Efficient Hardware Implementation of Real-Time Low-Power Movement Intention Detector System Using FFT and Adaptive Wavelet Transform

Convolutional spiking neural networks for intent detection based on anticipatory brain potentials using electroencephalogram

Spiking neural networks (SNNs) are receiving increased attention because they mimic synaptic connections in biological systems and produce spike trains, which can be approximated by binary values for computational efficiency. Recently, the addition of convolutional layers to combine the feature extraction power of convolutional networks with the computational efficiency of SNNs has been introduced. This paper studies the feasibility of using a convolutional spiking neural network (CSNN) to detect anticipatory slow cortical potentials (SCPs) related to braking intention in human participants using an electroencephalogram (EEG). Data was collected during an experiment wherein participants operated a remote-controlled vehicle on a testbed designed to simulate an urban environment. Participants were alerted to an incoming braking event via an audio countdown to elicit anticipatory potentials that were measured using an EEG. The CSNN's performance was compared to a standard CNN, EEGNet and three graph neural networks via 10-fold cross-validation. The CSNN outperformed all the other neural networks, and had a predictive accuracy of 99.06% with a true positive rate of 98.50%, a true negative rate of 99.20% and an F1-score of 0.98. Performance of the CSNN was comparable to the CNN in an ablation study using a subset of EEG channels that localized SCPs. Classification performance of the CSNN degraded only slightly when the floating-point EEG data were converted into spike trains via delta modulation to mimic synaptic connections.

ASW-Net: Adaptive Spectral Wavelet Network for Accurate Fetal ECG Extraction

Noninvasive fetal ECG (FECG) is of great significance for monitoring fetal health. However, it is challenging to extract FECG signals from the abdominal ECG signal (AECG) due to the complexity of the task: 1) FECG signals are routinely mixed with noise; 2) FECG signals are aliased with maternal ECG signals in the time and frequency domain. To solve such problems, an adaptive spectral wavelet network (ASW-Net) is proposed for FECG extraction, where the adaptive spectral wavelet module, which can improve the computational efficiency by replacing convolution operation with element-wise Hadamard product in the frequency domain, is first developed to extract FECG components with different frequencies; then, the residual attention module is devised to distinguish FECG signals from noise by capturing waveform details; finally, the inverse spectral wavelet module is designed to reconstruct FECG signals from multi-resolution FECG components. Experiments conducted on the benchmarks demonstrate that the proposed ASW-Net outperforms the state-of-the-art methods.

Coupling feature extraction method of resting state EEG Signals from amnestic mild cognitive impairment with type 2 diabetes mellitus based on weight permutation conditional mutual information

This study aimed to find a good coupling feature extraction method to effectively analyze resting state EEG signals (rsEEG) of amnestic mild cognitive impairment(aMCI) with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) and normal control (NC) with T2DM. A method of EEG signal coupling feature extraction based on weight permutation conditional mutual information (WPCMI) was proposed in this research. With the WPCMI method, coupling feature strength of two time series in Alpha1, Alpha2, Beta1, Beta2 and Gamma bands for aMCI with T2DM and NC with T2DM could be extracted respectively. Then selected three frequency bands coupling feature matrix with the help of multi-spectral image transformation method to map it as spectral image characteristics. And finally classified these characteristics through the convolution neural network method(CNN). For aMCI with T2DM and NC with T2DM, the highest classification accuracy of 96%, 95%, 95% could be achieved respectively in the combination of three frequency bands (Alpha1, Alpha2, Gamma), (Beta1, Beta2 and Gamma) and (Alpha2, Beta1, Beta2). This WPCMI method highlighted the coupling dynamic characteristics of EEG signals, and its classification performance was better than all previous methods in aMCI with T2DM diagnosis field. WPCMI method could be used as an effective biomarker to distinguish EEG signals of aMCI with T2DM and NC with T2DM. The coupling feature extraction method used in this paper provided a new perspective for the EEG analysis of aMCI with T2DM.

Design of System Level Architecture of Multi-Core with Array Mapping Based on Floating Processing Factor-Fast Fourier Transform for Health Informatics Application

In FFT algorithms memory access patterns prevent multiple architectures from achieving high machine use, particularly when parallel processing is needed to achieve the desired efficiency rates. Beginning with the extremely powerful FFT heart, the on-chip memory hierarchy for the multicored FFT processor, is co-designed and linked on-chip. We have shown that the Floating Processing Factor (FPPE) proposed achieves greater operating rate and lower power for the application of health informatics. This test mechanism aids in omission of faulty cores and autonomous detection also makes elegant multi-core architecture degradation feasible. Experimental results illustrate that the anticipated design is scalable widely in terms of performance overhead and hardware overhead which makes it appropriate to many-cores with more than a thousand processing cores through Low Power and High Speed.
