It evaluates existing noise management and hearing conservation strategies, identifying key obstacles and exploring new technological solutions. While progress in developing protective devices and noise control technologies is evident, gaps in their widespread implementation persist. The study underscores the need for an integrated strategy combining regulatory compliance, technological advances, and targeted educational efforts. It advocates for global collaboration and policy development to safeguard the auditory health of aviation workers and proposes a strategic framework to enhance hearing conservation practices within the unique challenges of the aviation sector.

Directional Multi-Resonant Micro-Electromechanical System Acoustic Sensor for Low Frequency Detection

This paper reports on the design, modeling, and characterization of a multi-resonant, directional, MEMS acoustic sensor. The design builds on previous resonant MEMS sensor designs to broaden the sensor's usable bandwidth while maintaining a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). These improvements make the sensor more attractive for detecting and tracking sound sources with acoustic signatures that are broader than discrete tones. In-air sensor characterization was conducted in an anechoic chamber. The sensor was characterized underwater in a semi-anechoic pool and in a standing wave tube. The sensor demonstrated a cosine-like directionality, a maximum acoustic sensitivity of 47.6 V/Pa, and a maximum SNR of 88.6 dB, for 1 Pa sound pressure, over the bandwidth of the sensor circuitry (100 Hz-3 kHz). The presented design represents a significant improvement in sensor performance compared to similar resonant MEMS sensor designs. Increasing the sensitivity of a single-resonator design is typically associated with a decrease in bandwidth. This multi-resonant design overcomes that limitation.

Directional Resonant MEMS Acoustic Sensor and Associated Acoustic Vector Sensor

This paper reports on the design, modeling, analysis, and evaluation of a micro-electromechanical systems acoustic sensor and the novel design of an acoustic vector sensor array (AVS) which utilized this acoustic sensor. This research builds upon previous work conducted to develop a small, lightweight, portable system for the detection and location of quiet or distant acoustic sources of interest. This study also reports on the underwater operation of this sensor and AVS. Studies were conducted in the lab and in the field utilizing multiple acoustic sources (e.g., generated tones, gun shots, drones). The sensor operates at resonance, providing for high acoustic sensitivity and a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The sensor demonstrated a maximum SNR of 88 dB with an associated sensitivity of -84.6 dB re 1 V/μPa (59 V/Pa). The sensor design can be adjusted to set a specified resonant frequency to align with a known acoustic signature of interest. The AVS demonstrated an unambiguous, 360-degree, in-plane, azimuthal coverage and was able to provide an acoustic direction of arrival to an average error of within 3.5° during field experiments. The results of this research demonstrate the potential usefulness of this sensor and AVS design for specific applications.

Recent Trends in Structures and Interfaces of MEMS Transducers for Audio Applications: A Review

In recent years, Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology has had an impressive impact in the field of acoustic transducers, allowing the development of smart, low-cost, and compact audio systems that are employed in a wide variety of highly topical applications (consumer devices, medical equipment, automotive systems, and many more). This review, besides analyzing the main integrated sound transduction principles typically exploited, surveys the current State-of-the-Art scenario, presenting the recent performance advances and trends of MEMS microphones and speakers. In addition, the interface Integrated Circuits (ICs) needed to properly read the sensed signals or, on the other hand, to drive the actuation structures are addressed with the aim of offering a complete overview of the currently adopted solutions.

Noise and Health: Review

Noise in human societies is unavoidable, but it tends to become a modern epidemic that induces various detrimental effects to several organs and functions in humans. Increased cardiovascular danger, anxiety and sleep disturbance are just few of these effects. It is noteworthy that children, even neonates and their developing organism are especially vulnerable to noise-related health problems. Noise is measured with special noise-meters. These devices express results in decibels by transforming random noise to a continuous sound. This sound is characterized by equivalent acoustic energy to the random noise for a defined time interval. Human auditory apparatus is principally endangered by acute noises but also by chronic noise exposure, in the context of both occupational and recreational activities. Various mechanisms are implicated in the pathogenesis of noise-induced hearing loss that can cause either temporary or permanent damage. Among them, emphasis is given to the impairment by free radicals and inflammatory mediators, to the activation of apoptotic molecular pathways, but also to glutamate excitotoxicity. A hidden hearing loss, synaptopathy, is attributed to the latter. The irreversible nature of hearing loss, as well as the idiosyncratic sensitivity of individuals, imposes the necessity of early diagnosis of auditory impairment by noise. Super high frequency audiograms, otoacoustic emissions and electrophysiological examinations can address diagnosis. Thankfully, there is extensive research on acoustic trauma therapeutic approaches. However, until we succeed in regenerating the sensory organ of hearing, chronic noise-induced hearing loss cannot be treated. Thus, it is fundamental that society protects people from noise, by laws and regulations.

Dual Band MEMS Directional Acoustic Sensor for Near Resonance Operation

In this paper, we report on the design and characterization of a microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) directional sensor inspired by the tympana configuration of the parasitic fly Ormia ochracea. The sensor is meant to be operated at resonance and act as a natural filter for the undesirable frequency bands. By means of breaking the symmetry of a pair of coupled bridged membranes, two independent bending vibrational modes can be excited. The electronic output, obtained by the transduction of the vibration to differential capacitance and then voltage through charge amplifiers, can be manipulated to tailor the frequency response of the sensor. Four different frequency characteristics were demonstrated. The sensor exhibits, at resonance, mechanical sensitivity around 6 μm/Pa and electrical sensitivity around 13 V/Pa. The noise was thoroughly characterized, and it was found that the sensor die, rather than the fundamental vibration, induces the predominant part of the noise. The computed average signal-to-noise (SNR) ratio in the pass band is about 91 dB. This result, in combination with an accurate dipole-like directional response, indicates that this type of directional sensor can be designed to exhibit high SNR and selectable frequency responses demanded by different applications.

Converging Telco-Grade Solutions 5G and beyond to Support Production in Industry 4.0

The Industry 4.0 initiative has been showing the way for industrial production to optimize operations based on collecting, processing, and sharing data. There are new requirements on the production floor: flexible but ultra-reliable, low latency wireless communications through interoperable systems can share data. Further challenges of data sharing and storage arise when diverse systems come into play at the Manufacturing Operations Management and Business Planning & Logistics levels. The emerging complex cyber-physical systems of systems need to be engineered with care. Regarding industrial requirements, the telecommunication industry has many similarities to production—including ultra-reliability, high complexity, and having humans “in-the-loop”. The current paper aims to provide an overview of converging telco-grade solutions that can be successfully applied in the wide sense of industrial production. These toolsets range from model-driven engineering through system interoperability frameworks, 5G- and 6G-supported manufacturing, and the telco-cloud to speech recognition in noisy environments.
