On the effect of body capacitance to ground in tetrapolar bioimpedance measurements

Estimation method for the anisotropic electrical conductivity of in vivo human muscles and fat between 10 kHz and 1 MHz

Objective. In low frequency dosimetry the variability in the electrical conductivity values assigned to body model tissues represents a major source of uncertainty. The aim of this study is to propose a method for estimating the conductivity of human anisotropic skeletal muscle and fat in vivo in the frequency range from 10 kHz to 1 MHz. Approach. A method based on bounded electrical impedance tomography was used. Bioimpedance measurements were performed on the legs of ten subjects. Anatomically realistic models of the legs were then created using magnetic resonance images. The inverse problem of the tissue conductivities was solved using the finite element method. The results were validated using resampling techniques. These findings were also used to study the effects of muscle anisotropy on magnetic field exposure. Main results. The estimated conductivities for anisotropic muscle were found to be in good agreement with values found in existing literature and the anisotropy was shown to decrease with increasing frequency, with the ratio of lateral to longitudinal conductivity increasing from 37% to 64%. The conductivity of fat was found to be almost a constant 0.07 S m−1 in the frequency range considered. Significance. The proposed method was shown to be a viable option when estimating in vivo conductivity of human tissue. The results can be used in numerical dosimetry calculations or as limits in future investigations studying conductivity with bioimpedance measurements.

Parasitic Effects on Electrical Bioimpedance Systems: Critical Review

Parasitic capacitance represents the main error source in measurement systems based on electrical impedance spectroscopy. The capacitive nature of electrodes' impedance in tetrapolar configuration can give origin to phase errors when electrodes are coupled to parasitic capacitances. Nevertheless, reactive charges in tissue excitation systems are susceptible to instability. Based on such a scenario, mitigating capacitive effects associated with the electrode is a requirement in order to reduce errors in the measurement system. A literature review about the main compensation techniques for parasitic capacitance was carried out. The selected studies were categorized into three groups: (i) compensation in electronic instrumentation; (ii) compensation in measurement processing, and (iii) compensation by negative impedance converters. The three analyzed methods emerged as effective against fixed capacitance. No method seemed capable of mitigating the effects of electrodes' capacitance, that changes in the frequency spectrum. The analysis has revealed the need for a method to compensate varying capacitances, since electrodes' impedance is unknown.

Cole-Impedance Model Representations of Right-Side Segmental Arm, Leg, and Full-Body Bioimpedances of Healthy Adults: Comparison of Fractional-Order

The passive electrical properties of a biological tissue, referred to as the tissue bioimpedance, are related to the underlying tissue physiology. These measurements are often well-represented by a fractional-order equivalent circuit model, referred to as the Cole-impedance model. Objective: Identify if there are differences in the fractional-order (α) of the Cole-impedance parameters that represent the segmental right-body, right-arm, and right-leg of adult participants. Hypothesis: Cole-impedance model parameters often associated with tissue geometry and fluid (R∞, R1, C) will be different between body segments, but parameters often associated with tissue type (α) will not show any statistical differences. Approach: A secondary analysis was applied to a dataset collected for an agreement study between bioimpedance spectroscopy devices and dual-energy X-ray absoptiometry, identifying the Cole-model parameters of the right-side body segments of N=174 participants using a particle swarm optimization approach. Statistical testing was applied to the different groups of Cole-model parameters to evaluate group differences and correlations of parameters with tissue features. Results: All Cole-impedance model parameters showed statistically significant differences between body segments. Significance: The physiological or geometric features of biological tissues that are linked with the fractional-order (α) of data represented by the Cole-impedance model requires further study to elucidate.

