Abstract
Th17 cells contribute to several inflammatory conditions and increasing evidence supports that Th17 cells are glucocorticoid resistant. However, Th17 cells in psoriasis and related diseases are glucocorticoid sensitive. We compare glucocorticoid sensitive and resistant immunological diseases and suggest that several aspects in Th17-related diseases alter glucocorticoid sensitivity of Th17 cells. We identify molecular pathways that are implicated in glucocorticoid sensitivity of Th17 cells in the literature, as this information is useful for developing approaches to overcome glucocorticoid-resistant immunopathology.

Abstract
We conducted DD-RT-PCR analysis to identify differentially expressed genes between high and low marbling score groups with extremely different IMF content of the longissimus lumborum muscles in Hanwoo. We detected 137 DEGs between two marbling score groups. Of these DEGs, 41 DEGs were highly expressed in the high marbling score group, whereas 96 DEGs showed a higher expression in the low marbling score group. Among them, we selected eight DEGs exhibiting the greatest differential expression levels between two marbling score groups. These genes could be classified as five candidate genes according to homology to known genes and biological functions. The expression of four DEGs except for ATP6 gene was confirmed by qRT-PCR. The TPI1 gene was significantly higher expressed at the high marbling group, whereas ACTA1, TNNT1 and MDH2 genes were significantly higher expressed at the low marbling group. Therefore, the TPI1 gene was up-regulated, suggesting that this gene may have an important function related to IMF deposition.

Abstract
In this study, we report the synthesis and characterization of novel hybrid nanocoating based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on anodized aluminum surfaces (AAO). The hybrid nanocoating was deposited by number of methods which include spray coating, spin coating and dip coating. The bonding of nanocoating with metal surface is an important parameter for successful modification of the metal surfaces. The improved adhesion of nanocoating on metal surfaces could be attributed to chemical bonding of sol-gel nanocoating with anodized surfaces. The nanocoated anodized aluminum surfaces showed superior adhesion and excellent anticorrosive properties. The nanocoated panels showed enhanced galvanic protection comparable to 80% of titanium metal as determined by galvanic corrosion measurements. It also showed higher thermal conductivities than stainless steel and bare anodized surfaces.

Abstract
PURPOSE The efficacy and safety of treatment with alfuzosin 10 mg plus propiverine 10 or 20 mg in men with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and an overactive bladder were investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this parallel-arm, prospective, multicentre, single-blind study, men who were ≥ 40 years old, had an International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) of ≥ 8, an Overactive Bladder Symptom Score (OABSS) of ≥ 3 and an OABSS urgency item score of ≥ 2 were randomised in a 1 : 1 :1 ratio to receive alfuzosin 10 mg alone (Group A) or with propiverine 10 mg (Group B) or 20 mg (Group C) for 8 weeks. Four and 8 weeks after commencing treatment, OABSS was measured along with IPSS, maximal urinary flow rate (Qmax ) and postvoid residual volume (PVR). Adverse events were recorded. RESULTS A total of 135 men, including 43 in Group A, 48 in Group B and 44 in Group C, completed the study. Relative to baseline, all groups demonstrated significant reductions in OABSS and the IPSS after eight treatment weeks (p < 0.005). The improvement of OABSS in Group C was significantly greater than Group A and B (Group A: 0.70 ± 1.94; Group B: 2.50 ± 2.98; Group C: 4.30 ± 3.40; p < 0.005). An observed improvement of Qmax and PVR in the three groups did not achieve statistical significance. Overall adverse event rates were higher in Group C but not significant compared with others. CONCLUSION In patients with LUTS and overactive bladder, combined therapy with alfuzosin 10 mg plus propiverine 20 mg was significantly more effective than alfuzosin monotherapy and propiverine 10 mg combined therapy in terms of improving OABSS while not significantly affecting Qmax or PVR.

