Synthesis and characterization of bulk Nd1-x Sr x NiO2 and Nd1-x Sr x NiO3

Atomic scale disorder and reconstruction in bulk infinite-layer nickelates lacking superconductivity

The recent discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelate films has sparked significant interest and expanded the realm of superconductors, in which the infinite-layer structure and proper chemical doping are both of the essence. Nonetheless, the reasons for the absence of superconductivity in bulk infinite-layer nickelates remain puzzling. Herein, we investigate atomic defects and electronic structures in bulk infinite-layer Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2 using scanning transmission electron microscopy. Our observations reveal the presence of three-dimensional (3D) block-like structural domains resulting from intersecting defect structures, disrupting the continuity within crystal grains, which could be a crucial factor in giving rise to the insulating character and inhibiting the emergence of superconductivity. Moreover, the infinite-layer structure, without complete topotactic reduction, retains interstitial oxygen atoms on the Nd atomic plane in bulk nickelates, possibly further aggravating the local distortions of NiO2 planes and hindering the superconductivity. These findings shed light on the existence of structural and atomic defects in bulk nickelates and provide valuable insights into the influence of proper topotactic reduction and structural orders on superconductivity.

Superconductivity in Freestanding Infinite-Layer Nickelate Membranes

The observation of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates has attracted significant attention due to its potential as a new platform for exploring high-Tc superconductivity. However, thus far, superconductivity has only been observed in epitaxial thin films, which limits the manipulation capabilities and modulation methods compared to two-dimensional exfoliated materials. Given the exceptionally giant strain tunability and stacking capability of freestanding membranes, separating superconducting nickelates from the as-grown substrate is a novel way to engineer the superconductivity and uncover the underlying physics. Herein, this work reports the synthesis of the superconducting freestanding La0.8Sr0.2NiO2 membranes (T c zero = 10.6 K ${T}_{\mathrm{c}}^{\mathrm{zero}}\ =\ 10.6\ \mathrm{K}$ ), emphasizing the crucial roles of the interface engineering in the precursor phase film growth and the quick transfer process in achieving superconductivity. This work offers a new versatile platform for investigating superconductivity in nickelates, such as the pairing symmetry via constructing Josephson tunneling junctions and higher Tc values via high-pressure experiments.

Absence of 3a0 charge density wave order in the infinite-layer nickelate NdNiO2

A hallmark of many unconventional superconductors is the presence of many-body interactions that give rise to broken-symmetry states intertwined with superconductivity. Recent resonant soft X-ray scattering experiments report commensurate 3a0 charge density wave order in infinite-layer nickelates, which has important implications regarding the universal interplay between charge order and superconductivity in both cuprates and nickelates. Here we present X-ray scattering and spectroscopy measurements on a series of NdNiO2+x samples, which reveal that the signatures of charge density wave order are absent in fully reduced, single-phase NdNiO2. The 3a0 superlattice peak instead originates from a partially reduced impurity phase where excess apical oxygens form ordered rows with three-unit-cell periodicity. The absence of any observable charge density wave order in NdNiO2 highlights a crucial difference between the phase diagrams of cuprate and nickelate superconductors.

Impact of Polarity Mismatch in Infinite-Layer Nickelates

The recent discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer Sr-doped NdNiO2 grown on SrTiO3(001) provides a new platform to explore the conducting mechanism of unconventional superconductors. However, the electronic structure of infinite-layer nickelates remains controversial. In this paper, we systematically compare the structural and electronic properties of NdNiO2 films grown on SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 substrates using first-principles calculations. Our results show that the lattice reconstruction accompanied by electronic reconstruction occurs in nickelate films on both substrates. Although both heterostructures (HSs) are conducting at the interface, the SrTiO3-based HS shows distinct atomic displacement in the interfacial TiO2 layer and significant electron accumulation deep into three SrTiO3 layers below the interface, while the LaAlO3-based HS shows negligible atomic displacement and electron localization in the interfacial AlO2 layer, reflecting the impact of polarity mismatch on the electronic structure. Further, Wannier function calculations reveal that the interface stress has no obvious effect on the splitting energy and hopping integral between Ni 3d and Nd-layer orbitals. Although the hybridization between Ni 3dx2-y2 and Nd 5d orbitals is tiny, the hybridization between the Ni 3dx2-y2 orbital and an itinerant interstitial s (IIS) orbital is significantly strong in both cases, suggesting that the IIS orbital may play a critical role in the superconductivity of nickelates.

