Surface phase diagrams from nested sampling

Studies in atomic-scale modeling of surface phase equilibria often focus on temperatures near zero Kelvin due to the challenges in calculating the free energy of surfaces at finite temperatures. The Bayesian-inference-based nested sampling (NS) algorithm allows for modeling phase equilibria at arbitrary temperatures by directly and efficiently calculating the partition function, whose relationship with free energy is well known. This work extends NS to calculate adsorbate phase diagrams, incorporating all relevant configurational contributions to the free energy. We apply NS to the adsorption of Lennard-Jones (LJ) gas particles on low-index and vicinal LJ solid surfaces and construct the canonical partition function from these recorded energies to calculate ensemble averages of thermodynamic properties, such as the constant-volume heat capacity and order parameters that characterize the structure of adsorbate phases. Key results include determining the nature of phase transitions of adsorbed LJ particles on flat and stepped LJ surfaces, which typically feature an enthalpy-driven condensation at higher temperatures and an entropy-driven reordering process at lower temperatures, and the effect of surface geometry on the presence of triple points in the phase diagrams. Overall, we demonstrate the ability and potential of NS for surface modeling.

Accelerating the prediction of inorganic surfaces with machine learning interatomic potentials

The surface properties of solid-state materials often dictate their functionality, especially for applications where nanoscale effects become important. The relevant surface(s) and their properties are determined, in large part, by the material's synthesis or operating conditions. These conditions dictate thermodynamic driving forces and kinetic rates responsible for yielding the observed surface structure and morphology. Computational surface science methods have long been applied to connect thermochemical conditions to surface phase stability, particularly in the heterogeneous catalysis and thin film growth communities. This review provides a brief introduction to first-principles approaches to compute surface phase diagrams before introducing emerging data-driven approaches. The remainder of the review focuses on the application of machine learning, predominantly in the form of learned interatomic potentials, to study complex surfaces. As machine learning algorithms and large datasets on which to train them become more commonplace in materials science, computational methods are poised to become even more predictive and powerful for modeling the complexities of inorganic surfaces at the nanoscale.

Plasma-Induced Surface Modification of Sapphire and Its Influence on Graphene Grown by Plasma-Enhanced Chemical Vapour Deposition

In this work, we study the influence of the different surface terminations of c-plane sapphire substrates on the synthesis of graphene via plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. The different terminations of the sapphire surface are controlled by a plasma process. A design of experiments procedure was carried out to evaluate the major effects governing the plasma process of four different parameters: i.e., discharge power, time, pressure and gas employed. In the characterization of the substrate, two sapphire surface terminations were identified and characterized by means of contact angle measurements, being a hydrophilic (hydrophobic) surface and the fingerprint of an Al- (OH-) terminated surface, respectively. The defects within the synthesized graphene were analyzed by Raman spectroscopy. Notably, we found that the I_D/I_G ratio decreases for graphene grown on OH-terminated surfaces. Furthermore, two different regimes related to the nature of graphene defects were identified and, depending on the sapphire terminated surface, are bound either to vacancy or boundary-like defects. Finally, studying the density of defects and the crystallite area, as well as their relationship with the sapphire surface termination, paves the way for increasing the crystallinity of the synthesized graphene.

Adsorption of HF and H2S on α-Al2O3 (0001) Surfaces: A DFT Study

Ex-service SF₆ adsorbents in SF₆ gas-insulated electric equipment contain many toxic substances. Inside, HF and H₂S are two typical toxic gases. Based on the first principle, the interaction process between HF/H₂S and α-Al₂O₃ (0001) surfaces was calculated using the density functional theory (DFT). The results showed that the adsorption of HF on α-Al₂O₃ (0001) is stronger than that of H₂S. Under the five adsorption sites, the adsorption effect of HF-H and HF-F was similar. At O-2 site, the adsorption energy of H₂S-H adsorption configuration is significantly higher than that of the other four sites. The density of states (DOS) indicated that new peaks appeared after adsorption. The DOS and partial density of states (PDOS) indicated that the adsorption of HF and H₂S occurs via chemical adsorption. The DOS and PDOS shifted to the right when the S atom was approaching, proving that the system shifts to instability. Compared with the energy gap of α-Al₂O₃ (0001), HF and H₂S adsorption systems decreased significantly. The energy gap of the HF adsorption system was 1.173 eV larger than that of the H₂S system and the geometry was relatively stable, which is consistent with the DOS and PDOS adsorption calculation results. Thus, the adsorption of HF and H₂S on α-Al₂O₃ (0001) surfaces was clearly different. The findings of this study may provide theoretical guidance for the adsorption of other gases or developing a new adsorbent.