Wireless Body Sensor Communication Systems Based on UWB and IBC Technologies: State-of-the-Art and Open Challenges

In recent years there has been an increasing need for miniature, low-cost, commercially accessible, and user-friendly sensor solutions for wireless body area networks (WBAN), which has led to the adoption of new physical communication interfaces providing distinctive advantages over traditional wireless technologies. Ultra-wideband (UWB) and intrabody communication (IBC) have been the subject of intensive research in recent years due to their promising characteristics as means for short-range, low-power, and low-data-rate wireless interfaces for interconnection of various sensors and devices placed on, inside, or in the close vicinity of the human body. The need for safe and standardized solutions has resulted in the development of two relevant standards, IEEE 802.15.4 (for UWB) and IEEE 802.15.6 (for UWB and IBC), respectively. This paper presents an in-depth overview of recent studies and advances in the field of application of UWB and IBC technologies for wireless body sensor communication systems.

Foreign Object Detection for Electric Vehicle Wireless Charging

Wireless power transfer technology is being widely used in electric vehicle wireless-charging applications, and foreign object detection (FOD) is an important module that is needed to satisfy the transmission and safety requirements. FOD mostly includes two key parts: metal object detection (MOD) and living object detection (LOD), which should be implemented during the charging process. In this paper, equivalent circuit models of a metal object and a living object are proposed, and the FOD methods are reviewed and analyzed within a unified framework based on the proposed FOD models. A comparison of these detection methods and future challenges is also discussed. Based on these analyses, detection methods that employ an additional circuit for detection are recommended for FOD in electric vehicle wireless-charging applications.

Smart Bioimpedance Spectroscopy Device for Body Composition Estimation

The purpose of this work is to describe a first approach to a smart bioimpedance spectroscopy device for its application to the estimation of body composition. The proposed device is capable of carrying out bioimpedance measurements in multiple configurable frequencies, processing the data to obtain the modulus and the bioimpedance phase in each of the frequencies, and transmitting the processed information wirelessly. Another novelty of this work is a new algorithm for the identification of Cole model parameters, which is the basis of body composition estimation through bioimpedance spectroscopy analysis. Against other proposals, the main advantages of the proposed method are its robustness against parasitic effects by employing an extended version of Cole model with phase delay and three dispersions, its simplicity and low computational load. The results obtained in a validation study with respiratory patients show the accuracy and feasibility of the proposed technology for bioimpedance measurements. The precision and validity of the algorithm was also proven in a validation study with peritoneal dialysis patients. The proposed method was the most accurate compared with other existing algorithms. Moreover, in those cases affected by parasitic effects the proposed algorithm provided better approximations to the bioimpedance values than a reference device.

Effects of stray capacitance to ground in three electrode monopolar needle bioimpedance measurements

Positive phase angle is documented and analyzed in a three electrode monopolar needle measurement. Inductance equivalent behavior of the stray capacitance to ground is described as error source in a non-inductive sample measurement.

A Bioimpedance Analysis Platform for Amputee Residual Limb Assessment

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this research was to develop a bioimpedance platform for monitoring fluid volume in residual limbs of people with trans-tibial limb loss using prostheses.

METHODS

A customized multifrequency current stimulus profile was sent to thin flat electrodes positioned on the thigh and distal residual limb. The applied current signal and sensed voltage signals from four pairs of electrodes located on the anterior and posterior surfaces were demodulated into resistive and reactive components. An established electrical model (Cole) and segmental limb geometry model were used to convert results to extracellular and intracellular fluid volumes. Bench tests and testing on amputee participants were conducted to optimize the stimulus profile and electrode design and layout.

RESULTS

The proximal current injection electrode needed to be at least 25 cm from the proximal voltage sensing electrode. A thin layer of hydrogel needed to be present during testing to ensure good electrical coupling. Using a burst duration of 2.0 ms, intermission interval of 100 μs, and sampling delay of 10 μs at each of 24 frequencies except 5 kHz, which required a 200-μs sampling delay, the system achieved a sampling rate of 19.7 Hz.

CONCLUSION

The designed bioimpedance platform allowed system settings and electrode layouts and positions to be optimized for amputee limb fluid volume measurement.

SIGNIFICANCE

The system will be useful toward identifying and ranking prosthetic design features and participant characteristics that impact residual limb fluid volume.