Abstract
To avoid the systemic adverse effects that might occur after oral administration, transdermal delivery of ambroxol was studied as a method for maintaining proper blood levels for an extended period. Release of ambroxol according to concentration and temperature was determined, and permeation of drug through rat skin was studied using two chamber-diffusion cells. The solubility according to PEG 400 volume fraction was highest at 40% PEG 400. The rate of drug release from the EVA matrix increased with increased temperature and drug loading doses. A linear relationship existed between the release rate and the square root of loading rate. The activation energy (Ea) was measured from the slope of the plot of log P versus 1000/T and was found to be 10.71, 10.39, 10.33 and 9.87 kcal/mol for 2, 3, 4 and 5% loading dose from the EVA matrix, respectively. To increase the permeation rate of ambroxol across rat skin from the EVA matrix, various penetration enhancers such as fatty acids (saturated, unsaturated), propylene glycols, glycerides, pyrrolidones, and non-ionic surfactants were used. The enhancing effects of the incorporated enhancers on the skin permeation of ambroxol were evaluated using Franz diffusion cells fitted with intact excised rat skin at 37° using 40% PEG 400 solution as a receptor medium. Among the enhancers used, polyoxyethylene-2-oleyl ether increased the permeation rate by 4.25-fold. In conclusion, EVA matrix containing plasticizer and permeation enhancer could be developed for enhanced transdermal delivery of ambroxol.

Abstract
AIMS Our aim was to investigate factors associated with participation in buccal cell DNA collection using a large-scale prospective cohort study. METHODS Of the 183,634 Korea Medical Insurance Corporation (KMIC) prospective cohort study enrollees, 44,773 (36,794 men) were randomly selected. Buccal cell collection kits were mailed and collected from March to September 2004. Epidemiologic characteristics measured at baseline (1990 or 1992) and during follow-up (1998) were compared between respondents and nonrespondents. RESULTS Among the 13,084 (29.2%) respondents, 78.7% submitted usable samples (DNA concentration ≥3 μg). After adjustments for either or both age and family history of chronic disease, participation in men was positively associated with old age, a family history of chronic disease, low subjective health status, and regular exercise, and negatively associated with current smoking status. In women, only old age was associated with participation. Low body mass index (BMI) (<18.5 kg/m(2)), blood pressure, total cholesterol, and fasting blood glucose level were negatively associated with participation in men after adjustments for age and family history of chronic disease, but not in women, except for low BMI. CONCLUSIONS In this study, collecting buccal cell DNA by mailed survey has a low success rate (29%), and there appear to be a nonresponse bias and gender differences in the collection process.

Abstract
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the effects of baicalein, an antioxidant, on the bioavailability and pharmacokinetics of Doxorubicin (DOX) in rats. Thus, DOX was administered intravenously (i.v.; 10 mg x kg(-1)) or orally (p.o.; 50 mg x kg(-1)) with or without oral baicalein (0.3, 1.5 and 6 mg x kg(-1)). In the presence of 1.5 and 6 mg x kg(-1) of baicalein, the total area under the plasma concentration-time curve from time zero to time infinity (AUC) and the peak concentration (Cmax) of DOX were significantly greater and higher, respectively, than those of the control. Consequently, the absolute bioavailability (AB) of DOX in the presence of baicalein was 3.5-4.4%, which was significantly enhanced compared with that of the control group (2.2%). The relative bioavailability (RB) of DOX was 1.20 to 1.96 times higher than that of the control group. Compared to the intravenous control, the presence of oral baicalein increased the i.v. AUC of DOX and other pharmacokinetic parameters were not significantly affected. The enhanced bioavailability of oral DOX by oral baicalein may be due to the inhibition of both P-glycoprotein (P-gp) and the cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A subfamily by baicalein in the intestine and/or liver. This result suggests that the development of oral DOX is feasible by combination with baicalein that would be more convenient than the i.v. dosage forms. Furthermore, since the present study raises the awareness about potential drug interactions by concomitant use of DOX with baicalein, the dosage regimen of DOX should be taken into consideration, if this result is confirmed in clinical studies.

Abstract
A wearable electrocardiogram(ECG) device using conductive fabric sensor was compared with traditional Ag-AgCl electrode ECG device. The ECG signals were measured under existence of motion artifacts on variable running speed using treadmill to verify that wearable device can substitute traditional ECG device. A signal to noise ratio (SNR) and RR interval were compared between the two devices. The SNR of wearable device was similar or higher than that of clinical device and difference of RR interval was 2ms. The results show that the wearable ECG device using conductive fabric sensor can make similar performance with ECG device using Ag-AgCl electrode even under motion artifacts.

