Abstract
Flammulina velutipes protein hydrolysates are known for their abundant amino acids and excellent developmental values. This study aimed to identify and screen neuroprotective peptides from F. velutipes protein hydrolysates in vitro and validate the protective effects of YVYAETY on memory impairment in scopolamine-induced mice. The F. velutipes protein was hydrolyzed by simulated gastrointestinal digestion, followed by purification through ultrafiltration and gel chromatography. The fraction exhibiting the strongest neuroprotective activity was analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The main identified peptides (SDLKPADF, WNDHYY, YVYAETY, and WFHPLF) effectively mitigated excessive ROS production by increasing SOD and GSH-px activities while inhibiting cell apoptosis and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) collapse against oxidative stress in Aβ25-35-induced HT22 cells. By molecular docking, the interaction between peptides and the active site of the Keap1-Kelch domain reveals their capacity to regulate the Keap1/Nrf2/HO-1 pathway. In vitro, the peptide YVYAETY had the best effect and can be further validated in vivo. The behavioral tests showed that YVYAETY improved scopolamine-induced cognitive impairment in mice. YVYAETY also alleviated neuron damage including neuron vacuolation and pyknotic nuclei in the hippocampus. Furthermore, it significantly inhibited oxidative stress and suppressed the activation of the Nrf2 pathway. Therefore, this study revealed that YVYAETY had the potential to serve as a novel neuroprotective agent.

Abstract
Iron accumulation in the brain causes oxidative stress, blood-brain barrier (BBB) breakdown, and neurodegeneration. We examined the preventive effects of acetylated oligopeptides (AOP) from whey protein on iron-induced hippocampal damage compared to N-acetyl cysteine (NAC). This 5-week study used 40 male albino rats. At the start, all rats received 150 mg/kg/day of oral NAC for a week. The 40 animals were then randomly divided into four groups: Group I (control) received a normal diet; Group II (iron overload) received 60 mg/kg/day intraperitoneal iron dextran 5 days a week for 4 weeks; Group III (NAC group) received 150 mg/kg/day NAC and iron dextran; and Group IV (AOP group) received 150 mg/kg/day AOP and iron dextran. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, spectrophotometry, and qRT-PCR were used to measure MMP-9, tissue inhibitor metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1), MDA, reduced glutathione (GSH) levels, and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) gene expression. Histopathological and immunohistochemical detection of nestin, claudin, caspase, and GFAP was also done. MMP-9, TIMP-1, MDA, caspase, and GFAP rose in the iron overload group, while GSH, Nrf2, HO-1, nestin, and claudin decreased. The NAC and AOP administrations improved iron overload-induced biochemical and histological alterations. We found that AOP and NAC can protect the brain hippocampus from iron overload, improve BBB disruption, and provide neuroprotection with mostly no significant difference from healthy controls.

Abstract
Prolyl oligopeptidase (POP) is a conserved serine protease belonging to proline-specific peptidases. It has both enzymatic and non-enzymatic activity and is involved in numerous biological processes in the human body, playing a role in e.g., cellular growth and differentiation, inflammation, as well as the development of some neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders. This article describes the physiological and pathological aspects of POP activity and the state-of-art of its peptidic inhibitors originating from food proteins, with a particular focus on their potential as cognition-enhancing agents. Although some milk, meat, fish, and plant protein-derived peptides have the potential to be applied as natural, procognitive nutraceuticals, their effectiveness requires further evaluation, especially in clinical trials. We demonstrated that the important features of the most promising POP-inhibiting peptides are very short sequence, high content of hydrophobic amino acids, and usually the presence of proline residue.

Abstract
Due to the high addiction and side effects of medicines, people have increasingly inclined to natural and healthy peptides to improve sleep. Herein, we isolated novel peptides with sleep-promoting ability from Pneumatophorus japonicus bone peptides (PBPs) and constructed an insomniac zebrafish model as a demonstration, incorporating behavioral and transcriptomic approaches to reveal the sleep-promoting effect and mechanism of PBPs. Specifically, a sequential targeting isolation approach was developed to refine and identify a peptide with remarkable sleep-promoting activity, namely TG7 (Tyr-Gly-Asn-Pro-Trp-Glu-Lys). TG7 shows comparable effects and a similar action pathway to melatonin in improving sleep. TG7 restores abnormal behavior of insomnia zebrafish to normal levels by upregulating the hnrnpa3 gene. The peptide downregulates per1b gene but upregulates cry1b, cry1ba and per2, improving the circadian rhythm. Furthermore, TG7 upregulates the genes gnb3b, arr3b and opn1mw1 to regulate the visual function. The above results indicate that TG7 improves circadian rhythms and attenuated abnormal alterations in visual function and motility induced by light, allowing for effective sleep promotion. This study isolated sleep-promoting peptides from PBPs, which provides a theoretical basis for the development of subsequent sleep-promoting products based on protein peptides.

