Unconventional Singularity in Anti-Parity-Time Symmetric Cavity Magnonics

Nonreciprocal routing of microwave photons with broad bandwidth via magnon-cavity chiral coupling

We propose a scheme for realizing nonreciprocal microwave photon routing with two cascaded magnon-cavity coupled systems, which work around the exceptional points of a parity-time (PT)-symmetric Hamiltonian. An almost perfect nonreciprocal transmission can be achieved with a broad bandwidth, where the transmission for a forward-propagating photon can be flexibly controlled with the backpropagating photon being isolated. The transmission or isolated direction can be reversed via simply controlling the magnetic field direction applied to the magnons. The isolation bandwidth is improved by almost three times in comparison with the device based on a single PT-symmetric system. Moreover, the effect of intrinsic cavity loss and added thermal noises is considered, confirming the experimental feasibility of the nonreciprocal device and potential applications in quantum information processing.

Coherent and Dissipative Coupling in a Magnetomechanical System

Hybrid elastic and spin waves hold promises for energy-efficient and versatile generation and detection of magnetic signals, with potentially long coherence times. Here we report on the combined elastic and magnetic dynamics in a one-dimensional magnetomechanical crystal composed of an array of magnetic nanostripes. Phononic and magnonic modes are impulsively excited by an optical ultrafast trigger and their decay is monitored by time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect. Complementary Brillouin light scattering measurements and micromagnetic simulations concur in a unified picture, in which the strength and degree of mixing of coherent and dissipative coupling of the quasiparticles are determined quantitatively.

Anomalous Long-Distance Coherence in Critically Driven Cavity Magnonics

Developing quantum networks necessitates coherently connecting distant systems via remote strong coupling. Here, we demonstrate long-distance coherence in cavity magnonics operating in the linear regime. By locally setting the cavity near critical coupling with traveling photons, nonlocal magnon-photon coherence is established via strong coupling over a 2-m distance. We observe two anomalies in this long-distance coherence: first, the coupling strength oscillates twice the period of conventional photon-mediated couplings; second, clear mode splitting is observed within the cavity linewidth. Both effects cannot be explained by conventional coupled-mode theory, which reveals the tip of an iceberg of photon-mediated coupling in systems under critical driving. Our Letter shows the potential of using critical phenomena for harnessing long-distance coherence in distributed systems.

Experimental Demonstration of Controllable PT and Anti-PT Coupling in a Non-Hermitian Metamaterial

Non-Hermiticity has recently emerged as a rapidly developing field due to its exotic characteristics related to open systems, where the dissipation plays a critical role. In the presence of balanced energy gain and loss with environment, the system exhibits parity-time (PT) symmetry, meanwhile as the conjugate counterpart, anti-PT symmetry can be achieved with dissipative coupling within the system. Here, we demonstrate the coherence of complex dissipative coupling can control the transition between PT and anti-PT symmetry in an electromagnetic metamaterial. Notably, the achievement of the anti-PT symmetric phase is independent of variations in dissipation. Furthermore, we observe phase transitions as the system crosses exceptional points in both anti-PT and PT symmetric metamaterial configurations, achieved by manipulating the frequency and dissipation of resonators. This work provides a promising metamaterial design for broader exploration of non-Hermitian physics and practical application with a controllable Hamiltonian.

Folding State within a Hysteresis Loop: Hidden Multistability in Nonlinear Physical Systems

Identifying hidden states in nonlinear physical systems that evade direct experimental detection is important as disturbances and noises can place the system in a hidden state with detrimental consequences. We study a cavity magnonic system whose main physics is photon and magnon Kerr effects. Sweeping a bifurcation parameter in numerical experiments (as would be done in actual experiments) leads to a hysteresis loop with two distinct stable steady states, but analytic calculation gives a third folded steady state "hidden" in the loop, which gives rise to the phenomenon of hidden multistability. We propose an experimentally feasible control method to drive the system into the folded hidden state. We demonstrate, through a ternary cavity magnonic system and a gene regulatory network, that such hidden multistability is in fact quite common. Our findings shed light on hidden dynamical states in nonlinear physical systems which are not directly observable but can present challenges and opportunities in applications.