Abstract
Emergency situations can occur anywhere and anytime in daily life. In the paper, we present an e-health system to perceive emergency situations of a patient. Using a wearable shirt (BioShirt) and a personal monitoring system (PBM), we obtain the body signals of a user. The monitoring system collects and transmits the vital signs to a personal digital assistant (PDA) via a BlueTooth communication module. To detect emergency from the received data, a simple detection algorithm is performed in the PDA. And the PDA forwards the data to an e-health central monitoring room (ECMR), if necessary. In the ECMR, several operators supervise the registered users based on incoming body signals from each user's device. If an automatic decision-making algorithm generates an emergency alarm, the operators try to contact the corresponding patient and recognize his status. Ultimately if they decide that the patient is an urgent situation, they give phone calls and messages to the emergency center and the patient's medical attendant immediately.

Abstract
AIMS To investigate fusion expression between Bacillus thuringiensis crystal protein and a foreign protein, the expression of a fusion protein comprised of Cry1Ac, and enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) in B. thuringiensis Cry(-)B strain was examined. METHODS AND RESULTS The N-terminal fusion expression of EGFP in Cry1Ac was attempted under the control of the native cry1Ac promoter. The EGFP gene was cloned into pProMu and named pProMu-EGFP. The transformant, ProMu-EGFP/CB produced parasporal inclusions that were of bipyramidal-shaped crystals in size ranging from 200 to 300 nm. The fusion protein was approximately 150 kDa and identified by the immunoblot analysis using a Cry1Ac antibody and also a GFP antibody. The LC(50) of the ProMu-EGFP/CB was twofold higher when compared with that by the ProAc/CB. However, the crystal protein produced by the ProMu-EGFP/CB was effective on Plutella xylostella larvae. CONCLUSIONS The ProMu-EGFP/CB produced bipyramidal shaped and insecticidal crystals comprising fusion proteins. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY Through the N-terminal fusion expression of EGFP and Cry1Ac, expression and crystallization between the B. thuringiensis crystal protein and a foreign protein were validated.

Abstract
A strain of Bacillus thuringiensis with dual toxicity was isolated from Korean soil samples and named K2. K2 was determined as ssp. kurstaki (H3a3b3c) by serological test and produced bipyramidal-shaped parasporal inclusions. The plasmid and protein profiles of B. thuringiensis K2 were different from those of the reference strain, ssp. kurstaki HD-1. To verify gene type of B. thuringiensis K2, PCR analysis with specific cry gene primers was performed. The result showed that B. thuringiensis K2 had cry1Aa, cry1Ab, cry1C, and cry1D type genes, whereas ssp. kurstaki HD-1 had cry1Aa, cry1Ab, cry1Ac, and cry2 type genes. In addition, B. thuringiensis K2 had high toxicity against Spodoptera exigua and Culex pipiens, whereas B. thuringiensis ssp. kurstaki HD-1 does not have high toxicity against these two insect species.

Abstract
Genetic factors, such as the genes involved in the serotonin pathway, probably play an important role in the pathogenesis of bipolar disorder, and serotonin type 2A (5-HT2A) receptor gene promoter polymorphism -1438A/G has been reported. This study investigated the association between -1438A/G polymorphism of 5-HT2A receptor gene promoter and bipolar disorder in a Korean population. Using the polymerase chain reaction, -1438A/G polymorphism typed in 142 patients with bipolar disorder and in 148 normal control subjects. Differences in genotype distributions and allele frequencies of -1438A/G between patients with bipolar disorder and normal control subjects were tested for significance using the chi-squared test. There were significant differences in genotype distributions [chi2 = 9.697, degrees of freedom (df) = 2, P = 0.008] and allele frequencies (chi2 = 7.284, df = 1, P = 0.007) of -1438A/G between patients with bipolar disorder and normal control subjects. Although further studies are necessary, these results in a Korean population suggest that -1438A/G polymorphism of 5-HT2A receptor gene promoter may be causally related to the development of bipolar disorder.

Abstract
Circadian changes in the pharmacokinetics of triamcinolone acetonide were investigated in rabbits after a single intravenous administration of the drug, 1.0 mg/kg, at 08:00 and 20:00. At 20:00 hrs, the area under the plasma concentration-time curve from time zero to time infinity was significantly greater (46% increase), and this could be due to significantly slower total body clearance (31% decrease) than that at 08:00. The terminal half-life was significantly longer (82%) at 20:00. However, the apparent volume of distribution at steady state and total amount of unchanged drug excreted in 12 hr urine were not significantly different between two groups of rabbits.

