Abstract
Good fundamentals of posture and balance are essential for the efficient performance of both simple daily tasks and more complex movement patterns. In particular, postural balance is the ability to keep the body in equilibrium and to regain balance after the shift of body segments: postural control mechanisms of integration of the visual, vestibular and foot afferential channels contribute to this. This document provides recommendations based on scientific evidence, clinical practice, and consensus between experts concerning the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of postural dysfunction at the three stages of life as the developmental age, adult age, and old age > 65 years and follows the "National Guidelines on Classification and Measuring of Posture and its Dysfunctions" per the Italian Ministry of Health (December 2017). The paper answers four main questions: i) "Which measures can be adopted to prevent postural dysfunctions?" ii) "What can we do in order to make a correct diagnosis of postural dysfunction?" iii) "What are the correct treatment programs for postural dysfunctions?" iv) Which professional competencies and experiences are useful for preventing, diagnosing and treating postural dysfunctions? By the Consensus of the Experts and the scientific evidence, emerge that the approach to postural dysfunctions requires a multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary team. Furthermore, rehabilitation treatment interventions must be specific to the age groups that have been indicated, to consider the integration of the main systems and subsystems of postural control that change with age.

Abstract
Disregarding the widely used division of skull base into anterior and lateral, since the skull base should be conceived as a single anatomic structure, it was to our convenience to group all those approaches that run from the antero-lateral, pure lateral and postero-lateral side of the skull base as “Surgery of the lateral skull base”. “50 years of endeavour” points to the great effort which has been made over the last decades, when more and more difficult surgeries were performed by reducing morbidity. The principle of lateral skull base surgery, “remove skull base bone to approach the base itself and the adjacent sites of the endo-esocranium”, was then combined with function preservation and with tailoring surgery to the pathology. The concept that histology dictates the extent of resection, balancing the intrinsic morbidity of each approach was the object of the first section of the present report. The main surgical approaches were described in the second section and were conceived not as a step-by-step description of technique, but as the highlighthening of the surgical principles. The third section was centered on open issues related to the tumor and its treatment. The topic of vestibular schwannoma was investigated with the current debate on observation, hearing preservation surgery, hearing rehabilitation, radiotherapy and the recent efforts to detect biological markers able to predict tumor growth. Jugular foramen paragangliomas were treated in the frame of radical or partial surgery, radiotherapy, partial “tailored” surgery and observation. Surgery on meningioma was debated from the point of view of the neurosurgeon and of the otologist. Endolymphatic sac tumors and malignant tumors of the external auditory canal were also treated, as well as chordomas, chondrosarcomas and petrous bone cholesteatomas. Finally, the fourth section focused on free-choice topics which were assigned to aknowledged experts. The aim of this work was attempting to report the state of the art of the lateral skull base surgery after 50 years of hard work and, above all, to raise questions on those issues which still need an answer, as to allow progress in knowledge through sharing of various experiences. At the end of the reading, if more doubts remain rather than certainties, the aim of this work will probably be achieved.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim was to evaluate different methods for testing carbapenem susceptibility of Escherichia coli producing KPC-type carbapenemase. METHODS Susceptibility to imipenem, meropenem and ertapenem was assayed using the reference broth microdilution method and several commercial methods (Vitek2, MicroScan, Etest, MIC Test Strip) starting from the same bacterial suspension. Susceptibility to imipenem and meropenem was also tested by Sensititre and disc diffusion (Bio-Rad). Results were interpreted according to EUCAST clinical breakpoints. Essential agreement (EA), category agreement (CA) and error rates were calculated as described by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) guidelines and also considering the new EUCAST definitions. Genotypic diversity of isolates was evaluated with a RAPD profiling protocol. RESULTS Of 54 KPC-positive E. coli isolates, 5.6%, 7.4% and 0% were susceptible standard dosing regimen (S), 55.6%, 72.2% and 0% susceptible increased exposure (I), and 38.9%, 20.4% and 100.0% resistant (R) to imipenem, meropenem and ertapenem, respectively, using the reference broth microdilution method. CA lower than 90% were observed with all systems for imipenem and meropenem using both the ISO and the modified EUCAST criteria. With ertapenem, CA >90% was observed with all methods except Vitek2. RAPD profiling revealed a remarkable genotypic diversity of the isolates, supporting that results were not biased by an oligoclonal nature of the collection. CONCLUSIONS Commercial methods can be unreliable for testing susceptibility to carbapenems of KPC-producing E. coli. Susceptibility should be confirmed by reference broth microdilution.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a common cause of death, representing 29% of the mortality all over the word. Estimates for 2006 show that CVD is one of the world's main cause of death, with 17.1 million death per year. More than 70 million Americans have been diagnosed with various forms of CVD, including high blood pressure, coronary artery disease (acute myocardial infarction and angina pectoris), disorders of peripheral arteries etc. There is strong evidence that periodontal disease (PD) is associated with an increased risk of CVD. In addiction many patients with CVD are also affected by PD, which can be mild or severe. The aim of this manuscript is to investigate the effects of periodontal therapy on the management of CVD. 34 randomised controlled trials and reviews were included in this manuscript to test the effects of different periodontal therapies for patients with CVD. In conclusion, we may affirm that there is some lack of knowledge on relations between PD and CVD, however there is sufficient evidence to justify a periodontal treatment to prevent CVD, in fact PD is very prevalent in middle-aged population and can have a significant impact on the cardiovascular function.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) and periodontal disease (PD) are both chronic diseases. From one side, DM have an adverse effect on PD, and on the other side PD may influence DM. Systemic therapy of DM with glycaemic control, affects the progress of PD. Reversely treatment of PD combined with the administration of systemic antibiotics seems to have a double effect on diabetic patients reducing the periodontal infection and improving the glycaemic control. Inflammation, altered host responses, altered tissue homeostasis are common characteristic of both DM and PD. The potential common pathophysiologic pathways of direct or reverse relationship of DM and PD are still unknown and further in vitro and in vivo studies are needed to explore this relationship.