Catalytic CO2 Capture via Ultrasonically Activating Dually Functionalized Carbon Nanotubes

High energy consumption and high cost have been the obstacles for large-scale deployment of all state-of-the-art CO₂ capture technologies. Finding a transformational way to improve mass transfer and reaction kinetics of the CO₂ capture process is timely for reducing carbon footprints. In this work, commercial single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were activated with nitric acid and urea under ultrasonication and hydrothermal methods, respectively, to prepare N-doped CNTs with the functional group of -COOH, which possesses both basic and acid functionalities. The chemically modified CNTs with a concentration of 300 ppm universally catalyze both CO₂ sorption and desorption of the CO₂ capture process. The increases in the desorption rate achieved with the chemically modified CNTs can reach as high as 503% compared to that of the sorbent without the catalyst. A chemical mechanism underlying the catalytic CO₂ capture is proposed based on the experimental results and further confirmed by density functional theory computations.

Nanostructure, Plastic Deformation, and Influence of Strain Rate Concerning Ni/Al2O3 Interface System Using a Molecular Dynamic Study (LAMMPS)

The plastic deformation mechanisms of Ni/Al₂O₃ interface systems under tensile loading at high strain rates were investigated by the classical molecular dynamics (MD) method. A Rahman-Stillinger-Lemberg potential was used for modeling the interaction between Ni and Al atoms and between Ni and O atoms at the interface. To explore the dislocation nucleation and propagation mechanisms during interface tensile failure, two kinds of interface structures corresponding to the terminating Ni layer as buckling layer (Type I) and transition layer (Type II) were established. The fracture behaviors show a strong dependence on interface structure. For Type I interface samples, the formation of Lomer-Cottrell locks in metal causes strain hardening; for Type II interface samples, the yield strength is 40% higher than that of Type I due to more stable Ni-O bonds at the interface. At strain rates higher than 1×109 s-1, the formation of L-C locks in metal is suppressed (Type I), and the formation of Shockley dislocations at the interface is delayed (Type II). The present work provides the direct observation of nucleation, motion, and reaction of dislocations associated with the complex interface dislocation structures of Ni/Al₂O₃ interfaces and can help researchers better understand the deformation mechanisms of this interface at extreme conditions.

Critical Role of Surface Termination of Sapphire Substrates in Crystallographic Epitaxial Growth of MoS2 Using Inorganic Molecular Precursors

A highly reproducible route for the epitaxial growth of single-crystalline monolayer MoS2 on a C-plane sapphire substrate was developed using vapor-pressure-controllable inorganic molecular precursors MoOCl4 and H2S. Microscopic, crystallographic, and spectroscopic analyses indicated that the epitaxial MoS2 film possessed outstanding electrical and optical properties, excellent homogeneity, and orientation selectivity. The systematic investigation of the effect of growth temperature on the crystallographic orientations of MoS2 revealed that the surface termination of the sapphire substrate with respect to the growth temperature determines the crystallographic orientation selectivity of MoS2. Our results suggest that controlling the surface to form a half-Al-terminated surface is a prerequisite for the epitaxial growth of MoS2 on a C-plane sapphire substrate. The insights on the growth mechanism, especially the significance of substrate surface termination, obtained through this study will aid in designing efficient epitaxial growth routes for developing single-crystalline monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides.

Atomistic mechanism of phase transformation between topologically close-packed complex intermetallics

Understanding how topologically close-packed phases (TCPs) transform between one another is one of the challenging puzzles in solid-state transformations. Here we use atomic-resolved tools to dissect the transition among TCPs, specifically the μ and P (or σ) phases in nickel-based superalloys. We discover that the P phase originates from intrinsic (110) faulted twin boundaries (FTB), which according to first-principles calculations is of extraordinarily low energy. The FTB sets up a pathway for the diffusional in-flux of the smaller 3d transition metal species, creating a Frank interstitial dislocation loop. The climb of this dislocation, with an unusual Burgers vector that displaces neighboring atoms into the lattice positions of the product phase, accomplishes the structural transformation. Our findings reveal an intrinsic link among these seemingly unrelated TCP configurations, explain the role of internal lattice defects in facilitating the phase transition, and offer useful insight for alloy design that involves different complex phases.

