Novel acoustic excitations in suspensions of hard-sphere colloids

Unconventional acoustic wave propagation transitions induced by resonant scatterers in the high-density limit

Experiments on ultrasound propagation through a gel doped with resonant encapsulated microbubbles provided evidence for a discontinuous transition between wave propagation regimes at a critical excitation frequency. Such behavior is unlike that observed for soft materials doped with non-resonant air or through liquid foams, and disagrees with a simple mixture model for the effective sound speed. Here, we study the discontinuous transition by measuring the transition as a function of encapsulated microbubble volume fraction. The results show the transition always occurs in the strong-scattering limit (l/λ < 1, l and λ are the mean free path and wavelength, respectively), that at the critical frequency the effective phase velocity changes discontinuously to a constant value with increasing microbubble volume fraction, and the measured critical frequency shows a power law dependence on microbubble volume fraction. The results cannot be explained by multiple scattering theory, viscous effects, mode decoupling, or a critical density of states. It is hypothesized the transition depends upon the microbubble on-resonance effective properties, and we discuss the results within the context of percolation theory. The results shed light on the discontinuous transition's physics, and suggest soft materials can be engineered in this manner to achieve a broad range of physical properties with potential application in ultrasonic actuators and switches.

Altering Terahertz Sound Propagation in a Liquid upon Nanoparticle Immersion

One of the grand challenges of new generation Condensed Matter physicists is the development of novel devices enabling the control of sound propagation at terahertz frequency. Indeed, phonon excitations in this frequency window are the leading conveyor of heat transfer in insulators. Their manipulation is thus critical to implementing heat management based on the structural design. To explore the possibility of controlling the damping of sound waves, we used high spectral contrast Inelastic X-ray Scattering (IXS) to comparatively study terahertz acoustic damping in a dilute suspension of 50 nm nanospheres in glycerol and on pure glycerol. Bayesian inference-based modeling of measured spectra indicates that, at sufficiently large distances, the spectral contribution of collective modes in the glycerol suspension becomes barely detectable due to the enhanced damping, the weakening, and the slight softening of the dominant acoustic mode.

Controlling terahertz sound propagation: some preliminary Inelastic X-Ray Scattering result

The control of sound propagation in materials via the design of their elastic properties is an exciting task at the forefront of Condensed Matter. It becomes especially compelling at terahertz frequencies, where phonons are the primary conveyors of heat flow. Despite the increasing focus on this goal, this field of research is still in its infancy; To achieve a few advances in this field, we performed several Inelastic X-Ray Scattering (IXS) measurements on elementary systems as dilute suspensions of nanoparticles (NPs) in liquids. We found that nanoparticles can effectively impact the sound propagation of the hosting liquid. We also explored the possibility of shaping terahertz sound propagation in a liquid upon confinement on quasi-unidimensional cavities. These results are here reviewed and discussed, and future research directions are finally outlined.

The damping of terahertz acoustic modes in aqueous nanoparticle suspensions

In this work, we investigate the possibility of controlling the acoustic damping in a liquid when nanoparticles are suspended in it. To shed light on this topic, we performed Inelastic X-Ray Scattering (IXS) measurements of the terahertz collective dynamics of aqueous suspensions of nanospheres of various materials, size, and relative concentration, either charged or neutral. A Bayesian analysis of measured spectra indicates that the damping of the two acoustic modes of water increases upon nanoparticle immersion. This effect seems particularly pronounced for the longitudinal acoustic mode, which, whenever visible at all, rapidly damps off when increasing the exchanged wavevector. Results also indicate that the observed effect strongly depends on the material the immersed nanoparticles are made of.

Propagation of coherent shear waves in scattering elastic media

We measure the reflection and transmission of shear waves by slabs of random dispersions of hard, dense spheres in a viscoelastic matrix. By modeling the slab as a Fabry-Pérot interferometer, we determine the effective wave number of coherent shear waves in this scattering medium and its effective mass density. We evidence the effect of the resonant rigid-body translation and rotation of the spheres on the propagation. We validate a vectorial model of multiple scattering for volume fractions of spheres up to 10%, revealing the signature of two modes of propagation.

