Multiple bosonic mode coupling in the electron self-energy of (La2-xSrx)CuO4

Evidence of strong and mode-selective electron-phonon coupling in the topological superconductor candidate 2M-WS2

The interaction between lattice vibrations and electrons plays a key role in various aspects of condensed matter physics - including electron hydrodynamics, strange metal behavior, and high-temperature superconductivity. In this study, we present systematic investigations using Raman scattering and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) to examine the phononic and electronic subsystems of the topological superconductor candidate 2M-WS2. Raman scattering exhibits an anomalous nonmonotonic temperature dependence of phonon linewidths, indicative of strong phonon-electron scattering over phonon-phonon scattering. The ARPES results demonstrate pronounced dispersion anomalies (kinks) at multiple binding energies within both bulk and topological surface states, indicating a robust and mode-selective coupling between the electronic states and various phonon modes. These experimental findings align with previous calculations of the Eliashberg function, providing a deeper understanding of the highest superconducting transition temperature observed in 2M-WS2 (8.8 K) among all transition metal dichalcogenides as induced by electron-phonon coupling. Furthermore, our results may offer valuable insights into other properties of 2M-WS2 and guide the search for high-temperature topological superconductors.

Antiferromagnetism Induced by Bond Su-Schrieffer-Heeger Electron-Phonon Coupling: A Quantum Monte Carlo Study

Antiferromagnetism (AFM) such as Néel ordering is often closely related to Coulomb interactions such as Hubbard repulsion in two-dimensional (2D) systems. Whether Néel AFM ordering in two dimensions can be dominantly induced by electron-phonon couplings (EPC) has not been completely understood. Here, by employing numerically exact sign-problem-free quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations, we show that bond Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) phonons with frequency ω and EPC constant λ can induce AFM ordering for a wide range of phonon frequency ω>ω_{c}. For ω<ω_{c}, a valence-bond-solid (VBS) order appears and there is a direct quantum phase transition between VBS and AFM phases at ω_{c}. The phonon mechanism of the AFM ordering is related to the fact that SSH phonons directly couple to electron hopping whose second-order process can induce an effective AFM spin exchange. Our results shall shed new light on understanding AFM ordering in correlated quantum materials.

Fermi blockade of the strong electron-phonon interaction in modelled optimally doped high temperature superconductors

We study how manifestations of strong electron-phonon interaction depend on the carrier concentration by solving the two-dimensional Holstein model for the spin-polarized fermions using an approximation free bold-line diagrammatic Monte Carlo method. We show that the strong electron-phonon interaction, obviously present at very small Fermion concentration, is masked by the Fermi blockade effects and Migdal's theorem to the extent that it manifests itself as moderate one at large carriers densities. Suppression of strong electron-phonon interaction fingerprints is in agreement with experimental observations in doped high temperature superconductors.

Unmasking the Origin of Kinks in the Photoemission Spectra of Cuprate Superconductors

The origin of a ubiquitous bosonic coupling feature in the photoemission spectra of high-T_{c} cuprates, an energy-momentum dispersion "kink" observed at ∼70  meV binding energy, remains a two-decade-old mystery. Understanding this phenomenon requires an accurate description of the coupling between the electron and some collective modes. We report here ab initio calculations based on GW perturbation theory and show that correlation-enhanced electron-phonon interaction in cuprates gives rise to the strong kinks, which not only explains quantitatively the observations but provides new understanding of experiments. Our results reveal it is the electron density of states being the predominant factor in determining the doping dependence of the kink size, manifesting the multiband nature of the cuprates, as opposed to the prevalent belief of it being a measure of the mode-coupling strength.

Fermion-boson many-body interplay in a frustrated kagome paramagnet

Kagome-nets, appearing in electronic, photonic and cold-atom systems, host frustrated fermionic and bosonic excitations. However, it is rare to find a system to study their fermion-boson many-body interplay. Here we use state-of-the-art scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy to discover unusual electronic coupling to flat-band phonons in a layered kagome paramagnet, CoSn. We image the kagome structure with unprecedented atomic resolution and observe the striking bosonic mode interacting with dispersive kagome electrons near the Fermi surface. At this mode energy, the fermionic quasi-particle dispersion exhibits a pronounced renormalization, signaling a giant coupling to bosons. Through the self-energy analysis, first-principles calculation, and a lattice vibration model, we present evidence that this mode arises from the geometrically frustrated phonon flat-band, which is the lattice bosonic analog of the kagome electron flat-band. Our findings provide the first example of kagome bosonic mode (flat-band phonon) in electronic excitations and its strong interaction with fermionic degrees of freedom in kagome-net materials.