Abstract
Purpose To present the most frequent occult pathologies unexpectedly encountered via cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT), with particular reference to the diagnostic role of the dentist and that of the radiographer, with a view to clarifying where the diagnostic responsibility lies. Material and methods A narrative literature review on the most diffused occult pathologies under CBCT was conducted, with iconographical guide as an example for each category. Results The most frequent forms of unexpected pathologies encountered are: the presence of foreign bodies, airway anomaly, and the presence of radio-opacity or -transparency in the maxillofacial district. Conclusions The orthodontists must know that they are responsible to recognize these frequent, and potentially serious, pathologies of the head and neck. If the dentist feels unable to take on this responsibility, he or she should, however, be sure to have the scans read by a specialist radiologist.

Abstract
Endocarditis is a cardiovascular disease caused by the inflammation of the inner tissues of the heart, the endocardium, usually of the valves. Bacteraemia is essential in the development of endocarditis, and there are some findings that the main pathogens of endocarditis are viridans group streptococci: Streptococcus oralis, Streptococcus sanguinis, and Enterococcus faecalis. There is strong evidence that endocarditis bacteria are present in the tonsillar microbiota, so that tonsillar infection is associated with an increased risk of endocarditis. The aim of this manuscript is to investigate the presence of the main pathogens of endocarditis in tonsillar microbiota of an Afghan population group. A sample of 80 tonsil swabs were analyzed by quantitative real time PCR to detect endocarditis pathogens and an estimation of the total bacterial load. The median bacterial load in PCR reaction was 1.4x106 (interquartile range 4,7x105 - 2,9x106). Three species, S. Oralis, S. Sanguinis, and E. Faecalis were found in large amounts in all specimens. On the other hand, S. Mitis was never detected. The S. Aureus was found in 3 samples with a prevalence of 0.04 (C.I. 0.01-0.10). The S. Mutans was found in 33 samples with a prevalence of 0.41 (C.I. 0.31-0.52). Endocarditis bacteria has been found into the tonsillar microbiota, so there is sufficient evidence to justify that the oral cavity is a reservoir of endocarditis bacteria that can have a significant impact on the cardiovascular function.

