Picosecond view of microscopic-scale polarization clusters in paraelectric BaTiO3

Atomic scale symmetry and polar nanoclusters in the paraelectric phase of ferroelectric materials

The nature of the “forbidden” local- and long-range polar order in nominally non-polar paraelectric phases of ferroelectric materials has been an open question since the discovery of ferroelectricity in oxide perovskites, ABO₃. A currently considered model suggests locally correlated displacements of B-site atoms along a subset of <111> cubic directions. Such off-site displacements have been confirmed experimentally; however, being essentially dynamic in nature they cannot account for the static nature of the symmetry-forbidden polarization implied by the macroscopic experiments. Here, in an atomically resolved study by aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy complemented by Raman spectroscopy, we reveal, directly visualize and quantitatively describe static, 2–4 nm large polar nanoclusters in the nominally non-polar cubic phases of (Ba,Sr)TiO₃ and BaTiO₃. These results have implications on understanding of the atomic-scale structure of disordered materials, the origin of precursor states in ferroelectrics, and may help answering ambiguities on the dynamic-versus-static nature of nano-sized clusters.

The existence and atomic-level structure of the hypothetical polar nanoclusters above the Curie temperature is one of the oldest open questions in the physics of ferroelectrics. Here, the authors find the polar nanoclusters in the paraelectric phases of classical perovskite ferroelectrics.

Defects and Lattice Instability in Doped Lead-Based Perovskite Antiferroelectrics: Revisited

This paper is a summary of earlier results that have been completed with recent investigations on the nature and sequence of phase transitions evolving in the antiferroelectric PbZrO3 single crystals doped with niobium and Pb(Zr0.70Ti0.30)O3 ceramics doped with different concentration of Bi2O3. It was found that these crystals undergo new phase transitions never observed before. To investigate all phase transitions, different experimental methods were used to characterize the crystal properties. Temperature and time dependencies have been tentatively measured in a wide range, including a region above Tc, where precursor dynamics is observed in the form of non-centrosymmetric regions existing locally in crystal lattices. Also, coexistence of antiferroelectric phase and one of the intermediate phases could be observed in a wide temperature range. The phase transition mechanism in PbZrO3 is discussed, taking into account the local breaking of the crystal symmetry above Tc and the defects of crystal lattices, i.e., those generated during crystal growth, and intentionally introduced by preheating in a vacuum or doping with hetero-valent dopant.

Dynamic Displacement Disorder of Cubic BaTiO_{3}

The three-dimensional distribution of the x-ray diffuse scattering intensity of BaTiO_{3} has been recorded in a synchrotron experiment and simultaneously computed using molecular dynamics simulations of a shell model. Together, these have allowed the details of the disorder in paraelectric BaTiO_{3} to be clarified. The narrow sheets of diffuse scattering, related to the famous anisotropic longitudinal correlations of Ti ions, are shown to be caused by the overdamped anharmonic soft phonon branch. This finding demonstrates that the occurrence of narrow sheets of diffuse scattering agrees with a displacive picture of the cubic phase of this textbook ferroelectric material. The presented methodology allows one to go beyond the harmonic approximation in the analysis of phonons and phonon-related scattering.

The polarizability model for ferroelectricity in perovskite oxides

This article reviews the polarizability model and its applications to ferroelectric perovskite oxides. The motivation for the introduction of the model is discussed and nonlinear oxygen ion polarizability effects and their lattice dynamical implementation outlined. While a large part of this work is dedicated to results obtained within the self-consistent-phonon approximation, nonlinear solutions of the model are also handled, which are of interest to the physics of relaxor ferroelectrics, domain wall motions, and incommensurate phase transitions. The main emphasis is to compare the results of the model with experimental data and to predict novel phenomena.

Correlations and local order parameter in the paraelectric phase of barium titanate

General features of the order parameter distribution in barium titanate in its paraelectric phase and in its ferroelectric phases (tetragonal and orthorhombic) are presented. The density of probability of the polarization [Formula: see text], defined by an average of the local order parameters over regions of various sizes and shapes (L(x) × L(y) × L(z)), is examined by molecular dynamics simulations using a first-principles derived effective Hamiltonian. The free energies [Formula: see text] associated with these probabilities are computed by thermodynamic integration. The evolution of these quantities are explained through the computation of pair correlations, which are found, as stated in several previous works, very anisotropic, 'needle-like', with longitudinal correlations ([Formula: see text]) having much longer range than transverse ones ([Formula: see text]). The correlations explain why the density of probability of the order parameter evolves from a multiple-peaked distribution with maxima along [111] (in the single cell), along [100] for small needle-like regions, towards a single-peaked distribution for larger regions. A useful expression in which the shape-dependence of the free energy is manifest is provided.

