Measuring structural nonstationarity: The use of imaging information to quantify homogeneity and inhomogeneity

Heterogeneity is the concept we encounter in numerous research areas and everyday life. While "not mixing apples and oranges" is easy to grasp, a more quantitative approach to such segregation is not always readily available. Consider the problem from a different angle: To what extent does one have to make apples more orange and oranges more "apple-shaped" to put them into the same basket (according to their appearance alone)? This question highlights the central problem of the blurred interface between heterogeneous and homogeneous, which also depends on the metrics used for its identification. This work uncovers the physics of structural stationarity quantification, based on correlation functions (CFs) and clustering based on CFs different between image subregions. By applying the methodology to a wide variety of synthetic and real images of binary porous media, we confirmed computationally that only periodically unit-celled structures and images produced by stationary processes with resolutions close to infinity are strictly stationary. Natural structures without recurring unit cells are only weakly stationary. We established a physically meaningful definition for these stationarity types and their distinction from nonstationarity. In addition, the importance of information content of the chosen metrics is highlighted and discussed. We believe the methodology as proposed in this contribution will find its way into numerous research areas dealing with materials, structures, and measurements and modeling based on structural imaging information.

Structural Analysis of Molecular Materials Using the Pair Distribution Function

This is a review of atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis as applied to the study of molecular materials. The PDF method is a powerful approach to study short- and intermediate-range order in materials on the nanoscale. It may be obtained from total scattering measurements using X-rays, neutrons, or electrons, and it provides structural details when defects, disorder, or structural ambiguities obscure their elucidation directly in reciprocal space. While its uses in the study of inorganic crystals, glasses, and nanomaterials have been recently highlighted, significant progress has also been made in its application to molecular materials such as carbons, pharmaceuticals, polymers, liquids, coordination compounds, composites, and more. Here, an overview of applications toward a wide variety of molecular compounds (organic and inorganic) and systems with molecular components is presented. We then present pedagogical descriptions and tips for further implementation. Successful utilization of the method requires an interdisciplinary consolidation of material preparation, high quality scattering experimentation, data processing, model formulation, and attentive scrutiny of the results. It is hoped that this article will provide a useful reference to practitioners for PDF applications in a wide realm of molecular sciences, and help new practitioners to get started with this technique.

Hierarchical Optimization: Fast and Robust Multiscale Stochastic Reconstructions with Rescaled Correlation Functions

Stochastic reconstructions based on universal correlation functions allow obtaining spatial structures based on limited input data or to fuse multiscale images from different sources. Current application of such techniques is severely hampered by the computational cost of the annealing optimization procedure. In this study we propose a novel hierarchical annealing method based on rescaled correlation functions, which improves both accuracy and computational efficiency of reconstructions while not suffering from disadvantages of existing speeding-up techniques. A significant order of magnitude gains in computational efficiency now allows us to add more correlation functions into consideration and, thus, to further improve the accuracy of the method. In addition, the method provides a robust multiscale framework to solve the universal upscaling or downscaling problem. The novel algorithm is extensively tested on binary (two-phase) microstructures of different genesis. In spite of significant improvements already in place, the current implementation of the hierarchical annealing method leaves significant room for additional accuracy and computational performance tweaks. As described here, (multiscale) stochastic reconstructions will find numerous applications in material and Earth sciences. Moreover, the proposed hierarchical approach can be readily applied to a wide spectrum of constrained optimization problems.

Unwarping GISAXS data

Grazing-incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) is a powerful technique for measuring the nanostructure of coatings and thin films. However, GISAXS data are plagued by distortions that complicate data analysis. The detector image is a warped representation of reciprocal space because of refraction, and overlapping scattering patterns appear because of reflection. A method is presented to unwarp GISAXS data, recovering an estimate of the true undistorted scattering pattern. The method consists of first generating a guess for the structure of the reciprocal-space scattering by solving for a mutually consistent prediction from the transmission and reflection sub-components. This initial guess is then iteratively refined by fitting experimental GISAXS images at multiple incident angles, using the distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) to convert between reciprocal space and detector space. This method converges to a high-quality reconstruction for the undistorted scattering, as validated by comparing with grazing-transmission scattering data. This new method for unwarping GISAXS images will broaden the applicability of grazing-incidence techniques, allowing experimenters to inspect undistorted visualizations of their data and allowing a broader range of analysis methods to be applied to GI data.

Scattering intensity limit value at very small angles

The existence of a limit of the sample scattering intensity, as the scattering vector approaches zero, requires and is ensured by the property that the mean value of the scattering density fluctuation over a volume V behaves asymptotically, at large V, as νV −1/2, ν being an appropriate constant. The limit of the normalized scattering intensity is then equal to ν2. The implications of this result are also analysed in the case of samples made up of two homogeneous phases.

A carbon nanopore model to quantify structure and kinetics of ion electrosorption with in situ small-angle X-ray scattering

In situ small-angle X-ray scattering was carried out on a custom-built supercapacitor cell and is presented together with a novel data analysis strategy to study the structure and kinetics of ion electrosorption in a nanoporous carbon electrode.
