Application of bacteriophages in biopolymer-based functional food packaging films

Recently, food spoilage caused by pathogens has been increasing. Therefore, applying control strategies is essential. Bacteriophages can potentially reduce this problem due to their host specificity, ability to inhibit bacterial growth, and extend the shelf life of food. When bacteriophages are applied directly to food, their antibacterial activity is lost. In this regard, bacteriophage-loaded biopolymers offer an excellent option to improve food safety by extending their shelf life. Applying bacteriophages in food preservation requires comprehensive and structured information on their isolation, culturing, storage, and encapsulation in biopolymers for active food packaging applications. This review focuses on using bacteriophages in food packaging and preservation. It discusses the methods for phage application on food, their use for polymer formulation and functionalization, and their effect in enhancing food matrix properties to obtain maximum antibacterial activity in food model systems.

Large-Kernel Attention for 3D Medical Image Segmentation

Automated segmentation of multiple organs and tumors from 3D medical images such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) scans using deep learning methods can aid in diagnosing and treating cancer. However, organs often overlap and are complexly connected, characterized by extensive anatomical variation and low contrast. In addition, the diversity of tumor shape, location, and appearance, coupled with the dominance of background voxels, makes accurate 3D medical image segmentation difficult. In this paper, a novel 3D large-kernel (LK) attention module is proposed to address these problems to achieve accurate multi-organ segmentation and tumor segmentation. The advantages of biologically inspired self-attention and convolution are combined in the proposed LK attention module, including local contextual information, long-range dependencies, and channel adaptation. The module also decomposes the LK convolution to optimize the computational cost and can be easily incorporated into CNNs such as U-Net. Comprehensive ablation experiments demonstrated the feasibility of convolutional decomposition and explored the most efficient and effective network design. Among them, the best Mid-type 3D LK attention-based U-Net network was evaluated on CT-ORG and BraTS 2020 datasets, achieving state-of-the-art segmentation performance when compared to avant-garde CNN and Transformer-based methods for medical image segmentation. The performance improvement due to the proposed 3D LK attention module was statistically validated.

Investigating White Matter Abnormalities Associated with Schizophrenia Using Deep Learning Model and Voxel-Based Morphometry

Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a devastating mental condition with significant negative consequences for patients, making correct and prompt diagnosis crucial. The purpose of this study is to use structural magnetic resonance image (MRI) to better classify individuals with SCZ from control normals (CN) and to locate a region of the brain that represents abnormalities associated with SCZ. Deep learning (DL), which is based on the nervous system, could be a very useful tool for doctors to accurately predict, diagnose, and treat SCZ. Gray Matter (GM), Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF), and White Matter (WM) brain regions are extracted from 99 MRI images obtained from the open-source OpenNeuro database to demonstrate SCZ's regional relationship. In this paper, we use a pretrained ResNet-50 deep network to extract features from MRI images and an ensemble deep random vector functional link (edRVFL) network to classify those features. By examining the results obtained, the edRVFL deep model provides the highest classification accuracy of 96.5% with WM and is identified as the best-performing algorithm compared to the traditional algorithms. Furthermore, we examined the GM, WM, and CSF tissue volumes in CN subjects and SCZ patients using voxel-based morphometry (VBM), and the results show 1363 significant voxels, 6.90 T-value, and 6.21 Z-value in the WM region of SCZ patients. In SCZ patients, WM is most closely linked to structural alterations, as evidenced by VBM analysis and the DL model.
