Limits to the polarization for spin-exchange optical pumping of 3He

Investigating Rubidium Density and Temperature Distributions in a High-Throughput 129Xe-Rb Spin-Exchange Optical Pumping Polarizer

Accurate knowledge of the rubidium (Rb) vapor density, [Rb], is necessary to correctly model the spin dynamics of 129Xe-Rb spin-exchange optical pumping (SEOP). Here we present a systematic evaluation of [Rb] within a high-throughput 129Xe-Rb hyperpolarizer during continuous-flow SEOP. Near-infrared (52S1/2→52P1/2 (D1)/52P3/2 (D2)) and violet (52S1/2→62P1/2/62P3/2) atomic absorption spectroscopy was used to measure [Rb] within 3.5 L cylindrical SEOP cells containing different spatial distributions and amounts of Rb metal. We were able to quantify deviation from the Beer-Lambert law at high optical depth for D2 and 62P3/2 absorption by comparison with measurements of the D1 and 62P1/2 absorption lines, respectively. D2 absorption deviates from the Beer-Lambert law at [Rb]D2>4×1017 m−3 whilst 52S1/2→62P3/2 absorption deviates from the Beer-Lambert law at [Rb]6P3/2>(4.16±0.01)×1019 m−3. The measured [Rb] was used to estimate a 129Xe-Rb spin exchange cross section of γ′=(1.2±0.1)×10−21 m3 s−1, consistent with spin-exchange cross sections from the literature. Significant [Rb] heterogeneity was observed in a SEOP cell containing 1 g of Rb localized at the back of the cell. While [Rb] homogeneity was improved for a greater surface area of the Rb source distribution in the cell, or by using a Rb presaturator, the measured [Rb] was consistently lower than that predicted by saturation Rb vapor density curves. Efforts to optimize [Rb] and thermal management within spin polarizer systems are necessary to maximize potential future enhancements of this technology.

^{129}Xe-Rb Spin-Exchange Optical Pumping with High Photon Efficiency

Here we present a Rb-^{129}Xe spin-exchange optical pumping polarizer capable of rapid generation of large volumes of highly polarized ^{129}Xe gas. Through modeling and measurements we maximize the ^{129}Xe nuclear spin polarization output to enable the generation of polarized ^{129}Xe gas imaging volumes (300  cm^{3}) every 5 min within a clinical setting. Our model is verified by experiment to correctly predict the optimum Rb vapor density for maximum ^{129}Xe nuclear polarization for a flux 3.4  W/cm^{2} of circularly polarized Rb D_{1} photons incident on an 80 cm long cylindrical optical cell. We measure a ^{129}Xe magnetization production efficiency of η_{pr}=1.8%, which approaches the photon efficiency limit η_{γ}=3.3% of this system and enables the polarization of 2.72×10^{22} ^{129}Xe spins per hour, corresponding to 1013  cm^{3} of 100% polarized ^{129}Xe at STP. This magnetization production rate is threefold higher than the highest previously published ^{129}Xe magnetization production rate and has enabled routine clinical lung magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with hyperpolarized ^{129}Xe doses available on demand at run time, as well as high-SNR ^{129}Xe MRI of the human brain and kidneys.

Optically polarized 3He

This article reviews the physics and technology of producing large quantities of highly spin-polarized 3He nuclei using spin-exchange (SEOP) and metastability-exchange (MEOP) optical pumping. Both technical developments and deeper understanding of the physical processes involved have led to substantial improvements in the capabilities of both methods. For SEOP, the use of spectrally narrowed lasers and K-Rb mixtures has substantially increased the achievable polarization and polarizing rate. For MEOP nearly lossless compression allows for rapid production of polarized 3He and operation in high magnetic fields has likewise significantly increased the pressure at which this method can be performed, and revealed new phenomena. Both methods have benefitted from development of storage methods that allow for spin-relaxation times of hundreds of hours, and specialized precision methods for polarimetry. SEOP and MEOP are now widely applied for spin-polarized targets, neutron spin filters, magnetic resonance imaging, and precision measurements.

Non-magnetic flexible heaters for spin-exchange optical pumping of 3He and other applications

Spin polarized ³He gas is currently widely used in various scientific fields and in medical diagnosis applications. The spin polarization of ³He nuclei can be achieved by spin-exchange optical pumping (SEOP). In SEOP, the ³He gas is enclosed in a glass cell together with alkali metals and is then heated to maintain the alkali metal vapor pressures at the appropriate levels. However, polarized ³He gas is highly sensitive to any inhomogeneity in its magnetic field, and any small field gradients caused by the heaters may cause degradation of the ³He polarization. To overcome this conflict between the heating process and the magnetic field, we have developed electrical heaters that essentially cause no magnetic fields. These heaters are thin and are flexible enough to be bent to within a radius of a few centimeters. These carefully designed heater elements and a double layer structure effectively eliminate magnetic field generation. The heaters were originally developed for SEOP applications, but can also be applied to other processes that need to avoid unwanted magnetic fields.