Abstract
The enhancing effects of non-ionic surfactants on the permeation of piroxicam from the poloxamer gels were evaluated using Franz diffusion cells fitted with excised rat skins. The effectiveness of penetration enhancers, the ratio of piroxicam flux in the presence or absence of enhancers, was defined as the enhancement factor. Among the various non-ionic surfactants tested, polyoxyethylene-2-oleyl ether showed the highest enhancing effects with an enhancement factor of 2.84. To elucidate the mechanisms of the action of enhancers, thermal analysis and histological examinations were carried out. Thermal analysis reveals that various surfactants have different fluidizing effects on stratum corneum. Skin pretreated with the poloxamer 407 gels containing various surfactants showed a loosely layered stratum corneum and wide intercellular space.

Abstract
We report the difference in activation volumes of wall-motion and nucleation processes in Co/Pd multilayers. Each activation volume was estimated from field dependence of wall-motion speed and nucleation rate, obtained by real-time domain imaging using a magneto-optical Kerr effect microscope. Delicate analysis shows that the two activation volumes are generally unequal and the ratio between the volumes varies noticeably from 0.9 to 1.1 with change of the multilayered structure. We found that the inequality in the two activation volumes has a crucial influence on magnetization reversal behavior: a process having a smaller activation volume dominates.

Abstract
Eudragit microspheres, to float in the gastrointestinal tract, were prepared to prolong a gastrointestinal transit time. To enhance their buoyancy, non-volatile oil was added to the dispersed phase. When an oil component was not miscible with water, over 90% was entrapped within the microspheres and prolonged the floating time of the microspheres. Depending on the solvent ratio, the morphologies of the microspheres were different and the best result was obtained when the ratio of dichloromethane:ethanol:isopropanol was 5:6:4. As the isopropanol portion increased, the time to form microspheres was delayed and the amount of fibre-like substance produced was decreased, due to the slow diffusion rate of the solvent. Compared with microspheres prepared without non-volatile oil, the release rate of the drug from microspheres was faster in all cases tested, except the microspheres containing mineral oil. The solubility of the drug in the non-volatile oil affected the release profiles of the drugs. The non-volatile oil tends to decrease the glass transition temperature of prepared microspheres and change the release profile. The internal morphology of the microspheres was slightly different depending on the entrapped oil phase used. Tiny spherical objects were present at the inner surface of microspheres and the inside of the shell.

Abstract
An interacting quantum dot inserted in a mesoscopic ring is investigated. A variational ansatz is employed to describe the ground state of the system in the presence of the Aharonov-Bohm flux. It is shown that, for an even number of electrons with the energy level spacing smaller than the Kondo temperature, the persistent current has a value similar to that of a perfect ring with the same radius. On the other hand, for a ring with an odd number of electrons, the persistent current is found to be strongly suppressed compared to that of an ideal ring, which implies the suppression of the Kondo-resonant transmission. Various aspects of the Kondo-assisted persistent current are discussed.

Abstract
The pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of triamcinolone acetonide were determined to investigate buccal absorption from the mucoadhesive gels in rabbits. The enhancing effect of sodium deoxycholate as an enhancer on the buccal absorption of triamcinolone acetonide from the mucoadhesive gels was evaluated in rabbits. Thus, 2 mg/kg of triamcinolone acetonide was administered from the mucoadhesive gels containing an enhancer (enhancer group) or not (control group) via the buccal routes and compared with intravenous routes (1 mg/kg, i.v. group). AUC of the control, enhancer and i.v group were 2374+/-915, 3778+/-1721 and 3945+/-2085 h ng/ml, respectively, and the absolutive bioavailability of enhancer or i.v to control group were 159.14 or 332.35%, respectively. The average C(max) of control and enhancer group were 263+/-159 and 362+/-201 ng/ml, and the mean T(max) of the control group and enhancer group were 5.00+/-1.67 and 4.33+/-0.82 h, respectively, but there was no significant difference. As the triamcinolone acetonide gels containing sodium deoxycholate as an enhancer was administered to rabbits via the buccal routes, the relative bioavailability showed about 1.59-fold compared with the control group. Buccal administration of triamcinolone acetonide gels containing sodium deoxycholate as an enhancer to rabbits showed a relatively constant, sustained blood concentration with minimal fluctuation.

