Total suppression of superconductivity by high magnetic fields in YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6.6)

Vortex phase diagram and the normal state of cuprates with charge and spin orders

The phase diagram of underdoped cuprates in a magnetic field (H) is key to understanding the anomalous normal state of these high-temperature superconductors. However, the upper critical field (H _c2), the extent of superconducting (SC) phase with vortices, and the role of charge orders at high H remain controversial. Here we study stripe-ordered La-214, i.e., cuprates in which charge orders are most pronounced and zero-field SC transition temperatures T c 0 are lowest. This enables us to explore the vortex phases in a previously inaccessible energy scale window. By combining linear and nonlinear transport techniques sensitive to vortex matter, we determine the T - H phase diagram, directly detect H _c2, and reveal novel properties of the high-field ground state. Our results demonstrate that quantum fluctuations and disorder play a key role as T → 0, while the high-field ground state is likely a metal, not an insulator, due to the presence of stripes.

Fermi liquid behavior of the in-plane resistivity in the pseudogap state of YBa2Cu4O8

Our knowledge of the ground state of underdoped hole-doped cuprates has evolved considerably over the last few years. There is now compelling evidence that, inside the pseudogap phase, charge order breaks translational symmetry leading to a reconstructed Fermi surface made of small pockets. Quantum oscillations [Doiron-Leyraud N, et al. (2007) Nature 447(7144):565-568], optical conductivity [Mirzaei SI, et al. (2013) Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 110(15):5774-5778], and the validity of Wiedemann-Franz law [Grissonnache G, et al. (2016) Phys Rev B 93:064513] point to a Fermi liquid regime at low temperature in the underdoped regime. However, the observation of a quadratic temperature dependence in the electrical resistivity at low temperatures, the hallmark of a Fermi liquid regime, is still missing. Here, we report magnetoresistance measurements in the magnetic-field-induced normal state of underdoped YBa₂Cu₄O₈ that are consistent with a T² resistivity extending down to 1.5 K. The magnitude of the T² coefficient, however, is much smaller than expected for a single pocket of the mass and size observed in quantum oscillations, implying that the reconstructed Fermi surface must consist of at least one additional pocket.

Charge orders, magnetism and pairings in the cuprate superconductors

We review the recent developments in the field of cuprate superconductors with special focus on the recently observed charge order in the underdoped compounds. We introduce new theoretical developments following the study of the antiferromagnetic quantum critical point in two dimensions, in which preemptive orders in both charge and superconducting (SC) sectors emerge, that are in turn related by an SU(2) symmetry. We consider the implications of this proliferation of orders in the underdoped region, and provide a study of the type of fluctuations which characterize the SU(2) symmetry. We identify an intermediate energy scale where the SC fluctuations are dominant and argue that they are unstable towards the formation of a resonant excitonic state at the pseudogap temperature T (*). We discuss the implications of this scenario for a few key experiments.

In-plane magnetoresistance obeys Kohler's rule in the pseudogap phase of cuprate superconductors

We report in-plane resistivity (ρ) and transverse magnetoresistance (MR) measurements for underdoped HgBa(2)CuO(4+δ) (Hg1201). Contrary to the long-standing view that Kohler's rule is strongly violated in underdoped cuprates, we find that it is in fact satisfied in the pseudogap phase of Hg1201. The transverse MR shows a quadratic field dependence, δρ/ρ(0)=aH(2), with a(T)∝T(-4). In combination with the observed ρ∝T(2) dependence, this is consistent with a single Fermi-liquid quasiparticle scattering rate. We show that this behavior is typically masked in cuprates with lower structural symmetry or strong disorder effects.

Emergence of superconductivity from the dynamically heterogeneous insulating state in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO4

A central issue for copper oxides is the nature of the insulating ground state at low carrier densities and the emergence of high-temperature superconductivity from that state with doping. Even though this superconductor-insulator transition (SIT) is a zero-temperature transition, measurements are not usually carried out at low temperatures. Here we use magnetoresistance to probe both the insulating state at very low temperatures and the presence of superconducting fluctuations in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) films, for doping levels that range from the insulator to the superconductor (x  =  0.03-0.08). We observe that the charge glass behaviour, characteristic of the insulating state, is suppressed with doping, but it coexists with superconducting fluctuations that emerge already on the insulating side of the SIT. The unexpected quenching of the superconducting fluctuations by the competing charge order at low temperatures provides a new perspective on the mechanism for the SIT.