High-resolution Spectra in PHIP

This chapter reviews the recent development of an NMR method to obtain information on site selective hyperpolarized samples by Parahydrogen Induced Polarization (PHIP) where the chemical reaction is carried out at high magnetic fields (PASADENA). The method relies on the acquisition of J-spectra in PHIP, which differ from J-spectra for thermally polarized species due to different evolution in the time domain during application of a Carr–Purcell–Meiboom–Gill (CPMG) sequence. PHIP and thermal polarizations give rise to signals which are centered in spectral positions shifted by half of the spectral width, giving rise to two useful results. On one hand, the antiphase character of PASADENA spectra implies a partial peak cancellation, as J-couplings introduce a splitting in the signal of a few Hz. The acquisition of J-spectra renders line width typically of 0.1 Hz, avoiding cancellation. A second aspect to be considered in PHIP is the suppression of antiphase signals due to overlap with ones steaming from thermal polarization at the same frequency. The frequency discrimination of the method enables the detection of hydrogenation even for very low reaction rates. Thus, the method is referred to as Parahydrogen Discriminated PHIP (PhD-PHIP). Simulations of PhD-PHIP with gas phase NMR are presented.

Spin echo small angle neutron scattering using a continuously pumped (3)He neutron polarisation analyser

We present a new instrument for spin echo small angle neutron scattering (SESANS) developed at the Low Energy Neutron Source at Indiana University. A description of the various instrument components is given along with the performance of these components. At the heart of the instrument are a series of resistive coils to encode the neutron trajectory into the neutron polarisation. These are shown to work well over a broad range of neutron wavelengths. Neutron polarisation analysis is accomplished using a continuously operating neutron spin filter polarised by Rb spin-exchange optical pumping of (3)He. We describe the performance of the analyser along with a study of the (3)He polarisation stability and its implications for SESANS measurements. Scattering from silica Stöber particles is investigated and agrees with samples run on similar instruments.

Characterizing and modeling the efficiency limits in large-scale production of hyperpolarized 129Xe

The ability to produce liter volumes of highly spin-polarized 129Xe enables a wide range of investigations, most notably in the fields of materials science and biomedical MRI. However, for nearly all polarizers built to date, both peak 129Xe polarization and the rate at which it is produced fall far below those predicted by the standard model of Rb metal vapor, spin-exchange optical pumping (SEOP). In this work, we comprehensively characterized a high-volume, flow-through 129Xe polarizer using three different SEOP cells with internal volumes of 100, 200 and 300 cc and two types of optical sources: a broad-spectrum 111-W laser (FWHM = 1.92 nm) and a line-narrowed 71-W laser (FWHM = 0.39 nm). By measuring 129Xe polarization as a function of gas flow rate, we extracted peak polarization and polarization production rate across a wide range of laser absorption levels. Peak polarization for all cells consistently remained a factor of 2-3 times lower than predicted at all absorption levels. Moreover, although production rates increased with laser absorption, they did so much more slowly than predicted by the standard theoretical model and basic spin exchange efficiency arguments. Underperformance was most notable in the smallest optical cells. We propose that all these systematic deviations from theory can be explained by invoking the presence of paramagnetic Rb clusters within the vapor. Cluster formation within saturated alkali vapors is well established and their interaction with resonant laser light was recently shown to create plasma-like conditions. Such cluster systems cause both Rb and 129Xe depolarization, as well as excess photon scattering. These effects were incorporated into the SEOP model by assuming that clusters are activated in proportion to excited-state Rb number density and by further estimating physically reasonable values for the nanocluster-induced, velocity-averaged spin-destruction cross-section for Rb (<σcluster-Rbv> ≈4×10-7 cm3s-1), 129Xe relaxation cross-section (<σcluster-Xev> ≈ 4×10-13 cm3s-1), and a non-wavelength-specific, photon-scattering cross-section (σcluster ≈ 1×10-12 cm2). The resulting modified SEOP model now closely matches experimental observations.

Anisotropic hyperfine interactions limit the efficiency of spin-exchange optical pumping of ³He nuclei

We use accurate ab initio and quantum scattering calculations to demonstrate that the maximum ³He spin polarization that can be achieved in spin-exchange collisions with potassium (³⁹K) and silver (¹⁰⁷Ag) atoms is limited by the anisotropic hyperfine interaction. We find that spin exchange in Ag-He collisions occurs much faster than in K-He collisions over a wide range of temperatures (10-600 K). Our analysis indicates that measurements of trap loss rates of ²S atoms in the presence of cold ³He gas may be used to probe anisotropic spin-dependent interactions in atom-He collisions.