Valence-Ordered Thin-Film Nickelate with Tri-component Nickel Coordination Prepared by Topochemical Reduction

The metal-hydride-based "topochemical reduction" process has produced several thermodynamically unstable phases across various transition metal oxide series with unusual crystal structures and nontrivial ground states. Here, by such an oxygen (de-)intercalation method we synthesis a samarium nickelate with ordered nickel valences associated with tri-component coordination configurations. This structure, with a formula of Sm9Ni9O22 as revealed by four-dimensional scanning transmission electron microscopy (4D-STEM), emerges from the intricate planes of {303}pc ordered apical oxygen vacancies. X-ray spectroscopy measurements and ab initio calculations show the coexistence of square planar, pyramidal, and octahedral Ni sites with mono-, bi-, and tri-valences. It leads to an intense orbital polarization, charge-ordering, and a ground state with a strong electron localization marked by the disappearance of ligand-hole configuration at low temperature. This nickelate compound provides another example of previously inaccessible materials enabled by topotactic transformations and presents an interesting platform where mixed Ni valence can give rise to exotic phenomena.

Signatures of superconductivity near 80 K in a nickelate under high pressure

Although high-transition-temperature (high-Tc) superconductivity in cuprates has been known for more than three decades, the underlying mechanism remains unknown1-4. Cuprates are the only unconventional superconductors that exhibit bulk superconductivity with Tc above the liquid-nitrogen boiling temperature of 77 K. Here we observe that high-pressure resistance and mutual inductive magnetic susceptibility measurements showed signatures of superconductivity in single crystals of La3Ni2O7 with maximum Tc of 80 K at pressures between 14.0 GPa and 43.5 GPa. The superconducting phase under high pressure has an orthorhombic structure of Fmmm space group with the [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] orbitals of Ni cations strongly mixing with oxygen 2p orbitals. Our density functional theory calculations indicate that the superconductivity emerges coincidently with the metallization of the σ-bonding bands under the Fermi level, consisting of the [Formula: see text] orbitals with the apical oxygen ions connecting the Ni-O bilayers. Thus, our discoveries provide not only important clues for the high-Tc superconductivity in this Ruddlesden-Popper double-layered perovskite nickelates but also a previously unknown family of compounds to investigate the high-Tc superconductivity mechanism.

Limits to the strain engineering of layered square-planar nickelate thin films

The layered square-planar nickelates, Nd_n+1Ni_nO_2n+2, are an appealing system to tune the electronic properties of square-planar nickelates via dimensionality; indeed, superconductivity was recently observed in Nd₆Ni₅O₁₂ thin films. Here, we investigate the role of epitaxial strain in the competing requirements for the synthesis of the n = 3 Ruddlesden-Popper compound, Nd₄Ni₃O₁₀, and subsequent reduction to the square-planar phase, Nd₄Ni₃O₈. We synthesize our highest quality Nd₄Ni₃O₁₀ films under compressive strain on LaAlO₃ (001), while Nd₄Ni₃O₁₀ on NdGaO₃ (110) exhibits tensile strain-induced rock salt faults but retains bulk-like transport properties. A high density of extended defects forms in Nd₄Ni₃O₁₀ on SrTiO₃ (001). Films reduced on LaAlO₃ become insulating and form compressive strain-induced c-axis canting defects, while Nd₄Ni₃O₈ films on NdGaO₃ are metallic. This work provides a pathway to the synthesis of Nd_n+1Ni_nO_2n+2 thin films and sets limits on the ability to strain engineer these compounds via epitaxy.

Exploring the 4d1analogue of cuprates: theoretical studies on bulk NbF4and NbF4monolayer stabilized on MgO (001) plane

The recent research in infinite-layer nickelates has inspired new effort in finding the cuprate analogs. Here we propose that NbF₄, which contains niobium-centered fluorine octahedra, is a promising 4d¹analogue of cuprates. Using the density functional theory, we first show that bulk NbF₄is in close proximity tod¹configuration, with Nb4dxyorbital nearly half-filled. A single band with dominating4dxycharacter crosses the Fermi level, forming a square-like Fermi surface. The intralayer G-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) order is energetically favored and the Coulomb interaction drives the system into an AFM insulator. Next we demonstrate that the NbF₄layer can be stabilized on MgO substrate with main electronic and magnetic features retained, offering an alternative route to realize the NbF₄-related high-T_csuperconductors. Furthermore, we derive effective single orbital models for both systems and investigate the electron correlation effects via functional renormalization group. We find that the G-type AFM dominates near half-filling butdx2-y2-wave superconductivity (SC) prevails upon suitable hole/electron doping. Based on the striking similarities between NbF₄and cuprates, we suggest that NbF₄-related compounds may be exotic candidates for searching new high-T_csuperconductors.

