Electron Dynamics in Open Quantum Systems: The Driven Liouville-von Neumann Methodology within Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory

A first-principles approach to describe electron dynamics in open quantum systems driven far from equilibrium via external time-dependent stimuli is introduced. Within this approach, the driven Liouville-von Neumann methodology is used to impose open boundary conditions on finite model systems whose dynamics is described using time-dependent density functional theory. As a proof of concept, the developed methodology is applied to simple spin-compensated model systems, including a hydrogen chain and a graphitic molecular junction. Good agreement between steady-state total currents obtained via direct propagation and those obtained from the self-consistent solution of the corresponding Sylvester equation indicates the validity of the implementation. The capability of the new computational approach to analyze, from first principles, non-equilibrium dynamics of open quantum systems in terms of temporally and spatially resolved current densities is demonstrated. Future extensions of the approach toward the description of dynamical magnetization and decoherence effects are briefly discussed.

Laser-Driven Petahertz Electron Ratchet Nanobubbles

A laser-driven quantum electron ratchet nanodevice is proposed. The ratchet consists of a series of disconnected bubble-shaped nanodiode structures with a sharp tip to induce a large field enhancement. A laser pulse is used to create a plasmon oscillation in the vertical direction, and the shape of the bubble funnels the electrons toward the sharp tip leading to net electron transport in the horizontal direction. The electron current carries the fingerprint of the driving laser field. The system is modeled by using the time-dependent orbital free density functional theory with nanostructures containing thousands of atoms.

Base pair opening in a damped helicoidal Joyeux-Buyukdagli model of DNA in an external force field

Upon the Joyeux-Buyukdagli model of DNA, the helicoidal interactions are introduced, and their effects on the dynamical behaviors of the molecule investigated. A theoretical framework for the analysis is presented in an external force field, taking into account Stokes and hydrodynamics viscous forces. In the semi-discrete approximation, the dynamics of the molecule is found governed by the cubic complex Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) equation. By choosing an appropriate decoupling ansatz, the cubic CGL equation is transformed into a nonlinear differential equation whose analytical solitary wave-like solutions can be explored by means of the direct method, which is more tractable in case where the form of soliton solutions is known. Based on this, a dissipative bright-like soliton solution is obtained. Numerical experiments have been done, and relevant results were brought out, such as the quantitative and qualitative influences of the helical interactions on the parameters of the traveling bubble. The important role-played by these interactions in the DNA biological processes is brought out, showing that depending on the wave number, their effects can increase, decrease, or keep constant the bubble angular frequency, velocity, amplitude, and width, as well as the energy involved by enzymes in the initiation of DNA biological processes. This can prevent some coding or reading errors and resulting genetic damages. Analytical predictions and numerical experiments were in good agreement.

Unusual Transport Properties with Noncommutative System-Bath Coupling Operators

Understanding nonequilibrium transport is crucial for controlling energy flow in nanoscale systems. We study thermal energy transfer in a generalized nonequilibrium spin-boson model (NESB) with noncommutative system-bath coupling operators and discover its unusual transport properties. Compared to the conventional NESB, the energy current is greatly enhanced by rotating the system-bath coupling operators. Constructive contribution to thermal rectification can be optimized when two sources of asymmetry, system-bath coupling strength and coupling operators, coexist. At the weak coupling and the adiabatic limit, the scaling dependence of energy current on the coupling strength and the system energy gap changes drastically when the coupling operators become noncommutative. These scaling relations can further be explained analytically by the nonequilibrium polaron-transformed Redfield equation (NE-PTRE). These novel transport properties, arising from the pure quantum effect of noncommutative coupling operators, suggest an unvisited dimension of controlling transport in nanoscale systems and should generally appear in other nonequilibrium set-ups and driven systems.

