Abstract
Understanding the competing processes that govern far ultraviolet photodissociation (FUV-PD) of biopolymers such as proteins is a challenge. Here, we report a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of FUV-PD of protonated leucine-enkephalin pentapeptide ([YGGFL + H]+) in the gas-phase. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations in combination with experiments and previous results for amino acids and shorter peptides help in rationalizing the evolution of the excited states. The results confirm that fragmentation of [YGGFL + H]+ results mainly from vibrationally excited species in the ground electronic state, populated after internal conversion. We also propose fragmentation mechanisms for specific photo-fragments such as tyrosine side chain loss (with an extra hydrogen) or hydrogen loss. In general, we observe the same mechanisms as for smaller peptides or protonated Tyr and Phe, that are not quenched by the presence of other amino acids. Nevertheless, we also found some differences, as for H loss, in part due to the fact that the charge is solvated by the peptide chain and not only by the COOH terminal group.

Abstract
The two inseparable companions, tropylium (Tr+) and benzylium (Bz+), were interrogated by vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) radiation from 4.5 to 7.0 eV in an ion trap. These new fingerprints provide a new means of distinguishing these two intertwined C7H7+ isomers. In particular, the singular spectral signature of Tr+ in the VUV consists of a single strong electronic transition at ≈6 eV. To illustrate this diagnostic tool, we shed light on the structure of the C7H7+ intermediate that is ubiquitous when using commercial atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI) sources. We have identified its structure as the 7-membered ring Tr+, which contradicts some previous beliefs.

Abstract
Single-photon ionization (SPI) is a unique soft ionization technique for organic analysis. A convenient high-flux vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) light source is a key precondition for wide application of SPI techniques. In this study, we present a novel VUV lamp by simply modifying an ordinary electrodeless fluorescent lamp. By replacing the glass bulb with a stainless steel bulb and introducing 5% Kr/He (v/v) as the excitation gas, an excellent VUV photon flux over 4.0 × 1014 photons s-1 was obtained. Due to its rapid glow characteristics, the VUV lamp can be switched on and off instantly as required by detection, ensuring the stability and service life of the lamp. To demonstrate the performance of the new lamp, the switchable VUV lamp was coupled with an SPI-mass spectrometer, which could be changed to photoinduced associative ionization (PAI) mode by doping gaseous CH2Cl2 to initiate an associative ionization reaction. Two types of volatile organic compounds sensitive to SPI and PAI, typically benzene series and oxygenated organics, respectively, were selected as samples. The instrument exhibited a high detection sensitivity for the tested compounds. With a measurement time of 11 s, the 3σ limits of detection ranged from 0.33 to 0.75 pptv in SPI mode and from 0.03 to 0.12 pptv in PAI mode. This study provides an extremely simple method to assemble a VUV lamp with many merits, e.g., portability, robustness, durability, low cost, and high flux. The VUV lamp may contribute to the development of SPI-related highly sensitive detection technologies.

Abstract
Photodissociation action spectroscopy has made a great progress in expanding investigations of gas-phase ion structures. This review deals with aspects of gas-phase ion electronic excitations that result in wavelength-dependent dissociation and light emission via fluorescence, chiefly covering the ultraviolet and visible regions of the spectrum. The principles are briefly outlined and a few examples of instrumentation are presented. The main thrust of the review is to collect and selectively present applications of UV-vis action spectroscopy to studies of stable gas-phase ion structures and combinations of spectroscopy with ion mobility, collision-induced dissociation, and ion-ion reactions leading to the generation of reactive intermediates and electronic energy transfer.

Abstract
The gas phase offers the possibility to analyze organic molecules by ultraviolet-vacuum ultraviolet (UV-VUV) spectroscopy without any solvent effect or limitation in terms of spectral range due to absorption by the solvent. Up to now, the size and chemical composition of neutral molecular systems under study have been limited by the use of vaporization methods based on thermal heating. Soft sources of gas-phase thermolabile molecular systems such as electrospray or matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization are appealing alternatives to heating-based techniques, but they lead to the production of ions. In such cases, UV-VUV action spectroscopy is then the method of choice to study the electronic structure and corresponding photodynamics of these gas-phase molecular ions. However, previous investigations have shown that the UV-VUV action spectrum of a given molecular ion depends on the charge state, which in many cases might be a caveat. Here, by means of synchrotron radiation coupled to mass spectrometry and through the test case of the glycopeptide antibiotic vancomycin noncovalently bound to a deprotonated small peptide, we show that the UV-VUV photofragmentation spectrum of neutral thermally fragile organic molecules can be obtained via charge-tagging action spectroscopy.