Abstract
Peptides have revealed a large range of biological activities with high selectivity and efficiency for the development of new drugs, including neuroprotective agents. Therefore, this work investigates the neuroprotective properties of naturally occurring peptides, endomorphin-1 (EM-1), endomorphin-2 (EM-2), rubiscolin-5 (R-5), and rubiscolin-6 (R-6). We aimed at answering the question of whether well-known opioid peptides can counteract cell injury in a common in vitro model of Parkinson’s disease (PD). Antioxidant activity of these four peptides was evaluated by the 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) scavenging activity, oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC), and ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays, while neuroprotective effects were assessed in a neurotoxic model induced by 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) in a human neuroblastoma cell line (SH-SY5Y). The mechanisms associated with neuroprotection were investigated by the determination of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and Caspase-3 activity. Among the tested peptides, endomorphins significantly prevented neuronal death induced by 6-OHDA treatment, decreasing MMP (EM-1) or Caspase-3 activity (EM-2). Meanwhile, R-6 showed antioxidant potential by FRAP assay and exhibited the highest capacity to recover the neurotoxicity induced by 6-OHDA via attenuation of ROS levels and mitochondrial dysfunction. Generally, we hypothesize that peptides’ ability to suppress the toxic effect induced by 6-OHDA may be mediated by different cellular mechanisms. The protective effect caused by endomorphins results in an antiapoptotic effect (mitochondrial protection and decrease in Caspase-3 activity), while R-6 potency to increase a cell’s viability seems to be mediated by reducing oxidative stress. Our results may provide new insight into neurodegeneration and support the short peptides as a potent drug candidate to treat PD. However, further studies should be conducted on the detailed mechanisms of how tested peptides could suppress neuronal injuries.

Abstract
Bioactive peptides from food have been widely studied due to their potential applications as functional foods and pharmaceuticals. Sea cucumber, a traditional tonic food, is characterized by high protein and low fat, thereby substrates are being studied to release sea cucumber peptides (SCPs). Although recent studies have shown that SCPs have various bioactive functions, there is no literature reviewing the development status of SCPs. In this review, we summarized the production of SCPs, including their purification and identification, then mainly focused on the comprehensive potential health benefits of SCP in vivo and in vitro, and finally discussed the challenge facing the development of SCPs. We found that SCPs have well-documented health benefits due to their antioxidation, anti-diabetes, ACE inhibitory, immunomodulatory, anti-cancer, anti-fatigue, anti-aging, neuroprotection, micromineral-chelating, etc. However, the structure-activity relationships of SCPs and the functional molecular mechanisms underlying their regulation in vivo need further investigation. Research on the safety of SCP and its potential regulation mechanism will contribute to transferring these findings into commercial applications. Hopefully, this review could promote the development and application of SCPs in further investigation and commercialization.

Abstract
In preceding years, bioactive peptides (BAPs) have piqued escalating attention owing to their multitudinous biological features. To date, many potential BAPs exhibiting anti-cancer activities have been documented; yet, obstacles such as their safety profiles and consumer acceptance continue to exist. Moreover, BAPs have been discovered to facilitate the suppression of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (CoVID-19) and maybe ideal for treating the CoVID-19 infection, as stated by published experimental findings, but their widespread knowledge is scarce. Likewise, there is a cornucopia of BAPs possessing neuroprotective effects that mend neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) by regulating gut microbiota, but they remain a subject of research interest. Additionally, a plethora of researchers have attempted next-generation approaches based on BAPs, but they need scientific attention. The text format of this critical review is organized around an overview of BAPs' versatility and diverse bio functionalities with emphasis on recent developments and novelties. The review is alienated into independent sections, which are related to either BAPs based disease management strategies or next-generation BAPs based approaches. BAPs based anti-cancer, anti-CoVID-19, and neuroprotective strategies have been explored, which may offer insights that could help the researchers and industries to find an alternate regimen against the three aforementioned fatal diseases. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first review that has systematically discussed the next-generation approaches in BAP research. Furthermore, it can be concluded that the BAPs may be optimal for the management of cancer, CoVID-19, and NDs; nevertheless, experimental and preclinical studies are crucial to validate their therapeutic benefits.