Abstract
In addition to tobacco and alcohol consumption, the two main risk factors for oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), recent studies have revealed infections with human papilloma virus (HPV) as an additional risk factor for OSCC development. In the field of head and neck malignancies, the prevalence of HPV infections in oropharyngeal cancer (OC) ranges in different studies up to 84%. While HPV infection is discussed as an independent risk factor in this region, its distinguished role in carcinogenesis of tumours localized to the oral cavity remains uncertain. A systematic literature search was performed using PubMed, Cochrane library, Science Direct, and the Internet search, with language restricted to English. The search included published studies which dealt with detection methods of HPV-related oral and oropharyngeal cancers and biomolecular studies, particularly regarding the compromising of p53 p16 and e-cadherins. P53 Tumour suppressor protein p53 has several functions that are related to maintaining genomic stability and inhibiting cell proliferation in response to DNA damage. For preventing neoplasia to occur, the most important of these functions are cessation of cell growth and induction of either apoptosis or senescence. P16 is a cellular protein involved in cell cycle regulation. It is a cyclin-dependent kinase 4 (CDK4) inhibitor, and is integral to Rb mediated regulation of G1-S phase of the cell cycle. P16 is expressed at a very low level in normal cell as Rb inhibits transcription of p16. Various detection methods ranging from immunohistochemistry (IHC) to molecular techniques have been used to determine the HPV status of HNSCC. E-cadherin, a 120 kDa Type I classical cadherin, is expressed primarily on epithelial cells. It is found on the surface of keratinocytesand Langerhans cells (LC) and E-cadherin mediated adhesion between these cell types is required for LC retention in the epidermis. It is also an important tumour suppressor protein: its loss or inactivation is associated with epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), a process involving dedifferentiation, infiltration and metastasis of tumours. Oral carcinogenesis is a multi-factorial process involving socioeconomic, environmental and microbial factors leading to multistep changes. Smoking and tobacco exposure seems to modify the survival and recurrence of HPV positive tumours and should be considered in future trials for risk stratification of HPV positive patients. HPV associated oropharynx cancer represents a distinct clinical and biologic entity with many unresolved issues that will be investigated in future translational, clinical research. We need to further explore and understand why the disease occurs predominantly in males, and whether the natural history of oral HPV infection differences in men and women.

Abstract
The aim of this paper is to describe the efficacy of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccines for preventing oral cancer. A systematic review of the literature was conducted to describe the state of the art about HPV vaccines for preventing oral cancer. The aspects of prevention and control of infection by administering vaccines and the diffusion of sexual education campaigns are discussed also. In recent years there has been a growing interest in HPV in dentistry, suggesting a role of such a family of viruses in the development of oral cancers as well as of the uterine cervix. Even if the mass media have increasingly faced the problem, causing frequent alarming among patients, the dentist therefore needs a complete and up-to-date knowledge of this infectious condition that is one of the most common causes of sexually transmitted mucous membrane infections (eg genital, anal and oral). Recent studies about HPV infection are a basic requirement in order to promote the HPV vaccinations and patients health.

Abstract
Some studies have evidenced the role of human polyomaviruses in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. BK, JC and SV40 human polyoma viruses are widely recognized as etiological agents associated with malignancies. The aim of this study was to analyse the prevalence of BK, IC and SV40 in tonsillar microbiota in a group of Afghan volunteers. A sample of the tonsillar microbiota was taken from a single site using a sterile oral swab paper stick. A fixed volume of purified DNA from each sample was tested by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reactions to evaluate the number of human cells and the number of viral genomes in each sample. The cell number was evaluated via the quantification of a single copy genomic sequence, which is located in the HMBS locus. The median analyzed cell number in each reaction was 4343 (interquartile range 2074-8470). SV40 was never detected, while prevalence rate was 0.11 (C.I. 0.06-0.20) for BK and 0.10 (C.I. 0.05-0.19) for JC. Further studies are necessary to clarify whether polyomaviruses can be considered a risk factor of oral, oropharyngeal and laryngeal malignancies.

Abstract
Cancer of the oral cavity is known to have a diverse aetiology that includes infectious agents. Human papilloma virus has been found to be associated with several types of human cancer, inclusive of cervical, vulvar, vaginal, penile, anal, and cancer of tonsil. The aim of this manuscript is to investigate the presence of human papilloma virus in tonsillar microbiota of an Afghan population group. A sample of the tonsillar microbiota was collected by oral swab paper stick from 80 healthy donors. The sample was investigated for the presence of high-risk human papillomavirus types 16, 18, 31 and 45 by real time PCR. Eight samples produced some positive endpoint signals for human papillomaviruses. The human papillomavirus 31 was the unique papillomavirus detected; its calculated prevalence rate was 0.10 (C.I. 0.05-0.19). However, the viral load was always very low, in the order of 10-3 viral genomes per cell. The high prevalence of high-risk human papillomavirus in healthy population suggest a need for further investigation on virus spreading and supports the development of vaccination strategies.