Abstract
We present experiments where extreme ultraviolet femtosecond light pulses are used to photoexcite large molecular ions at high internal energy. This is done by combining an electrospray ionization source and a mass spectrometer with a pulsed light source based on high harmonic generation. This allows one to study the interaction between high energy photons and mass selected ions in conditions that are accessible on large-scale facilities. We show that even without an ion trapping device, systems as large as a protein can be studied. We observe light induced dissociative ionization and proton migration in model systems such as reserpine, insulin and cytochrome c. These results offer new perspectives to perform time-resolved experiments with ultrashort pulses at the heart of the emerging field of attosecond chemistry.

Abstract
Photoresist materials are being optimized for the recently introduced Extreme Ultraviolet (EUV) photolithographic technology. Organometallic compounds are potential candidates for replacing the ubiquitous polymer-based chemically amplified resists. Tin (Sn) has a particularly large absorption cross section for EUV light (13.5 nm, 92 eV), which could lead to a lower required EUV dose for achieving the desired solubility change (improved sensitivity). However, the fundamental interaction between organometallic materials and higher energy photons is poorly understood. In this work, we exposed n-butyltin-oxo cage dications (M2+) in the gas phase to photons in the energy range 4-35 eV to explore their fundamental photoreactivity. Photoproducts were detected using mass spectrometry. Homolytic cleavage of tin-carbon bonds was observed for all photon energies above the onset of electronic absorption at ∼5 eV (∼250 nm), leading to photoproducts which have lost one or more of the attached butyl groups (Bu). Above 12 eV (<103 nm), dissociative photoionization occurred for the dication (M2+), competing with the neutral loss channels. The photoionization threshold is lowered by approximately 2 eV when one counterion (triflate, OTf- or tosylate, OTs-) is attached to the tin-oxo cage (MOTf+ and MOTs+). This threshold is expected to be even lower if each tin-oxo cage is attached to two counterions, as is the case in a solid film of tin-oxo cages. Addition of counterions also affected the fragmentation pathways; photoexcitation of (MX)+ (X = counterion, OTf or OTs) always led to formation of (MX-2Bu)+ rather than (MX-Bu)+. MOTs+ was much more reactive than MOTf+ in terms of reaction products per absorbed photon. A possible explanation for this is proposed, which involves the counterion reacting with the initially formed tin-based radical.

Abstract
CONTEXT As a part of interstellar dust, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are processed by the interaction with vacuum ultra-violet (VUV) photons that are emitted by hot young stars. This interaction leads to the emission of the well-known aromatic infrared bands but also of electrons, which can significantly contribute to the heating of the interstellar gas. AIMS Our aim is to investigate the impact of molecular size on the photoionization properties of cationic PAHs. METHODS Trapped PAH cations of sizes between 30 and 48 carbon atoms were submitted to VUV photons in the range of 9 to 20 eV from the DESIRS beamline at the synchrotron SOLEIL. All resulting photoproducts including dications and fragment cations were mass-analyzed and recorded as a function of photon energy. RESULTS Photoionization is found to be predominant over dissociation at all energies, which differs from an earlier study on smaller PAHs. The photoionization branching ratio reaches 0.98 at 20 eV for the largest studied PAH. The photoionization threshold is observed to be between 9.1 and 10.2 eV, in agreement with the evolution of the ionization potential with size. Ionization cross sections were indirectly obtained and photoionization yields extracted from their ratio with theoretical photoabsorption cross sections, which were calculated using time-dependent density functional theory. An analytical function was derived to calculate this yield for a given molecular size. CONCLUSIONS Large PAH cations could be efficiently ionized in H i regions and provide a contribution to the heating of the gas by photoelectric effect. Also, at the border of or in H ii regions, PAHs could be exposed to photons of energy higher than 13.6 eV. Our work provides recipes to be used in astronomical models to quantify these points.