Non-hermiticity in spintronics: oscillation death in coupled spintronic nano-oscillators through emerging exceptional points

The emergence of exceptional points (EPs) in the parameter space of a non-hermitian (2D) eigenvalue problem has long been interest in mathematical physics, however, only in the last decade entered the scope of experiments. In coupled systems, EPs give rise to unique physical phenomena, and enable the development of highly sensitive sensors. Here, we demonstrate at room temperature the emergence of EPs in coupled spintronic nanoscale oscillators and exploit the system's non-hermiticity. We observe amplitude death of self-oscillations and other complex dynamics, and develop a linearized non-hermitian model of the coupled spintronic system, which describes the main experimental features. The room temperature operation, and CMOS compatibility of our spintronic nanoscale oscillators means that they are ready to be employed in a variety of applications, such as field, current or rotation sensors, radiofrequeny and wireless devices, and in dedicated neuromorphic computing hardware. Furthermore, their unique and versatile properties, notably their large nonlinear behavior, open up unprecedented perspectives in experiments as well as in theory on the physics of exceptional points expanding to strongly nonlinear systems.

Kerr nonlinearity assisted magnetically induced transparency in cavity magnon polaritons

We investigate optical transmission in cavity magnon polaritons and discover a complex multi-window magnetically induced transparency and a bistability with magnetic and optical characteristics. With the regulation of Kerr nonlinear effects and driven fields, a complex multi-window resonant transmission with fast and slow light effects appears, which includes transparency and absorption windows. The magnetically induced transparency and absorption can be explained by the destructive and constructive interference between different excitation pathways. Moreover, we demonstrate the bistability of magnons and photons with a hysteresis loop, where magnetic and optical bistabilities can induce and control each other. Our results pave a new way, to the best of our knowledge, for implementing a room-temperature multiband quantum memory.

Level pinning of anti-PT-symmetric circuits for efficient wireless power transfer

Wireless power transfer (WPT) technology based on magnetic resonance (a basic physical phenomenon) can directly transfer energy from the source to the load without wires and other physical contacts, and has been successfully applied to implantable medical devices, electric vehicles, robotic arms and other fields. However, due to the frequency splitting of near-field coupling, the resonant WPT system has some unique limitations, such as poor transmission stability and low efficiency. Here, we propose anti-resonance with level pinning for high-performance WPT. By introducing the anti-resonance mode into the basic WPT platform, we uncover the competition between dissipative coupling and coherent coupling to achieve novel level pinning, and construct an effective anti-parity-time (anti-PT)-symmetric non-Hermitian system that is superior to previous PT-symmetric WPT schemes. On the one hand, the eigenvalue of the anti-PT-symmetric system at resonance frequency is always pure real in both strong and weak coupling regions, and can be used to overcome the transmission efficiency decrease caused by weak coupling, as brought about by, for example, a large size ratio of the transmitter to receiver, or a long transmission distance. On the other hand, due to the level pinning effect of the two kinds of coupling mechanisms, the working frequency of the system is guaranteed to be locked, so frequency tracking is not required when the position and size of the receiver change. Even if the system deviates from the matching condition, an efficient WPT can be realized, thereby demonstrating the robustness of the level pinning. The experimental results show that when the size ratio of the transmitter coil to the receiver coil is 4.29 (which is in the weak coupling region), the transfer efficiency of the anti-PT-symmetric system is nearly 4.3 (3.2) times higher than that of the PT-symmetric system when the matching conditions are satisfied (deviated). With the miniaturization and integration of devices in mind, a synthetic anti-PT-symmetric system is used to realize a robust WPT. Anti-PT-symmetric WPT technology based on the synthetic dimension not only provides a good research platform for the study of abundant non-Hermitian physics, but also provides a means of going beyond traditional near-field applications with resonance mechanisms, such as resonance imaging, wireless sensing and photonic routing.

Non-Hermitian Waveguide Cavity QED with Tunable Atomic Mirrors

Optical mirrors determine cavity properties by means of light reflection. Imperfect reflection gives rise to open cavities with photon loss. We study an open cavity made of atom-dimer mirrors with a tunable reflection spectrum. We find that the atomic cavity shows anti-PT symmetry. The anti-PT phase transition controlled by atomic couplings in mirrors indicates the emergence of two degenerate cavity supermodes. Interestingly, a threshold of mirror reflection is identified for realizing strong coherent cavity-atom coupling. This reflection threshold reveals the criterion of atomic mirrors to produce a good cavity. Moreover, cavity quantum electrodynamics with a probe atom shows mirror-tuned properties, including reflection-dependent polaritons formed by the cavity and probe atom. Our Letter presents a non-Hermitian theory of an anti-PT atomic cavity, which may have applications in quantum optics and quantum computation.