Atomic-Scale Mechanism of Spontaneous Polarity Inversion in AlN on Nonpolar Sapphire Substrate Grown by MOCVD

The performance of nitride devices is strongly affected by their polarity. Understanding the polarity determination and evolution mechanism of polar wurtzite nitrides on nonpolar substrates is therefore critically important. This work confirms that the polarity of AlN on sapphire prepared by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition is not inherited from the nitrides/sapphire interface as widely accepted, instead, experiences a spontaneous polarity inversion during the growth. It is found that at the initial growth stage, the interface favors the nitrogen-polarity, rather than the widely accepted metal-polarity or randomly coexisting. However, the polarity subsequently converts into the metal-polar situation, at first locally then expanding into the whole area, driven by the anisotropy of surface energies, which results in universally existing inherent inverse grain boundaries. Furthermore, vertical two-dimensional electron accumulation originating from the lattice symmetry breaking at the inverse grain boundary is first revealed. This work identifies another cause of high-density defects in nitride epilayers, besides lattice mismatch induced dislocations. These findings also offer new insights into atomic structure and determination mechanism of polarity in nitrides, providing clues for its manipulation toward the novel hetero-polarity devices.

Modelling the strength of mineral–organic binding: organic molecules on the α-Al2O3(0001) surface

Organic carbon (OC) is an essential component of soil. Sorption of OC to oxide mineral surfaces is a key process in soil preservation due to its ability to protect OC from microbial degradation. To understand the sorption of OC in soils and obtain a quantitative description of the binding of organic molecules to soil minerals, we investigated the binding of water and small organic molecules, typical building blocks of OC, on α-Al₂O₃, a common soil mineral. α-Al₂O₃ was modelled using (0001)-oriented periodic slabs, using density functional theory calculations with empirical dispersion correction. For water, dissociative adsorption was energetically preferred to molecular adsorption. Amine, amide and carboxylic acid functional groups were found to bind more strongly to this surface compared to water. Alcohol, ether, thiol and ester functional groups had adsorption energies very similar to that of water, while hydrocarbons were found to bind less strongly. Carboxylic acids were the strongest bound surface adsorbates in this study. Dissociated adsorption configurations (where allowed by the molecules' chemical nature) were usually more favourable than molecular adsorption. Hydrogen bonding was found to be a major contributor to the stability of adsorption configurations. This work shows that a number of organic functional groups, in particular amine, amide and carboxylic acids, bind to the α-Al₂O₃(0001) surface more strongly than water; thus they are likely to be adsorbed on this mineral surface under ambient conditions and to provide stability of adsorbed OC.

We evaluated the stability of organic molecules in soil by calculating these molecules' strength of adsorption on the α-Al₂O₃ mineral.

Direct growth of wafer-scale highly oriented graphene on sapphire

Direct chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth of wafer-scale high-quality graphene on dielectrics is of paramount importance for versatile applications. Nevertheless, the synthesized graphene is typically a polycrystalline film with high density of uncontrolled defects, resulting in a low carrier mobility and high sheet resistance. Here, we report the direct growth of highly oriented monolayer graphene films on sapphire wafers. Our growth strategy is achieved by designing an electromagnetic induction heating CVD operated at elevated temperature, where the high pyrolysis and migration barriers of carbon species are easily overcome. Meanwhile, the embryonic graphene domains are guided into good alignment by minimizing its configuration energy. The thus obtained graphene film accordingly manifests a markedly improved carrier mobility (~14,700 square centimeters per volt per second at 4 kelvin) and reduced sheet resistance (~587 ohms per square), which compare favorably with those from catalytic growth on polycrystalline metal foils and epitaxial growth on silicon carbide.

Crystal face dependent intrinsic wettability of metal oxide surfaces

Knowledge of intrinsic wettability at solid/liquid interfaces at the molecular level perspective is significant in understanding crucial progress in some fields, such as electrochemistry, molecular biology and earth science. It is generally believed that surface wettability is determined by the surface chemical component and surface topography. However, when taking molecular structures and interactions into consideration, many intriguing phenomena would enrich or even redress our understanding of surface wettability. From the perspective of interfacial water molecule structures, here, we discovered that the intrinsic wettability of crystal metal oxide is not only dependent on the chemical components but also critically dependent on the crystal faces. For example, the [Formula: see text] crystal face of α-Al2O3 is intrinsically hydrophobic with a water contact angle near 90°, while another three crystal faces are intrinsically hydrophilic with water contact angles <65°. Based on surface energy analysis, it is found that the total surface energy, polar component and Lewis base portion of the hydrophobic crystal face are all smaller than the other three hydrophilic crystal faces indicating that they have different surface states. DFT simulation further revealed that the adsorbed interfacial water molecules on each crystal face hold various orientations. Herein, the third crucial factor for surface wettability from the perspective of the molecular level is presented, that is the orientations of adsorbed interfacial water molecules apart from the macro-level chemical component and surface topography. This study may serve as a source of inspiration for improving wetting theoretical models and designing controllable wettability at the molecular/atomic level.