Abstract
To develop new formulations that have suitable bioadhesive force and provide sustained release in buccal area for an extended period of time, bioadhesive gels containing triamcinolone acetonide were prepared using two polymers, carbopol 934 and poloxamer 407 which were selected for their bioadhesiveness and gelling property, respectively. The drug release profiles from the gels were studied as a function of drug concentration and temperature. Different enhancers such as bile salts, glycols and non-ionic surfactants were used for the enhancement of its permeation through buccal mucosa. Among the enhancers used, sodium deoxycholate showed the best enhancing effects.

Abstract
Reflectance (R), transmittance (T), and absorptance (A) are calculated for a thin-film stack illuminated by a focused field. Based on Debye's integral representation, the electric and magnetic fields near focus are obtained, and the formulas for R, T, and A are represented as integrals of Poynting vectors. This formulation is applied to the case of a numerical aperture (N.A.) greater than 1.0 as well as to the case of a N.A. less than 1.0, and the corresponding numerical results are presented. They reveal that R, T, and A vary with N.A. and that the amount of variation increases with layer thickness.

Abstract
The growth responses of nine human intestinal bacteria to liquid culture of Cordyceps militaris Link. Pt. (Ascomycotina: Clavicipitaceae) collected from a pupa of Bombyx mori L. (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae) were examined using spectrophotometric and impregnated paper disk methods and compared to those of tetracycline and chloramphenicol, as well as those of Coptis japonica root-derived berberine chloride. The biologically active constituent of the cultures was characterized as cordycepin (3'-deoxyadenosine) by spectroscopic analysis. This compound revealed potent growth-inhibiting activity toward Clostridium paraputrificum and Clostridium perfringens at 10 microgram/disk without adverse effects on the growth of Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium breve, Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidobacterium adolescentis, Lactobacillus acidophilus, and Lactobacillus casei, whereas tetracycline and chloramphenicol inhibited the growth of these lactic acid-producing bacteria, clostridia and Escherichia coli. However, C. militaris-derived materials revealed no growth stimulation on the bifidobacteria and lactobacilli. These results may be an indication of at least one of the pharmacological actions of C. militaris. As a naturally occurring antibacterial agent, cordycepin could be useful as a new preventive agent against various diseases caused by clostridia.

Abstract
To increase the skin permeation of piroxicam from the Poloxamer 407 gel, fatty acid was added as a penetration enhancer to the Poloxamer 407 gel containing 1% piroxicam. The enhancing effects of the enhancer on the skin permeation of piroxicam were evaluated using Franz diffusion cells fitted with intact excised rat skins. To elucidate the modes of the action of enhancers, thermal analysis and histological examinations were conducted. Among fatty acids tested, linoleic acid showed the highest enhancing effects, with an enhancement factor (EF) of 1.76. From the thermal analysis results, fatty acids have fluidizing effects on the stratum corneum. The skin pretreated with the Poloxamer 407 gels containing piroxicam including linoleic acid showed a loosely layered stratum corneum and wide intercellular space.

Abstract
The viscosity and bioadhesive property of Carbopol-Poloxamer gels containing triamcinolone acetonide to mucosa were tested according to various concentrations of Carbopol gels of various pH. The increase in Carbopol concentration caused increased viscosity and bioadhesiveness. The neutralization of pH in various concentrations of Carbopol gels showed the increased viscosity, showing the highest viscosity and highest bioadhesiveness when neutralized to pH 6. A relationship between the viscosity and bioadhesive strength was shown from the neutralized Carbopol gels. The physicochemical interactions between triamcinolone acetonide and polymers were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometry. According to FTIR and XRD studies, the drug did not show any evidence of an interaction with the polymers used and was present in an unchanged state.

Abstract
Prolonged circulation of anticancer agent in blood is expected to decrease the host toxicity and enhance the anticancer activity. The purpose of this study is to develop and characterize the prolonged and sustained release formulation of anticancer agent using biodegradable poly(gamma-benzyl-L-glutamate)/poly(ethylene oxide) (PBLG/PEO) polymer nanoparticles. PBLG/PEO polymer is a hydrophilic/hydrophobic block copolymer and forms a micelle-like structure in solution. Spherical nanoparticles incorporating adriamycin were prepared by a dialysis method. The fluorescence intensity of adriamycin in the nanoparticles was increased when sodium dodecylsulfate was added. It is one of the evidences of entrapment of adriamycin in the polymer nanoparticles. Only 20% of entrapped drug was released in 24 h at 37 degrees C a and the release was dependent on the molecular weight of hydrophobic polymer. The endothermic peak of adriamycin at 197 degrees C disappeared in the nanoparticles system, suggesting the inhibition of a crystallization of adriamycin by polymer adsorption during the precipitation process. The mean residence time of adriamycin from the nanoparticles was more than threefold that from a free adriamycin. These results suggest usefulness of PBLG/PEO nanoparticles as a sustained and prolonged release carrier for adriamycin.