Superconducting Instabilities in Strongly Correlated Infinite-Layer Nickelates

The discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates has added a new family of materials to the fascinating growing class of unconventional superconductors. By incorporating the strongly correlated multiorbital nature of the low-energy electronic degrees of freedom, we compute the leading superconducting instability from magnetic fluctuations relevant for infinite-layer nickelates. Specifically, by properly including the doping dependence of the Ni d_{x^{2}-y^{2}} and d_{z^{2}} orbitals as well as the self-doping band, we uncover a transition from d-wave pairing symmetry to nodal s_{±} superconductivity, driven by strong fluctuations in the d_{z^{2}}-dominated orbital states. We discuss the properties of the resulting superconducting condensates in light of recent tunneling and penetration depth experiments probing the detailed superconducting gap structure of these materials.

Dimensionality-Controlled Evolution of Charge-Transfer Energy in Digital Nickelates Superlattices

Fundamental understanding and control of the electronic structure evolution in rare-earth nickelates is a fascinating and meaningful issue, as well as being helpful to understand the mechanism of recently discovered superconductivity. Here the dimensionality effect on the ground electronic state in high-quality (NdNiO₃ ) _m /(SrTiO₃ )₁ superlattices is systematically studied through transport and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The metal-to-insulator transition temperature decreases with the thickness of the NdNiO₃ slab decreasing from bulk to 7 unit cells, then increases gradually as m further reduces to 1 unit cell. Spectral evidence demonstrates that the stabilization of insulating phase can be attributed to the increase of the charge-transfer energy between O 2p and Ni 3d bands. The prominent multiplet feature on the Ni L₃ edge develops with the decrease of NdNiO₃ slab thickness, suggesting the strengthening of the charge disproportionate state under the dimensional confinement. This work provides convincing evidence that dimensionality is an effective knob to modulate the charge-transfer energy and thus the collective ground state in nickelates.

Superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates

The recent discovery of the superconductivity in the doped infinite layer nickelatesRNiO₂(R= La, Pr, Nd) is of great interest since the nickelates are isostructural to doped (Ca, Sr)CuO₂having superconducting transition temperature (T_c) of about 110 K. Verifying the commonalities and differences between these oxides will certainly give a new insight into the mechanism of highT_csuperconductivity in correlated electron systems. In this paper, we review experimental and theoretical works on this new superconductor and discuss the future perspectives for the 'nickel age' of superconductivity.

Superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelate La1-xCaxNiO2 thin films

We report the observation of superconductivity in infinite-layer Ca-doped LaNiO₂ (La_1-xCa_xNiO₂) thin films and construct their phase diagram. Unlike the metal-insulator transition in Nd- and Pr-based nickelates, the undoped and underdoped La_1-xCa_xNiO₂ thin films are entirely insulating from 300 K down to 2 K. A superconducting dome is observed at 0.15 < x < 0.3 with weakly insulating behavior at the overdoped regime. Moreover, the sign of the Hall coefficient R_H changes at low temperature for samples with a higher doping level. However, distinct from the Nd- and Pr-based nickelates, the R_H-sign-change temperature remains at around 35 K as the doping increases, which begs further theoretical and experimental investigation to reveal the role of the 4f orbital to the (multi)band nature of the superconducting nickelates. Our results also emphasize a notable role of lattice correlation on the multiband structures of the infinite-layer nickelates.