Abstract
The aerosol produced during the use of dental instruments can spread pathogens potentially harmful to health. Most of the pathogens found in hydraulic system are Gram-negative aerobic heterotrophic environmental bacterial species exhibiting very low pathogenicity, although they may be of concern in the treatment of vulnerable patients, such as immunocompromised, medically compromised individuals and dental team. Dental team can be exposed to pathogenic microorganisms including cytomegalovirus, hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, herpes simplex virus and Legionella spp. Legionella spp. are ubiquitous in hydraulic system, in fact surveys have shown that the percentage of samples taken at different dental chairs that were positive for Legionella spp. and ranged from 0 to 100%. The concentration of Legionella spp. in hydraulic system may reach 1000 organisms per ml. The primary route of Legionella spp. transmission is inhalation or aspiration of environmentally contaminated aerosols. All dentists are required to conduct a statutory risk assessment of their hydraulic system, in fact to comply with their legal duties, dentists must identify and assess the sources of risk and prepare a scheme for preventing and controlling risks. Moreover, they must monitor the quality of their hydraulic system at least annually to ensure that they are "legionellae free".

Abstract
Diagnosis of focal disease, the theory that the human oral microbial (HOM) could affect the onset and development of systemic diseases, was very popular in the past, but the lack of scientific evidence has led to the abandonment of this idea. Interestingly, increasing evidence over the past 3 or so decades suggests that HOM can indeed serve as a reservoir for systemic dissemination of pathogenic bacteria and their toxins in distant body sites, favouring the developments of malignant tumours. Malignant tumours are complex communities of oncogenically transformed cells with aberrant genomes, associated non-neoplastic cells including immune and stromal cells, and sometimes HOM, including bacteria and viruses. Recent data suggest that HOM and periodontal disease play an active role in the pathogenesis of colorectal cancer, in fact HOM has been found within the colorectal cancer microenvironment, and the composition of the HOM was different from that of adjacent non-neoplastic tissue. An association of fusobacterium nucleatum with the colonic mucosa of colorectal cancer has been proven. Several questions thus arise. Is periodontal disease a risk factor for colorectal carcinoma? Given the connectivity of the digestive tract, could fusubacterium nucleatum or other HOM be involved in additional gastrointestinal disorders? Furthermore, based on the "mobility" of Fusubacterium nucleatum and the omnipresence of cadherins, could this organism be involved in cancers beyond the gastrointestinal tract? Answers to these questions will shed new lights on the role of the HOM in onset of diseases.

Materials and methods A systematic review of the literature was conducted to describe the state of the art about HPV infection in oropharyngeal mucosa and its modalities of transmission, with particular attention to possible simultaneous infection in multiple anatomic sites. The aspects of prevention and control of infection by administering vaccines and the diffusion of sexual education campaigns are discussed also. Therapeutic protocols are also described where necessary. Results In recent years there has been a growing interest in HPV oral medicine, suggesting a role of such a family of viruses in the development of neoplasms of the oropharyngeal district as well as of the uterine cervix. Even if the mass media have increasingly faced the problem, causing frequent alarming among patients, the dentist therefore needs a complete and up-to-date knowledge of this infectious condition that is one of the most common causes of sexually transmitted mucous membrane infections (e.g. genital, anal and oral). Conclusions Recent studies about HPV infection are a basic requirement in order to promote the health of patients and provide them with the most exhaustive indications from dentists.

Abstract
Periodontal disease (PD) is an inflammatory disease of the tissues supporting the teeth. PD affects 65 million adults over the age of 30 years in the USA, and worldwide 5 to 70% of adults. Women who develop PD during pregnancy, it's estimated 1 woman in 5, may have a higher risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. PD during pregnancy starts by dental plaque and is increased by the action of pregnancy hormones. In order to study the effect of PD on adverse pregnancy outcomes, we have performed this narrative review summarising the current studies about the influence of PD on pregnancy. Periodontal pockets are a reservoir of oral microbiota. Modifications in oral microbiota may be considered as a potential mechanism for developing PD during pregnancy. PD is surely caused by bacteria, but the progression and worsening are due to a host immune response. The inflammation caused by PD is not limited to the oral cavity. It is hypothesized that episodes of bacteraemia and dissemination of endotoxins from periodontal pockets can induce the activation of the systemic immune response. In conclusion our narrative review shows that there's no relationship between PD and adverse pregnancy outcomes, and PD treatment during pregnancy does not confer a general protection against adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine prevalence and risk factors for colonization by multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) in long-term care facility (LTCF) residents in Italy. Genotypes of MDRO isolates were investigated. METHODS A point-prevalence study was conducted at 12 LTCFs located in four Italian cities (2 February to 14 March 2015). Rectal swabs, faeces and nasal/auxiliary swabs were cultured for extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)- and/or carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae, Clostridium difficile and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) respectively. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing, detection of ESBL and/or carbapenemase genes and molecular typing of MDROs were performed. Risk factors for colonization were determined by univariate and multivariate analysis. RESULTS A total of 489 LTCF residents aged ≥65 years were enrolled. The prevalence of colonization by ESBL-producing Enterobacteriaceae, MRSA and C. difficile was 57.3% (279/487), 17.2% (84/487) and 5.1% (21/409) respectively. Carriage rate of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae was 1% (5/487). Being bedridden was a common independent risk factor for colonization by all MDROs, although risk factors specific for each MDRO were identified. ESBL-producing Escherichia coli carriage was associated with the sequence type (ST) 131-H30 subclone, but other minor STs predominated in individual LTCF or in LTCFs located in the same city, suggesting a role for intrafacility or local transmission. Similarly, MRSA from LTCF residents belonged to the same spa types/ST clones (t008/ST8 and t032/ST22) commonly found in Italian acute-care hospitals, but infrequent spa types were recovered in individual LTCFs. The prevalent C. difficile PCR ribotypes were 356/607 and 018, both common in Italian acute-care hospitals. CONCLUSIONS MDRO colonization is common among residents in Italian LTCFs.