Sound velocities and hypersonic dampings of Pb[(Mg1/3Nb2/3)0.45Ti0.55]O3 single crystals studied by Brillouin light scattering

A Brillouin spectroscopic investigation was carried out on PMN-55%PT single crystals, which are known to have no chemically ordered regions and undergo a well-defined structural phase transition at T(C) ∼ 521 K. The longitudinal and transverse sound velocities probed on a right-angle scattering geometry exhibited a remarkable softening and increasing hypersonic damping on approaching T(C) from T(B) ∼ 610 K that was characterized by the deviation of the dielectric permittivity from the high-temperature Curie-Weiss behavior. The acoustic anomalies of the longitudinal acoustic mode at the backward scattering were more substantial than those observed at the right-angle scattering, which could be understood in the framework of normal acoustic dispersion considering the difference in the acoustic frequency. The softening of the transverse sound velocity was more significant than that of the longitudinal one upon cooling toward T(C), suggesting that this acoustic anomaly may be related to the local rhombohedral transformation, occurring in polar nano-regions (PNRs). The observed acoustic behaviors combined with the central peak dynamics clearly indicated the existence of dynamic polar nano-regions in PMN-55%PT where there are no chemically ordered regions, and seem to suggest that the order parameter fluctuations due to two kinds of coupling contribute to the acoustic anomalies in the temperature range of T(C) ∼ T(B): electrostrictive coupling between the acoustic waves and the dynamic PNRs, and linear coupling between the acoustic waves and the precursor polar clusters, i.e., the ordering unit responsible for the order-disorder-type slowing down behavior probed by the central peak.

Analysis of polarization behavior in relaxation of BaTiO₃-based ferroelectrics using wideband dielectric spectroscopy

Wideband dielectric spectra from the kilohertz to terahertz range are discussed for BaTiO₃-based ferroelectrics. Ceramics of BaTiO₃ (BT), Ba(0.6)Sr(0.4)TiO₃ (BST-0.6), and BaZr(0.25)Ti(0.75)O₃ (BZT-0.25) were selected as normal ferroelectrics, ferroelectrics with diffuse phase transition (DPT ferroelectrics), and relaxor ferroelectrics, respectively. The variation of ionic polarization in both BT and BST-0.6 ceramics with temperature could be explained by the softening of the soft phonon mode. In BZT-0.25, a permittivity anomaly at the dielectric maximum temperature (T(m)) at low frequencies is not attributed to the softening of the soft phonon mode, but originates from the permittivity derived from the dipole polarization (ϵ(dipole)). Relaxor behavior in BZT-0.25 is derived from the increase in the depression of ϵ(dipole) on cooling across the T(m) with increasing frequency. In dipole polarization, BT, BST- 0.6, and BZT-0.25 all exhibited a similar tendency of ϵ(dipole) above the Curie temperature (T(c)) and T(m). However, behavior of ϵ(dipole) below the T(c) can be explained by the ferroelectric domains in BT, whereas the variation of ϵ(dipole) below the Tm could be explained by growth process of polar nanoregions (PNRs) in BST-0.6 and BZT-0.25. Regarding this, BT can be distinguished from BST-0.6 and BZT-0.25. Relaxation in BT could be interpreted as successive change in polarization mechanism from normal ferroelectrics to relaxor ferroelectrics via DPT ferroelectrics.

Precursor polar clusters in the paraelectric phase of ferroelectric Ba₀.₈₀Ca₀.₂₀TiO₃ single crystals studied by Brillouin light scattering

A strong relaxation mode was observed in the gigahertz frequency window in the paraelectric phase of Ba₀.₈₀Ca₀.₂₀TiO₃ single crystals by using Brillouin light scattering. The appearance and growth of this relaxation mode were accompanied by substantial softening of the longitudinal acoustic mode as well as a remarkable increase in the hypersonic damping. Similar to BaTiO₃, the temperature dependence of the relaxation time of Ba₀.₈₀Ca₀.₂₀TiO₃ displayed a slowing-down behavior near the Curie temperature, indicating the order-disorder nature of the paraelectric-ferroelectric phase transition in this substance. The dynamics of precursor polar clusters observed in this work was discussed in relation with recent theoretical studies and found to be consistent with their predictions.

