Efficient scheduling and attendance system for the ultrasound department under demand uncertainty during COVID-19

Scheduling and attendance management present huge challenges for hospitals, and the importance of both has become more critical as resource limitations and overwhelmingly uncertain demand are becoming more evident, especially during COVID-19. Important variables and factors need to be considered. When managers address this problem, they either use a manual approach or invest in expensive commercial tools. We propose a simple and flexible system that requires no extra investment. This system was developed using Ding Talk, Microsoft Excel and Visual C#. Ding Talk was used to collect vacation applications and clock information. A VBA-based Microsoft Excel program was developed to schedule shifts. A Windows Forms Application based on Visual C# was developed to complete the workload and attendance statistics. We focused on the design and implementation of the module of schedule generation and attendance management. Using the practical data of the Ultrasound Department, we compared the time spent on scheduling and attendance before and after the system was established. The results demonstrate that the system is feasible and efficient. Its high flexibility enables managers to quickly modify the schedule and attendance statistics to achieve dynamic management when dealing with inevitable demand changes during COVID-19.

Automated Design of Multipass Heuristics for Resource-Constrained Job Scheduling With Self-Competitive Genetic Programming

Resource constraint job scheduling is an important combinatorial optimization problem with many practical applications. This problem aims at determining a schedule for executing jobs on machines satisfying several constraints (e.g., precedence and resource constraints) given a shared central resource while minimizing the tardiness of the jobs. Due to the complexity of the problem, several exact, heuristic, and hybrid methods have been attempted. Despite their success, scalability is still a major issue of the existing methods. In this study, we develop a new genetic programming algorithm for resource constraint job scheduling to overcome or alleviate the scalability issue. The goal of the proposed algorithm is to evolve effective and efficient multipass heuristics by a surrogate-assisted learning mechanism and self-competitive genetic operations. The experiments show that the evolved multipass heuristics are very effective when tested with a large dataset. Moreover, the algorithm scales very well as excellent solutions are found for even the largest problem instances, outperforming existing metaheuristic and hybrid methods.

A Modified Genetic Algorithm With New Encoding and Decoding Methods for Integrated Process Planning and Scheduling Problem

Due to the complementarity of the process planning and shop scheduling, their integration can greatly facilitate the development of the intelligent manufacturing system. In the last decade, the integrated process planning and scheduling (IPPS) problem has become a research hotspot in the manufacturing system area. It is an NP-hard problem and is more complicated than the job shop scheduling problem. Although some progress has been obtained in the IPPS field, there are still many unsolved open problems. In this article, the novel integrated encoding and decoding methods are proposed by considering the OR-node of the process network graph. Moreover, a modified genetic algorithm (MGA) is designed based on the proposed coding methods. The process planning and the scheduling parts can be represented simultaneously in one individual. As for the precedence constraints between operations, the specifically designed operators are able to guarantee the feasibility of the operation sequence during the searching procedure. Then, the superiority of MGA is verified by updating nine new records on 37 well-known open problems, four of them reach their lower bounds. In addition, the proposed algorithm is also tested on a real-world case from a nonstandard equipment workshop in a Chinese machine tool company, which produces a common module of a packaging machine. The results show that the proposed MGA can solve the real-world case better than the comparative algorithms.

Detecting biomarkers from microarray data using distributed correlation based gene selection

BACKGROUND

Over the past few decades, DNA microarray technology has emerged as a prevailing process for early identification of cancer subtypes. Several feature selection (FS) techniques have been widely applied for identifying cancer from microarray gene data but only very few studies have been conducted on distributing the feature selection process for detecting cancer subtypes.

OBJECTIVE

Not all the gene expressions are needed in prediction, this research article objective is to select discriminative biomarkers by using distributed FS method which helps in accurately diagnosis of cancer subtype. Traditional feature selection techniques have several drawbacks like unrelated features that could perform well in terms of classification accuracy with a suitable subset of genes will be left out of the selection.

METHOD

To overcome the issue, in this paper a new filter-based method for gene selection is introduced which can select the highly relevant genes for distinguishing tissues from the gene expression dataset. In addition, it is used to compute the relation between gene-gene and gene-class and simultaneously identify subset of essential genes. Our method is tested on Diffuse Large B cell Lymphoma (DLBCL) dataset by using well-known classification techniques such as support vector machine, naïve Bayes, k-nearest neighbor, and decision tree.

RESULTS

Results on biological DLBCL dataset demonstrate that the proposed method provides promising tools for the prediction of cancer type, with the prediction accuracy of 97.62%, precision of 94.23%, sensitivity of 94.12%, F-measure of 90.12%, and ROC value of 99.75%.

CONCLUSION

The experimental results reveal the fact that the proposed method is significantly improved classification accuracy and execution time, compared to existing standard algorithms when applied to the non-partitioned dataset. Furthermore, the extracted genes are biologically sound and agree with the outcome of relevant biomedical studies.
