ECG Classification Based on Wasserstein Scalar Curvature

Electrocardiograms (ECG) analysis is one of the most important ways to diagnose heart disease. This paper proposes an efficient ECG classification method based on Wasserstein scalar curvature to comprehend the connection between heart disease and the mathematical characteristics of ECG. The newly proposed method converts an ECG into a point cloud on the family of Gaussian distribution, where the pathological characteristics of ECG will be extracted by the Wasserstein geometric structure of the statistical manifold. Technically, this paper defines the histogram dispersion of Wasserstein scalar curvature, which can accurately describe the divergence between different heart diseases. By combining medical experience with mathematical ideas from geometry and data science, this paper provides a feasible algorithm for the new method, and the theoretical analysis of the algorithm is carried out. Digital experiments on the classical database with large samples show the new algorithm's accuracy and efficiency when dealing with the classification of heart disease.

The Identification of ECG Signals Using WT-UKF and IPSO-SVM

The biometric identification method is a current research hotspot in the pattern recognition field. Due to the advantages of electrocardiogram (ECG) signals, which are difficult to replicate and easy to obtain, ECG-based identity identification has become a new direction in biometric recognition research. In order to improve the accuracy of ECG signal identification, this paper proposes an ECG identification method based on a multi-scale wavelet transform combined with the unscented Kalman filter (WT-UKF) algorithm and the improved particle swarm optimization-support vector machine (IPSO-SVM). First, the WT-UKF algorithm can effectively eliminate the noise components and preserve the characteristics of ECG signals when denoising the ECG data. Then, the wavelet positioning method is used to detect the feature points of the denoised signals, and the obtained feature points are combined with multiple feature vectors to characterize the ECG signals, thus reducing the data dimension in identity identification. Finally, SVM is used for ECG signal identification, and the improved particle swarm optimization (IPSO) algorithm is used for parameter optimization in SVM. According to the analysis of simulation experiments, compared with the traditional WT denoising, the WT-UKF method proposed in this paper improves the accuracy of feature point detection and increases the final recognition rate by 1.5%. The highest recognition accuracy of a single individual in the entire ECG identification system achieves 100%, and the average recognition accuracy can reach 95.17%.

A Trigonometric Projection Method for Overcoming High Intensity Heart Rate Caused Waveform Deformation in Electrocardiogram Biometrics

Purpose

Although electrocardiogram (ECG) has been proven as a biometric for human identification, applying biometric technology remains challenging with diverse heart rate circumstances in which high intensity heart rate caused waveform deformation may not be known in advance when ECG templates are registered.

Methods

A calibration method that calculates the ratio of the length of an unidentified electrocardiogram signal to the length of an electrocardiogram template is proposed in this paper. Next, the R peak is used as an axis anchor point of a trigonometric projection (TP) to attain the displacement value. Finally, the unidentified ECG signal is calibrated according to the generated trigonometric value, which corresponds to the trigonometric projection degree of the ratio and the attained displacement measurement.

Results

The results reveal that the proposed method provides superior overall performance compared with that of the conventional downsampling method, based on the percentage root mean square difference (PRD), correlation coefficients, and mean square error (MSE).

Conclusion

The curve fitting equation directly maps from the heart rate levels to the TP degree without prior registration information. The proposed ECG calibration method offers a more robust system against heart rate interference when conducting ECG identification.

A Review on the Nonlinear Dynamical System Analysis of Electrocardiogram Signal

Electrocardiogram (ECG) signal analysis has received special attention of the researchers in the recent past because of its ability to divulge crucial information about the electrophysiology of the heart and the autonomic nervous system activity in a noninvasive manner. Analysis of the ECG signals has been explored using both linear and nonlinear methods. However, the nonlinear methods of ECG signal analysis are gaining popularity because of their robustness in feature extraction and classification. The current study presents a review of the nonlinear signal analysis methods, namely, reconstructed phase space analysis, Lyapunov exponents, correlation dimension, detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA), recurrence plot, Poincaré plot, approximate entropy, and sample entropy along with their recent applications in the ECG signal analysis.

Individual identification via electrocardiogram analysis

BACKGROUND

During last decade the use of ECG recordings in biometric recognition studies has increased. ECG characteristics made it suitable for subject identification: it is unique, present in all living individuals, and hard to forge. However, in spite of the great number of approaches found in literature, no agreement exists on the most appropriate methodology. This study aimed at providing a survey of the techniques used so far in ECG-based human identification. Specifically, a pattern recognition perspective is here proposed providing a unifying framework to appreciate previous studies and, hopefully, guide future research.

METHODS

We searched for papers on the subject from the earliest available date using relevant electronic databases (Medline, IEEEXplore, Scopus, and Web of Knowledge). The following terms were used in different combinations: electrocardiogram, ECG, human identification, biometric, authentication and individual variability. The electronic sources were last searched on 1st March 2015. In our selection we included published research on peer-reviewed journals, books chapters and conferences proceedings. The search was performed for English language documents.

RESULTS

100 pertinent papers were found. Number of subjects involved in the journal studies ranges from 10 to 502, age from 16 to 86, male and female subjects are generally present. Number of analysed leads varies as well as the recording conditions. Identification performance differs widely as well as verification rate. Many studies refer to publicly available databases (Physionet ECG databases repository) while others rely on proprietary recordings making difficult them to compare. As a measure of overall accuracy we computed a weighted average of the identification rate and equal error rate in authentication scenarios. Identification rate resulted equal to 94.95 % while the equal error rate equal to 0.92 %.

CONCLUSIONS

Biometric recognition is a mature field of research. Nevertheless, the use of physiological signals features, such as the ECG traits, needs further improvements. ECG features have the potential to be used in daily activities such as access control and patient handling as well as in wearable electronics applications. However, some barriers still limit its growth. Further analysis should be addressed on the use of single lead recordings and the study of features which are not dependent on the recording sites (e.g. fingers, hand palms). Moreover, it is expected that new techniques will be developed using fiducials and non-fiducial based features in order to catch the best of both approaches. ECG recognition in pathological subjects is also worth of additional investigations.

A method of ECG template extraction for biometrics applications

ECG has attracted widespread attention as one of the most important non-invasive physiological signals in healthcare-system related biometrics for its characteristics like ease-of-monitoring, individual uniqueness as well as important clinical value. This study proposes a method of dynamic threshold setting to extract the most stable ECG waveform as the template for the consequent ECG identification process. With the proposed method, the accuracy of ECG biometrics using the dynamic time wraping for difference measures has been significantly improved. Analysis results with the self-built electrocardiogram database show that the deployment of the proposed method was able to reduce the half total error rate of the ECG biometric system from 3.35% to 1.45%. Its average running time on the platform of android mobile terminal was around 0.06 seconds, and thus demonstrates acceptable real-time performance.