Onset of interfacial waves in the terahertz spectrum of a nanoparticle suspension

We used inelastic x-ray scattering to gain insight into the complex terahertz dynamics of a diluted Au-nanoparticle suspension in glycerol. We observe that, albeit sparse, Au nanoparticles leave clear signatures on the dynamic response of the system, the main one being an additional mode propagating at the nanoparticle-glycerol interface. A Bayesian inferential analysis of the line shape reveals that such a mode, at variance with conventional acoustic modes, keeps a hydrodynamiclike behavior well beyond the continuous limit and down to subnanometer distances.

The Terahertz Dynamics of an Aqueous Nanoparticle Suspension: An Inelastic X-ray Scattering Study

We used the high-resolution Inelastic X-ray Scattering beamline of the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory to measure the terahertz spectrum of pure water and a dilute aqueous suspension of 15 nm diameter spherical Au nanoparticles (Au-NPs). We observe that, despite their sparse volume concentration of about 0.5%, the immersed NPs strongly influence the collective molecular dynamics of the hosting liquid. We investigate this effect through a Bayesian inference analysis of the spectral lineshape, which elucidates how terahertz transport properties of water change upon Au-NP immersion. In particular, we observe a nearly complete disappearance of the longitudinal acoustic mode and a mildly decreased ability to support shear wave propagation.

Composite media mixing Bragg and local resonances for highly attenuating and broad bandgaps

In this article, we investigate composite media which present both a local resonance and a periodic structure. We numerically and experimentally consider the case of a very academic and simplified system that is a quasi-one dimensional split ring resonator medium. We modify its periodicity to shift the position of the Bragg bandgap relative to the local resonance one. We observe that for a well-chosen lattice constant, the local resonance frequency matches the Bragg frequency thus opening a single bandgap which is at the same time very wide and strongly attenuating. We explain this interesting phenomenon by the dispersive nature of the unit cell of the medium, using an analogy with the concept of white light cavities. Our results provide new ways to design wide and efficient bandgap materials.

Velocity and attenuation of scalar and elastic waves in random media: a spectral function approach

This paper investigates the scattering of scalar and elastic waves in two-phase materials and single-mineral-cubic, hexagonal, orthorhombic-polycrystalline aggregates with randomly oriented grains. Based on the Dyson equation for the mean field, explicit expressions for the imaginary part of Green's function in the frequency-wavenumber domain (ω, p), also known as the spectral function, are derived. This approach allows the identification of propagating modes with their relative contribution, and the computation of both attenuation and phase velocity for each mode. The results should be valid from the Rayleigh (low-frequency) to the geometrical optics (high-frequency) regime. Comparisons with other approaches are presented for both scalar and elastic waves.

Simultaneous occurrence of structure-directed and particle-resonance-induced phononic gaps in colloidal films

We report on the observation of two hypersonic phononic gaps of different nature in three-dimensional colloidal films of nanospheres using Brillouin light scattering. One is a Bragg gap occurring at the edge of the first Brillouin zone along a high-symmetry crystal direction. The other is a hybridization gap in crystalline and amorphous films, originating from the interaction of the band of quadrupole particle eigenmodes with the acoustic effective-medium band, and its frequency position compares well with the computed lowest eigenfrequency. Structural disorder eliminates the Bragg gap, while the hybridization gap is robust.

Wigner distribution of a transducer beam pattern within a multiple scattering formalism for heterogeneous solids

Diffuse ultrasonic backscatter measurements have been especially useful for extracting microstructural information and for detecting flaws in materials. Accurate interpretation of experimental data requires robust scattering models. Quantitative ultrasonic scattering models include components of transducer beam patterns as well as microstructural scattering information. Here, the Wigner distribution is used in conjunction with the stochastic wave equation to model this scattering problem. The Wigner distribution represents a distribution in space and time of spectral energy density as a function of wave vector and frequency. The scattered response is derived within the context of the Wigner distribution of the beam pattern of a Gaussian transducer. The source and receiver distributions are included in the analysis in a rigorous fashion. The resulting scattered response is then simplified in the single-scattering limit typical of many diffuse backscatter experiments. Such experiments, usually done using a modified pulse-echo technique, utilize the variance of the signals in space as the primary measure of microstructure. The derivation presented forms a rigorous foundation for the multiple scattering process associated with ultrasonic experiments in heterogeneous media. These results are anticipated to be relevant to ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation of polycrystalline and other heterogeneous solids.