Experimental Determination of Momentum-Resolved Electron-Phonon Coupling

We provide a novel experimental method to quantitatively estimate the electron-phonon coupling and its momentum dependence from resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra based on the detuning of the incident photon energy away from an absorption resonance. We apply it to the cuprate parent compound NdBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6} and find that the electronic coupling to the oxygen half-breathing phonon branch is strongest at the Brillouin zone boundary, where it amounts to ∼0.17  eV, in agreement with previous studies. In principle, this method is applicable to any absorption resonance suitable for RIXS measurements and will help to define the contribution of lattice vibrations to the peculiar properties of quantum materials.

Mode-Selective Coupling of Coherent Phonons to the Bi2212 Electronic Band Structure

Cuprate superconductors host a multitude of low-energy optical phonons. Using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we study coherent phonons in Bi_{2}Sr_{2}Ca_{0.92}Y_{0.08}Cu_{2}O_{8+δ}. Sub-meV modulations of the electronic band structure are observed at frequencies of 3.94±0.01 and 5.59±0.06  THz. For the dominant mode at 3.94 THz, the amplitude of the band energy oscillation weakly increases as a function of momentum away from the node. Theoretical calculations allow identifying the observed modes as CuO_{2}-derived A_{1g} phonons. The Bi- and Sr-derived A_{1g} modes which dominate Raman spectra in the relevant frequency range are absent in our measurements. This highlights the mode selectivity for phonons coupled to the near-Fermi-level electrons, which originate from CuO_{2} planes and dictate thermodynamic properties.

Apical Charge Flux-Modulated In-Plane Transport Properties of Cuprate Superconductors

For copper-based superconductors, the maximum superconducting transition temperature T_{c,max} of different families measured from experiment can vary from 38 K in La_{2}CuO_{4} to 135 K in HgBa_{2}Ca_{2}Cu_{3}O_{8} at the optimal hole doping concentration. We demonstrate herein, using ab initio computations, a new trend suggesting that the cuprates with stronger out-of-CuO_{2}-plane chemical bonding between the apical anion (O, Cl) and apical cation (e.g., La, Hg, Bi, Tl) are generally correlated with higher T_{c,max} in experiments. We then show the underlying fundamental phenomena of coupled apical charge flux and lattice dynamics when the apical oxygen oscillates vertically. This triggers the charge flux among the apical cation, apical anion, and the in-plane CuO_{4} unit. The effect not only dynamically modulates the site energy of the hole at a given Cu site to control the in-plane charge transfer energy, but also can modulate the in-plane hole hopping integral simultaneously in a dynamic way by the cooperative apical charge fluxes.

Nanoscale determination of the mass enhancement factor in the lightly doped bulk insulator lead selenide

Bismuth chalcogenides and lead telluride/selenide alloys exhibit exceptional thermoelectric properties that could be harnessed for power generation and device applications. Since phonons play a significant role in achieving these desired properties, quantifying the interaction between phonons and electrons, which is encoded in the Eliashberg function of a material, is of immense importance. However, its precise extraction has in part been limited due to the lack of local experimental probes. Here we construct a method to directly extract the Eliashberg function using Landau level spectroscopy, and demonstrate its applicability to lightly doped thermoelectric bulk insulator PbSe. In addition to its high energy resolution only limited by thermal broadening, this novel experimental method could be used to detect variations in mass enhancement factor at the nanoscale level. This opens up a new pathway for investigating the local effects of doping and strain on the mass enhancement factor.

Electron–phonon coupling influences the thermal and electronic properties of many solid materials. Zeljkovic et al. now combine Landau level spectroscopy and scanning tunnelling microscopy to extract quantitative information on electron–phonon coupling in the insulator lead selenide.