Abstract
RATIONALE Methods for isomer discrimination by mass spectroscopy are of increasing interest. Here we describe the development of a three-dimensional ion trap for infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy that enables the acquisition of the infrared spectrum of selected ions in the gas phase. This system is suitable for the study of a myriad of chemical systems, including isomer mixtures. METHODS A modified three-dimensional ion trap was coupled to a CO2 laser and an optical parametric oscillator/optical parametric amplifier (OPO/OPA) system operating in the range 2300 to 4000 cm-1 . Density functional theory vibrational frequency calculations were carried out to support spectral assignments. RESULTS Detailed descriptions of the interface between the laser and the mass spectrometer, the hardware to control the laser systems, the automated system for IRMPD spectrum acquisition and data management are presented. The optimization of the crystal position of the OPO/OPA system to maximize the spectroscopic response under low-power laser radiation is also discussed. CONCLUSIONS OPO/OPA and CO2 laser-assisted dissociation of gas-phase ions was successfully achieved. The system was validated by acquiring the IRMPD spectra of model species and comparing with literature data. Two isomeric alkaloids of high economic importance were characterized to demonstrate the potential of this technique, which is now available as an open IRMPD spectroscopy facility in Brazil.

Abstract
RATIONALE Previous studies found that charge state could affect both specific and nonspecific binding of protein-metal ion interactions in nanoelectrospray ionization mass spectrometry (nESI-MS). However, the two kinds of interactions have been studied individually in spite of the problem that they often coexist in the same system. Thus, it is necessary to study the effects of charge state on specific and nonspecific protein-metal ion interactions in one system to reveal more accurate binding state. METHODS The HIV-1 nucleocapsid protein (NCp7(31-55)) which can bind specifically and nonspecifically to Zn2+ served as the model to show the charge-dependent protein-metal ion interactions. Hydrogen/deuterium exchange (HDX) and photodissociation (PD) were used to demonstrate that specific binding state was correlated with protein structure. In addition to NCp7(31-55), three other model proteins were used to investigate the reason for the charge-dependent nonspecific binding. RESULTS For specific binding, we proposed that protein ions with different charge states had different conformations. The HDX results showed that labile protons in the NCp7(31-55)-Zn complex were exchanged in a charge-state-dependent way. The PD experiments revealed differential fragment yields for different charge states. For nonspecific binding, higher charge states had more Zn2+ additions, but less SO4 2- additions. The effects of charge states on nonspecific binding levels were entirely the opposite for Zn2+ and SO4 2- . These results could reveal that the nonspecific binding was caused by electrostatic interaction. CONCLUSIONS For specific binding, NCp7(31-55) with lower charge states have folding and undenatured structures. The binding states of lower charge states can better reflect more native binding states. For nonspecific binding, when multiple metal ions adduct to proteins, the proteins have more net positive charges, which tend to generate higher charge ions during electrospray.

Abstract
Tandem mass spectrometry represents an important analytical tool to unravel molecular structures and to study the gas-phase behavior of organic molecules. Besides commonly used methods like collision-induced dissociation and electron capture or transfer dissociation, new ultraviolet light-based techniques have the potential to synergistically add to the activation methods. Here, we present a new simple, yet robust, experimental design for polychromatic activation of trapped ions using the 115-160 nm output of a commercially available deuterium lamp. The resulting continuous dissociative excitation with photons of a wide energy range from 7.7 to 10.8 eV is studied for a comprehensive set of analyte classes in both positive and negative ion modes. While being simple, affordable, compact, and of low maintenance, the new setup initiates fragmentation of most precursor ions via their known dissociation pathways. Additionally, some new fragmentation patterns were discovered. Especially, electron loss and electron capture reactions with subsequent fragmentations were observed. For oligonucleotides, peptides, carbohydrates, and organic dyes, in comparison to collision-induced dissociation, a significantly wider fragment distribution was obtained, resulting in an information increase. Since the individual photons carry enough energy to post-ionize the nascent fragments, a permanent vacuum ultraviolet light exposure inside the ion trap potentially goes along with a general increase in detection capability.

