Direct and Inverse Cascades in Turbulent Bose-Einstein Condensates

Transition from weak turbulence to collapse turbulence regimes in the Majda-McLaughlin-Tabak model

It is well known that wave collapses can emerge from the focusing one-dimensional (1D) Majda-McLaughlin-Tabak (MMT) model as a result of modulational instability. However, how these wave collapses affect the spectral properties and statistics of the wave field has not been adequately studied. We undertake this task by simulating the forced-dissipated 1D MMT model over a range of forcing amplitudes. Our results show that when the forcing is weak, the spectrum agrees well with the prediction by wave turbulence theory with few collapses in the field. As the forcing strength increases, we see an increase in the occurrence of collapses, together with a transition from a power-law spectrum to an exponentially decaying spectrum. Through a spectral decomposition, we find that the exponential spectrum is dominated by the wave collapse component in the nonintegrable MMT model, which is in analogy to a soliton gas in integrable turbulence.

Wave turbulence and the kinetic equation beyond leading order

We derive a scheme by which to solve the Liouville equation perturbatively in the nonlinearity, which we apply to weakly nonlinear classical field theories. Our solution is a variant of the Prigogine diagrammatic method and is based on an analogy between the Liouville equation in infinite volume and scattering in quantum mechanics, described by the Lippmann-Schwinger equation. The motivation for our work is wave turbulence: A broad class of nonlinear classical field theories are believed to have a stationary turbulent state-a far-from-equilibrium state, even at weak coupling. Our method provides an efficient way to derive properties of the weak wave turbulent state. A central object in these studies, which is a reduction of the Liouville equation, is the kinetic equation, which governs the occupation numbers of the modes. All properties of wave turbulence to date are based on the kinetic equation found at leading order in the weak nonlinearity. We explicitly obtain the kinetic equation to next-to-leading order.

Numerical Validation of the Inverse Cascade of Surface Gravity Wave Action

We report numerical simulations of surface gravity waves forced at small scale and the subsequent inverse cascade of wave action. We combine the spectral approach to simulating weakly nonlinear waves with the capabilities of modern graphics processing units to reach unprecedented scale separation between the forcing and domain scales. The resulting broad inertial range allows for an unambiguous confirmation of the theoretical prediction for the spectrum in the inverse cascade regime, both in terms of spectral index and dependence of the spectral level on the action flux.

Random matrix model of Kolmogorov-Zakharov turbulence

We introduce and study a random matrix model of Kolmogorov-Zakharov turbulence in a nonlinear purely dynamical finite-size system with many degrees of freedom. For the case of a direct cascade, the energy and norm pumping takes place at low energy scales with absorption at high energies. For a pumping strength above a certain chaos border, a global chaotic attractor appears with a stationary energy flow through a Hamiltonian inertial energy interval. In this regime, the steady-state norm distribution is described by an algebraic decay with an exponent in agreement with the Kolmogorov-Zakharov theory. Below the chaos border, the system is located in the quasi-integrable regime similar to the Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser theory and the turbulence is suppressed. For the inverse cascade, the system rapidly enters a strongly nonlinear regime where the weak turbulence description is invalid. We argue that such a dynamical turbulence is generic, showing that it is present in other lattice models with disorder and Anderson localization. We point out that such dynamical models can be realized in multimode optical fibers.

Self-similar evolution of wave turbulence in Gross-Pitaevskii system

We study the universal nonstationary evolution of wave turbulence (WT) in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). Their temporal evolution can exhibit different kinds of self-similar behavior corresponding to a large-time asymptotic of the system or to a finite-time blowup. We identify self-similar regimes in BECs by numerically simulating the forced and unforced Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) and the associated wave kinetic equation (WKE) for the direct and inverse cascades, respectively. In both the GPE and the WKE simulations for the direct cascade, we observe the first-kind self-similarity that is fully determined by energy conservation. For the inverse cascade evolution, we verify the existence of a self-similar evolution of the second kind describing self-accelerating dynamics of the spectrum leading to blowup at the zero mode (condensate) at a finite time. We believe that the universal self-similar spectra found in the present paper are as important and relevant for understanding the BEC turbulence in past and future experiments as the commonly studied stationary Kolmogorov-Zakharov (KZ) spectra.

Universal equation of state for wave turbulence in a quantum gas

Boyle's 1662 observation that the volume of a gas is, at constant temperature, inversely proportional to pressure, offered a prototypical example of how an equation of state (EoS) can succinctly capture key properties of a many-particle system. Such relationships are now cornerstones of equilibrium thermodynamics1. Extending thermodynamic concepts to far-from-equilibrium systems is of great interest in various contexts, including glasses2,3, active matter4-7 and turbulence8-11, but is in general an open problem. Here, using a homogeneous ultracold atomic Bose gas12, we experimentally construct an EoS for a turbulent cascade of matter waves13,14. Under continuous forcing at a large length scale and dissipation at a small one, the gas exhibits a non-thermal, but stationary, state, which is characterized by a power-law momentum distribution15 sustained by a scale-invariant momentum-space energy flux16. We establish the amplitude of the momentum distribution and the underlying energy flux as equilibrium-like state variables, related by an EoS that does not depend on the details of the energy injection or dissipation, or on the history of the system. Moreover, we show that the equations of state for a wide range of interaction strengths and gas densities can be empirically scaled onto each other. This results in a universal dimensionless EoS that sets benchmarks for the theory and should also be relevant for other turbulent systems.