Pseudogap in cuprates driven by D-wave flux-phase order proximity effects: a theoretical analysis from Raman and ARPES experiments

One of the puzzling characteristics of the pseudogap phase of high-Tc cuprates is the nodal-antinodal dichotomy. While the nodal quasiparticles have a Fermi liquid behaviour, the antinodal ones show non-Fermi liquid features and an associated pseudogap. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and electronic Raman scattering are two valuable tools which have shown universal features which are rather material-independent, and presumably intrinsic to the pseudogap phase. The doping and temperature dependence of the Fermi arcs and the pseudogap observed by photoemission near the antinode correlates with the non-Fermi liquid behaviour observed by Raman for the B(1g) mode. In contrast, and similar to the nodal quasiparticles detected by photoemission, the Raman B(2g) mode shows Fermi liquid features. We show that these two experiments can be analysed, in the context of the t-J model, by self-energy effects in the proximity to a D-wave flux-phase order instability. This approach supports a crossover origin for the pseudogap, and a scenario of two competing phases. The B(2g) mode shows, in an underdoped case, a depletion at intermediate energy which has attracted renewed interest. We study this depletion and discuss its origin and relation with the pseudogap.

Superconducting pairing and the pseudogap in the nematic dynamical stripe phase of La2-xSrxCuO4

Fully absorption coefficient corrected Raman spectra were obtained in La2-xSrxCuO4. The B1g spectra have a Fleury-Loudon type two-magnon peak (resonant term) whose energy decreases from 3180 cm(-1) (394 meV) to 440 cm(-1) (55 meV) on increasing the carrier density from x = 0 to 0.25, while the B2g spectra have a 1000-3500 cm(-1) (124-434 meV) hump (hill) whose lower-edge energy increases from x = 0 to 0.115 and then stays constant to x = 0.25. The B2g hump is assigned to the electronic scattering (non-resonant term) of the spectral function with magnetic self-energy. The completely different carrier density dependence arises from anisotropic magnetic excitations of spin-charge stripes. The B1g spectra were assigned to the sum of k ∥  and k⊥ stripe excitations and the B2g spectra to k⊥ stripe excitations according to the calculation by Seibold and Lorenzana (2006 Phys. Rev. B 73 144515). The k ∥  and k⊥ stripe excitations in fluctuating spin-charge stripes were separately detected for the first time. The appearance of only k⊥ stripe excitations in the electronic scattering arises from the charge hopping perpendicular to the stripe. This is the same direction as the Burgers vector of the edge dislocation in metal. The successive charge hopping in the Burgers vector direction across the charge stripes may cause Cooper pairs as predicted by Zaanen et al (2004 Ann. Phys. 310 181). Indeed, this is supported by the experimental fact that the superconducting coherent length coincides with the inter-charge stripe distance in the wide carrier density range. The one-directional charge hopping perpendicular to the stripe causes the flat Fermi surface and the pseudogap near (π,0) and (0,π), but the states around (π/2,π/2) cannot be produced. The low-energy Raman scattering disclosed that the electronic states at the Fermi arc around (π/2,π/2) are coupled to the A1g soft phonon of the tetragonal-orthorhombic phase transition. This suggests that the Fermi arc is produced by the electron-phonon interaction. All the present Raman data suggest that Cooper pairs are formed at moving edge dislocations of dynamical charge stripes.

'True' bosonic coupling strength in strongly correlated superconductors

Clarifying the coupling between electrons and bosonic excitations (phonons or magnetic fluctuations) that mediate the formation of Cooper pairs is pivotal to understand superconductivity. Such coupling effects are contained in the electron self-energy, which is experimentally accessible via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). However, in unconventional superconductors, identifying the nature of the electron-boson coupling remains elusive partly because of the significant band renormalization due to electron correlation. Until now, to quantify the electron-boson coupling, the self-energy is most often determined by assuming a phenomenological ‘bare’ band. Here, we demonstrate that the conventional procedure underestimates the electron-boson coupling depending on the electron-electron coupling, even if the self-energy appears to be self-consistent via the Kramers-Kronig relation. Our refined method explains well the electron-boson and electron-electron coupling strength in ruthenate superconductor Sr₂RuO₄, calling for a critical revision of the bosonic coupling strength from ARPES self-energy in strongly correlated electron systems.