Abstract
Cleft palate only (CPO) is one of the most common congenital malformations worldwide. The etiopathogenesis of CPO is not completely understood. Environmental factors, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, intake of drugs during pregnancy, advanced paternal age, have been demonstrated to be a risk of CPO, but conflicting results have also been published. Insufficient intake of folic acid during the pregnancy has been suggested to increase the risk for CPO. The demonstrated risk for siblings and the higher risk for monozygotic twins suggest a genetic etiopathogenesis for CPO. In some cases of CPO a prevalent mode of inheritance has been reported, but oligogenic models with reduced penetrance, and the risk related to environmental factors have also been proved. One of the first manifestations associated with CPO is difficulty with feeding. Aerophagia is a problem in these infants with CPO and requires more frequent burping and slower feeding. The inability to generate intraoral breath pressure due to nasal air emission in CPO children frequently manifests as articulation difficulties, particularly consonant weakness, and unintelligible speech. Hearing disorders are prevalent among individuals with CPO, as a result of chronic otitis media with effusion due to eustachian tube dysfunction. A multidisciplinary team is essential to manage the many aspects of CPO. In treating CPO, the reconstructive surgeon works in cooperation with otolaryngologists, dentists and orthodontists, speech pathologists, audiologists, geneticists, psychiatrists, maxillofacial surgeons, social workers, and prosthodontists. CPO can be considered a genetically complex disease, but new knowledge and new therapeutic approaches have greatly improved the quality of life of these children. Prenatal diagnosis is an important step in the treatment of this disease.

Abstract
Cleft of the lip and/or palate (CL±P) is the most common congenital craniofacial anomaly affecting around 1 in 700 live births worldwide. Clefts of the human face can be classified anatomically as cleft lip only (CL), cleft palate only (CP), cleft lip and palate (CLP) or a combined group of cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CL±P), based on differences in embryologic development. CL±P has a genetic base and several linkage and association analyses have been performed in order to obtain important information about the role of candidate genes in its onset; not less important are gene-environment interactions that play an increasing role in its aetiology. In CL±P, several loci have been seen associated with the malformation, and, in some cases, a specific gene mapping in a locus has also been identified as susceptibility factor. In CP, one gene has been found, but many more are probably involved. In this short review the genetic studies carried out on CL±P, and the interaction with environmental factors (alcohol, smoking, drugs) are discussed.

Abstract
PURPOSE To assess the changes in bacterial profile along the transmucosal path of healing screws placed immediately after insertion of two-piece endosseus implants during the 4-month osseointegration phase, in absence of functional load. MATERIALS AND METHODS Two site-specific samples were collected at the peri-implant mucosa of the healing screws of 80 two-piece implants, for a total of 640 samples. Implants placement was performed following a single protocol with flapless technique, in order to limit bacterial contamination of the surgical site. Identical healing screws (5 mm diameter/4 mm height) were used for each of the 80 implants. During the 4 months of the study, the patients followed a standard oral care regimen with no special hygiene maneuvers at the collection sites. RESULTS The present research documents that during the 4-month period prior to application of function load the bacterial profile of all sites exhibited a clear prevalence of cocci at the interface between implant neck and osteoalveolar crest margin. CONCLUSIONS A potentially pathogenic bacterial flora developed only along the peri-implant transmucosal path.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study had the aim of comparing two different methods of analysing dentin sialoprotein (DSP) in the gingival crevicular fluid (GCF): the conventional eLISA approach and a new method involving the use of magnetic micro-beads coated with an antibody specific for DSP prior to eLISA analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS GCF was taken from six patients following twelve weeks of orthodontic treatment using paper strips inserted into the mesial and distal sulci of the upper incisors, and analysed using both methods. RESULTS Statistical analysis of the results using the Mann-Whitney non-parametric test showed that the micro-bead approach conferred more reliability and less variability on the conventional eLISA approach. Furthermore, this method, for the first time, enables the quantification of the DSP in the sample in ng/μl. CONCLUSIONS The innovative micro-bead/eLISA approach proposed provides a reliable means of quantifying the DSP in the GCF.