Magnon-Optic Effects with Spin-Wave Leaky Modes: Tunable Goos-Hänchen Shift and Wood's Anomaly

We demonstrate numerically how a spin wave (SW) beam obliquely incident on the edge of a thin film placed below a ferromagnetic stripe can excite leaky SWs guided along the stripe. During propagation, leaky waves emit energy back into the layer in the form of plane waves and several laterally shifted parallel SW beams. This resonance excitation, combined with interference effects of the reflected and re-emitted waves, results in the magnonic Wood's anomaly and a significant increase of the Goos-Hänchen shift magnitude. This yields a unique platform to control SW reflection and transdimensional magnonic router that can transfer SWs from a 2D platform into a 1D guided mode.

Bound chiral magnonic polariton states for ideal microwave isolation

Bound states in the continuum (BICs) present a unique solution for eliminating radiation loss. So far, most reported BICs are observed in transmission spectra, with only a few exceptions being in reflection spectra. The correlation between reflection BICs (r-BICs) and transmission BICs (t-BICs) remains unclear. Here, we report the presence of both r-BICs and t-BICs in a three-mode cavity magnonics. We develop a generalized framework of non-Hermitian scattering Hamiltonians to explain the observed bidirectional r-BICs and unidirectional t-BICs. In addition, we find the emergence of an ideal isolation point in the complex frequency plane, where the isolation direction can be switched by fine frequency detuning, thanks to chiral symmetry protection. Our results demonstrate the potential of cavity magnonics and also extend the conventional BICs theory through the application of a more generalized effective Hamiltonians theory. This work offers an alternative idea for designing functional devices in general wave optics.

Non-Hermitian control between absorption and transparency in perfect zero-reflection magnonics

Recent works in metamaterials and transformation optics have demonstrated exotic properties in a number of open systems, including perfect absorption/transmission, electromagnetically induced transparency, cloaking or invisibility, etc. Meanwhile, non-Hermitian physics framework has been developed to describe the properties of open systems, however, most works related to this focus on the eigenstate properties with less attention paid to the reflection characteristics in complex frequency plane, despite the usefulness of zero-reflection (ZR) for applications. Here we demonstrate that the indirectly coupled two-magnon system not only exhibits non-Hermitian eigenmode hybridization, but also ZR states in complex frequency plane. The observed perfect-ZR (PZR) state, i.e., ZR with pure real frequency, is manifested as infinitely narrow reflection dips (~67 dB) with infinite group delay discontinuity. This reflection singularity of PZR distinguishes from the resonant eigenstates but can be adjusted on or off resonance with the eigenstates. Accordingly, the absorption and transmission can be flexibly tuned from nearly full absorption (NFA) to nearly full transmission (NFT) regions.

Theoretical investigation of dynamics and concurrence of entangled [Formula: see text] and anti-[Formula: see text] symmetric polarized photons

Non-Hermitian systems with parity-time [Formula: see text] symmetry and anti-parity-time [Formula: see text] symmetry have exceptional points (EPs) resulting from eigenvector co-coalescence with exceptional properties. In the quantum and classical domains, higher-order EPs for [Formula: see text] symmetry and [Formula: see text]-symmetry systems have been proposed and realized. Both two-qubits [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] symmetric systems have seen an increase in recent years, especially in the dynamics of quantum entanglement. However, to our knowledge, neither theoretical nor experimental investigations have been conducted for the dynamics of two-qubits entanglement in the [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] symmetric system. We investigate the [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] dynamics for the first time. Moreover, we examine the impact of different initial Bell-state conditions on entanglement dynamics in [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text], [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] symmetric systems. Additionally, we conduct a comparative study of entanglement dynamics in the [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] symmetrical system, [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] symmetrical system, and [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] symmetrical systems in order to learn more about non-Hermitian quantum systems and their environments. Entangled qubits evolve in a [Formula: see text]-[Formula: see text] symmetric unbroken regime, the entanglement oscillates with two different oscillation frequencies, and the entanglement is well preserved for a long period of time for the case when non-Hermitian parts of both qubits are taken quite away from the exceptional points.