Observation of perfect diamagnetism and interfacial effect on the electronic structures in infinite layer Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2 superconductors

Nickel-based complex oxides have served as a playground for decades in the quest for a copper-oxide analog of the high-temperature superconductivity. They may provide clues towards understanding the mechanism and an alternative route for high-temperature superconductors. The recent discovery of superconductivity in the infinite-layer nickelate thin films has fulfilled this pursuit. However, material synthesis remains challenging, direct demonstration of perfect diamagnetism is still missing, and understanding of the role of the interface and bulk to the superconducting properties is still lacking. Here, we show high-quality Nd_0.8Sr_0.2NiO₂ thin films with different thicknesses and demonstrate the interface and strain effects on the electrical, magnetic and optical properties. Perfect diamagnetism is achieved, confirming the occurrence of superconductivity in the films. Unlike the thick films in which the normal-state Hall-coefficient changes signs as the temperature decreases, the Hall-coefficient of films thinner than 5.5 nm remains negative, suggesting a thickness-driven band structure modification. Moreover, X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveals the Ni-O hybridization nature in doped infinite-layer nickelates, and the hybridization is enhanced as the thickness decreases. Consistent with band structure calculations on the nickelate/SrTiO₃ heterostructure, the interface and strain effect induce a dominating electron-like band in the ultrathin film, thus causing the sign-change of the Hall-coefficient.

Nickelate superconductors attract enormous attention in the field of high-temperature superconductivity. Here the authors report observation of perfect diamagnetism and interfacial effect on the electronic structures in infinite layer Nd_0.8Sr_0.2NiO₂ superconductors.

Superconductivity in a quintuple-layer square-planar nickelate

Since the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in copper oxide materials¹, there have been sustained efforts to both understand the origins of this phase and discover new cuprate-like superconducting materials². One prime materials platform has been the rare-earth nickelates and, indeed, superconductivity was recently discovered in the doped compound Nd_0.8Sr_0.2NiO₂ (ref. ³). Undoped NdNiO₂ belongs to a series of layered square-planar nickelates with chemical formula Nd_n+1Ni_nO_2n+2 and is known as the 'infinite-layer' (n = ∞) nickelate. Here we report the synthesis of the quintuple-layer (n = 5) member of this series, Nd₆Ni₅O₁₂, in which optimal cuprate-like electron filling (d^8.8) is achieved without chemical doping. We observe a superconducting transition beginning at ~13 K. Electronic structure calculations, in tandem with magnetoresistive and spectroscopic measurements, suggest that Nd₆Ni₅O₁₂ interpolates between cuprate-like and infinite-layer nickelate-like behaviour. In engineering a distinct superconducting nickelate, we identify the square-planar nickelates as a new family of superconductors that can be tuned via both doping and dimensionality.

Superconductivity in nickel-based 112 systems

Superconductivity has been discovered recently in infinite-layer nickel-based 112 thin films R_1−xA_xNiO₂ (R = La, Nd, Pr and A = Sr, Ca). They are isostructural to the infinite-layer cuprate (Ca,Sr)CuO₂ and are supposed to have a formal Ni 3d⁹ valence, thus providing a new platform to study the unconventional pairing mechanism of high-temperature superconductors. This important discovery immediately triggers a huge amount of innovative scientific curiosity in the field. In this paper, we try to give an overview of the recent research progress on the newly found superconducting nickelate systems, both from experimental and theoretical aspects. We mainly focus on the electronic structures, magnetic excitations, phase diagrams and superconducting gaps, and finally make some open discussions for possible pairing symmetries in Ni-based 112 systems.

Antiferromagnetism in Ni-Based Superconductors

Due to the lack of any magnetic order down to 1.7 K in the parent bulk compound NdNiO₂ , the recently discovered 9-15 K superconductivity in the infinite-layer Nd_0.8 Sr_0.2 NiO₂ thin films has provided an exciting playground for unearthing new superconductivity mechanisms. Herein, the successful synthesis of a series of superconducting Nd_0.8 Sr_0.2 NiO₂ thin films ranging from 8 to 40 nm is reported. The large exchange bias effect is observed between the superconducting Nd_0.8 Sr_0.2 NiO₂ films and a thin ferromagnetic layer, which suggests the existence of the antiferromagnetic order. Furthermore, the existence of the antiferromagnetic order is evidenced by X-ray magnetic linear dichroism measurements. These experimental results are fundamentally critical for the current field.

Topotactic transformation of single crystals: From perovskite to infinite-layer nickelates

Topotactic transformations between related crystal structures are a powerful emerging route for the synthesis of novel quantum materials. Whereas most such “soft chemistry” experiments have been carried out on polycrystalline powders or thin films, the topotactic modification of single crystals, the gold standard for physical property measurements on quantum materials, has been studied only sparsely. Here, we report the topotactic reduction of La_1−xCa_xNiO₃ single crystals to La_1−xCa_xNiO_2+δ using CaH₂ as the reducing agent. The transformation from the three-dimensional perovskite to the quasi–two-dimensional infinite-layer phase was thoroughly characterized by x-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, magnetometry, and electrical transport measurements. Our work demonstrates that the infinite-layer structure can be realized as a bulk phase in crystals with micrometer-sized single domains. The electronic properties of these specimens resemble those of epitaxial thin films rather than powders with similar compositions.