Abstract
Tryptophyllins constitute a heterogeneous group of peptides that are one of the first classes of peptides identified from amphibian’s skin secretions. Here, we report the structural characterization and antioxidant properties of a novel tryptophyllin‐like peptide, named PpT‐2, isolated from the Iberian green frog Pelophylax perezi. The skin secretion of P. perezi was obtained by electrical stimulation and fractionated using RP‐HPLC. De novo peptide sequencing was conducted using MALDI MS/MS. The primary structure of PpT‐2 (FPWLLS‐NH2) was confirmed by Edman degradation and subsequently investigated using in silico tools. PpT‐2 shared physicochemical properties with other well‐known antioxidants. To test PpT‐2 for antioxidant activity in vitro, the peptide was synthesized by solid phase and assessed in the chemical‐based ABTS and DPPH scavenging assays. Then, a flow cytometry experiment was conducted to assess PpT‐2 antioxidant activity in oxidatively challenged murine microglial cells. As predicted by the in silico analyses, PpT‐2 scavenged free radicals in vitro and suppressed the generation of reactive species in PMA‐stimulated BV‐2 microglia cells. We further explored possible bioactivities of PpT‐2 against prostate cancer cells and bacteria, against which the peptide exerted a moderate antiproliferative effect and negligible antimicrobial activity. The biocompatibility of PpT‐2 was evaluated in cytotoxicity assays and in vivo toxicity with Galleria mellonella. No toxicity was detected in cells treated with up to 512 µg/ml and in G. mellonella treated with up to 40 mg/kg PpT‐2. This novel peptide, PpT‐2, stands as a promising peptide with potential therapeutic and biotechnological applications, mainly for the treatment/prevention of neurodegenerative disorders.

Abstract
The destruction of the homeostasis in the gut-brain axis can lead to cognitive impairment and memory decline. Dietary intervention with bioactive peptides from aquatic products is an innovative strategy to prevent cognitive deficits. The present study aimed to determine the neuroprotective effect of tilapia head protein hydrolysate (THPH) on scopolamine-induced cognitive impairment in mice, and to further explore its mechanism through the microbiota–gut-brain axis. The results showed that THPH administration significantly improved the cognitive behavior of mice, and normalized the cholinergic system and oxidative stress system of the mice brain. The histopathological observation showed that THPH administration significantly reduced the pathological damage of hippocampal neurons, increased the number of mature neurons marked by NeuN and delayed the activation of astrocytes in the hippocampus of mice. In addition, THPH administration maintained the stability of cholinergic system, alleviated oxidative stress and further improved the cognitive impairment by reshaping the gut microbiota structure of scopolamine-induced mice and alleviating the disorder of lipid metabolism and amino acid metabolism in serum. In conclusion, our research shows that THPH supplementation is a nutritional strategy to alleviate cognitive impairment through the gut-brain axis.

Abstract
Brain aging is characterized by a chronic low-grade inflammation, which significantly impairs cognitive function. Microglial cells, the immunocompetent cells of the brain, present a different phenotype, switching from a homeostatic signature (M0) to a more reactive phenotype called “MGnD” (microglial neurodegenerative phenotype), leading to a high production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Furthermore, microglial cells can be activated by age-induced gut dysbiosis through the vagus nerve or the modulation of the peripheral immune system. Nutrients, in particular n-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs) and low molecular weight peptides, display powerful immunomodulatory properties, and can thus prevent age-related cognitive decline. The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of n-3 LC-PUFAs and low molecular weight peptides contained in a marine by-product-derived hydrolysate on microglial phenotypes and intestinal permeability and their consequences on cognition in mice. We demonstrated that the hydrolysate supplementation for 8 weeks prevented short- and long-term memory decline during aging. These observations were linked to the modulation of microglial signature. Indeed, the hydrolysate supplementation promoted homeostatic microglial phenotype by increasing TGF-β1 expression and stimulated phagocytosis by increasing Clec7a expression. Moreover, the hydrolysate supplementation promoted anti-inflammatory intestinal pathway and tended to prevent intestinal permeability alteration occurring during aging. Therefore, the fish hydrolysate appears as an interesting candidate to prevent cognitive decline during aging.