Anomalous doping variation of the nodal low-energy feature of superconducting (Bi,Pb)2(Sr,La)2CuO(6+δ) crystals revealed by laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

The nodal band dispersion in (Bi,Pb)(2)(Sr,La)(2)CuO(6+δ) (Bi2201) is investigated over a wide range of doping by using 7-eV laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We find that the low-energy band renormalization ("kink"), recently discovered in Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+δ) (Bi2212), also occurs in Bi2201, but at a binding energy around half that in Bi2212. Surprisingly, the coupling energy dramatically increases with a decrease of carrier concentration, showing a sharp enhancement across the optimal doping. These properties (material and doping dependence of the coupling energy) demonstrate the significant correlation among the mode coupling, the energy gap close to the node, and the strong electron correlation. Our results suggest forward scattering arising from the interplay between the electrons and in-plane polarized acoustic phonon branch as the origin of the low-energy renormalization.

Direct determination of the electron-phonon coupling matrix element in a correlated system

High-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy measurements have been carried out on an optimally doped cuprate Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+δ). The momentum-dependent energy and linewidth of an A1 optical phonon were obtained. Based on these data as well as detailed knowledge of the electronic structure, we developed a scheme to determine the electron-phonon coupling (EPC) matrix element related to a specific phonon mode. Such an approach is general and applicable to elucidating the full structure of EPC in a system with anisotropic electronic structure.

Electron-phonon coupling in high-temperature cuprate superconductors determined from electron relaxation rates

We determined electronic relaxation times via pump-probe optical spectroscopy using sub-15 fs pulses for the normal state of two different cuprate superconductors. We show that the primary relaxation process is the electron-phonon interaction and extract a measure of its strength, the second moment of the Eliashberg function λ[ω2] = 800 ± 200 meV2 for La(1.85)Sr(0.15)CuO4 and λ[ω2] = 400 ± 100 meV2 for YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6.5). These values suggest a possible fundamental role of the electron-phonon interaction in the superconducting pairing mechanism.

Energy-dependent enhancement of the electron-coupling spectrum of the underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+δ) superconductor

We have determined the electron-coupling spectrum of superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+δ) from high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectra by two deconvolution-free robust methods. As hole concentration decreases, the coupling spectral weight at low energies ≲15  meV shows a twofold and nearly band-independent enhancement, while that around ∼65  meV increases moderately, and that in ≳130  meV decreases leading to a crossover of dominant coupling excitation between them. Our results suggest the competition among multiple screening effects, and provide important clues to the source of sufficiently strong low-energy coupling, λ(LE)≈1, in an underdoped system.

An electron-boson glue function derived from electronic Raman scattering

Raman scattering cross sections depend on photon polarization. In the cuprates, nodal and antinodal directions are weighted more strongly in B(2g) and B(1g) symmetries, respectively. On the other hand, in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), electronic properties are measured along well-defined directions in momentum space rather than their weighted averages being taken. In contrast, the optical conductivity involves a momentum average over the entire Brillouin zone. Newly measured Raman response data on high-quality Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8 + δ) single crystals up to high energies have been inverted using a modified maximum entropy inversion technique to extract from B(1g) and B(2g) Raman data corresponding electron-boson spectral densities (glue), and these are compared to the results obtained with known ARPES and optical inversions. We find that the B(2g) spectrum agrees qualitatively with nodal direction ARPES while the B(1g) results look more like the optical spectrum. A large peak around 30-40 meV in B(1g) and a much less prominent one in B(2g) are taken as support for the importance of (π, π) scattering at this frequency.

Unusual electronic structure and observation of dispersion kink in CeFeAsO parent compound of FeAs-based superconductors

We report the first comprehensive high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on CeFeAsO, a parent compound of FeAs-based high temperature superconductors with a magnetic-structural transition at ∼150 K. In the magnetic-ordering state, four holelike Fermi surface sheets are observed near Γ(0,0), and the Fermi surface near M(±π,±π) shows a tiny electronlike pocket at M surrounded by four strong spots. The unusual Fermi surface topology deviates strongly from the band structure calculations. The electronic signature of the magnetic-structural transition shows up in the dramatic change of the quasiparticle scattering rate. A dispersion kink at ∼25 meV is observed for the first time in the parent compound of Fe-based superconductors.

