Nonlinear island growth dynamics in adsorbate-induced restructuring of quasihexagonal reconstructed Pt{100} by CO

Infrared spectroscopy data- and physics-driven machine learning for characterizing surface microstructure of complex materials

There is a need to characterize complex materials and their dynamics under reaction conditions to accelerate materials design. Adsorbate vibrational excitations are selective to adsorbate/surface interactions and infrared (IR) spectra associated with activating adsorbate vibrational modes are accurate, capture details of most modes, and can be obtained operando. Current interpretation depends on heuristic peak assignments for simple spectra, precluding the possibility of obtaining detailed structural information. Here, we combine data-based approaches with chemistry-dependent problem formulation to develop physics-driven surrogate models that generate synthetic IR spectra from first-principles calculations. Using synthetic IR spectra of carbon monoxide on platinum, we implement multinomial regression via neural network ensembles to learn probability distributions functions (pdfs) that describe adsorption sites and quantify uncertainty. We use these pdfs to infer detailed surface microstructure from experimental spectra and extend this methodology to other systems as a first step towards characterizing complex interfaces and closing the materials gap.

CO Oxidation over a Pt(100) Surface in a Ternary Gas Mixture of CO, NO, and Oxygen

Catalytic CO oxidation in a ternary gas mixture of CO, NO and O2 has been studied in the 10–5–10–4 mbar range using a Pt(100) sample as catalyst. Measurements of the reactive sticking coefficients of CO and NO are used to decompose the overall CO oxidation rate into the contributions from oxidation by NO and from oxidation by O2. The experiments are complemented by simulations with a realistic 7-variable model. The surface phase transition hex ↔ 1×1 and the inhibition of NO dissociation and O2 adsorption at high adsorbate coverages lead to significant hysteresis effects.

CO-activator model for reconstructing Pt(100) surfaces: local microstructures and chemical turbulence

We present the results of the modeling of CO adsorption and catalytic CO oxidation on inhomogeneous Pt(100) surfaces which contain structurally different areas. These areas are formed during the CO-induced transition from a reconstructed phase with hexagonal geometry of the overlayer to a bulklike (1 x 1) phase with square atomic arrangement. In the present approach, the surface transition is explained in terms of nonequilibrium bistable behavior. The bistable region is characterized by a coexistence of the hexagonal and (1 x 1) phases and is terminated in a critical bifurcation point which is located at (T(c) approximately 680 K, p(CO)(c) approximately 10 Torr). Due to increasing fluctuations, the behavior at high temperatures and pressures in the vicinity of this cusp point should be qualitatively different from the hysteresis-type behavior which is typically observed in the experiments under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. On the inhomogeneous surface, we find a regime of nonuniform oscillations characterized by random standing waves of adsorbate concentrations. The resulting spatial deformations of wave fronts allow us to gain deeper insight into the nature of irregular oscillations on Pt(100) surface.

Theoretical study of pattern formation during the catalytic oxidation of CO on Pt{100} at low pressures

Theoretical studies have thus far been unable to model pattern formation during the reaction in this system on physically feasible length and time scales. In this paper, we derive a computational reaction-diffusion model for this system in which most of the input parameters have been determined experimentally. We model the surface on a mesoscopic scale intermediate between the microscopic size of CO islands and the macroscopic length scale of pattern formation. In agreement with experimental investigations [M. Eiswirth et al., Z. Phys. Chem., Neue Folge 144, 59 (1985)], the results from our model divide the CO and O(2) partial pressure parameter space into three regions defined by the level of CO coverage or the presence of sustained oscillations. We see CO fronts moving into oxygen-covered regions, with the 1 x 1 to hex phase change occurring at the leading edge. There are also traveling waves consisting of successive oxygen and CO fronts that move into areas of relatively high CO coverage, and in this case, the phase change is more gradual and of lower amplitude. The propagation speed of these reaction waves is similar to those observed experimentally for CO and oxygen fronts [H. H. Rotermund et al., J. Chem. Phys. 91, 4942 (1989); H. H. Rotermund et al., Nature (London) 343, 355 (1990); J. Lauterbach and H. H. Rotermund, Surf. Sci. 311, 231 (1994)]. In the two-dimensional version of our model, the traveling waves take the form of target patterns emitted from surface inhomogeneities.