Abstract
Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a devastating neurodegenerative disease that affects millions of older people worldwide and is characterized by a progressive deterioration of cognitive functions, including learning and memory. There are currently very few approved treatments (i.e., acetylcholinesterase inhibitors such as donepezil), all of which are limited to the symptomatic control of AD and are associated with side effects that may result in discontinuation of treatment. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop disease-modifying treatments to prevent AD-induced cognitive deficits. Subcommissural organ (SCO)-spondin is a brain-specific glycoprotein produced during embryogenesis and has a substantial impact on neuronal development. In the current study, we sought to evaluate the protective effects of the linear (NX210) and cyclized (NX210c) forms of a SCO-spondin-derived peptide on learning and memory in a mouse model of AD. Mice received an intracerebroventricular injection of Aβ25–35 oligomers and were subsequently treated with intraperitoneal injections of vehicle, NX210 or NX210c of different doses (ranging from 0.1 to 30 mg/kg) and therapy paradigms (early or late stand-alone treatments, combination with donepezil or second-line treatment). Cognitive function was evaluated using Y-Maze, step-through latency passive avoidance (STPA) and Morris water maze (MWM) tests for up to 4 months. Early stage daily treatment with NX210 and NX210c decreased the levels of common pathological markers and features of AD, including Aβ1–42, phosphorylated-tau, inflammation, astrogliosis and lipid peroxidation. Meanwhile, use of these drugs increased the levels of synaptophysin and postsynaptic density protein 95. Regardless of the experimental paradigm used, NX210 and NX210c prevented Aβ25–35-induced decrease in spontaneous alternations (Y-Maze) and step-through latency into the dark compartment (STPA), and Aβ25–35-induced increase in time needed to locate the immersed platform during the learning phase and decrease in time spent in the target quadrant during the retention phase (MWM). Interestingly, this study provides the novel evidence that the native and oxidized cyclic forms of the SCO-spondin-derived peptide reduce pathological factors associated with AD and restore learning and memory at both early and late disease stages. Overall, this study sheds light on the therapeutic potential of this innovative disease-modifying peptide to restore memory function in patients with AD.

Abstract
Neurodegenerative diseases are a broad group of largely debilitating, and ultimately terminal conditions resulting in progressive degeneration of different brain regions. The observed damages are associated with cell death, structural and functional deficits of neurons, or demyelination. The concept of neuroprotection concerns the administration of the agent, which should reverse some of the damage or prevent further adverse changes. A growing body of evidence suggested that among many classes of compounds considered as neuroprotective agents, peptides derived from natural materials or their synthetic analogs are good candidates. They presented a broad spectrum of activities and abilities to act through diverse mechanisms of action. Biologically active peptides have many properties, including antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiinflammatory, and immunomodulatory effects. Peptides with pro-survival and neuroprotective activities, associated with inhibition of oxidative stress, apoptosis, inflammation and are able to improve cell viability or mitochondrial functions, are also promising molecules of particular interest to the pharmaceutical industries. Peptide multiple activities open the way for broad application potential as therapeutic agents or ingredients of health-promoting functional foods. Significantly, synthetic peptides can be remodeled in numerous ways to have desired features, such as increased solubility or biological stability, as well as selectivity towards a specific receptor, and finally better membrane penetration. This review summarized the most common features of major neurodegenerative disorders, their causes, consequences, and reported new neuroprotective drug development approaches. The author focused on the unique perspectives in neuroprotection and provided a concise survey of short peptides proposed as novel therapeutic agents against various neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract
Kunitz-type peptides from venomous animals have been known to inhibit different proteinases and also to modulate ion channels and receptors, demonstrating analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-histamine and many other biological activities. At present, there is evidence of their neuroprotective effects. We have studied eight Kunitz-type peptides of the sea anemone Heteractis crispa to find molecules with cytoprotective activity in the 6-OHDA-induced neurotoxicity model on neuroblastoma Neuro-2a cells. It has been shown that only five peptides significantly increase the viability of neuronal cells treated with 6-OHDA. The TRPV1 channel blocker, HCRG21, has revealed the neuroprotective effect that could be indirect evidence of TRPV1 involvement in the disorders associated with neurodegeneration. The pre-incubation of Neuro-2a cells with HCRG21 followed by 6-OHDA treatment has resulted in a prominent reduction in ROS production compared the untreated cells. It is possible that the observed effect is due to the ability of the peptide act as an efficient free-radical scavenger. One more leader peptide, InhVJ, has shown a neuroprotective activity and has been studied at concentrations of 0.01–10.0 µM. The target of InhVJ is still unknown, but it was the best of all eight homologous peptides in an absolute cell viability increment on 38% of the control in the 6-OHDA-induced neurotoxicity model. The targets of the other three active peptides remain unknown.