Coherent Microwave Emission of Gain-Driven Polaritons

By developing a gain-embedded cavity magnonics platform, we create a gain-driven polariton (GDP) that is activated by an amplified electromagnetic field. Distinct effects of gain-driven light-matter interaction, such as polariton auto-oscillations, polariton phase singularity, self-selection of a polariton bright mode, and gain-induced magnon-photon synchronization, are theoretically studied and experimentally manifested. Utilizing the gain-sustained photon coherence of the GDP, we demonstrate polariton-based coherent microwave amplification (∼40  dB) and achieve high-quality coherent microwave emission (Q>10^{9}).

Enhanced sensing of optomechanically induced nonlinearity by linewidth suppression and optical bistability in cavity-waveguide systems

We study the enhanced sensing of optomechanically induced nonlinearity (OMIN) in a cavity-waveguide coupled system. The Hamiltonian of the system is anti-PT symmetric, with the two involved cavities being dissipatively coupled via the waveguide. The anti-PT symmetry may break down when a weak waveguide-mediated coherent coupling is introduced. However, we find a strong bistable response of the cavity intensity to the OMIN near the cavity resonance, benefiting from linewidth suppression caused by the vacuum induced coherence. The joint effect of optical bistability and the linewidth suppression is inaccessible by the anti-PT symmetric system involving only dissipative coupling. Due to that, the sensitivity measured by an enhancement factor is greatly enhanced by two orders of magnitude compared to that for the anti-PT symmetric model. Moreover, the enhancement factor shows resistance to a reasonably large cavity decay and robustness to fluctuations in the cavity-waveguide detuning. Based on the integrated optomechanical cavity-waveguide systems, the scheme can be used for sensing different physical quantities related to the single-photon coupling strength and has potential applications in high-precision measurements with systems involving Kerr-type nonlinearity.

Hyperparametric Oscillation via Bound States in the Continuum

Optical hyperparametric oscillation based on the third-order nonlinearity is one of the most significant mechanisms to generate coherent electromagnetic radiation and produce quantum states of light. Advances in dispersion-engineered high-Q microresonators allow for generating signal waves far from the pump and decrease the oscillation power threshold to submilliwatt levels. However, the pump-to-signal conversion efficiency and absolute signal power are low, fundamentally limited by parasitic mode competition and attainable cavity intrinsic Q to coupling Q ratio, i.e., Q_{i}/Q_{c}. Here, we use Friedrich-Wintgen bound states in the continuum (BICs) to overcome the physical challenges in an integrated microresonator-waveguide system. As a result, on-chip coherent hyperparametric oscillation is generated in BICs with unprecedented conversion efficiency and absolute signal power. This work not only opens a path to generate high-power and efficient continuous-wave electromagnetic radiation in Kerr nonlinear media but also enhances the understanding of a microresonator-waveguide system-an elementary unit of modern photonics.

Light transfer transitions beyond higher-order exceptional points in parity-time and anti-parity-time symmetric waveguide arrays

We propose two non-Hermitian arrays consisting of N = 2l + 1 waveguides and exhibiting parity-time (P T) or anti-P T symmetry for investigating light transfer dynamics based on Nth-order exceptional points (EPs). The P T-symmetric array supports two Nth-order EPs separating an unbroken and a broken phase with real and imaginary eignvalues, respectively. Light transfer dynamics in this array exhibits radically different behaviors, i.e. a unidirectional oscillation behavior in the unbroken phase, an edge-towards localization behavior in the broken phase, and a center-towards localization behavior just at Nth-order EPs. The anti-P T-symmetric array supports also two Nth-order EPs separating an unbroken and a broken phase, which refer however to imaginary and real eigenvalues, respectively. Accordingly, light transfer dynamics in this array exhibits a center-towards localization behavior in the unbroken phase and an origin-centered oscillation behavior in the broken phase. These nontrivial light transfer behaviors and their controlled transitions are not viable for otherwise split lower-order EPs and depend on the underlying SU(2) symmetry of spin-l matrices.

