Role of inelastic tunneling through the insulating barrier in scanning-tunneling-microscope experiments on cuprate superconductors

Evidence of a distinct collective mode in Kagome superconductors

The collective modes of the superconducting order parameter fluctuation can provide key insights into the nature of the superconductor. Recently, a family of superconductors has emerged in non-magnetic kagome materials AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs), exhibiting fertile emergent phenomenology. However, the collective behaviors of Cooper pairs have not been studied. Here, we report a distinct collective mode in CsV3-xTaxSb5 using scanning tunneling microscope/spectroscopy. The spectral line-shape is well-described by one isotropic and one anisotropic superconducting gap, and a bosonic mode due to electron-mode coupling. With increasing x, the two gaps move closer in energy, merge into two isotropic gaps of equal amplitude, and then increase synchronously. The mode energy decreases monotonically to well below 2 Δ and survives even after the charge density wave order is suppressed. We propose the interpretation of this collective mode as Leggett mode between different superconducting components or the Bardasis-Schrieffer mode due to a subleading superconducting component.

Bosonic Mode and Impurity-Scattering in Monolayer Fe(Te,Se) High-Temperature Superconductors

The electron pairing mechanism has always been one of the most challenging problems in high-temperature superconductors. Fe(Te,Se), as the superconductor with intrinsic topological property, may host Majorana bound states and has attracted tremendous interest. While in bulk Fe(Te,Se) the pairing mechanism has been experimentally investigated, it remains little understood in its two-dimensional limit counterpart. Here, by in situ scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we show clear evidence of the bosonic mode Ω beyond the superconducting gap Δ in monolayer FeTe_0.5Se_0.5/SrTiO₃(001) high-temperature superconductor. Statistically, Ω shows an obvious anticorrelation with Δ and appears below 2Δ, consistent with the spin-excitation nature. Furthermore, the in-gap bound states induced by two types of magnetically different impurities support the sign-reversing pairing scenario. Our results not only suggest that the spin-excitation-like bosonic mode within a sign-reversing pairing plays an essential role in monolayer FeTe_0.5Se_0.5/SrTiO₃(001) but also offer the crucial information for investigating the high-temperature superconductivity in interfacial iron selenides.

Detection of Bosonic Mode as a Signature of Magnetic Excitation in One-Unit-Cell FeSe on SrTiO3

A "fingerprint" of Cooper pairing mediated by collective bosonic excitation mode is the reconstruction of the quasiparticle-density-of-states (DOS) spectrum with an additional "dip-hump" structure located outside the superconducting coherence peak. Here, we report an in situ scanning tunneling spectroscopy study of one-unit-cell (1-UC) FeSe film on a SrTiO₃(001) substrate. In the quasiparticle-DOS spectrum, the bosonic excitation mode characterized by the dip-hump structure is detected outside the larger superconducting gap. Statistically, the excitation mode shows an anticorrelation with pairing strength in magnitude and yields an energy scale upper-bounded by twice the superconducting gap. The observation coincides with the characteristics of magnetic resonance in cuprates and iron-based superconductors. Furthermore, the local response of superconducting spectra to magnetically distinct Se defects all exhibits the induced in-gap quasiparticle bound states, indicating an unconventional sign-reversing pairing over the Fermi surface in 1-UC FeSe. These results clarify the magnetic nature of the bosonic excitation mode and reveal a signature of electron-magnetic-excitation coupling in 1-UC FeSe/SrTiO₃(001) besides the previously established pairing channel of electron-phonon interaction.

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy of superconducting LiFeAs single crystals: evidence for two nodeless energy gaps and coupling to a bosonic mode

The superconducting compound LiFeAs is studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. A gap map of the unreconstructed surface indicates a high degree of homogeneity in this system. Spectra at 2 K show two nodeless superconducting gaps with Δ(1)=5.3±0.1 meV and Δ(2)=2.5±0.2 meV. The gaps close as the temperature is increased to the bulk T(c), indicating that the surface accurately represents the bulk. A dip-hump structure is observed below T(c) with an energy scale consistent with a magnetic resonance recently reported by inelastic neutron scattering.