Multiorbital effects on the transport and the superconducting fluctuations in LiFeAs

The resistivity, Hall effect, and transverse magnetoresistance have been measured in low residual resistivity single crystals of LiFeAs. A comparison with angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy and quantum oscillation data implies that four carrier bands unevenly contribute to the transport. However the scattering rates of the carriers all display the T(2) behavior expected for a Fermi liquid. Near T(c) low field deviations of the magnetoresistance with respect to a H(2) variation permit us to extract the superconducting fluctuation contribution to the conductivity. Though below T(c) the anisotropy of superconductivity is rather small, the superconducting fluctuation displays a quasi-ideal two-dimensional behavior which persists up to 1.4 T(c). These results call for a refined theoretical understanding of the multiband behavior of superconductivity in this pnictide.

Elucidation of the origins of transport behaviour and quantum oscillations in high temperature superconducting cuprates

A detailed exposition is given of recent transport and 'quantum oscillation' results from high temperature superconducting (HTSC) systems covering the full carrier range from overdoped to underdoped material. This now very extensive and high quality data set is here interpreted within the framework developed by the author of local pairs and boson-fermion resonance, arising in the context of negative- U behaviour within an inhomogeneous electronic environment. The strong inhomogeneity comes with the mixed-valence condition of these materials, which when underdoped lie in close proximity to the Mott-Anderson transition. The observed intense scattering is presented as resulting from pair formation and from electron-boson collisions in the resonant crossover circumstance. The high level of scattering carries the systems to incoherence in the pseudogapped state, p<p(c)(= 0.183). In a high magnetic field the striped partition of the inhomogeneous charge distribution becomes much strengthened and regularized. Magnetization and resistance oscillations, of period dictated by the favoured positioning of the fluxon array within the real space environment of the diagonal 2D charge striping array, are demonstrated to be responsible for the recently reported behaviour hitherto widely attributed to the quantum oscillation response of a much more standard Fermi liquid condition. A detailed analysis embracing all the experimental data serves to reveal that in the given conditions of very high field, low temperature, 2D-striped, underdoped, d-wave superconducting, HTSC material the flux quantum becomes doubled to h/e.

Anomalous criticality in the electrical resistivity of La2-xSrxCuO4

The presence or absence of a quantum critical point and its location in the phase diagram of high-temperature superconductors have been subjects of intense scrutiny. Clear evidence for quantum criticality, particularly in the transport properties, has proved elusive because the important low-temperature region is masked by the onset of superconductivity. We present measurements of the low-temperature in-plane resistivity of several highly doped La2-xSrxCuO4 single crystals in which the superconductivity had been stripped away by using high magnetic fields. In contrast to other quantum critical systems, the resistivity varies linearly with temperature over a wide doping range with a gradient that scales monotonically with the superconducting transition temperature. It is maximal at a critical doping level (pc) approximately 0.19 at which superconductivity is most robust. Moreover, its value at pc corresponds to the onset of quasi-particle incoherence along specific momentum directions, implying that the interaction that first promotes high-temperature superconductivity may ultimately destroy the very quasi-particle states involved in the superconducting pairing.

de Haas-van Alphen oscillations in the underdoped high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O6.5

The de Haas-van Alphen effect was observed in the underdoped cuprate YBa2Cu3O6.5 via a torque technique in pulsed magnetic fields up to 59 T. Above a field of approximately 30 T the magnetization exhibits clear quantum oscillations with a single frequency of 540 T and a cyclotron mass of 1.76 times the free electron mass, in excellent agreement with previously observed Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. The oscillations obey the standard Lifshitz-Kosevich formula of Fermi-liquid theory. This thermodynamic observation of quantum oscillations confirms the existence of a well-defined, closed, and coherent, Fermi surface in the pseudogap phase of cuprates.