Density Functional Theory and Thermodynamics Modeling of Inner-Sphere Oxyanion Adsorption on the Hydroxylated α-Al2O3(001) Surface

The inner-sphere adsorption of AsO₄^3-, PO₄^3-, and SO₄^2- on the hydroxylated α-Al₂O₃(001) surface was modeled with the goal of adapting a density functional theory (DFT) and thermodynamics framework for calculating the adsorption energetics. While DFT is a reliable method for predicting various properties of solids, including crystalline materials comprised of hundreds (or even thousands) of atoms, adding aqueous energetics in heterogeneous systems poses steep challenges for modeling. This is in part due to the fact that environmentally relevant variations in the chemical surroundings cannot be captured atomistically without increasing the system size beyond tractable limits. The DFT + thermodynamics approach to this conundrum is to combine the DFT total energies with tabulated solution-phase data and Nernst-based corrective terms to incorporate experimentally tunable parameters such as concentration. Central to this approach is the design of thermodynamic cycles that partition the overall reaction (here, inner-sphere adsorption proceeding via ligand exchange) into elementary steps that can either be fully calculated or for which tabulated data are available. The ultimate goal is to develop a modeling framework that takes into account subtleties of the substrate (such as adsorption-induced surface relaxation) and energies associated with the aqueous environment such that adsorption at mineral-water interfaces can be reliably predicted, allowing for comparisons in the denticity and protonation state of the adsorbing species. Based on the relative amount of experimental information available for AsO₄^3-, PO₄^3-, and SO₄^2- adsorbates and the well-characterized hydroxylated α-Al₂O₃(001) surface, these systems are chosen to form a basis for assessing the model predictions. We discuss how the DFT + thermodynamics results are in line with the experimental information about the oxyanion sorption behavior. Additionally, a vibrational analysis was conducted for the charge-neutral oxyanion complexes and is compared to the available experimental findings to discern the inner-sphere adsorption phonon modes. The DFT + thermodynamics framework used here is readily extendable to other chemical processes at solid-liquid interfaces, and we discuss future directions for modeling surface processes at mineral-water and environmental interfaces.

Management of γ-Alumina with High-Efficient {111} External Surfaces for HDS Reactions

A series of γ-alumina samples with different exposure ratio of {111} facet were synthesized by an efficient hydrothermal method via adjusting the pH value of the gel precursor. The nanorod alumina supported catalyst with the highest exposure of {111} facet exhibited the best hydrodesulfurization (HDS) activities of both thiophene and dibenzothiophene (DBT). Characterization of the sulfided NiMo/Al2O3 catalyst with preferential exposure of {111} facet showed that the MoS2 nano slabs were inclined to distribute in the direction along the edges of alumina nanocrystal in reduced stacking layers. The selective exposure of {111} facet played a decisive role in obtaining alumina-supported HDS catalysts with improved intrinsic activity. This work helps to better understand the relationship between catalytic properties and varied support surfaces, which demonstrate a proper design of the catalyst support morphology on the facet-level.

Influence of Process Conditions on the Growth and Texture of CVD Alpha-Alumina

In the present study, the influence of experimental variables on the growth characteristics and texture development in chemically vapour deposited α-Al2O3 coatings was investigated. The emphasis was on the effects of H2S. The α-Al2O3 layers were deposited from the AlCl3-H2-CO2-HCl-H2S precursor system onto intermediate Ti(C,N) layers. The substrate was cemented carbide. The coatings were characterized with respect to microstructure and texture using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and electron back-scattering diffraction. The observations were unpredictable, suggesting that in addition to the growth rate, H2S strongly affected the texture of the α-Al2O3 coatings. The uncatalyzed α-Al2O3 coatings (H2S = 0) developed (11 2 ¯ 0) texture. With the increment of H2S concentration the texture changed from (11 2 ¯ 0) texture through (10 1 ¯ 0), (10 1 ¯ 2) and (10 1 ¯ 4) textures to (0001) texture. Growth regimes for (11 2 ¯ 0), (10 1 ¯ 0), (10 1 ¯ 2), (10 1 ¯ 4) and (0001) textures were depicted as a function of the H2S/CO2 ratio. Examples of grain-boundary and microstructural manipulation of CVD α-Al2O3 layers by applying texture control were presented.