Doping-dependent nodal fermi velocity of the high-temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+δ) revealed using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

The improved resolution of laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) allows reliable access to fine structures in the spectrum. We present a systematic, doping-dependent study of a recently discovered low-energy kink in the nodal dispersion of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+δ) (Bi-2212), which demonstrates the ubiquity and robustness of this kink in underdoped Bi-2212. The renormalization of the nodal velocity due to this kink becomes stronger with underdoping, revealing that the nodal Fermi velocity is nonuniversal, in contrast with assumed phenomenology. This is used together with laser ARPES measurements of the gap velocity (v2) to resolve discrepancies with thermal conductivity measurements.

Phonon dispersion and anomalies in one-layer high-temperature superconductors

Phonon dynamics, charge response and the phonon density of states are calculated for the high-temperature superconductors HgBa(2)CuO(4) and Bi(2)Sr(2)CuO(6) within a microscopic model for the electronic density response. The results are compared with previous calculations for La(2)CuO(4) and Nd(2)CuO(4). Our main focus is on the phonon anomalies which are connected with the high-frequency oxygen bond-stretching modes (OBSM) found before in our calculations for p-doped La(2)CuO(4) and n-doped Nd(2)CuO(4). We investigate the question if the characteristic softening of the OBSM and the related strong coupling to the electrons is also present in HgBa(2)CuO(4) and Bi(2)Sr(2)CuO(6). In particular, the importance of the contribution of the more delocalized Cu 4s state besides the localized Cu 3d state on the softening is investigated and the different anticrossing behavior due to the presence of several phonon modes with the same symmetry as the OBSM is studied. This makes the identification of the anomalies quite complicated. Furthermore, the influence of electronic polarization processes at ions out of the CuO plane in the ionic layers on the phonon dynamics is calculated. In this context the qualitative type of charge response, i.e. the presence or not of possible metallic charge fluctuations at the Hg or Bi ion, respectively, linked via the apex oxygen to the CuO plane, proves to be very sensitive for certain phonon modes. All the calculations are compared to the experimental results available so far. The latter, however, are rather incomplete for the Hg and Bi compounds.

Fine structure in the tunneling spectra of electron-doped cuprates: no coupling to the magnetic resonance mode

We reanalyze high-resolution scanning tunneling spectra of the electron-doped cuprate Pr(0.88)LaCe(0.12)CuO(4) (T(c) = 24 K). We find that the spectral fine structure below 35 meV is consistent with strong coupling to a bosonic mode at about 16 meV, in quantitative agreement with early tunneling spectra of Nd(1.85)Ce(0.15)CuO(4). Since the energy of the bosonic mode is significantly higher than that (9.5-11 meV) of the magnetic resonancelike mode observed by inelastic neutron scattering, the coupling feature at about 16 meV cannot arise from strong coupling to the magnetic mode. The present work thus demonstrates that the magnetic resonancelike mode cannot be the origin of high-temperature superconductivity in electron-doped cuprates.

Unusual layer-dependent charge distribution, collective mode coupling, and superconductivity in multilayer cuprate Ba2Ca3Cu4O8F2

Low energy ultrahigh momentum resolution angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy study on four-layer self-doped high Tc superconductor Ba2Ca3Cu4O8F2 (F0234) revealed fine structure in the band dispersion, identifying the unconventional association of hole and electron doping with the inner and outer CuO2 layers, respectively. For the states originating from two inequivalent CuO2 layers, different energy scales are observed in dispersion kinks associated with the collective mode coupling, with the larger energy scale found in the electron (n-) doped state which also has stronger coupling strength. Given the earlier finding that the superconducting gap is substantially larger along the n-type Fermi surface, our observations connect the mode coupling energy and strength with magnitude of the pairing gap.

