Structure evolution of nanodiamond aggregates: a SANS and USANS study

Nanodiamonds (NDs) produced by two different techniques have been studied by ultra-small- (USANS) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS): (i) produced by the detonation of explosives in an oxygen-deficient atmosphere (TNT + hexogen), which results in the production of detonation nanodiamonds, and (ii) produced by laser ablation of a carbon–hydro­carbon mixture. The size distribution of the particles and the composition of the outer layers are expected to vary depending on the source of the NDs.

Ultra-small-angle neutron scattering (USANS) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) measurements, covering length scales from micrometres to nanometres, were made to investigate the structure of nanodiamonds (NDs) and their suspensions. These nanodiamonds were produced by two different techniques, namely by the detonation method and by the laser ablation of a carbon–hydro­carbon mixture. The (U)SANS results indicated the presence of structures four orders of magnitude larger than the dimensions of a single ND particle, consisting of aggregations of ND particles. This aggregation of the ND particles was studied by employing the contrast variation technique. Two different solvents, namely H₂O and dimethyl sulfoxide (and their deuterated counterparts), were used to understand the role of hydrogen in the shape and size of the aggregates. The analysis of experimental data from SANS measurements also reveals the ND particles to have an ellipsoidal structure. Using a defined shape model and the SANS contrast variation technique, it was possible to characterize the non-diamond outer shell of the particles and determine the outer layer thickness. This clarification of the structure of the NDs will allow better preparation of suspensions/samples for various applications. Understanding the structure of NDs at multiple length scales also provides crucial knowledge of particle–particle interaction and its effect on the aggregation structures.

Unraveling agglomeration and deagglomeration in aqueous colloidal dispersions of very small tin dioxide nanoparticles

HYPOTHESIS

Understanding deagglomeration, agglomerate formation and structure for very small nanoparticles (NPs), due to their more facile agglomeration, is critical for processing or tailoring agglomerates for nanostructured materials. We propose that by controlling and fine-tuning the interplay of agglomeration (colloidal interaction) and deagglomeration (hydrodynamic forces), the design of agglomerate size, microstructure and morphology is possible even for very small NPs.

EXPERIMENTS

Here, we investigate very small SnO₂ NPs (10 nm) generated in the gas phase as model system. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) are used to study dispersions in aqueous media across the entire pH range (2-12) at various NaCl concentrations treated with ultrasound. Parallel to size and size distribution, agglomerate morphology and microstructure are analyzed by means of the mass fractal dimension, d_m and modeled with ab initio shape simulations. The critical coagulation concentration (CCC) is determined for the alkaline region where the SnO₂ NPs are highly charged.

FINDINGS

Quantitative analysis of SAXS and DLS data reveals that size and size distribution of the agglomerates depend similarly on the electrostatic interaction influenced by pH and salinity as observed by the zeta potential. In contrast d_m is mainly influenced by the salt concentration. Ab initio shape simulations support these experimental findings.

Colloids of detonation nanodiamond particles for advanced applications

Nanodiamond (ND) is one of the most attractive allotropic modification of carbon due to their unique physical and chemical properties. In the present review the current state of science and technology in the field of NDs is analyzed. ND can be used in various application and in different form e.g. as a dispersion phase in suspension, as a filler in composites, etc., so the sedimentation stability of ND in different media are under scrutiny. Thus, theoretical aspects of ND suspension coagulation mechanisms and the methods avoiding it were considered. The dependence of rheological behavior on particles modification was discussed as well. Various methods for the preparation and modification of NDs to obtain particles of various sizes on a nanometer scale with different physicochemical properties were reviewed. The area of practical application for NDs was considered on the example of polymer composites. The various manufacturing methods, mechanical properties and medical aspects for thermosetting, thermoplastic and elastomer ND composites were summarized.