Abstract
We have developed a pulsed magnet system with panoramic access for synchrotron x-ray diffraction in magnetic fields up to 31 T and at low temperature down to 1.5 K. The apparatus consists of a split-pair magnet, a liquid nitrogen bath to cool the pulsed coil, and a helium cryostat allowing sample temperatures from 1.5 up to 250 K. Using a 1.15 MJ mobile generator, magnetic field pulses of 60 ms length were generated in the magnet, with a rise time of 16.5 ms and a repetition rate of 2 pulses/h at 31 T. The setup was validated for single crystal diffraction on the ESRF beamline ID06.

Abstract
This study was carried out by varying both graphene oxide (GO) concentration (10 μg/mL, 50 μg/mL, 100 μg/mL) and flakes sizes of 1320 nm and 130 nm. Characterization by scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy demonstrate that the area of GO flakes varies of one order of magnitude but their chemical structure remains unmodified. A 24-h cytotoxicity test showed, for A549, a loss in the viability, while the test exhibits overall a positive increase in the viability for CaCo2 and Vero. A 24-h comet assay shows a marked GO genotoxicity: for micrometer-sized GO flakes the genotoxicity is in positive correlation with the concentration, while for nanometer-sized GO flakes there was a high degree of genotoxicity at the lowest concentration tested.

Abstract
A randomized clinical trial was performed in schoolchildren (6-7 yrs) to evaluate fluoride concentration in interproximal fluid after the placement of 3 different sealants. The sample consisted of 2,776 children randomly divided: 926 in the high-viscosity Glass-ionomer Cement group (GIC group), 923 in the fluoride Resin-based group (fluoride-RB group), and 927 in the no-fluoride Resin-based group (RB group). In total, 2,640 children completed the trial. Sealants were applied following manufacturer’s instructions. Interproximal fluid samples were collected at baseline and 2, 7, and 21 days after application of sealants, by insertion of a standardized paperpoint into the interproximal mesial space of the sealed tooth for 15 seconds. Fluoride concentration was evaluated by means of a fluoride ion-selective electrode. At 2 days after sealant application, fluoride concentration was significantly higher in GIC and fluoride-RB groups compared with that in the RB group ( p < .01). Mean fluoride concentrations after 7 days were 2.54 (SE 0.68) ppm, 0.85 (SE 0.26) ppm, and 0.53 (SE 0.11) ppm for the three groups, respectively. After 21 days, fluoride concentration in the GIC group remained higher than that in the other two groups. High-viscosity GIC sealants increased the fluoride concentrations in interproximal fluid more than did a Resin-based sealant containing fluoride (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT01588210).

Abstract
Brillouin light scattering spectra from transverse and longitudinal acoustic waves in liquid and supercooled 3-methylpentane have been collected from room temperature down to 80 K, just above the glass transition. Spectra at different wave vectors have been obtained using 532 nm and 266 nm excitation. We found evidence of a shear relaxation with a characteristic time of 100 s at the glass transition which only partly accounts for the relaxation observed in the propagation and attenuation of the longitudinal modes. The inclusion of a relaxing bulk viscosity contribution with a relaxation time of the order of 10(2) ns at the glass transition is found to adequately reproduce the experimental data including transient grating data at a much lower frequency. A consistent picture of relaxed shear and bulk moduli as a function of temperature is derived. These two quantities are found to be related by a linear relation suggesting that a Cauchy-like relation holds also above the glass transition.

Abstract
We report on the design, construction, and operation of a horizontal field, 30 T magnet system with a conical bore optimized for synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction. The magnet offers ±31° optical access downstream of the sample, which allows to measure a sufficiently large number of Debye rings for an accurate crystal structure analysis. Combined with a 290 kJ generator, magnetic field pulses of 60 ms length were generated in the magnet, with a rise time of 4.1 ms and a repetition rate of 6 pulses/h at 30 T. The coil is mounted inside a liquid nitrogen bath. A liquid helium flow cryostat reaches into the coil and allows sample temperature between 5 and 250 K. The setup was used on the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility beamlines ID20 and ID06.