Chiral mode transfer of symmetry-broken states in anti-parity-time-symmetric mechanical system

Non-Hermitian systems with parity-time (PT) symmetry reveal rich physics beyond the Hermitian regime. As the counterpart of conventional PT symmetry, anti-parity-time (APT) symmetry may lead to new insights and applications. Complementary to PT-symmetric systems, non-reciprocal and chiral mode switching for symmetry-broken modes have been reported in optics with an exceptional point dynamically encircled in the parameter space of an APT-symmetric system. However, it has remained an open question whether and how the APT-symmetry-induced chiral mode transfer could be realized in mechanical systems. This paper investigates the implementation of APT symmetry in a three-element mass–spring system. The dynamic encircling of an APT-symmetric exceptional point has been implemented using dynamic-modulation mechanisms with time-driven stiffness. It is found that the dynamic encircling of an exceptional point in an APT-symmetric system with the starting point near the symmetry-broken phase leads to chiral mode switching. These findings may provide new opportunities for unprecedented wave manipulation in mechanical systems.

Long-Time Memory and Ternary Logic Gate Using a Multistable Cavity Magnonic System

Multistability is an extraordinary nonlinear property of dynamical systems and can be explored to implement memory and switches. Here we experimentally realize the tristability in a three-mode cavity magnonic system with Kerr nonlinearity. The three stable states in the tristable region correspond to the stable solutions of the frequency shift of the cavity magnon polariton under specific driving conditions. We find that the system staying in which stable state depends on the history experienced by the system, and this state can be harnessed to store the history information. In our experiment, the memory time can reach as long as 5.11 s. Moreover, we demonstrate the ternary logic gate with good on-off characteristics using this multistable hybrid system. Our new findings pave a way towards cavity magnonics-based information storage and processing.

Optical super-resonance in a customized P T-symmetric system of hybrid interaction

We investigate the optical resonances in coupled meta-atoms with hybrid interaction pathways. One interaction pathway is the directly near-field coupling between the two meta-atoms. The other interaction pathway is via the continuum in a waveguide functioned as a common bus connecting them. We show that by properly introducing gain or loss into the meta-atoms, the hybrid optical system becomes parity-time (P T) symmetric, in which the effective coupling rate can be customized by manipulating the length of the waveguide. At the exact phase of the customized P T symmetry, the coupled meta-atoms support discrete super-resonant modes that can be observed from the transmission spectra as extremely sharp peaks. At an exception point where the eigenmodes coalesce, albeit the transmission curve is flat, a high-Q factor of the localized field in the meta-atoms can be obtained. Similarities of the super-resonance with the bound states in the continuum (BICs) are discussed. This investigation promotes our understanding about the ways in realizing high-Q optical resonance especially by manipulating the distributions of loss and gain via the concepts of P T and BICs. Many attractive applications are expected.

Enhanced Sensing of Weak Anharmonicities through Coherences in Dissipatively Coupled Anti-PT Symmetric Systems

In the last few years, the great utility of exceptional points in sensing linear perturbations has been recognized. However, physical systems are inherently anharmonic and macroscopic physics is most accurately described by nonlinear models. Considering the multitude of semiclassical and quantum effects ensuing from nonlinear interactions, the sensing of anharmonicities is a prerequisite to the primed control of these effects. Here, we propose an expedient sensing scheme relevant to dissipatively coupled anti parity-time (anti-PT) symmetric systems and customized for the fine-grained estimation of anharmonic perturbations. The sensitivity to anharmonicities is derived from the coherence between two modes induced by a common vacuum. Owing to this coherence, the linear response acquires a pole on the real axis. We demonstrate how this singularity can be exploited for the enhanced sensing of very weak anhamonicities at low pumping rates. Our results are applicable to a wide class of systems, and we specifically illustrate the remarkable sensing capabilities in the context of a weakly anharmonic yttrium iron garnet sphere interacting with a cavity via a tapered fiber waveguide. A small change in the anharmonicity leads to a substantial change in the induced spin current.

Controllable optical response and tunable sensing based on self interference in waveguide QED systems

We study the self interference effect of a resonator coupled with a bent waveguide at two separated ports. Such interference effects are shown to be similar for the cases of standing-wave and traveling-wave resonators, while in the system of two separated resonators indirectly coupled via a waveguide, the coupling forms and the related interference effects depend on which kind of resonators is chosen. Due to the self interference, controllable optical responses including tunable linewidth and frequency shift, and optical dark state can be achieved. Moreover, we consider a self-interference photon-magnon hybrid model and show phase-dependent Fano-like line shapes which have potential applications in frequency sensing. The photon-magnon hybridization can not only enhance the sensitivity and provide tunable working region, but also enables optical readout of the magnetic field strength in turn. The results in this paper provide a deeper insight into the self interference effect and its potential applications.