Abstract
Action spectroscopy using photon excitation in the VUV range (photon energy 4.5-9 eV) was performed on protonated uracil (UraH+) and uridine (UrdH+). The precursor ions with m/ z 113 and m/ z 245, respectively, were produced by an electrospray ionization source and accumulated inside a quadrupole ion trap mass spectrometer. After irradiation with tunable synchrotron radiation, product ion mass spectra were obtained. Fragment yields as a function of excitation energy show several maxima that can be attributed to the photoexcitation into different electronic states. For uracil, vertically excited states were calculated using the equation-of-motion coupled cluster approach and compared to the observed maxima. This allows to establish correlations between electronic states and the resulting fragment masses and can thus help to disentangle the complex de-excitation and fragmentation pathways of nucleic acid building blocks. Photofragmentation of the nucleoside uridine shows a significantly lower variety of fragments, indicating stabilization of the nucleobase by the attached sugar.

Abstract
Perfluorocarbons, a class of fully fluorinated compounds, are highly persistent and toxic pollutants that are receiving increasing attention due to their widespread environmental distribution. In this study, attention was focused on one compound in particular, namely, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). The first investigation of the UV/VUV photochemistry of the PFOA anion in the gas phase by action spectroscopy of selected ions is reported. Two main relaxation channels were identified: photodissociation and photodetachment. Absolute cross sections for the individual observed processes were measured. DFT calculations and natural transition orbital analysis were carried out to help in the interpretation of the experimental results.

Abstract
The nonapeptide oxytocin (OT) is used as a model sulfur-containing peptide to study the damage induced by vacuum UV (VUV) radiations. In particular, the effect of the presence (or absence in reduced OT) of oxytocin's internal disulfide bridge is evaluated in terms of photo-fragmentation yield and nature of the photo-fragments. Intact, as well as reduced, OT is studied as dianions and radical anions. Radical anions are prepared and photo-fragmented in two-color experiments (UV + VUV) in a linear ion trap. VUV photo-fragmentation patterns are analyzed and compared, and radical-induced mechanisms are proposed. The effect of VUV is principally to ionize but secondary fragmentation is also observed. This secondary fragmentation seems to be considerably enabled by the initial position of the radical on the molecule. In particular, the possibility to form a radical on free cysteines seems to increase the susceptibility to VUV fragmentation. Interestingly, disulfide bridges, which are fundamental for protein structure, could also be responsible for an increased resistance to ionizing radiations. Graphical Abstract.

Abstract
Single-photon, two-electron photodetachment from nickel phthalocyanine tetrasulfonic acid tetra anions, [NiPc](4-), was examined in the gas-phase using a linear ion trap coupled to the DESIRS VUV beamline of the SOLEIL Synchrotron. This system was chosen since it has a low detachment energy, known charge localization, and well-defined geometrical and electronic structures. A threshold for two-electron loss is observed at 10.2 eV, around 1 eV lower than previously observed double detachment thresholds on multiple charged protein anions. The photodetachment energy of [NiPc](4-) has been previously determined to be 3.5 eV and the photodetachment energy of [NiPc](3-•) is determined in this work to be 4.3 eV. The observed single photon double electron detachment threshold is hence 5.9 eV higher than the energy required for sequential single electron loss. Possible mechanisms are for double photodetachment are discussed. These observations pave the way toward new, exciting experiments for probing double photodetachment at relatively low energies, including correlation measurements on emitted photoelectrons.

Abstract
The activation of ions by extreme-energy photons (XUV) produced by a synchrotron radiation beamline is a powerful method for characterizing complex glycans using tandem mass spectrometry (MS). As previously described, this activation method leads to rich fragmentation spectra with many structurally valuable cross-ring cleavages while maintaining labile modifications on the glycan structures. However, until now, the tandem MS event was too long to be compatible with liquid chromatography elution times. In this work, the duty cycle of the activation and detection of fragments was shortened, and the background signal on the spectra was drastically reduced. Both improvements allowed, for the first time, the successful coupling of a UHPLC system to XUV-activated tandem MS. The approach was used to characterize a complex mixture of oligo-porphyrans, which are a class of highly sulfated oligosaccharides, in a fully automated way. Due to an enhanced dynamic range and an increased sensitivity, some hypothetical structures of low abundance have been unequivocally confirmed in this study and others have been revised. Some previously undescribed species of oligo-porphyrans that exhibit lateral branching have been fully resolved. This work contributes to the scarce knowledge of the structure of porphyrans in red algae and pushes the current capacities of XUV-activation tandem MS by demonstrating the possibility of a direct coupling with UHPLC. This study will considerably broaden the applicability and practicality of this method in many fields of analytical biology.