Evolution of local strain in Ag-deposited monolayer MoS2 modulated by interface interactions

Strain is usually unavoidable in the fabrication of devices based on two-dimensional (2D) transition metal chalcogenides (TMDCs). When metals are deposited onto monolayer TMDCs, strain can be induced at metal-TMDC interfaces and evolves with elapsed time. However, the effect of the substrate on the strain evolution at the metal-TMDC interfaces is still unclear, which hinders the development of reliable 2D TMDC-based devices with perfect contacts. In this work, we investigated the evolution of metal-induced local strains for Ag-deposited monolayer MoS2 on three kinds of substrates with different interface interactions, i.e., sapphire, SiO2/Si, and mica. The interface interaction between MoS2 and sapphire is the strongest, while that between MoS2 and mica is the weakest. With the splitting of MoS2 Raman peaks as an indicator of local strain, the evolution behavior of the local strain at the Ag-MoS2 interfaces is found to greatly depend on the interface interactions from the underlying substrates. With elapsed time, the local strain is best preserved on sapphire but relaxed most easily on mica. Density-functional theory calculations show that the adsorption energies at the interfaces are different for MoS2 on different substrates, suggesting that the interface interaction between monolayer MoS2 and the substrates is crucial for the strain evolution. Our work is of benefit for the study of stability and reliability of devices based on TMDCs, particularly for flexible electronic devices.

Atomic mechanism of strong interactions at the graphene/sapphire interface

For atomically thin two-dimensional materials, interfacial effects may dominate the entire response of devices, because most of the atoms are in the interface/surface. Graphene/sapphire has great application in electronic devices and semiconductor thin-film growth, but the nature of this interface is largely unknown. Here we find that the sapphire surface has a strong interaction with some of the carbon atoms in graphene to form a C-O-Al configuration, indicating that the interface interaction is no longer a simple van der Waals interaction. In addition, the structural relaxation of sapphire near the interface is significantly suppressed and very different from that of a bare sapphire surface. Such an interfacial C-O-Al bond is formed during graphene growth at high temperature. Our study provides valuable insights into understanding the electronic structures of graphene on sapphire and remote control of epitaxy growth of thin films by using a graphene–sapphire substrate.

Understanding the atomic arrangement and binding nature of 2D materials with substrates is crucial to understand their properties and utilize their functions. Here, authors report that at high temperature graphene and α-Al₂O₃ substrate form a C-O-Al bond, having strong interactions, while interfacial structural relaxations of sapphire remain suppressed.

Surface phase diagrams of La-based perovskites towards the O-rich limit from first principles

The exposed termination of transition-metal oxide surfaces plays a major role in determining the catalyst performance in redox reactions. In this contribution, the surface phase diagrams of LaMO₃(001) (M = Sc-Fe) and LaMO₃(110) (M = Co-Cu) are constructed by using the DFT+U method. The stabilities of six terminations derived from the stoichiometric MO₂ and LaO surfaces are determined over a wide range of temperatures and oxygen partial pressures. The surface phase diagrams are calculated towards the O-rich limit in which the chemical potential of oxygen anions of perovskites equals that of gas-phase oxygen while the chemical potential of M cations is limited by thermodynamic boundary conditions. It is found that the surface phase diagrams are closely related to the reducibility of M cations, which is reflected in the oxygen adsorption energy and oxygen vacancy formation energy on the MO₂- and LaO-terminated surfaces and can be measured by the third ionization energies of the M²⁺ cations. According to the surface phase diagrams, the most stable surface termination is predicted to be of MO₂ type for LaMO₃ (M = Sc-Fe) and LaO type for LaMO₃ (M = Co-Cu) under solid oxide fuel cell operating conditions. Because the M cations become more readily reduced on going from left to right across the period, LaCoO₃ may form an oxygen-deficient crystal structure at high temperatures and LaNiO₃ and LaCuO₃ would be decomposed into oxides containing the transition metals in a lower oxidation state.

Vibrational spectroscopy of hydroxylated α-Al2O3(0001) surfaces with and without water: An ab initio molecular dynamics study

Using gradient- and dispersion-corrected density functional theory in connection with ab initio molecular dynamics and efficient, parametrized Velocity-Velocity Autocorrelation Function (VVAF) methodology, we study the vibrational spectra (Vibrational Sum Frequency, VSF, and infrared, IR) of hydroxylated α-Al₂O₃(0001) surfaces with and without additional water. Specifically, by considering a naked hydroxylated surface and the same surface with a particularly stable, "ice-like" hexagonal water later allows us to identify and disentangle main spectroscopic bands of OH bonds, their orientation and dynamics, and the role of water adsorption. In particular, we assign spectroscopic signals around 3700 cm^-1 as being dominated by perpendicularly oriented non-hydrogen bonded aluminol groups, with and without additional water. Furthermore, the thin water layer gives spectroscopic signals which are already comparable to previous theoretical and experimental findings for the solid/(bulk) liquid interface, showing that water molecules closest to the surface play a decisive role in the vibrational response of these systems. From a methodological point of view, the effects of temperature, anharmonicity, hydrogen-bonding, and structural dynamics are taken into account and analyzed, allowing us to compare the calculated IR and VSF spectra with the ones based on normal mode analysis and vibrational density of states. The VVAF approach employed in this work appears to be a computationally accurate yet feasible method to address the vibrational fingerprints and dynamical properties of water/metal oxide interfaces.