Abstract
The ability to pattern graphene over large areas with nanometer resolution is the current request for nanodevice fabrication at the industrial scale. Existing methods do not match high throughput with nanometer resolution. We propose a high-throughput resistless extreme-UV (EUV) photolithographic approach operating with sub-micrometer resolution on large area (~10 mm(2)) graphene oxide (GO) films via spatially resolved photoreduction. The efficiency of EUV photoreduction is tested with 46.9 nm coherent light produced by a table top capillary discharge plasma source. Irradiated samples are studied by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) and micro-Raman Spectroscopy (μRS). XPS data show that 200 mJ/cm(2) EUV dose produces, onto pristine GO, a 6% increase of sp(2) carbon bonds and a 20% decrease of C-O bonds. μRS data demonstrate a photoreduction efficiency 2 orders of magnitude higher than the one reported in the literature for UV-assisted photoreduction. GO patterning is obtained modulating the EUV dose with a Lloyd's interferometer. The lithographic features consist of GO stripes with modulated reduction degree. Such modulation is investigated and demonstrated by μRS on patterns with 2 μm periodicity.

Abstract
The acoustic properties of highly concentrated H(2)SO(4) are investigated performing visible and ultraviolet Brillouin scattering measurements. We analyzed the isotropic and anisotropic spectra of this molecular liquid in a wide temperature and exchanged wavector range in order to study the evolution of its sound velocity and viscosity. This allows us to extract the parameters required to describe its viscoelastic relaxation behavior. We found that the behavior of the hydrodynamic parameters of this molecular liquid shares some similarities with that of water indicating a rather high increase of sound velocity if compared to that measured by ultrasonics.

Abstract
We report a systematic investigation of the colour contrast (CC) of graphene (one, two and three layers) on 50, 72 and 80 nm thick Al(2)O(3)/Si(100) and 100 and 300 nm thick SiO(2)/Si(100). The CC is determined by the analysis of optical microscopy images taken under white light illumination. A corresponding assignment of graphene in the single-layer, double-layer and trilayer phases is made using micro-Raman spectroscopy. A quantitative evaluation allows us to conclude that the colour contrast between 72 nm alumina and graphene is significantly larger than that between 300 nm silicon oxide and graphene (by factors of 2.2, 2.0 and 3.3 for the single-layer, double-layer and trilayer graphene flakes respectively). Moreover, data indicate that, to increase visibility, the use of a red or a green light is preferable.

Abstract
The de Haas-van Alphen effect was observed in the underdoped cuprate YBa2Cu3O6.5 via a torque technique in pulsed magnetic fields up to 59 T. Above a field of approximately 30 T the magnetization exhibits clear quantum oscillations with a single frequency of 540 T and a cyclotron mass of 1.76 times the free electron mass, in excellent agreement with previously observed Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. The oscillations obey the standard Lifshitz-Kosevich formula of Fermi-liquid theory. This thermodynamic observation of quantum oscillations confirms the existence of a well-defined, closed, and coherent, Fermi surface in the pseudogap phase of cuprates.

Abstract
We report the observation of Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations in the underdoped cuprate superconductor YBa2Cu4O8 (Y124). For fields aligned along the c axis, the frequency of the oscillations is 660+/-30 T, which corresponds to approximately 2.4% of the total area of the first Brillouin zone. The effective mass of the quasiparticles on this orbit is measured to be 2.7+/-0.3 times the free electron mass. Both the frequency and mass are comparable to those recently observed for ortho-II YBa2Cu3O6.5 (Y123-II). We show that although small Fermi surface pockets may be expected from band-structure calculations in Y123-II, no such pockets are predicted for Y124. Our results therefore imply that these small pockets are a generic feature of the copper oxide plane in underdoped cuprates.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cystic fibrosis (CF) airways are characterised by chronic inflammation, increased interleukin (IL)-8 secretion, and neutrophil activation which are considered the principal factors of morbidity and mortality in CF patients. Optimising management of this chronic inflammatory response is therefore a key issue of basic and clinical CF research. Several reports have addressed ways to manage CF airways inflammation, and an attractive therapeutic strategy may be the inhibition of the p38-mitogen activated protein kinase (p38-MAP-k) pathway. METHODS A new ex vivo model was used to study the mucosal inflammatory response to environmental airways stimuli. Nasal biopsy tissues from CF patients and controls were cultured ex vivo for 20 minutes, 4 hours, and 24 hours in the presence of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) with and without the p38-MAP-k inhibitor SB203580. Quantitative mRNA assessment, immunohistochemistry, and Western blots were used to detect the expression and modulation of inflammatory markers. RESULTS PA-LPS challenge induced a time dependent mucosal inflammation indicated by rapid epithelial activation, IL-8 release, COX-2 upregulation, and neutrophil migration to the upper mucosal layers. Some of these LPS induced changes (IL-8 release and neutrophil migration) were specific to CF tissues. SB203580 significantly controlled all LPS induced mucosal changes in CF tissues. CONCLUSION These findings provide a rationale and proof of principle for the potential use of p38-MAP-k inhibitors to control inflammation in patients with CF.