Nickelate Superconductivity without Rare-Earth Magnetism: (La,Sr)NiO2

The occurrence of unconventional superconductivity in cuprates has long motivated the search for manifestations in other layered transition metal oxides. Recently, superconductivity is found in infinite-layer nickelate (Nd,Sr)NiO₂ and (Pr,Sr)NiO₂ thin films, formed by topotactic reduction from the perovskite precursor phase. A topic of much current interest is whether rare-earth moments are essential for superconductivity in this system. In this study, it is found that with significant materials optimization, substantial portions of the La_{1- x} Sr_x NiO₂ phase diagram can enter the regime of coherent low-temperature transport (x = 0.14 - 0.20), with subsequent superconducting transitions and a maximum onset of ≈9 K at x = 0.20. Additionally, the unexpected indication of a superconducting ground state in undoped LaNiO₂ is observed, which likely reflects the self-doped nature of the electronic structure. Combining the results of (La/Pr/Nd)_{1- x} Sr_x NiO₂ reveals a generalized superconducting dome, characterized by systematic shifts in the unit cell volume and in the relative electron-hole populations across the lanthanides.

Synthesis and physical properties of perovskite Sm1-xSrxNiO3(x= 0, 0.2) and infinite-layer Sm0.8Sr0.2NiO2nickelates

Recently, superconductivity at about 9-15 K was discovered in Nd_1-xSr_xNiO₂(Nd-112,x≈ 0.125-0.25) infinite-layer thin films, which has stimulated enormous interests in related rare-earth nickelates. Usually, the first step to synthesize this 112 phase is to fabricate theRNiO₃(R-113,R: rare-earth element) phase, however, it was reported that the 113 phase is very difficult to be synthesized successfully due to the formation of unusual Ni³⁺oxidation state. And the difficulty of preparation is enhanced as the ionic radius of rare-earth element decreases. In this work, we report the synthesis and investigation on multiple physical properties of polycrystalline perovskites Sm_1-xSr_xNiO₃(x= 0, 0.2) in which the ionic radius of Sm³⁺is smaller than that of Pr³⁺and Nd³⁺in related superconducting thin films. The structural and compositional analyses conducted by x-ray diffraction and energy dispersive x-ray spectrum reveal that the samples mainly contain the perovskite phase of Sm_1-xSr_xNiO₃with small amount of NiO impurities. Magnetization and resistivity measurements indicate that the parent phase SmNiO₃undergoes a paramagnetic-antiferromagnetic transition at about 224 K on a global insulating background. In contrast, the Sr-doped sample Sm_0.8Sr_0.2NiO₃shows a metallic behavior from 300 K down to about 12 K, while below 12 K the resistivity exhibits a slight logarithmic increase. Meanwhile, from the magnetization curves, we can see that a possible spin-glass state occurs below 12 K in Sm_0.8Sr_0.2NiO₃. Using a soft chemical reduction method, we also obtain the infinite-layer phase Sm_0.8Sr_0.2NiO₂with square NiO₂planes. The compound shows an insulating behavior which can be described by the three-dimensional variable-range-hopping model. And superconductivity is still absent in the polycrystalline Sm_0.8Sr_0.2NiO₂.

Intrinsic Spin Susceptibility and Pseudogaplike Behavior in Infinite-Layer LaNiO_{2}

The recent discovery of superconductivity in doped infinite-layer nickelates has stimulated intensive interest, especially for similarities and differences compared to that in cuprate superconductors. In contrast to cuprates, although earlier magnetization measurement reveals a Curie-Weiss-like behavior in undoped infinite-layer nickelates, there is no magnetic ordering observed by elastic neutron scattering down to liquid helium temperature. Until now, the nature of the magnetic ground state in undoped infinite-layer nickelates was still elusive. Here, we perform a nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiment through ^{139}La nuclei to study the intrinsic spin susceptibility of infinite-layer LaNiO_{2}. First, the signature for magnetic ordering or freezing is absent in the ^{139}La NMR spectrum down to 0.24 K, which unambiguously confirms a paramagnetic ground state in LaNiO_{2}. Second, a pseudogaplike behavior instead of Curie-Weiss-like behavior is observed in both the temperature-dependent Knight shift and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (1/T_{1}), which is widely observed in both underdoped cuprates and iron-based superconductors. Furthermore, the scaling behavior between the Knight shift and 1/T_{1}T has also been discussed. Finally, the present results imply a considerable exchange interaction in infinite-layer nickelates, which sets a strong constraint for the proposed theoretical models.