Visualizing pair formation on the atomic scale and the search for the mechanism of superconductivity in high-T(c) cuprates

We have developed several new experimental techniques, based on the scanning tunneling microscope, to visualize the process of pair formation on the atomic scale and to probe with high precision what controls the strength of pairing in high-T(c) cuprate superconductor compounds. These new experiments provide evidence that pairing in these exotic superconductors occurs above the bulk transition temperature and in nanoscale regions with sizes of 1-3 nm. The high temperature nucleation and proliferation of these nanoscale puddles have a strong connection to the temperature-doping phase diagram of these superconductors. On average we have found that the pairing gap Δ and the temperature at which they first nucleate T(p) follow the simple relation: 2Δ/k(B)T(p)∼8. Moreover, the variations of the pairing strength on the nanoscale can be examined to find microscopic clues to the mechanism of pairing. Specifically, we have found evidence that suggests that strong electronic correlation, as opposed to coupling of electrons to bosons, is responsible for the pairing mechanism in the cuprates. Surprisingly, we have found that nanoscale measurements of electronic correlations in the normal state (at temperatures as high as twice T(c)) can be used to predict the strength of the local pairing interaction at low temperatures.

Preeminent role of the van Hove singularity in the strong-coupling analysis of scanning tunneling spectroscopy for two-dimensional cuprate superconductors

In two dimensions the noninteracting density of states displays a van Hove singularity (VHS) which introduces an intrinsic electron-hole asymmetry, absent in three dimensions. We show that due to this VHS the strong-coupling analysis of tunneling spectra in high-Tc superconductors must be reconsidered. Based on a microscopic model which reproduces the experimental data with excellent accuracy, we elucidate the peculiar role played by the VHS in shaping the tunneling spectra, and show that more conventional analysis of strong-coupling effects can lead to severe errors.

Isotopic fingerprint of electron-phonon coupling in high-Tc cuprates

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with low-energy tunable photons along the nodal direction of oxygen isotope substituted Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+delta) reveals a distinct oxygen isotope shift near the electron-boson coupling "kink" in the electronic dispersion. The magnitude (a few meV) and direction of the kink shift are as expected due to the measured isotopic shift of phonon frequency, and are also in agreement with theoretical expectations. This demonstrates the participation of the phonons as dominant players, as well as pinpointing the most relevant of the phonon branches.

Convolution effects in superconductive tunneling

The quasiparticle density of states (DOS) of superconductors can be obtained from tunneling spectroscopy. When the normal-state differential conductance varies on the voltage scale comparable to that of strong-coupling effects, the standard normalization rule to extract the DOS is invalid, and the DOS is related to the measured data via an integral equation. These effects are exemplified by studying the geometry effect on the DOS for simple BCS superconductors. We apply these considerations to UPd2Al3 tunnel data where the apparent strong-coupling effects, previously deduced by use of the normalization rule, can be quantitatively attributed to convolution effects.

Scanning-tunnelling spectra of cuprates

The study of bosonic modes that couple to the charge carriers is a key element in understanding superconductivity. Using atomic-resolution scanning-tunnelling microscopy (STM) to extract the spectrum of these modes in the high-temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+delta), Lee et al. find a mode whose frequency does not depend on doping but that changes on isotopic substitution of 16O with 18O. From this, they infer a role for lattice modes (phonons). However, examination of their data reveals a weaker, but distinct, feature that has all the characteristics of the magnetic excitation identified as the bosonic mode in other competing experiments. We therefore suggest that the lattice mode seen by Lee et al. is not relevant to superconductivity and is due to inelastic tunnelling through the insulating oxide layer.

Interplay of electron–lattice interactions and superconductivity in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ

Formation of electron pairs is essential to superconductivity. For conventional superconductors, tunnelling spectroscopy has established that pairing is mediated by bosonic modes (phonons); a peak in the second derivative of tunnel current d2I/dV2 corresponds to each phonon mode. For high-transition-temperature (high-T(c)) superconductivity, however, no boson mediating electron pairing has been identified. One explanation could be that electron pair formation and related electron-boson interactions are heterogeneous at the atomic scale and therefore challenging to characterize. However, with the latest advances in d2I/dV2 spectroscopy using scanning tunnelling microscopy, it has become possible to study bosonic modes directly at the atomic scale. Here we report d2I/dV2 imaging studies of the high-T(c) superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta. We find intense disorder of electron-boson interaction energies at the nanometre scale, along with the expected modulations in d2I/dV2 (refs 9, 10). Changing the density of holes has minimal effects on both the average mode energies and the modulations, indicating that the bosonic modes are unrelated to electronic or magnetic structure. Instead, the modes appear to be local lattice vibrations, as substitution of 18O for 16O throughout the material reduces the average mode energy by approximately 6 per cent--the expected effect of this isotope substitution on lattice vibration frequencies. Significantly, the mode energies are always spatially anticorrelated with the superconducting pairing-gap energies, suggesting an interplay between these lattice vibration modes and the superconductivity.