Abstract
The high-frequency collective dynamics of molten potassium has been investigated by inelastic x-ray scattering, disclosing an energy/momentum transfer region unreachable by previous inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments. We find that a two-step relaxation scenario, similar to that found in other liquid metals, applies to liquid potassium. In particular, we show how the sound velocity determined by INS experiments, exceeding the hydrodynamic value by approximately 30%, is the higher limit of a speedup, located in the momentum region 1 < Q < 3 nm(-1), which marks the departure from the isothermal value. We point out how this phenomenology is the consequence of a microscopic relaxation process that, in turn, can be traced back to the presence of "instantaneous" disorder, rather than to the crossover from a liquid to solidlike response.

The prevalence of nasal polyps in a group of paediatric patients with cystic fibrosis was prospectively studied in comparison with a control group with cystic fibrosis but without polyps. Clinical variables, including pulmonary function tests, skin testing and mucociliary transport, were carried out in both groups, as well as genotype analysis. Endoscopic intranasal evaluation identified polyps in 29 of 89 patients (33%). Statistical analysis revealed that patients with nasal polyposis had better pulmonary function, a higher rate of Pseudomonas aeruginosa colonization, more hospitalizations, and more prevalence of allergy to Aspergillus fumigatus than did the comparison group. We found no statistically different genotype distribution between the polyposis and the control group. However, it can be emphasized that the prevalence of the compound heterozygous genotype is higher in the nasal polyposis group than in controls. Our observations suggest that other genetic and environmental factors could play an important role in the development of nasal polyposis.

Abstract
Pleomorphic adenoma is the most common neoplasm of the major salivary glands, in particular of the parotid gland. Only occasionally can it be found in the cervicofacial area outside the major and minor salivary glands of the oral cavity. The present article describes three cases of pleomorphic adenoma, respectively of the external auditory canal, the nose, and the larynx. The three tumors showed no clinical or radiological signs of malignancy and were surgically excised with a suitable margin of healthy tissue. Histologically, the typical features of pleomorphic adenoma were observed in the larynx case alone. The pleomorphic adenoma of the external auditory canal evidenced an extensive apocrine glandular component; the neoplasm of the nose was itself characterized by ample proliferation of fused cells. Immunohistochemical findings revealed focal or widespread positivity to cytokeratin, S100 protein and muscle-specific actin in both the epithelial and mesenchymal components of the neoplasm. Cases of pleomorphic adenoma in sites other than the major salivary glands show clinical and radiological signs of benignity. Their histopathological identification is, however, not always straightforward; immunohistochemistry can contribute significantly to the formulation of a definitive diagnosis and to the realization of an appropriate follow-up.

Abstract
This work reports some different applications of Raman spectroscopy, a high sensitive non-destructive technique, to the conservation of Library Heritage. By Raman spectroscopy we were able to detect the chemical mechanisms leading to cellulose degradation, identifying the different functional groups formed during the paper ageing. This kind of information is fundamental to choose a suited restoration treatment. A second reported application is the identification of pigments used to decorate paper and parchments. We report some results obtained from analysis of a XV and a XIII century illuminations.

Abstract
Quantum effects in the teraherz dynamics of supercritical 4He have been studied as a function of both density rho and temperature T; they have been characterized through their effects on the second and third spectral moments of the dynamic structure factor S(Q, omega), measured by the inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) technique. The IXS spectra were collected in the low-Q region below and around the position of the first diffraction peak Q(m), i.e., in a range relatively unusual in this kind of investigation. The measured spectral moments clearly show a departure from their high-T classical expected values. We observe, moreover, that the amplitude of quantum deviations increases slightly with increasing density. This experimental method allows us to extract, even in a region where the dynamics still maintains a collective character, such typical single particle properties as the mean atomic kinetic energy.