Density functional theory study of the OH, Cl and H2O coadsorption on the step-defect Al2O3 film surface

Density functional theory has been performed on the step-defect Al2O3 film surfaces with the OH, Cl and H2O molecules coadsorption. Three kinds of step-defect (Al, O2, Al3) surfaces are optimized and the adsorption energy, the binding energies of film and adsorbates are calculated. The energy properties are similar in H2O or Cl coadsorption configurations, but have obvious differences for the OH group coadsorption configuration due to large numbers of adsorbate species and numbers. After structural relaxation, most of the step-defect surfaces could be easily hydroxylated. The Al3 step-defect surfaces are easier to be corroded by H2O and coadsorption molecules due to lots of unsaturated dangling bonds, some H2O molecules are located into the step-defect, surface Al atoms collapse inside the steps and several inner O atoms move outside the film. When the Cl exists in the aqueous solution, it would restrict H2O molecules from dissociating into OH groups. Moreover, the dissociation and recombination of H2O molecules could be promoted by OH groups.

Water adsorbate phases on ZnO and impact of vapor pressure on the equilibrium shape of nanoparticles

ZnO nanoparticles are used as catalysts and have potential applications in gas-sensing and solar energy conversion. A fundamental understanding of the exposed crystal facets, their surface chemistry, and stability as a function of environmental conditions is essential for rational design and improvement of synthesis and properties. We study the stability of water adsorbate phases on the non-polar low-index (101¯0) and (112¯0) surfaces from low coverage to multilayers using ab initio thermodynamics. We show that phonon contributions and the entropies due to a 2D lattice gas at low coverage and multiple adsorbate configurations at higher coverage have an important impact on the stability range of water adsorbate phases in the (T,p) phase diagram. Based on this insight, we compute and analyze the possible growth mode of water films for pressures ranging from UHV via ambient conditions to high pressures and the impact of water adsorption on the equilibrium shape of nanoparticles in a humid environment. A 2D variant of the Wulff construction shows that the (101¯0) and (112¯0) surfaces coexist on 12-faceted prismatic ZnO nanoparticles in dry conditions, while in humid environment, the (101¯0) surface is selectively stabilized by water adsorption resulting in hexagonal prisms.

Te Monolayer-Driven Spontaneous van der Waals Epitaxy of Two-dimensional Pnictogen Chalcogenide Film on Sapphire

Demands on high-quality layer structured two-dimensional (2D) thin films such as pnictogen chalcogenides and transition metal dichalcogenides are growing due to the findings of exotic physical properties and potentials for device applications. However, the difficulties in controlling epitaxial growth and the unclear understanding of van der Waals epitaxy (vdWE) for a 2D chalcogenide film on a three-dimensional (3D) substrate have been major obstacles for the further advances of 2D materials. Here, we exploit the spontaneous vdWE of a high-quality 2D chalcogenide (Bi_0.5Sb_1.5Te₃) film by the chalcogen-driven surface reconstruction of a conventional 3D sapphire substrate. It is verified that the in situ formation of a pseudomorphic Te atomic monolayer on the surface of sapphire, which results in a dangling bond-free surface, allows the spontaneous vdWE of 2D chalcogenide film. Since this route uses the natural surface reconstruction of sapphire with chalcogen under vacuum condition, it can be scalable and easily utilized for the developments of various 2D chalcogenide vdWE films through conventional thin-film fabrication technologies.