Elastic properties of viruses

Viruses are compact biological nanoparticles whose elastic and dynamical properties are hardly known. Inelastic (Brillouin) light scattering was used to characterize these properties, from microcrystals of the Satellite Tobacco Mosaic Virus, a nearly spherical plant virus of 17-nm diameter. Longitudinal sound velocities in wet and dry Satellite Tobacco Mosaic Virus crystals were determined and compared to that of the well-known protein crystal, lysozyme. Localized vibrational modes of the viral particles (i.e., particle modes) were sought in the relevant frequency ranges, as derived assuming the viruses as full free nanospheres. Despite very favorable conditions, regarding virus concentration and expected low damping in dry microcrystals, no firm evidence of virus particle modes could be detected.

Hypersonic acoustic excitations in binary colloidal crystals: big versus small hard sphere control

The phononic band structure of two binary colloidal crystals, at hypersonic frequencies, is studied by means of Brillouin light scattering and analyzed in conjunction with corresponding dispersion diagrams of the single colloidal crystals of the constituent particles. Besides the acoustic band of the average medium, the authors' results show the existence of narrow bands originating from resonant multipole modes of the individual particles as well as Bragg-type modes due to the (short-range) periodicity. Strong interaction, leading to the occurrence of hybridization gaps, is observed between the acoustic band and the band of quadrupole modes of the particles that occupy the largest fractional volume of the mixed crystal; the effective radius is either that of the large (in the symmetric NaCl-type crystalline phase) or the small (in the asymmetric NaZn(13)-type crystalline phase) particles. The possibility to reveal a universal behavior of the phononic band structure for different single and binary colloidal crystalline suspensions, by representing in the dispersion diagrams reduced quantities using an appropriate length scale, is discussed.

Acoustic quasimodes in two-dimensional dispersed random media

Using the generalized coherent-potential-approximation approach, we present the dispersion relation of the two-dimensional dispersed random media. In the intermediate-frequency regime, two acoustic modes are found in colloidal suspensions including cylindrical plastic rod in water background. The scattering cross section offers a good explanation for the two modes and the observed frequency gaps in the excitation spectra.

The spectrum of vibration modes in soft opals

Numerous vibrational modes of spherical submicrometer particles in fabricated soft opals are experimentally detected by Brillouin light scattering and theoretically identified by their spherical harmonics by means of single-phonon scattering-cross-section calculations. The particle size polydispersity is reflected in the line shape of the low-frequency modes, whereas lattice vibrations are probably responsible for the observed overdamped transverse mode.

Effective elastic parameters of the two-dimensional phononic crystal

The effective acoustic velocity along two highly symmetric directions of the first Brillouin zone is studied in a two-dimensional squarely arranged solid-solid phononic crystal. The relationship between the effective elastic velocity and the wave frequency of the two lowest bands is presented, which gives the same results as those obtained directly from the band structure. Numerical calculations show that the effective acoustic velocity of the phononic crystal decreases with frequency increasing from zero to the band edge.

Phonons in suspensions of hard sphere colloids: Volume fraction dependence

The propagation of sound waves in suspensions of hard sphere colloids is studied as a function of their volume fraction up to random close packing using Brillouin light scattering. The rich experimental phonon spectra of up to five phonon modes are successfully described by theoretical calculations based on the multiple scattering method. Two main types of phonon modes are revealed: Type A modes are acoustic excitations which set up deformations in both the solid (particles) and the liquid (solvent) phases; for type B modes the stress and strain are predominantly localized near the interface between the solid particles and the surrounding liquid (interface waves). While the former become harder (increase their effective sound velocity) as the particle volume fraction increases the latter become softer (the corresponding sound velocity decreases).

Acoustic excitations in suspensions of soft colloids

Vibrational modes in suspensions of soft colloids in a fluid can be detected experimentally by Brillouin light scattering. Besides the usual acoustic mode, being essentially the longitudinal phonon of the liquid matrix, an "opticlike" mode is observed in giant starlike micelles at low volume fractions. We propose that this opticlike mode is due mainly to the internal vibration of each hairy particle.

Air bubbles in water: a strongly multiple scattering medium for acoustic waves

Using a newly developed multiple scattering scheme, we calculate band structure and transmission properties for acoustic waves propagating in bubbly water. We prove that the multiple scattering effects are responsible for the creation of wide gaps in the transmission even in the presence of strong positional and size disorder.
