Biochemical Defense Responses in Red Rice Genotypes Possessing Differential Resistance to Brown Planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens (Stål)

The brown planthopper [Nilaparvata lugens (Stål.)] is one of the most destructive insect pests in all the rice-growing regions of the world. The pest is complicated to manage through the blanket application of chemical pesticides. The development of stable, durable N. lugens-resistant rice varieties is the most economical and efficient strategy to manage the pest. Landraces of red rice genotypes possess numerous nutritional and stress-resistant properties, though an exclusive study on the same is yet to be carried out. In the present study, we evaluated 28 red rice genotypes, along with two resistance checks and one susceptibility check, for their resistance to N. lugens. These promising lines revealed differential responses in the defense mechanism against the pest. The resistant accessions showed a greater accumulation of phenols, peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase under N. lugens-stressed conditions. However, the concentration of soluble proteins was substantially decreased in all the test genotypes. The concentration of crude silica was at maximum in highly resistant genotypes. Six red rice genotypes, namely Mata Meher, Manipuri Black, Hermonona, Sonahanan, Bavdi, and Bacharya Khuta fall under the highly resistant category, and can be utilized as valuable sources of resistance in breeding programs.

Nickel: an overview of uptake, essentiality and toxicity in plants

Nickel even though recognized as a trace element, its metabolism is very decisive for certain enzyme activities, maintaining proper cellular redox state and various other biochemical, physiological and growth responses. Study of the aspects related with uptake, transport and distributive localization of Ni is very important in various cellular metabolic processes particularly under increased nitrogen metabolism. This review article, in core, encompasses the dual behavior of Ni in plants emphasizing its systemic partitioning, essentiality and ill effects. However, the core mechanism of molecules involved and the successive physiological conditions required starting from the soil absorption, neutralization and toxicity generated is still elusive, and varies among the plants.

PIXE analysis of trace elements in relation to chlorophyll concentration in Plantago ovata Forsk

Plantago ovata Forsk - an economically important medicinal plant - was analyzed for trace elements and chlorophyll in a study of the effects of gamma radiation on physiological responses of the seedlings. Proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) technique was used to quantify trace elements in unirradiated and gamma-irradiated plants at the seedling stage. The experiments revealed radiation-induced changes in the trace element and chlorophyll concentrations.

Effects of Iron and Oxygen on Chlorophyll Biosynthesis : I. IN VIVO OBSERVATIONS ON IRON AND OXYGEN-DEFICIENT PLANTS

Corn (Zea mays, L.), bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.), and sugarbeet (Beta vulgaris L.) grown under iron deficiency, and Potamogeton pectinatus L, and Potamogeton nodosus Poir. grown under oxygen deficiency, contained less chlorophyll than the controls, but accumulated Mg-protoporphyrin IX and/or Mg-protoporphyrin IX monomethyl ester. No significant accumulation of these intermediates was detected in the controls or in the tissue of plants stressed by S, Mg, N deficiency, or by prolonged dark treatment. Treatment of normal plant tissue with delta-aminolevulinic acid in the dark resulted in the accumulation of protochlorophyllide. If this treatment was carried out under conditions of iron or oxygen deficiency, less protochlorophyllide was formed, but a significant amount of Mg-protoporphyrin IX and Mg-protoporphyrin IX monomethyl ester accumulated.These results are consistent with the presence of an O(2), Fe-requiring step between Mg-protoporphyrin IX monomethyl ester and protochlorophyllide.

Iron accumulation, root peroxidase activity, and varietal interactions in soybean genotypes that differ in iron nutrition

Four soybean genotypes (Glycine max L. Merrill) differing in their ability to accumulate iron were studied: the efficient genotypes Hawkeye (HA) and A62-9 (E-9) and the inefficient genotypes PI-54619-5-1 (PI) and A62-10 (I-10).The distribution of iron in the tissues of plants grown in a growth chamber in nutrient solutions containing various levels of iron was determined. A greater amount of iron was associated with the roots of inefficient plants than with roots of efficient plants, indicating a slower rate of iron translocation in the former. After determination of the amount of iron in the shoots at low levels of nutrient iron, the ability of the several genotypes to accumulate iron was rated HA> E-9> I-10>/= PI. At the highest level of nutrient iron the rated efficiencies were E-9> HA> I-10> PI. Accumulation of iron in the primary leaves provided an excellent indication of whole-plant iron accumulation. A reduction in accumulation of iron by efficient plants occurred when the plants were grown together in the same solution as inefficient ones.