Layered Cuprates Containing Flat Fragments: High-Pressure Synthesis, Crystal Structures and Superconducting Properties

High-pressure synthesis and crystal structures of the homologous series AuBa2(Ca,Ln)n-1CunO2n+3 (n = 1-4; Ln = rare-earth cations) are described. Their crystal structures and superconducting properties are compared with the corresponding members of the Hg-homologous series. Numerous cuprates containing flat structural fragments (CuO4, CO3 and BO3) synthesized mainly at high pressure are compared in terms of structural peculiarities and superconducting properties. Importance and future prospects of high-pressure application for the preparation of new superconducting oxides are discussed.

Spontaneous phase segregation of Sr2NiO3 and SrNi2O3 during SrNiO3 heteroepitaxy

Recent discovery of superconductivity in Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2 motivates the synthesis of other nickelates for providing insights into the origin of high-temperature superconductivity. However, the synthesis of stoichiometric R 1-x Sr x NiO3 thin films over a range of x has proven challenging. Moreover, little is known about the structures and properties of the end member SrNiO3 Here, we show that spontaneous phase segregation occurs while depositing SrNiO3 thin films on perovskite oxide substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. Two coexisting oxygen-deficient Ruddlesden-Popper phases, Sr2NiO3 and SrNi2O3, are formed to balance the stoichiometry and stabilize the energetically preferred Ni2+ cation. Our study sheds light on an unusual oxide thin-film nucleation process driven by the instability in perovskite structured SrNiO3 and the tendency of transition metal cations to form their most stable valence (i.e., Ni2+ in this case). The resulting metastable reduced Ruddlesden-Popper structures offer a testbed for further studying emerging phenomena in nickel-based oxides.

Strong Superexchange in a d^{9-δ} Nickelate Revealed by Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering

The discovery of superconductivity in a d^{9-δ} nickelate has inspired disparate theoretical perspectives regarding the essential physics of this class of materials. A key issue is the magnitude of the magnetic superexchange, which relates to whether cuprate-like high-temperature nickelate superconductivity could be realized. We address this question using Ni L-edge and O K-edge spectroscopy of the reduced d^{9-1/3} trilayer nickelates R_{4}Ni_{3}O_{8} (where R=La, Pr) and associated theoretical modeling. A magnon energy scale of ∼80  meV resulting from a nearest-neighbor magnetic exchange of J=69(4)  meV is observed, proving that d^{9-δ} nickelates can host a large superexchange. This value, along with that of the Ni-O hybridization estimated from our O K-edge data, implies that trilayer nickelates represent an intermediate case between the infinite-layer nickelates and the cuprates. Layered nickelates thus provide a route to testing the relevance of superexchange to nickelate superconductivity.

Review on quasi-2D square planar nickelates

Quasi-2D square planar nickelates exhibit key ingredients of high-T_c superconducting cuprates. Whether bulk samples are superconducting remains an open question, single crystals are ideal platforms for addressing such fundamental questions.

Single particle tunneling spectrum of superconducting Nd1-xSrxNiO2 thin films

The pairing mechanism in cuprates remains as one of the most challenging issues in condensed matter physics. Recently, superconductivity was discovered in thin films of the infinite-layer nickelate Nd1-xSrxNiO2 (x = 0.12-0.25) which is believed to have the similar 3d9 orbital electrons as that in cuprates. Here we report single-particle tunneling measurements on the superconducting nickelate thin films. We find predominantly two types of tunneling spectra, one shows a V-shape feature which can be fitted well by a d-wave gap function with gap maximum of about 3.9 meV, another one exhibits a full gap of about 2.35 meV. Some spectra demonstrate mixed contributions of these two components. Combining with theoretical calculations, we attribute the d-wave gap to the pairing potential of the [Formula: see text] orbital. Several possible reasons are given for explaining the full gap feature. Our results indicate both similarities and distinctions between the newly found Ni-based superconductors and cuprates.