Directed momentum current induced by the PT-symmetric driving

We investigate the directed momentum current in the quantum kicked rotor model with PT-symmetric deriving potential. For the quantum nonresonance case, the values of quasienergy become complex when the strength of the imaginary part of the kicking potential exceeds a threshold value, which demonstrates the appearance of the spontaneous PT symmetry breaking. In the vicinity of the transition point, the momentum current exhibits a staircase growth with time. Each platform of the momentum current corresponds to the mean momentum of some eigenstates of the Floquet operator whose imaginary parts of the quasienergy are significantly large. Above the transition point, the momentum current increases linearly with time. Interestingly, its acceleration rate exhibits a kind of "quantized" increment with the kicking strength. We propose a modified classical acceleration mode of the kicked rotor model to explain such an intriguing phenomenon. Our theoretical prediction is in good agreement with numerical results.

Dynamical signatures of molecular symmetries in nonequilibrium quantum transport

Symmetries play a crucial role in ubiquitous systems found in Nature. In this work, we propose an elegant approach to detect symmetries by measuring quantum currents. Our detection scheme relies on initiating the system in an anti-symmetric initial condition, with respect to the symmetric sites, and using a probe that acts like a local noise. Depending on the position of the probe the currents exhibit unique signatures such as a quasi-stationary plateau indicating the presence of metastability and multi-exponential decays in case of multiple symmetries. The signatures are sensitive to the characteristics of the probe and vanish completely when the timescale of the coherent system dynamics is much longer than the timescale of the probe. These results are demonstrated using a 4-site model and an archetypal example of the para-benzene ring and are shown to be robust under a weak disorder.

Identification of two mechanisms for current production in a biharmonic flashing electron ratchet

Ratchets rectify the motion of randomly moving particles, which are driven by isotropic sources of energy such as thermal and chemical energy, without applying a net, time-averaged force between source and drain. This paper describes the behavior of a damped electron, modeled by a quantum Lindblad master equation, within a flashing ratchet (a one-dimensional potential that oscillates between a flat surface and a periodic asymmetric surface). By examining the complete space of all biharmonic potential shapes and a large range of oscillation frequencies, two modes of ratchet operation, differentiated by their oscillation frequencies (relative to the rate of electron relaxation), are identified. Slow-oscillating, strong friction ratchets operate by a classical, overdamped mechanism. In fast-oscillating, weak friction ratchets, current is primarily produced when the frequency of the oscillating potential is resonant with the beating of the electron wave function in the potential well. The shape of the ratchet potential determines the direction of the current (and, in some cases, straightforwardly accounts for current reversals), but the maximum achievable current at any shape is controlled by the degree of friction applied to the electron.

Driven Liouville von Neumann Equation in Lindblad Form

The Driven Liouville von Neumann approach [J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2014, 10, 2927-2941] is a computationally efficient simulation method for modeling electron dynamics in molecular electronics junctions. Previous numerical simulations have shown that the method can reproduce the exact single-particle dynamics while avoiding density matrix positivity violation found in previous implementations. In this study we prove that in the limit of infinite lead models the underlying equation of motion can be cast in Lindblad form. This provides a formal justification for the numerically observed density matrix positivity conservation.

Nonlinearity effects on the directed momentum current

We investigate the quantum transport dynamics governed by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a periodically-δ-kicking potential and discover the emergence of a directed current in momentum space. With the increase of nonlinearity, we find strikingly that the momentum current decreases, reverses, and finally vanishes, indicating that the quantum transport can be effectively manipulated through adjusting the nonlinearity. The underlying dynamic mechanism is uncovered and some important implications are addressed.

Accurate determination of plasmonic fields in molecular junctions by current rectification at optical frequencies

Current rectification, i.e., induction of dc current by oscillating electromagnetic fields, is demonstrated in molecular junctions at an optical frequency. The magnitude of rectification is used to accurately determine the effective oscillating potentials in the junctions induced by the irradiating laser. Since the gap size of the junctions used in this study is precisely determined by the length of the embedded molecules, the oscillating potential can be used to calculate the plasmonic enhancement of the electromagnetic field in the junctions. With a set of junctions based on alkyl thiolated molecules with identical HOMO-LUMO gap and different lengths, an exponential dependence of the plasmonic field enhancement on gap size is observed.