Gradient-induced longitudinal relaxation of hyperpolarized noble gases in the fringe fields of superconducting magnets used for magnetic resonance

When hyperpolarized noble gases are brought into the bore of a superconducting magnet for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or spectroscopy studies, the gases must pass through substantial field gradients, which can cause rapid longitudinal relaxation. In this communication, we present a means of calculating this spatially dependent relaxation rate in the fringe field of typical magnets. We then compare these predictions to experimental measurements of (3)He relaxation at various positions near a medium-bore 2-T small animal MRI system. The calculated and measured relaxation rates on the central axis of the magnet agree well and show a maximum (3)He relaxation rate of 3.83×10(-3) s(-1) (T(1)=4.4 min) at a distance of 47 cm from the magnet isocenter. We also show that if this magnet were self-shielded, its minimum T(1) would drop to 1.2 min. In contrast, a typical self-shielded 1.5-T clinical MRI scanner will induce a minimum on-axis T(1) of 12 min. Additionally, we show that the cylindrically symmetric fields of these magnets enable gradient-induced relaxation to be calculated using only knowledge of the on-axis longitudinal field, which can either be measured directly or calculated from a simple field model. Thus, while most MRI magnets employ complex and proprietary current configurations, we show that their fringe fields and the resulting gradient-induced relaxation are well approximated by simple solenoid models. Finally, our modeling also demonstrates that relaxation rates can increase by nearly an order of magnitude at radial distances equivalent to the solenoid radius.

Precision measurement of the n-3He incoherent scattering length using neutron interferometry

We report the first measurement of the low-energy neutron-(3)He incoherent scattering length using neutron interferometry: b_{i};{'} = (-2.512 +/- 0.012 stat +/- 0.014 syst) fm. This is in good agreement with a recent calculation using the AV18 + 3N potential. The neutron-(3)He scattering lengths are important for testing and developing nuclear potential models that include three-nucleon forces, effective field theories for few-body nuclear systems, and neutron scattering measurements of quantum excitations in liquid helium. This work demonstrates the first use of a polarized nuclear target in a neutron interferometer.

Binary-collision-induced longitudinal relaxation in gas-phase 83Kr

Density dependent NMR relaxation measurements of noble gases can provide complementary information to that obtained from relaxation studies of molecular gases. However, conventional noble gas NMR is typically hindered by low sensitivity or prohibitively long relaxation times. In this work, the low sensitivity of (83)Kr (I=92) was overcome by spin exchange optical pumping, and the quadrupolar interaction dominated (83)Kr T(1) times of 40-400 s enabled rapid collection of relaxation data. The density dependence of the (83)Kr longitudinal relaxation in pure krypton was found to be about 1.6 x 10(-3) amagat(-1) s(-1). Experiments were also performed in krypton mixtures containing either helium or nitrogen as a buffer gas. By varying the composition and the density of these mixtures, the density dependence of buffer gas induced relaxation and the relaxation efficiency of (83)Kr-buffer gas collisions were determined. The results from these gas mixtures are compared with those from pure krypton.

Hyperpolarized 83Kr MRI of lungs

Hyperpolarized (hp) (83)Kr (spin I=9/2) is a promising gas-phase contrast agent that displays sensitivity to the surface chemistry, surface-to-volume ratio, and surface temperature of the surrounding environment. This proof-of-principle study demonstrates the feasibility of ex vivo hp (83)Kr magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of lungs using natural abundance krypton gas (11.5% (83)Kr) and excised, but otherwise intact, rat lungs located within a custom designed ventilation chamber. Experiments comparing the (83)Kr MR signal intensity from lungs to that arising from a balloon with no internal structure inflated to the same volume with krypton gas mixture suggest that most of the observed signal originated from the alveoli and not merely the conducting airways. The (83)Kr longitudinal relaxation times in the rat lungs ranged from 0.7 to 3.7s but were reproducible for a given lung. Although the source of these variations was not explored in this work, hp (83)Kr T(1) differences may ultimately lead to a novel form of MRI contrast in lungs. The currently obtained 1200-fold signal enhancement for hp (83)Kr at 9.4T field strength is found to be 180 times below the theoretical upper limit.

Neutron beam effects on spin-exchange-polarized 3He

We have observed depolarization effects when high intensity cold neutron beams are incident on alkali-metal spin-exchange-polarized 3He cells used as neutron spin filters. This was first observed as a reduction of the maximum attainable 3He polarization and was attributed to a decrease of alkali-metal polarization, which led us to directly measure alkali-metal polarization and spin relaxation over a range of neutron fluxes at Los Alamos Neutron Science Center and Institute Laue-Langevin. The data reveal a new alkali-metal spin-relaxation mechanism that approximately scales as sqrt[phi_{n}], where phi_{n} is the neutron capture-flux density incident on the cell. This is consistent with an effect proportional to the concentration of electron-ion pairs but is much larger than expected from earlier work.