van der Waals density functionals applied to corundum-type sesquioxides: bulk properties and adsorption of CH3 and C6H6 on (0001) surfaces

van der Waals (vdW) forces play an important role in the adsorption of molecules on the surface of solids. However, the choice of the most suitable vdW functional for different systems is an essential problem which must be addressed for different systems. The lack of a systematic study on the performance of the vdW functionals in the bulk and adsorption properties of metal-oxides motivated us to examine different vdW approaches and compute the bulk and molecular adsorption properties of α-Cr2O3, α-Fe2O3, and α-Al2O3. For the bulk properties, we compared our results for the heat of formation, cohesive energy, lattice parameters and bond distances between the different vdW functionals and available experimental data. Next we studied the adsorption of benzene and CH3 molecules on top of different oxide surfaces. We employed different approximations to exchange and correlation within DFT, namely, the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) GGA, (PBE)+U, and vdW density functionals [DFT(vdW-DF/DF2/optPBE/optB86b/optB88)+U] as well as DFT-D2/D3(+U) methods of Grimme for the bulk calculations and optB86b-vdW(+U) and DFT-D2(+U) for the adsorption energy calculations. Our results highlight the importance of vdW interactions not only in the adsorption of molecules, but importantly also for the bulk properties. Although the vdW contribution in the adsorption of CH3 (as a chemisorption interaction) is less important compared to the adsorption of benzene (as a physisorption interaction), this contribution is not negligible. Also adsorption of benzene on ferryl/chromyl terminated surfaces shows an important chemisorption contribution in which the vdW interactions become less significant.

Understanding the Phase Diagram of Self-Assembled Monolayers of Alkanethiolates on Gold

Alkanethiolate monolayers on gold are important both for applications in nanoscience as well as fundamental studies of adsorption and self-assembly at metal surfaces. While considerable experimental effort has been put into understanding the phase diagram of these systems, theoretical work based on density functional theory (DFT) has long been hampered by the inability of conventional exchange-correlation functionals to describe dispersive interactions. In this work, we combine dispersion-corrected DFT calculations using the new vdW-DF-CX functional with the ab initio thermodynamics method to study the stability of dense standing-up and low-coverage lying-down phases on Au(111). We demonstrate that the lying-down phase has a thermodynamic region of stability starting from thiolates with alkyl chains consisting of n ≈ 3 methylene units. This phase emerges as a consequence of a competition between dispersive chain-chain and chain-substrate interactions, where the strength of the latter varies more strongly with n. A phase diagram is derived under ultrahigh-vacuum conditions, detailing the phase transition temperatures of the system as a function of the chain length. The present work illustrates that accurate ab initio modeling of dispersive interactions is both feasible and essential for describing self-assembled monolayers.

Wafer-Scale and Wrinkle-Free Epitaxial Growth of Single-Orientated Multilayer Hexagonal Boron Nitride on Sapphire

Large-scale growth of high-quality hexagonal boron nitride has been a challenge in two-dimensional-material-based electronics. Herein, we present wafer-scale and wrinkle-free epitaxial growth of multilayer hexagonal boron nitride on a sapphire substrate by using high-temperature and low-pressure chemical vapor deposition. Microscopic and spectroscopic investigations and theoretical calculations reveal that synthesized hexagonal boron nitride has a single rotational orientation with AA' stacking order. A facile method for transferring hexagonal boron nitride onto other target substrates was developed, which provides the opportunity for using hexagonal boron nitride as a substrate in practical electronic circuits. A graphene field effect transistor fabricated on our hexagonal boron nitride sheets shows clear quantum oscillation and highly improved carrier mobility because the ultraflatness of the hexagonal boron nitride surface can reduce the substrate-induced degradation of the carrier mobility of two-dimensional materials.

Understanding and Tuning the Intrinsic Hydrophobicity of Rare-Earth Oxides: A DFT+U Study

Rare-earth oxides (REOs) possess a remarkable intrinsic hydrophobicity, making them candidates for a myriad of applications. Although the superhydrophobicity of REOs has been explored experimentally, the atomistic details of the structure at the oxide-water interface are still not well understood. In this work, we report a density functional theory study of the interaction between water and CeO2, Nd2O3, and α-Al2O3 to explain their different wettability. The wetting of the metal oxide surface is controlled by geometric and electronic factors. While the electronic term is related to the acid-base properties of the surface layer, the geometric factor depends on the matching between adsorption sites and oxygen atoms from the hexagonal water network. For all the metal oxides considered here, water dissociation is confined to the first oxide-water layer. Hydroxyl groups on α-Al2O3 are responsible for the strong oxide-water interaction, and thus, both Al- and hydroxyl-terminated wet. On CeO2, the intrinsic hydrophobicity of the clean surface disappears when lattice hydroxyl groups (created by the reaction of water with oxygen vacancies) are present as they dominate the interaction and drive wetting. Therefore, hydroxyls may convert a intrinsic nonwetting surface into a wetting one. Finally, we also report that surface modifications, like cation substitution, do not change the acid-base character of the surface, and thus they show the same nonwetting properties as native CeO2 or Nd2O3.

