Optical Carrier-Wave Subcycle Structures Associated with Supercritical Collapse of Long-Wavelength Intense Pulses Propagating in Weakly Anomalously Dispersive Media

Multiharmonic Spanning Nonlinear X-wave: An Asymptotic State of Extreme Long Wave Infrared Dispersive Shock Regularization

We predict the emergence of novel X-waves emitted as a consequence of extreme dispersive shock regularization of an intense long wave few cycle pulse propagating through a weakly dispersive medium. This robust propagation-invariant solution to Maxwell's equations appears as the asymptotic state in the high harmonic conversion when the pump propagates in a strongly nonlinear weakly dispersive regime, while the weakly nonlinear conical emission is dominated by chromatic dispersion.

Nonlinear post-compression in multi-pass cells in the mid-IR region using bulk materials

We numerically investigate the regime of nonlinear pulse compression at mid-IR wavelengths in a multi-pass cell (MPC) containing a dielectric plate. This post-compression setup allows for ionization-free spectral broadening and self-compression while mitigating self-focusing effects. We find that self-compression occurs for a wide range of MPC and pulse parameters and derive scaling rules that enable its optimization. We also reveal the solitonic dynamics of the pulse propagation in the MPC and its limitations and show that spatiotemporal/spectral couplings can be mitigated for appropriately chosen parameters. In addition, we reveal the formation of spectral features akin to quasi-phase matched degenerate four-wave mixing. Finally, we present two case studies of self-compression at 3-μm and 6-μm wavelengths using pulse parameters compatible with driving high-field physics experiments. The simulations presented in this paper set a framework for future experimental work using few-cycle pulses at mid-IR wavelengths.

Nonlinear focusing of supercontinuum driven by intense mid-infrared pulses in gas-filled capillaries

Strong mid-infrared light-matter interactions have attracted extensive attention as they open up new frontiers in nonlinear optics. Here we observe through simulations a novel, to the best of our knowledge, aspect of mid-infrared pulse dynamics in a high-pressure gas-filled capillary, where a pulse with a power well below the critical power for Kerr self-focusing undergoes an astonishing increase of the peak intensity following an extremely efficient spectral broadening. This intensity enhancement is attributed to the Kerr-induced focusing of the supercontinuum. Our study provides an interesting perspective for controlling the laser intensity with possible applications in nonlinear light conversion driven by mid-infrared pulses.

Powerful terahertz waves from long-wavelength infrared laser filaments

Strong terahertz (THz) electric and magnetic transients open up new horizons in science and applications. We review the most promising way of achieving sub-cycle THz pulses with extreme field strengths. During the nonlinear propagation of two-color mid-infrared and far-infrared ultrashort laser pulses, long, and thick plasma strings are produced, where strong photocurrents result in intense THz transients. The corresponding THz electric and magnetic field strengths can potentially reach the gigavolt per centimeter and kilotesla levels, respectively. The intensities of these THz fields enable extreme nonlinear optics and relativistic physics. We offer a comprehensive review, starting from the microscopic physical processes of light-matter interactions with mid-infrared and far-infrared ultrashort laser pulses, the theoretical and numerical advances in the nonlinear propagation of these laser fields, and the most important experimental demonstrations to date.

Subcycle spatiotemporal compression of infrared pulses in χ(2) semiconductors

Using a full-field propagator model, we report on the emergence of highly localized, subcycle solitonic structures for few-cycle long-wave-infrared (LWIR) pulses propagating through optical semiconductor materials with efficient quadratic nonlinearities and broad anomalous transmission windows. We briefly discuss the theoretical basis for the observed spatiotemporal carrier-wave dynamics and compare it to simulations of a weakly perturbed pulse's propagation through two currently grown, low-loss IR semiconductor crystals.