Optical spectroscopy of superconducting Ba0.55K0.45Fe2As2: evidence for strong coupling to low-energy bosons

Normal state optical spectroscopy on single crystals of the new iron arsenide superconductor Ba0.55K0.45Fe2As2 shows that the infrared spectrum consists of two major components: a strong metallic Drude band and a well-separated midinfrared absorption centered at 0.7 eV. It is difficult to separate the two components unambiguously but several fits using Lorentzian peaks suggest a model with a Drude peak having a plasma frequency of 1.6 to 2.1 eV and a midinfrared peak with a plasma frequency of 2.5 eV. Detailed analysis of the frequency dependent scattering rate shows that the charge carriers interact with a broad bosonic spectrum extending beyond 100 meV with a very large coupling constant lambda=3.4 at low temperature. As the temperature increases this coupling weakens to lambda=0.78 at ambient temperature. This suggests a bosonic spectrum that is similar to what is seen in the lower Tc cuprates.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy of electron-doped cuprate superconductors: isotropic electron-phonon coupling

We have performed high resolution angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) studies on electron-doped cuprate superconductors Sm2-xCexCuO4 (x=0.10, 0.15, 0.18), Nd2-xCexCuO4 (x=0.15), and Eu2-xCexCuO4 (x=0.15). Imaginary parts of the electron removal self energy show steplike features due to an electron-bosonic mode coupling. The steplike feature is seen along both nodal and antinodal directions but at energies of 50 and 70 meV, respectively, independent of the doping and rare earth element. Such energy scales can be understood as being due to preferential coupling to half- and full-breathing mode phonons, revealing the phononic origin of the kink structures. Estimated electron-phonon coupling constant lambda from the self energy is roughly independent of the doping and momentum. The isotropic nature of lambda is discussed in comparison with the hole-doped case where a strong anisotropy exists.

Momentum dependence of the electron-phonon coupling and self-energy effects in superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 within the local density approximation

Using the local density approximation and a realistic phonon spectrum we determine the momentum and frequency dependence of alpha(2)F(k,omega) in YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7) for the bonding, antibonding, and chain band. The resulting self-energy Sigma is rather small near the Fermi surface. For instance, for the antibonding band the maximum of ReSigma as a function of frequency is about 7 meV at the nodal point in the normal state and the ratio of bare and renormalized Fermi velocities is 1.18. These values are a factor of 3-5 too small compared to the experiment showing that only a small part of Sigma can be attributed to phonons. Furthermore, the frequency dependence of the renormalization factor Z(k,omega) is smooth and has no anomalies at the observed kink frequencies which means that phonons cannot produce well-pronounced kinks in stoichiometric YBa(2)Cu()3)O(7), at least, within the local density approximation.

Bosonic spectral density of epitaxial thin-film La1.83Sr0.17CuO4 superconductors from infrared conductivity measurements

We use optical spectroscopy to investigate the excitations responsible for the structure in the optical self-energy of thin epitaxial films of La(1.83)Sr(0.17)CuO(4). Using Eliashberg's formalism to invert the optical spectra we extract the electron-boson spectral function and find that at low temperature it has a two component structure closely matching the spin excitation spectrum recently measured by magnetic neutron scattering. We contrast the temperature evolution of the spectral density and the two-peak behavior in La(2-Sr(x)CuO(4) with another high temperature superconductor Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+delta). The bosonic spectral functions of the two materials account for the low T(c) of LSCO as compared to Bi-2212.

Identification of a new form of electron coupling in the Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 superconductor by laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

Laser-based angle-resolved photoemission measurements with superhigh resolution have been carried out on an optimally doped Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8) high temperature superconductor. New high energy features at approximately 115 meV and approximately 150 meV, in addition to the prominent approximately 70 meV one, are found to develop in the nodal electron self-energy in the superconducting state. These high energy features, which cannot be attributed to electron coupling with single phonon or magnetic resonance mode, point to the existence of a new form of electron coupling in high temperature superconductors.

Development of a vacuum ultraviolet laser-based angle-resolved photoemission system with a superhigh energy resolution better than 1 meV

The design and performance of the first vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) laser-based angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) system are described. The VUV laser with a photon energy of 6.994 eV and bandwidth of 0.26 meV is achieved from the second harmonic generation using a novel nonlinear optical crystal KBe2BO3F2. The new VUV laser-based ARPES system exhibits superior performance, including superhigh energy resolution better than 1 meV, high momentum resolution, superhigh photon flux, and much enhanced bulk sensitivity, which are demonstrated from measurements on a typical Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 high temperature superconductor. Issues and further development related to the VUV laser-based photoemission technique are discussed.

