Ontogeny of collective behaviour

During their lifetime, superorganisms, like unitary organisms, undergo transformations that change the machinery of their collective behaviour. Here, we suggest that these transformations are largely understudied and propose that more systematic research into the ontogeny of collective behaviours is needed if we hope to better understand the link between proximate behavioural mechanisms and the development of collective adaptive functions. In particular, certain social insects engage in self-assemblage, forming dynamic and physically connected architectures with striking similarities to developing multicellular organisms, making them good model systems for ontogenetic studies of collective behaviour. However, exhaustive time series and three-dimensional data are required to thoroughly characterize the different life stages of the collective structures and the transitions between these stages. The well-established fields of embryology and developmental biology offer practical tools and theoretical frameworks that could speed up the acquisition of new knowledge about the formation, development, maturity and dissolution of social insect self-assemblages and, by extension, other superorganismal behaviours. We hope that this review will encourage an expansion of the ontogenetic perspective in the field of collective behaviour and, in particular, in self-assemblage research, which has far-reaching applications in robotics, computer science and regenerative medicine. A Hybrid Systems-Based Hierarchical Control Architecture for Heterogeneous Field Robot Teams

Field robot systems have recently been applied in a wide range of research fields. Further automation, development, and activation of such systems require cooperation among heterogeneous robots. Classical control theory is inefficient in managing large-scale complex dynamic systems. Therefore, a discrete-event system based on the supervisory control theory must be introduced to overcome this limitation. In this article, we propose a hybrid system-based hierarchical control architecture using a supervisory control-based high-level controller and a traditional control-based low-level controller. The hybrid system and its dynamics are modeled through a formal method, called hybrid automata, and the behavior specifications are designed to express the control objectives for cooperation. In addition, modular supervisors that are more scalable and maintainable than a centralized supervisory controller were synthesized. The proposed hybrid system and hierarchical control architecture were implemented, validated, and evaluated for performance through a physics-based simulator and field tests. The experimental results confirmed that the robot team satisfied the given specifications and presented systematic results, validating the efficiency of the proposed control architecture.

Development of a Combined Orchard Harvesting Robot Navigation System

Our research concerned the development of an autonomous robotic navigation system for orchard harvesting with a dual master-slave mode, the autonomous navigation tractor orchard transport robot being the master followed by a navigation orchard picking robot as the slave. This addresses the problem that in single master-slave navigation mode, agricultural combined harvesting equipment cannot stop repeatedly between rows of apple trees and drive continuously when turning. According to distances obtained from a global positioning system (GNSS), ground points were used to switch the navigation mode of the transport and picking robot. A cloth simulation filter (CSF) and random sample consensus (RANSAC) algorithm was used to obtain inter-row waypoints. The GNSS point was manually selected as the turn waypoint of the master and a kinematic model was used to compute the turn waypoints of the slave. Finally, we used a pure pursuit algorithm to track these waypoints sequentially to achieve master-slave navigation and ground head master-slave command navigation. The experimental results show that the data packet loss rate was less than 1.2% when the robot communicated in the orchard row within 50 m which meets the robot orchard communication requirements. The master-slave robot can achieve repeated stops in the row using follow navigation, which meets the demands of joint orchard harvesting. The maximum, minimum, mean and standard deviation of position deviation of the master robot were 5.3 cm, 0.8 cm, 2.4 cm, and 0.9 cm, respectively. The position deviations of the slave robot were larger than those of the master robot, with maximum, minimum, mean and standard deviation of 39.7 cm, 1.1 cm, 4.1 cm, and 5.6 cm, respectively. The maximum, minimum, mean and standard deviation of the following error between the master-slave robot were 4.4 cm, 0 cm, 1.3 cm, and 1 cm respectively. Concerning the ground head turn, the command navigation method allowed continuous turning, but the lateral deviation between robots was more than 0.3 m and less than 1 m, and the heading deviation was more than 10° and less than 90°.

Internet of Robotic Things in Smart Domains: Applications and Challenges

With the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, Internet of Things (IoT) and robotic systems are closely cooperating, reshaping their relations and managing to develop new-generation devices. Such disruptive technology corresponds to the backbone of the so-called Industry 4.0. The integration of robotic agents and IoT leads to the concept of the Internet of Robotic Things, in which innovation in digital systems is drawing new possibilities in both industrial and research fields, covering several domains such as manufacturing, agriculture, health, surveillance, and education, to name but a few. In this manuscript, the state-of-the-art of IoRT applications is outlined, aiming to mark their impact on several research fields, and focusing on the main open challenges of the integration of robotic technologies into smart spaces. IoRT technologies and applications are also discussed to underline their influence in everyday life, inducing the need for more research into remote and automated applications.