Realization of a Brownian engine to study transport phenomena: a semiclassical approach

Brownian particles moving in a periodic potential with or without external load are often used as good theoretical models for the phenomenological studies of microscopic heat engines. The model that we propose here, assumes the particle to be moving in a nonequilibrium medium and we have obtained the exact expression for the stationary current density. We have restricted our consideration to the overdamped motion of the Brownian particle. We present here a self-consistent theory based on the system-reservoir coupling model, within a microscopic approach, of fluctuation induced transport in the semiclassical limit for a general system coupled with two heat baths kept at different temperatures. This essentially puts forth an approach to semiclassical state-dependent diffusion. We also explore the possibility of observing a current when the temperature of the two baths are different, and also envisage that our system may act as a Carnot engine even when the bath temperatures are the same. The condition for such a construction has been elucidated.

Steering Bose-Einstein condensates despite time symmetry

A Bose-Einstein condensate in an oscillating spatially asymmetric potential is shown to exhibit a directed current for unbiased initial conditions despite time symmetry. This phenomenon occurs only if the interaction between atoms, treated in mean-field approximation, exceeds a critical value. Our findings can be described with a three-mode model. These three-mode model results corroborate well with a many-body study over a time scale which increases with increasing atom number. The duration of this time scale probes the validity of the used mean-field approximation.

Measurement of electronic transport through 1G0 gold contacts under laser irradiation

Metal quantum point contacts (MQPCs) with dimensions comparable to the de Broglie wavelength of conducting electrons reveal ballistic transport of electrons and quantized conductance in units of G(0) = 2e(2)/h. We measure the transport properties of 1G(0) Au contacts under laser irradiation. The observed enhancement of conductance appears to be wavelength-dependent, while thermal effects on conductance are determined to be negligible. For wavelengths that are not absorbed by Au, the results are consistent with a photoassisted transport mechanism in which conductance depends both on the electronic structure of the leads and on the interaction of the transporting electrons with oscillating electric fields originating from excitation of local plasmons. For wavelengths absorbed by Au, photoinduced mechanism is suggested to be the dominant transport mechanism. The results demonstrate optical control of ballistic transport in MQPCs and are also important for future interpretation of light effects on the conductance of single-molecule junctions.

Dynamics of matter-wave solitons in a ratchet potential

We study the dynamics of bright solitons formed in a Bose-Einstein condensate with attractive atomic interactions perturbed by a weak bichromatic optical lattice potential. The lattice depth is a biperiodic function of time with a zero mean, which realizes a flashing ratchet for matter-wave solitons. We find that the average velocity of a soliton and the soliton current induced by the ratchet depend on the number of atoms in the soliton. As a consequence, soliton transport can be induced through scattering of different solitons. In the regime when matter-wave solitons are narrow compared to the lattice period the dynamics is well described by the effective Hamiltonian theory.

Controlling the ratchet effect for cold atoms

Low-order quantum resonances manifested by directed currents have been realized with cold atoms. Here we show that by increasing the strength of an experimentally achievable delta-kicking ratchet potential, quantum resonances of a very high order may naturally emerge and can induce larger ratchet currents than low-order resonances, with the underlying classical limit being fully chaotic. The results offer a means of controlling quantum transport of cold atoms.

Quantum control and entanglement using periodic driving fields

We propose a scheme for producing directed motion in a lattice system by applying a periodic driving potential. By controlling the dynamics by means of the effect known as coherent destruction of tunneling, we demonstrate a novel ratchetlike effect that enables particles to be coherently manipulated and steered without requiring local control. Entanglement between particles can also be controllably generated, which points to the attractive possibility of using this technique for quantum information processing.

Nonlinear signal mixing in a three-terminal molecular wire

The authors study the electronic response of two simple molecular devices to a bichromatic field, where the device acts as a mixer. Two closely related model systems are considered: one is a benzene molecule and the other is a single grapheme sheet, and in both cases the systems are connected to three polyacetylene chains. The electronic response to the dichromatic alternating electric fields is studied by following the electron density fluctuation along the chain lengths. In both cases the electron transfer follows the field frequency at low electric fields. At higher amplitude, a significant amount of nonlinear mixing resulting in new combinations of the input frequencies is found in the spectrum. The influence of gating on the output frequencies is also shown.