Temperature dependence of the angle resolved photoemission spectra in the undoped cuprates: self-consistent approach to the t-J Holstein model

We develop a novel self-consistent approach for studying the angle resolved photoemission spectra (ARPES) of a hole in the t-J Holstein model giving perfect agreement with numerically exact diagrammatic Monte Carlo (DMC) data at zero temperature for all regimes of electron-phonon coupling. Generalizing the approach to finite temperatures, we find that the anomalous temperature dependence of the ARPES in undoped cuprates is explained by cooperative interplay of coupling of the hole to magnetic fluctuations and strong electron-phonon interaction.

High energy scales in the optical self-energy of the cuprate superconductors

Using optical spectroscopy with a derivative technique, we find for the high Tc cuprate Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta (Bi-2212) evidence for a new high energy scale at 900 meV beyond the two previously well-known ones at roughly 50 and 400 meV. The intermediate scale at 400 meV has recently been seen in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments along the nodal direction as a large kink. In YBa2Cu3O6.50, the three energy scales are shifted to lower energy relative to Bi-2212 and we observe the emergence of a possible new high energy feature at 600 meV.

High-energy scale revival and giant kink in the dispersion of a cuprate superconductor

In the present photoemission study of a cuprate superconductor Bi1.74Pb0.38Sr1.88CuO6+delta, we discovered a large scale dispersion of the lowest band, which unexpectedly follows the band structure calculation very well. Similar behavior observed in blue bronze and the Mott insulator Ca2CuO2Cl2 suggests that the origin of hopping-dominated dispersion in an overdoped cuprate might be quite complicated. A giant kink in the dispersion is observed, and the complete self-energy containing all interaction information is extracted for a doped cuprate. These results recovered significant missing pieces in our current understanding of the electronic structure of cuprates.

Constituents of the quasiparticle spectrum along the nodal direction of high-Tc cuprates

Applying the Kramers-Kronig consistent procedure, developed earlier, we investigate in detail the formation of the quasiparticle spectrum along the nodal direction of high-Tc cuprates. The heavily discussed "70 meV kink" on the renormalized dispersion exhibits a strong temperature and doping dependence when purified from structural effects such as bilayer splitting, diffraction replicas, etc. This dependence is well understood in terms of fermionic and bosonic constituents of the self-energy. The latter follows the evolution of the spin-fluctuation spectrum, emerging below some doping dependent temperature and sharpening below Tc, and is mainly responsible for the formation of the kink in question.

Doping dependence of the coupling of electrons to bosonic modes in the single-layer high-temperature Bi2Sr2CuO6 superconductor

A recent highlight in the study of high-T(c) superconductors is the observation of band renormalization or self-energy effects on the quasiparticles. This is seen in the form of kinks in the quasiparticle dispersions as measured by photoemission and interpreted as signatures of collective bosonic modes coupling to the electrons. Here we compare for the first time the self-energies in an optimally doped and strongly overdoped, nonsuperconducting single-layer Bi-cuprate (Bi2Sr2CuO6). In addition to the appearance of a strong overall weakening, we also find that the weight of the self-energy in the overdoped system shifts to higher energies. We present evidence that this is related to a change in the coupling to c-axis phonons due to the rapid change of the c-axis screening in this doping range.

Parity of the pairing bosons in a high-temperature Pb-Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 bilayer superconductor by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We report the observation of a novel effect in the bilayer Pb-Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Pb-Bi2212) high-T(c) superconductor by means of angle-resolved photoemission with circularly polarized excitation. Different scattering rates, determined as a function of energy separately for the bonding and antibonding copper-oxygen bands, strongly imply that the dominating scattering channel is odd with respect to layer exchange within a bilayer. This is inconsistent with a phonon-mediated scattering and favors the participation of the odd collective spin excitations in the scattering mechanism in near-nodal regions of the k space, suggesting a magnetic nature of the pairing mediator.

Polaronic behavior of undoped high-T(c) cuprate superconductors from angle-resolved photoemission spectra

We present angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data on undoped La2CuO4, indicating polaronic coupling between bosons and charge carriers. Using a shell model, we calculate the electron-phonon coupling and find that it is strong enough to give self-trapped polarons. We develop an efficient method for calculating ARPES spectra in undoped systems. Using the calculated couplings, we find the width of the phonon sideband in good agreement with experiment. We analyze reasons for the observed dependence of the width on the binding energy.