Abstract
Interstellar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are strongly affected by the absorption of vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photons in the interstellar medium (ISM), yet the branching ratio between ionization and fragmentation is poorly studied. This is crucial for the stability and charge state of PAHs in the ISM in different environments, affecting in turn the chemistry, the energy balance, and the contribution of PAHs to the extinction and emission curves. We studied the interaction of PAH cations with VUV photons in the 7 - 20 eV range from the synchrotron SOLEIL beamline, DESIRS. We recorded by action spectroscopy the relative intensities of photo-fragmentation and photo-ionization for a set of eight PAH cations ranging in size from 14 to 24 carbon atoms, with different structures. At photon energies below ~13.6 eV fragmentation dominates for the smaller species, while for larger species ionization is immediately competitive after the second ionization potential (IP). At higher photon energies, all species behave similarly, the ionization yield gradually increases, leveling off between 0.8 and 0.9 at ~18 eV. Among isomers, PAH structure appears to mainly affect the fragmentation cross section, but not the ionization cross section. We also measured the second IP for all species and the third IP for two of them, all are in good agreement with theoretical ones confirming that PAH cations can be further ionized in the diffuse ISM. Determining actual PAH dication abundances in the ISM will require detailed modeling. Our measured photo-ionization yields for several PAH cations provide a necessary ingredient for such models.

Abstract
Photon activation of ions in the visible and ultraviolet range attracts a growing interest, partly for its promising applications in tandem mass spectrometry. However, this task is not trivial, as it requires notably high brilliance photon sources. Hence, most of the work in that field has been performed using lasers. Synchrotron radiation is a source continuously tunable over a wide photon energy range and which possesses the necessary characteristics for ion activation. This review focuses on the array of applications of synchrotron radiation in photon activation of ions ranging from near UV to soft X-rays.

Abstract
Tandem mass spectrometry (MS-MS) is a generic term evoking techniques dedicated to structural analysis, detection or quantification of molecules based on dissociation of a precursor ion into fragments. Searching for the most informative fragmentation patterns has led to the development of a vast array of activation modes that offer complementary ion reactivity and dissociation pathways. Collisional activation of ions using atoms, molecules or surface resulting in unimolecular dissociation of activated ions still plays a key role in tandem mass spectrometry. The discovery of electron capture dissociation (ECD) and then the development of other electron-ion or ion/ion reaction methods, constituted a significant breakthrough, especially for structural analysis of large biomolecules. Similarly, photon activation opened promising new frontiers in ion fragmentation owing to the ability of tightly controlled internal energy deposition and easy implementation on commercial instruments. Ion activation by photons includes slow heating methods such as infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) and black-body infrared radiative dissociation (BIRD) and higher energy methods like ultra-violet photodissociation (UVPD) and electron photo detachment dissociation (EPD). EPD occurs after UV irradiation of multiply negatively charged ions resulting in the formation of oxidized radical anions. The present paper reviews the hypothesis regarding the mechanisms of electron photo-detachment, radical formation and direct or activated dissociation pathways that support the observation of odd and even electron product ions. Finally, the value of EPD as a complementary structural analysis tool is illustrated through selected examples of synthetic polymers, oligonucleotides, polypeptides, lipids, and polysaccharides.

Abstract
The photodissociation of gaseous protonated adenosine 5'-monophosphate (AMP) and the same system hydrated with one water molecule has been investigated in the 4 to 13 eV photon energy range by coupling a linear quadrupole ion trap with a synchrotron radiation beamline. The dissociation of the bare AMP cation upon absorption of a single ultraviolet (UV) photon below the ionization energy (IE) almost exclusively produces the protonated adenine base, with a measured photodissociation yield showing spectroscopic features with dominant absorption bands located at 4.75 and 6.5 eV, found in agreement with TD-DFT calculations. Nevertheless, the addition of a single water molecule to the system modifies the dissociation energy dependence and strongly suppresses the cleavage of the glycosidic CN bond below the IE. Both the experimental and theoretical results suggest that a single solvent molecule can intrinsically influence the structure and physicochemical properties of the AMP cation, including its UV induced dissociation pattern, beyond the simple water evaporation.