Lifting of Ir{100} reconstruction by CO adsorption: An ab initio study

The adsorption of CO on unreconstructed and reconstructed Ir{100} has been studied, using a combination of density functional theory and thermodynamics, to determine the relative stability of the two phases as a function of CO coverage, temperature, and pressure. We obtain good agreement with experimental data. At zero temperature, the (5 x 1) reconstruction becomes less stable than the unreconstructed (1 x 1) surface when the CO coverage exceeds a critical value of 0.09 ML. The interaction between CO molecules is found to be weakly repulsive on the reconstructed surface but attractive on the unreconstructed, explaining the experimental observation of high CO coverage on growing (1 x 1) islands. At all temperatures and pressures, we find only two possible stable states: 0.5 ML CO c(2 x 2) overlayer on the (1 x 1) substrate and the clean (5 x 1) reconstructed surface.

Pattern formation during the oxidation of CO on Pt{100}: a mesoscopic model

Constantly changing irregular patterns of carbon monoxide (CO) and oxygen are seen during CO oxidation on platinum crystals in the [100] orientation. Ours is the first reaction-diffusion model to reproduce this pattern formation on physically feasible length and time scales, faithfully incorporating the available experimental data. Numerical simulations show patterns made up of CO and oxygen fronts moving at similar speeds to those seen in experiments.

Study of Oscillations and Pattern Formation in the NO + CO Reaction on Pt(100) Surfaces through Dynamic Monte Carlo Simulation: Toward a Realistic Model

Oscillations and pattern formation driven by a surface reconstruction are studied for the catalytic reduction of NO by CO on Pt(100) single-crystal surfaces through dynamic Monte Carlo simulations at low pressure and relatively high temperatures conditions. This study incorporates recent experimental evidence obtained for the same reaction on a Rh(111) surface, which modifies the reaction scheme used in previous approaches. The main consequence of such experimental evidence is that the production of N(2) occurs through two parallel mechanisms: (a) the classical N + N recombination step; (b) the formation and subsequent decay of an (N-NO) intermediate species as the fastest pathway. Moreover, different factors influencing the NO dissociation rate, the key step in the whole reaction, such as the availability of neighboring vacant sites, the formation of N-islands, and the presence of other NO and CO adsorbed species in the neighborhood, are also taken into account and their effects discussed. Sustained, modulated, irregular, and damped oscillations are observed in our analysis as well as the formation of cellular structures and turbulent patterns. The effect and the importance of each elementary reaction step on the behavior of the system are discussed.

Hydration of CO adsorbed on Pt(100) at cryogenic temperatures in UHV environments

Adsorption of small amounts of D(2)O (ca. 0.01 L exposure) on CO(sat)/Pt(100) surfaces in ultrahigh vacuum at 105 K was found to split the asymmetric peak at 2100 cm(-1) in the infrared reflection absorption spectra attributed to the stretching of CO adsorbed on atop sites into two clearly defined features: an intense component, which shifted toward lower energies due to surface hydration of adsorbed CO (originally at 2100 cm(-1), peak a), and a smaller peak centered at 2094 cm(-1) (peak b), which remained fixed in position even after closing the D(2)O dosing valve. The energies of peaks a and b, as determined by statistical analyses, correlated very well with those reported in the literature for CO adsorbed at high coverages on Pt(100) originally in the (5 x 20) or (hex) reconstruction, and on the unreconstructed Pt(100)-(1 x 1), respectively, at 90 K. On these bases, the asymmetry of the peak observed for CO(sat)/Pt(100) (no D(2)O dosing) is ascribed to the presence of CO linearly adsorbed on these two different sites on the surface, for which the rate of hydration is larger for the (5 x 20) compared to the (1 x 1) phases.

Kinetic oscillations in the NO+CO reaction on the Pt(100) surface: An alternative reaction mechanism

Kinetic oscillations in the catalytic reduction of NO by CO on a reconstructing Pt(100) surface are simulated by using a dynamic Monte Carlo method. The simulation is based on the HS model and takes into account an alternative reaction mechanism arising from recent experimental findings for the catalytic reduction of No on Rh(111), which replaces the classical N+N recombination step by the formation of a (N-NO)(*) intermediary species for the production of molecular nitrogen. A synchronized mechanism and spatiotemporal patterns are observed during the oscillations. Oscillations are analyzed in terms of the controlling parameters involved in the reaction mechanism. Different values of these parameters lead to sustained, attenuated, and modulated oscillations.

Kinetic model for surface reconstruction

A microscopic kinetic model for the alpha <==> beta [e.g., hex <==> 1x1 for Pt(100) and 1x2 <==> 1x1 for Pt(110)] surface reconstruction is investigated by means of the mean field approximation and Monte Carlo simulations. It considers homogeneous phase nucleation that induces small surface phase defects. These defects can grow or decline via phase border propagation in dependence on the chemical coverage by an adsorbate A (CO). An asymmetry in the adsorbate surface diffusion from one surface phase to the other gives rise to two critical coverages that determine the intervals of stability of the homogeneous alpha phase, the dynamically stable heterogeneous state, and the homogeneous beta phase. Both surfaces show a very similar qualitative behavior regarding the phase transitions that are of second order in both cases. As a result the experimentally observed nonlinear island growth rate and the critical coverages can be explained at a quantitative level.

