Magnetization Reversal in Ultrathin Films with Monolayer-Scale Surface Roughness

Systematic layer-by-layer characterization of multilayers for three-dimensional data storage and logic

Magnetic kink solitons are used as a probe to experimentally measure the layer-by-layer coercivity and interlayer coupling strength of an antiferromagnetically coupled perpendicularly magnetized Co multilayer. The magnetic response is well described by a nearest neighbor Ising macrospin model. By controlling the position of one, two or three solitons in the stack using globally applied magnetic fields, we successfully probe the switching of individual buried layers under different neighboring configurations, allowing us to access individual layer's characteristic parameters. We found the coercivity to increase dramatically up the multilayer, while the interlayer coupling strength decreased slightly. We corroborate these findings with scanning transmission electron microscopy images where a degrading quality of the multilayer is observed. This method provides a very powerful tool to characterize the quality of individual layers in complex multilayers, without the need for depth-sensitive magnetic characterization equipment.

Evidence for noncollinearity between surface and bulk magnetization in ultrathin Co films

The magnetization reversal of ultrathin Co films on Cu(001) has been investigated by grazing ion scattering and magneto-optical Kerr effect. Differences in the behavior of surface and bulk magnetization are found and attributed to the reduced coordination and site symmetry at the surface. The reversal behavior of the surface magnetization depends on the chemical surface composition. For pure Co films, the reversal of the bulk magnetization is preceded by a complete reversal of the surface magnetization. A particular magnetic state of the surface is suggested as a precursor for magnetization reversal.

Simulation of hysteresis in magnetic nanoparticles with Nosé thermostating

The magnetic hysteresis of a two-dimensional lattice of rotors with four-way anisotropy interaction and a Heisenberg exchange interaction is studied. The Hamiltonian dynamics of the lattice is thermostated using the Nosé thermostat, resulting in a system that approaches thermal equilibrium and which under certain conditions can remain in metastable states. Using physically realistic values for the interactions in a nanoparticle of monolayer thickness, we locate the Curie temperature of our lattice by determining the peak of the heat capacity curve. We then compare the coercive field of our two-dimensional lattice below this Curie temperature to the coercive field of an elliptical cobalt nanoparticle measured in experiment. We find an order of magnitude agreement between our lattice model and the experimental results, even though the value of the anisotropy used is more appropriate for a monolayer film than for the nanoparticle.

Observation of unequal activation volumes of wall-motion and nucleation processes in Co/Pd multilayers

We report the difference in activation volumes of wall-motion and nucleation processes in Co/Pd multilayers. Each activation volume was estimated from field dependence of wall-motion speed and nucleation rate, obtained by real-time domain imaging using a magneto-optical Kerr effect microscope. Delicate analysis shows that the two activation volumes are generally unequal and the ratio between the volumes varies noticeably from 0.9 to 1.1 with change of the multilayered structure. We found that the inequality in the two activation volumes has a crucial influence on magnetization reversal behavior: a process having a smaller activation volume dominates.