Intensity correlation measurement system by picosecond single shot soft x-ray laser

We developed a new soft x-ray speckle intensity correlation spectroscopy system by use of a single shot high brilliant plasma soft x-ray laser. The plasma soft x-ray laser is characterized by several picoseconds in pulse width, more than 90% special coherence, and 10(11) soft x-ray photons within a single pulse. We developed a Michelson type delay pulse generator using a soft x-ray beam splitter to measure the intensity correlation of x-ray speckles from materials and succeeded in generating double coherent x-ray pulses with picosecond delay times. Moreover, we employed a high-speed soft x-ray streak camera for the picosecond time-resolved measurement of x-ray speckles caused by double coherent x-ray pulse illumination. We performed the x-ray speckle intensity correlation measurements for probing the relaxation phenomena of polarizations in polarization clusters in the paraelectric phase of the ferroelectric material BaTiO(3) near its Curie temperature and verified its performance.

Relaxor Pb(Mg(1/3)Nb(2/3))O3: a ferroelectric with multiple inhomogeneities

Despite intensive studies on Pb(Mg(1/3)Nb(2/3))O(3) (PMN) relaxor, understanding the exact nature of its giant dielectric response and of its physical ground state is a fundamental issue that has remained unresolved for decades. Here, we report a comprehensive study of PMN relaxor crystal, and show that (i) its anomalous dielectric behavior in a broad temperature range results from the reorientation of polarization in the crystal, and (ii) the PMN relaxor is essentially a nanosized ferroelectric material with multiscale inhomogeneities of domain structure in addition to the well-known inhomogeneities of chemical composition and local symmetry. Such inhomogeneities are believed to play a crucial role in producing the huge and enigmatic physical effects in relaxor system, and may be used to design other new systems with giant effects such as a relaxor system.

Direct observation of the critical relaxation of polarization clusters in BaTiO3 using a pulsed x-ray laser technique

We have developed a new method to investigate the relaxation time of the dipole moment in polarization clusters in BaTiO3. Time correlation of speckle intensities was measured by the use of a double pulsed soft x-ray laser. The evolution of the relaxation time of the dipole moment near the Curie temperature (T(C)) was investigated. The maximum relaxation time (approximately 90 ps) is shown to appear at a temperature of 4.5 K above the T(C), being coincident with the one where the maximum polarization takes place. This method is widely applicable to any other critical decay processes at phase transitions.

Coexistence of the phonon and relaxation soft modes in the terahertz dielectric response of tetragonal BaTiO3

The dielectric response to infrared waves polarized along the tetragonal axis of a ferroelectric single-domain crystal of BaTiO3 was determined by time-domain THz spectroscopy and Fourier-transform infrared reflectivity techniques. In addition to the three well-known polar lattice modes, the experiment shows an additional mode of the relaxation type in the THz spectral region, which accounts for the Curie-Weiss behavior of the c-axis dielectric constant. A comparison of experimental results with ab initio based effective-Hamiltonian simulations allows us to elucidate its relation to the order-disorder model of Comes, Lambert, and Guinier [Solid State Commun. 6, 715 (1968)10.1016/0038-1098(68)90571-1].

Enhancement of double auger decay probability in xenon clusters irradiated with a soft-x-ray laser pulse

The interaction of large Xe clusters with a soft x-ray laser pulse having a wavelength of 13.9 nm and an intensity of up to 2x10(10) W/cm2 was investigated using a time-of-flight ion mass spectrometer. The corresponding laser photon energy was sufficiently high to photoionize Xe 4d innershell electrons. It was found that Xe3+ ions (which result from double Auger decay of 4d vacancies) became the dominant final ionic product with increasing cluster size and x-ray intensity. This is in contrast to the results of synchrotron radiation experiments involving free Xe atoms, in which Xe2+ is the dominant resultant ion species. Possible mechanisms responsible for the enhancement of the double Auger transition probability in x-ray laser and cluster interaction are discussed.

Development of a chirped pulse amplification laser with zigzag slab Nd:glass amplifiers dedicated to x-ray laser research

A chirped pulse amplification laser with zigzag slab Nd:glass amplifiers dedicated to x-ray laser research is described. The laser provides a 1.6 ps duration pulse with approximately 7 J energy at a repetition rate of 0.1 Hz. In the power amplifier system, laser light is amplified in a two-step manner: The first step is image-relayed multipass amplification up to approximately 1 J with a 10 mm x 10 mm beam. The second step is double-pass amplification up to >10 J with a 10 mm x 90 mm beam. By using this laser system, the saturated amplification of the Ni-like Ag laser at a wavelength of 13.9 nm has been successfully demonstrated.