Abstract
Topical formulations of piroxicam were prepared using poloxamer 407 or poloxamer 188 by a cold method, and the permeation characteristics of piroxicam were evaluated. The permeation rate of piroxicam across the synthetic cellulose membrane and the rat skin decreased as the concentration of poloxamer increased. Though poloxamer gel exhibits reversed thermal behavior, the permeation rate of piroxicam increased with increasing temperature, indicating that the diffusional pathway of piroxicam is a water channel within the gel formulation. The pH of the gel did not affect the permeation rate of piroxicam significantly. As the concentration of piroxicam in the gel formulation increased, the permeation rate of piroxicam increased up to 1% and reached a plateau above 1%. Among various enhancers tested, polyoxyethylene-2-oleyl ether showed the highest enhancing effect, with an enhancement ratio of 2.84. Based on experimental results, the permeation rate of piroxicam can be controlled by changing the poloxamer concentration or drug concentration and by the addition of an appropriate enhancer.

Abstract
A rapid, selective and very sensitive ion-pairing reversed-phase HPLC method was developed for the simultaneous determination of trimebutine (TMB) and its major metabolite, N-monodesmethyltrimebutine (NDTMB), in rat and human plasma. Heptanesulfonate was employed as the ion-pairing agent and verapamil was used as the internal standard. The method involved the extraction with a n-hexane-isopropylalcohol (IPA) mixture (99:1, v/v) followed by back-extraction into 0.1 M hydrochloric acid and evaporation to dryness. HPLC analysis was carried out using a 4-microm particle size, C18-bonded silica column and water-sodium acetate-heptanesulfonate-acetonitrile as the mobile phase and UV detection at 267 nm. The chromatograms showed good resolution and sensitivity and no interference of plasma. The mean recoveries for human plasma were 95.4+/-3.1% for TMB and 89.4+/-4.1% for NDTMB. The detection limits of TMB and its metabolite, NDTMB, in human plasma were 1 and 5 ng/ml, respectively. The calibration curves were linear over the concentration range 10-5000 ng/ml for TMB and 25-25000 ng/ml for NDTMB with correlation coefficients greater than 0.999 and with within-day or between-day coefficients of variation not exceeding 9.4%. This assay procedure was applied to the study of metabolite pharmacokinetics of TMB in rat and the human.

Abstract
To develop a prolonged and sustained release preparation, we prepared an albumin microsphere-in-oil-in-water emulsion (S/O/W) and examined sustained release from it in comparison with other control preparations such as water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions and microspheres in vitro and in vivo, respectively. Tegafur was used as a model drug. A microsphere-in-oil emulsion was prepared by adding albumin microspheres to soybean oil containing 20% Span 80. To prepare an S/O/W emulsion, the microsphere-in-oil emulsion was added into an aqueous solution of hydroxypropyl methylcellulose containing Pluronic F68. The mean particle size of the albumin microspheres was 3 microns, and the ratio of entrapment of tegafur into albumin microspheres was about 25%. In an in vitro release test, the t75 of the S/O/W emulsion was fourfold greater and in an in vivo release test the mean residence time of tegafur from the S/O/W emulsion was more than twofold that from a W/O emulsion or microsphere system. The mean residence time of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) from an S/O/W emulsion was also greater than with other dosage forms. These results suggest the possible usefulness of an S/O/W emulsion for the sustained and prolonged release of tegafur.