Abstract
One-photon multiple ionization is a signature of dynamical electron correlations in atoms and small molecules, as observed in the Auger process when Auger electron emission follows core-shell ionization. In such a process, the high energy needed to remove several electrons is due to the strong Coulombic attraction between the last departing electron(s) and the ionic core. Multiply negatively charged molecules offer the possibility to overcome the Coulombic attraction, opening the way for multielectron photodetachment following valence shell excitation. Here photodetachment studies have been performed on electrosprayed protein polyanions using vacuum ultraviolet synchrotron radiation coupled to a radiofrequency ion trap. Double, triple, and quadruple electron emissions from protein polyanions resulting from single-photon excitation in the valence shell were observed with ionization thresholds below 20 eV photon energy. This suggests the existence of large electronic correlations in proteins between weakly bound electrons standing on distant sites. Besides, the resulting multiradical polyanions appear to be remarkably stable, an important issue in radiobiology.

Abstract
We studied the optical properties of gas-phase polysaccharides (maltose, maltotetraose, and maltohexaose) ions by action spectroscopy using the coupling between a quadrupole ion trap and a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) beamline at the SOLEIL synchrotron radiation facility (France) in the 7 to 18 eV range. The spectra provide unique benchmarks for evaluation of theoretical data on electronic transitions of model carbohydrates in the VUV range. The effects of the nature of the charge held by polysaccharide ions on the relaxation processes were also explored. Finally the effect of isomerization of polysaccharides (with melezitose and raffinose) on their photofragmentation with VUV photons is presented.

Abstract
DESIRS is a new undulator-based VUV beamline on the 2.75 GeV storage ring SOLEIL (France) optimized for gas-phase studies of molecular and electronic structures, reactivity and polarization-dependent photodynamics on model or actual systems encountered in the universe, atmosphere and biosphere. It is equipped with two dedicated endstations: a VUV Fourier-transform spectrometer (FTS) for ultra-high-resolution absorption spectroscopy (resolving power up to 10(6)) and an electron/ion imaging coincidence spectrometer. The photon characteristics necessary to fulfill its scientific mission are: high flux in the 5-40 eV range, high spectral purity, high resolution, and variable and well calibrated polarizations. The photon source is a 10 m-long pure electromagnetic variable-polarization undulator producing light from the very near UV up to 40 eV on the fundamental emission with tailored elliptical polarization allowing fully calibrated quasi-perfect horizontal, vertical and circular polarizations, as measured with an in situ VUV polarimeter with absolute polarization rates close to unity, to be obtained at the sample location. The optical design includes a beam waist allowing the implementation of a gas filter to suppress the undulator high harmonics. This harmonic-free radiation can be steered toward the FTS for absorption experiments, or go through a highly efficient pre-focusing optical system, based on a toroidal mirror and a reflective corrector plate similar to a Schmidt plate. The synchrotron radiation then enters a 6.65 m Eagle off-plane normal-incidence monochromator equipped with four gratings with different groove densities, from 200 to 4300 lines mm(-1), allowing the flux-to-resolution trade-off to be smoothly adjusted. The measured ultimate instrumental resolving powers are 124000 (174 µeV) around 21 eV and 250000 (54 µeV) around 13 eV, while the typical measured flux is in the 10(10)-10(11) photons s(-1) range in a 1/50000 bandwidth, and 10(12)-10(13) photons s(-1) in a 1/1000 bandwidth, which is very satisfactory although slightly below optical simulations. All of these features make DESIRS a state-of-the-art VUV beamline for spectroscopy and dichroism open to a broad scientific community.

Abstract
C, N, and O near-edge ion yield spectroscopy of 8+ selected electrosprayed cations of cytochrome c protein (12 kDa) has been performed by coupling a linear quadrupole ion trap with a soft X-ray beamline. The photoactivation tandem mass spectra were recorded as a function of the photon energy. Photoionization of the precursor, accompanied by CO2 loss, is the dominant relaxation process, showing high photoion stability following direct or resonant photoionization. The partial ion yields extracted from recorded mass spectra show significantly different behaviors for single and double ionization channels, which can be qualitatively explained by different Auger decay mechanisms. However, the single ionization spectra reveal characteristic structures when compared to existing near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra from thin films of peptides and proteins. Therefore, the present experiment opens up new avenues for near-edge X-ray spectroscopy of macromolecules in the gas phase, overcoming the radiation damage issue or the environmental effects as due to the surface, intermolecular interactions, and solvent.
