are driven by a classical field with a temporally modulated detuning. The introduction of blockade induced via two effective baths together with the effect of the driving field enable us to observe maximal entanglement oscillation of about unity that decays with a quasi-steady entanglement state oscillating about the 1/2 limit with adjustable decay rate. When the temperature difference between two baths is not large, maximal entanglement oscillation can still be observed in the model. In addition, the adjustment of the nonequilibrium thermal baths by modulating the dissipation and the application of time-dependent detuning give rise to rich entanglement dynamics. We further demonstrate numerically the practical implementation of the proposed scheme with a universal cavity QED setting.

Dressed Ion-Pair States of an Ultralong-Range Rydberg Molecule

We predict the existence of a universal class of ultralong-range Rydberg molecular states whose vibrational spectra form trimmed Rydberg series. A dressed ion-pair model captures the physical origin of these exotic molecules, accurately predicts their properties, and reveals features of ultralong-range Rydberg molecules and heavy Rydberg states with a surprisingly small Rydberg constant. The latter is determined by the small effective charge of the dressed anion, which outweighs the contribution of the molecule's large reduced mass. This renders these molecules the only known few-body systems to have a Rydberg constant smaller than R_{∞}/2.

Electric Field Excitation Suppression in Cold Atoms

In this article, the atom excitation suppression is studied in two mechanisms. The first mechanism for excitation suppression is caused by an external DC electric field. The second mechanism is due to the energy shift caused by an electric field generated by free charges, which are created by ionizing atoms. The latter mechanism is known as the Coulomb blockade. Here, the Coulomb forces originate from ions created by ionizing atoms with a UV laser. The interaction, which causes the suppression, is treated theoretically as dipole–charge interactions. In the model, the charge is an ion, and the dipole is an atom. From measurements, we use 85Rb atoms. The valence electron and the ion core are the two poles of an electric dipole. The interaction potential energy between the ion and the atom is proportional to 1R2, and the frequency shift caused by this interaction is proportional to 1R4, where R is the distance between the ion and the dipole considered. This research is motivated by potential applications for quantum information storage, remote control, creating hot plasmas using cold atoms, as well as electronic devices.

Vibrational Quenching of Weakly Bound Cold Molecular Ions Immersed in Their Parent Gas

Hybrid ion–atom systems provide an excellent platform for studies of state-resolved quantum chemistry at low temperatures, where quantum effects may be prevalent. Here we study theoretically the process of vibrational relaxation of an initially weakly bound molecular ion due to collisions with the background gas atoms. We show that this inelastic process is governed by the universal long-range part of the interaction potential, which allows for using simplified model potentials applicable to multiple atomic species. The product distribution after the collision can be estimated by making use of the distorted wave Born approximation. We find that the inelastic collisions lead predominantly to small changes in the binding energy of the molecular ion.

Ion Imaging via Long-Range Interaction with Rydberg Atoms

We demonstrate imaging of ions in an atomic gas with ion-Rydberg-atom interaction induced absorption. This is made possible by utilizing a multiphoton electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) scheme and the extremely large electric polarizability of a Rydberg state with high orbital angular momentum. We process the acquired images to obtain the distribution of ion clouds and to spectroscopically investigate the effect of the ions on the EIT resonance. Furthermore, we show that our method can be employed to image the dynamics of ions in a time resolved way. As an example, we map out the avalanche ionization of a gas of Rydberg atoms. The minimal disruption and the flexibility offered by this imaging technique make it ideally suited for the investigation of cold hybrid ion-atom systems.

Observation of Interactions between Trapped Ions and Ultracold Rydberg Atoms

We report on the observation of interactions between ultracold Rydberg atoms and ions in a Paul trap. The rate of observed inelastic collisions, which manifest themselves as charge transfer between the Rydberg atoms and ions, exceeds that of Langevin collisions for ground state atoms by about 3 orders of magnitude. This indicates a huge increase in interaction strength. We study the effect of the vacant Paul trap's electric fields on the Rydberg excitation spectra. To quantitatively describe the exhibited shape of the ion loss spectra, we need to include the ion-induced Stark shift on the Rydberg atoms. Furthermore, we demonstrate Rydberg excitation on a dipole-forbidden transition with the aid of the electric field of a single trapped ion. Our results confirm that interactions between ultracold atoms and trapped ions can be controlled by laser coupling to Rydberg states. Adding dynamic Rydberg dressing may allow for the creation of spin-spin interactions between atoms and ions, and the elimination of collisional heating due to ionic micromotion in atom-ion mixtures.