First principles study of the atomic layer deposition of alumina by TMA-H2O-process

Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is a coating technology used to produce highly uniform thin films. Aluminiumoxide, Al2O3, is mainly deposited using trimethylaluminium (TMA) and water as precursors and is the most studied ALD-process to date. However, only few theoretical studies have been reported in the literature. The surface reaction mechanisms and energetics previously reported focus on a gibbsite-like surface model but a more realistic description of the surface can be achieved when the hydroxylation of the surface is taken into account using dissociatively adsorbed water molecules. The adsorbed water changes the structure of the surface and reaction energetics change considerably when compared to previously studied surface model. Here we have studied the TMA-H2O process using density functional theory on a hydroxylated alumina surface and reproduced the previous results for comparison. Mechanisms and energetics during both the TMA and the subsequent water pulse are presented. TMA is found to adsorb exothermically onto the surface. The reaction barriers for the ligand-exchange reactions between the TMA and the surface hydroxyl groups were found to be much lower compared to previously presented results. TMA dissociation on the surface is predicted to saturate at monomethylaluminium. Barriers for proton diffusion between surface sites are observed to be low. TMA adsorption was also found to be cooperative with the formation of methyl bridges between the adsorbants. The water pulse was studied using single water molecules reacting with the DMA and MMA surface species. Barriers for these reactions were found to reasonable in the process conditions. However, stabilizing interactions amongst water molecules were found to lower the reaction barriers and the dynamical nature of water is predicted to be of importance. It is expected that these calculations can only set an upper limit for the barriers during the water pulse.

Charge optimized many-body (COMB) potential for Al2O3 materials, interfaces, and nanostructures

This work presents the development and applications of a new empirical, variable charge potential for Al2O3 systems within the charge optimized many-body (COMB) potential framework. The potential can describe the fundamental physical properties of Al2O3, including cohesive energy, elastic constants, defect formation energies, surface energies and phonon properties of α-Al2O3 comparable to that obtained from experiments and first-principles calculations. The potential is further employed in classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to validate and predict the properties of the Al (1 1 1)-Al2O3 (0 0 0 1) interface, tensile properties of Al nanowires, Al2O3 nanowires, Al2O3-covered Al nanowires, and defective Al2O3 nanowires. The results demonstrate that the potential is well-suited to model heterogeneous material systems involving Al and Al2O3. Most importantly, the parameters can be seamlessly coupled with COMB3 parameters for other materials to enable MD simulations of a wide range of heterogeneous material systems.

Optically probing Al-O and O-H vibrations to characterize water adsorption and surface reconstruction on α-alumina: an experimental and theoretical study

Oxide/water interfaces are ubiquitous in a wide variety of applications and the environment. Despite this ubiquity, and attendant decades of study, gaining molecular level insight into water/oxide interaction has proven challenging. In part, this challenge springs from a lack of tools to concurrently characterize changes in surface structure (i.e., water/oxide interaction from the perspective of the solid) and O-H population and local environment (i.e., water/oxide interaction from the water perspective). Here, we demonstrate the application of surface specific vibrational spectroscopy to the characterization of the interaction of the paradigmatic α-Al2O3(0001) surface and water. By probing both the interfacial Al-O (surface phonon) and O-H spectral response, we characterize this interaction from both perspectives. Through electronic structure calculation, we assign the interfacial Al-O response and rationalize its changes on surface dehydroxylation and reconstruction. Because our technique is all-optical and interface specific, it is equally applicable to oxide surfaces in vacuum, ambient atmospheres and at the solid/liquid interface. Application of this approach to additional alumina surfaces and other oxides thus seems likely to significantly expand our understanding of how water meets oxide surfaces and thus the wide variety of phenomena this interaction controls.

Insights into How Fluorine-Adsorption and n-Type Doping Affect the Relative Stability of the (001) and (101) Surfaces of TiO2: Enhancing the Exposure of More Active but Thermodynamically Less Stable (001)

The stability of both the pure and fluorine (F)-adsorbed surface of TiO2 is examined on the basis of density functional calculations. For pure surfaces, both the beneficial local geometric structures and local potential strengthen the Ti-O binding in (101), rendering it the most stable surface. For F-adsorbed surfaces, F-adsorption significantly weakens the Ti-O bonds in (101) but strengthens them in (001), so that (001) becomes more stable than (101) for the F-adsorbed surfaces. On the basis of this observation, we further show that the n-type doping in TiO2 can significantly decrease the ability of F-adsorption in switching the relative stability of the two surfaces. The present work not only provides new insights into the physical and chemical properties about both pure and F-adsorbed surfaces of TiO2 and conclusively explains related experimental results but also suggests viable ways to prepare TiO2 samples with a high percentage of (001).