Abstract
To develop an efficient topical delivery system for piroxicam using poloxamer gel formulation, physicochemical behavior of piroxicam in poloxamer was studied. The gelling property of poloxamer and the solubility of piroxicam in the poloxamer were investigated. The interaction between piroxicam and poloxamer was studied by x-ray diffractometry (XRD), infrared (IR) spectroscopy and differential thermal analysis (DTA) with a solid dispersion, coprecipitate, or physical mixture. Poloxamer 407 solutions showed the property of a gel when the concentration was higher than 15% (w/w) and poloxamer 407 increased the aqueous solubility of piroxicam by about 11-fold at the concentration of 22.5% (w/w). The results of XRD did not show the crystalline from of piroxicam in the solid dispersion and results of IR spectroscopic analysis showed an association between functional groups of piroxicam and poloxamer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rocuronium is a new nondepolarizing muscle relaxant. It features a rapid onset and lack of histamine release: It has an intermediate onset of action as vecuronium. The purpose of this study was to compare the neuromuscular action and condition of intubation after a bolus dose of rocuronium or vecuronium (2 x ED90). We also compared the duration of relaxation after intubation and maintenance doses of each drug. METHODS Sixty male or female patients, age 18-65, scheduled for elective surgery under general anesthesia were divided randomly into two groups (rocuronium and vecuronium group). All patients were ASA class I-II and pre-operative laboratory data were normal. Anesthesia was performed with fentanyl, isoflurane and O2. Rocuronium 0.6 mg/kg (2 x ED90) or vecuronium 0.1 mg/kg (2 x ED90) was given during induction of anesthesia. The response of adductor pollicis was measured with acceleromyography. Neuromuscular block was maintained by bolus injection of rocuronium 0.15 mg/kg or vecuronium 0.025 mg/kg when T1 reached 25% of control. Onset time, duration, recovery indices, intubation condition and T4/T1 ratio to 70% were recorded. Side effects were recorded during the study. RESULTS The onset time was significantly longer in vecuronium group than that of rocuronium group (102.8 +/- 26.9 s vs. 54.9 +/- 10.9 s, p < 0.05). The clinical durations of action were respectively 44.2 +/- 13.2 min in rocuronium group and 42.5 +/- 9.1 min in vecuronium group (T1 to 25%). The duration of the maintenance were respectively 28.8 +/- 9.5 min in rocuronium group and 26.1 +/- 6.8 min in vecuronium group (T1 to 25%). No adverse effect occurred with either drug. The intubation condition was similar in both groups. CONCLUSIONS We conclude that rocuronium provides a more rapid onset of action than that of vecuronium. Rocuronium is an intermediate-acting muscle relaxant as vecuronium with good to excellent intubation condition. It may be an useful alternative to vecuronium for rapid tracheal intubation.

Abstract
This study reports the overall prevalence of cognitive impairment and other mental dysfunctions. In Kangwha County, Korea, noninstitutionalized persons aged 65 and older, selected by a stratified two-stage cluster sampling, were interviewed by trained lay interviewers using the Korean version of Older Americans Resources and Services (K-OARS) and Mini-Mental Status Examination (MMSE). Overall, 17% of the population had mild cognitive impairment and 3% had severe cognitive impairment. Self-reports, self-ratings and interviewer ratings of various mental problems and symptoms included in the questionnaire were investigated as variables. Differences in the prevalence rate of various mental problems and symptoms according to a set of demographic variables were examined.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to construct a Korean version of the Geriatric Social Readjustment Questionnaire (K-GSRQ), to investigate its applicability to the elderly and to compare cross-cultural differences in the perception of the life events between Koreans and Americans. The K-GSRQ consists of 33 items. Most of the life events considered as crucial in old age were similar in ranking in comparison between Koreans and Americans. Some differences in ranking can be attributed to the differences in Socio-cultural backgrounds. The K-GSRQ was applied to controls, neurotic cases and cases with physical illnesses. The result suggest that the Korean version of the Geriatric Social Readjustment Questionnaire is applicable for the study of the health status of the elderly in Korea.

Abstract
To identify the unknown liver cell type initially invaded by sporozoites of mammalian malaria, young rats were inoculated intravenously with large numbers of Plasmodium berghei sporozoites obtained from infected Anopheles stephensi mosquitoes. Fine structural studies of liver specimens obtained from the rats within 2 min after inoculation demonstrated the presence of morphologically unaltered sporozoites in the cytoplasm of hepatocytes. Many sporozoites were also observed undergoing cytolysis within the lysophagosomes of Kupffer cells, as well as other phagocytic cells. These observations strongly suggest direct infection of the hepatocyte by the sporozoite.