Internal spatiotemporal stochastic resonance in the presence of weak noise

We show the existence of internal stochastic resonance in a microscopic stochastic model for the oscillating A+1 / 2B(2) reaction on a square lattice. This stochastic resonance arises directly from the elementary reaction steps of the system without any external input. The lattice gas model is investigated by means of Monte Carlo simulations. It shows oscillation phenomena and mesoscopic pattern formation. Stochastic resonance arises when homogeneous nucleation of the individual lattice site states is considered. This nucleation is modeled as a weak noise process. As a result, synchronization of the kinetic oscillations is obtained. We show that all characteristics known from the research on stochastic resonance are obtained in our model. We also show that the model explains easily several phenomena observed in the experiment. Internal stochastic resonance may thus be an internal regulation mechanism of extreme adaptability.

Model of the catalytic A+B-->0 reaction with surface reconstruction

The A+B-->0 reaction model with a surface reconstruction is analyzed. It is compared with another similar model for the A+1/2B2-->0 reaction [V. N. Kuzovkov et al., J. Chem. Phys. 108, 5571 (1998)], which mimics the CO oxidation reaction on the Pt surfaces. The effect of monomer B adsorption instead of dimer B2 is examined. It is shown that qualitative system features such as reactant concentration oscillations are independent of this substitution.

Kinetic instabilities during the NO(x) reduction with hydrogen on Pt crystals studied with field emission on the nanoscale

This paper reviews field emission studies of kinetic instabilities occurring during the catalytic reduction of nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO(2)) by hydrogen on three-dimensional platinum crystals. Emphasis is placed on revealing that both field ion microscopy (FIM) and field electron microscopy (FEM) can image such instabilities under truly in situ reaction conditions with a lateral resolution on the nanoscale. In particular, oscillatory behavior with rapid ignition from a state of low to a state of high catalytic activity is demonstrated for both NO and NO(2) reduction. Results of a local chemical probing during FIM studies of the NO+H(2) reaction are also shown and provide clear evidence for the oscillatory behavior of water (detected as H(2)O(+) and H(3)O(+)) formation and for diffusion supply of NO into surface regions emptied during the stage of high catalytic activity. The rapid ignition ("surface explosion") of the catalytic cycle is discussed on the basis of an autocatalytic mechanism of the NO decomposition. On the (001) plane of the Pt crystal small island formation is seen to occur during the low-activity state of the catalytic cycle. Islands have a size equivalent to approximately 3 nm, move independently from each other, and do not merge when colliding. A tentative model is discussed associating islands with patches of hydroxyl groups. Very regular oscillatory behavior is demonstrated for the NO(2) reduction using FEM. Advantages as well as shortcomings of the FEM/FIM experimental approach are discussed and an outlook on future studies using local chemical probing will be given wherever appropriate. We reply to the Comment by Zhdanov [preceding paper, Phys. Rev. E 65, blacksquare, square, filled (2002)] on our recent paper [G. Zvejnieks and V. N. Kuzovkov, Phys. Rev. E 63, 051104 (2001)]. We demonstrate that our quite different viewpoints result, in fact, entirely from nonunique definitions of the master equation, which has nothing to do with neglecting important physical principles, as Zhdanov claims.

Comment on "surface restructuring, kinetic oscillations, and chaos in heterogeneous catalytic reactions"

In a recent article Zhdanov studied the oscillating NO+H2 reaction on the Pt(100) single-crystal surface [V. P. Zhdanov, Phys. Rev. E 59, 6292 (1999)]. We have scrutinized his model and found fundamental errors in the chemical modeling, in the modeling of the surface reconstruction and in the simulation procedure itself.

Calorimetric Measurement of the Energy Difference Between Two Solid Surface Phases

A recently designed single-crystal surface calorimeter has been deployed to measure the energy difference between two solid surface structures. The clean Pt{100} surface is reconstructed to a stable phase in which the surface layer of platinum atoms has a quasi-hexagonal structure. By comparison of the heats of adsorption of CO and of C(2)H(4) on this stable Pt{100}-hex phase with those on a metastable Pt{100}-(1x1) surface, the energy difference between the two clean phases was measured as 20 +/- 3 and 25 +/- 3 kilojoules per mole of surface platinum atoms.