Generic quantum ratchet accelerator with full classical chaos

A simple model of quantum ratchet transport that can generate unbounded linear acceleration of the quantum ratchet current is proposed, with the underlying classical dynamics fully chaotic. The results demonstrate that generic quantum ratchet transport can occur with any type of classical phase space structure. The quantum ratchet transport with full classical chaos is also shown to be very robust to noise due to the large linear acceleration afforded by the quantum dynamics. One possible experiment allowing observation of these predictions is suggested.

The influence of ultrafast laser pulses on electron transfer in molecular wires studied by a non-Markovian density-matrix approach

New features of molecular wires can be observed when they are irradiated by laser fields. These effects can be achieved by periodically oscillating fields but also by short laser pulses. The theoretical foundation used for these investigations is a density-matrix formalism where the full system is partitioned into a relevant part and a thermal fermionic bath. The derivation of a quantum master equation, either based on a time-convolutionless or time-convolution projection-operator approach, incorporates the interaction with time-dependent laser fields nonperturbatively and is valid at low temperatures for weak system-bath coupling. From the population dynamics the electrical current through the molecular wire is determined. This theory including further extensions is used for the determination of electron transport through molecular wires. As examples, we show computations of coherent destruction of tunneling in asymmetric periodically driven quantum systems, alternating currents and the suppression of the directed current by using a short laser pulse.

Performance characteristics of Brownian motors

Brownian motors are nonequilibrium systems that rectify thermal fluctuations to achieve directed motion, using spatial or temporal asymmetry. We provide a tutorial introduction to this basic concept using the well-known example of a flashing ratchet, discussing the micro- to nanoscopic scale on which such motors can operate. Because of the crucial role of thermal noise, the characterization of the performance of Brownian motors must include their fluctuations, and we review suitable performance measures for motor coherency and efficiency. Specifically, we highlight that it is possible to determine the energy efficiency of Brownian motors by measuring their velocity fluctuations, without detailed knowledge of the motor function and its energy input. Finally, we exemplify these concepts using a model for an artificial single-molecule motor with internal degrees of freedom.

Rectification in Luttinger liquids

We investigate the rectification of an ac bias in Luttinger liquids in the presence of an asymmetric potential (the ratchet effect). We show that a strong repulsive electron interaction enhances the ratchet current in comparison with Fermi-liquid systems, and the dc I-V curve is strongly asymmetric in the low-voltage regime even for a weak asymmetric potential. At higher voltages the ratchet current exhibits an oscillatory voltage dependence.

Ratchet effect for cold atoms in an optical lattice

The possibility of realizing a directed current for a quantum particle in a flashing asymmetric potential is investigated. It is found that quantum resonances, where the value of the effective Planck constant is equal to an integer or half-integer multiple of pi, give rise to a directed current. The effect should be readily observable in experiments.

Photoconductivity and current producing states in molecular semiconductors

We present a methodology for computing photocurrent production in molecular semiconducting molecules. Our model combines a single-configuration interaction picture with the nonequilibrium Green's function approach to compute the current response of a molecular semiconducting wire following excitation. We give detailed analysis of the essential excitonic, charge transfer, and dipole states for poly-(phenylenevinylene) chains of length 32 and 48 repeat units under an electric field bias and use this to develop a reduced dimensional tunneling model which accounts for chain-length and field-dependent behavior. In this paper, we consider the decay of an excited electron/hole state on a molecular wire under bias attached to semiconducting leads at either end. We find that the current produced by the decay of an excitation depends not only upon the lifetime of the state, as given by the imaginary part of its complex eigenvalue, but also upon the net charge on terminal ends of the molecule. We also find that weakly bound electron/hole charge-transfer pairs can decay into the continuum via field induced tunneling and produce a net current whereas excitonic states decay via tunneling but give no net current contribution.

A Liouville equation for systems which exchange particles with reservoirs: Transport through a nanodevice

A Redfield-like Liouville equation for an open system that couples to one or more leads and exchanges particles with them is derived. The equation is presented for a general case. A case study of time-dependent transport through a single quantum level for varying electrostatic and chemical potentials in the leads is presented. For the case of varying electrostatic potentials the proposed equation yields, for the model study, the results of an exact solution.

Duality relation for quantum ratchets

A duality relation between the long-time dynamics of a quantum Brownian particle in a tilted ratchet potential and a driven dissipative tight-binding model is reported. It relates a situation of weak dissipation in one model to strong dissipation in the other one, and vice versa. We apply this duality relation to investigate transport and rectification in ratchet potentials: From the linear mobility we infer ground-state delocalization for weak dissipation. We report reversals induced by adiabatic driving and temperature in the ratchet current and its dependence on the potential shape.

Consistent description of quantum Brownian motors operating at strong friction

A quantum Smoluchowski equation is put forward that consistently describes thermal quantum states. In particular, it notably does not induce a violation of the second law of thermodynamics. This so modified kinetic equation is applied to study analytically directed quantum transport at strong friction in arbitrarily shaped ratchet potentials that are driven by nonthermal two-state noise. Depending on the mutual interplay of quantum tunneling and quantum reflection these quantum corrections can induce both, a sizable enhancement or a suppression of transport. Moreover, the threshold for current reversals becomes markedly shifted due to such quantum fluctuations.

Vibrational effects in laser-driven molecular wires

The influence of an electron-vibrational coupling on the laser control of electron transport through a molecular wire that is attached to several electronic leads is investigated. These molecular vibrational modes induce an effective electron-electron interaction. In the regime where the wire electrons couple weakly to both the external leads and the vibrational modes, we derive within a Hartree-Fock approximation a nonlinear set of quantum kinetic equations. The quantum kinetic theory is then used to evaluate the laser driven, time-averaged electron current through the wire-leads contacts. This formalism is applied to two archetypical situations in the presence of electron-vibrational effects, namely, (i) the generation of a ratchet or pump current in a symmetrical molecule by a harmonic mixing field and (ii) the laser switching of the current through the molecule.

Ab initiostudy of the alternating current impedance of a molecular junction

The small-bias conductance of the C6 molecule, stretched between two metallic leads, is studied using time-dependent density functional theory within the adiabatic local density approximation. The leads are modeled by jellium slabs, the electronic density and the current density are described on a grid, whereas the core electrons and the highly oscillating valence orbitals are approximated using standard norm-conserving pseudopotentials. The jellium leads are supplemented by a complex absorbing potential that serves to absorb charge reaching the edge of the electrodes and hence mimic irreversible flow into the macroscopic metal. The system is rapidly exposed to a ramp potential directed along the C6 axis, which gives rise to the onset of charge and current oscillations. As time progresses, a fast redistribution of the molecular charge is observed, which translates into a direct current response. Accompanying the dc signal, alternating current fluctuations of charge and currents within the molecule and the metallic leads are observed. These form the complex impedance of the molecule and are especially strong at the plasmon frequency of the leads and the lowest excitation peak of C6. We study the molecular conductance in two limits: the strong coupling limit, where the edge atoms of the chain are submerged in the jellium and the weak coupling case, where the carbon atoms and the leads do not overlap spatially.

Current noise in ac-driven nanoscale conductors

The theory for current fluctuations in ac-driven transport through nanoscale systems is put forward. By use of a generalized, non-Hermitian Floquet theory we derive novel explicit expressions for the time-averaged current and the zero-frequency component of the power spectrum of current fluctuations. A distinct suppression of both the zero-frequency noise and the dc current occurs for suitably tailored ac fields. The relative level of transport noise, being characterized by a Fano factor, can selectively be manipulated by ac sources; in particular, it exhibits both characteristic maxima and minima near current suppression.