Abstract
This study was conducted to determine changes in the stability and antioxidant activity of extracts of bioactive peptides with different molecular weights (<3 and <10 kDa) obtained from beef myofibrillar protein using commercial enzymes (alkaline-AK and papain) during in vitro human digestion by gut microbiota. After the digestion in the large intestine, the stability of the bioactive peptide extracts decreased regardless of their molecular weight. However, the peptides obtained following alkaline-AK treatment were less stable than those obtained following papain digestion. The radical scavenging activities of the peptide extracts also decreased during in vitro human digestion, regardless of the molecular weights of the peptides and the commercial enzymes used. These results indicate that the stability and antioxidative activity of the bioactive peptides were affected by the digestion process by the gut microbiota. This study provides data supporting the changes in the stability and bioavailability of functional materials within the human body.

Abstract
Neuroinflammation constitutes a normal part of the brain immune response orchestrated by microglial cells. However, a sustained and uncontrolled production of proinflammatory factors together with microglial activation contribute to the onset of a chronic low-grade inflammation, leading to neuronal damage and cognitive as well as behavioral impairments. Hence, limiting brain inflammatory response and improving the resolution of inflammation could be particularly of interest to prevent these alterations. Dietary n-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs) and low molecular weight peptides are good candidates because of their immunomodulatory and proresolutive properties. These compounds are present in a fish hydrolysate derived from marine-derived byproducts. In this study, we compared the effect of an 18-day supplementation with this fish hydrolysate to a supplementation with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation in mice. In response to peripherally injected LPS, the fish hydrolysate supplementation decreased the hippocampal mRNA expression of the proinflammatory cytokines IL-6 (p < 0.001), IL-1β (p = 0.0008) and TNF-α (p < 0.0001), whereas the DHA supplementation reduced only the expression of IL-6 (p = 0.004). This decline in proinflammatory cytokine expressions was associated with an increase in the protein expression of IκB (p = 0.014 and p = 0.0054 as compared to the DHA supplementation and control groups, respectively) and to a modulation of microglial activation markers in the hippocampus. The beneficial effects of the fish hydrolysate could be due in part to the switch of the hippocampal oxylipin profile towards a more anti-inflammatory profile as compared to the DHA supplementation. Thus, the valorization of fish byproducts seems very attractive to prevent and counteract neuroinflammation.

Abstract
Leuconostoc mesenteroides H40 (H40) was isolated from kimchi,
and its probiotic properties and neuroprotective effect was evaluated in
oxidatively stressed SH-SY5Y cells. H40 was stable in artificial gastric
conditions and can be attached in HT-29 cells. In addition, H40 did not produce
β-glucuronidase and showed resistant to several antibiotics. The
conditioned medium (CM) was made using HT-29 cells refined with heat-killed
probiotics (Probiotics-CM) and heated yogurts (Y-CM) to investigate the
neuroprotective effect. Treatment with H40-CM not only increased cell viability
but also significantly improved brain derived neurotropic factor
(BDNF) expression and reduced the
Bax/Bcl-2 ratio in oxidatively stress-induced SH-SY5Y
cells. Besides, probiotic Y-CM significantly increased BDNF
mRNA expression and decreased Bax/Bcl-2 ratio. The
physicochemical properties of probiotic yogurt with H40 was not significantly
different from the control yogurt. The viable cell counts of lactic acid
bacteria in control and probiotic yogurt with H40 was 8.66 Log CFU/mL and 8.96
Log CFU/mL, respectively. Therefore, these results indicate that H40 can be used
as prophylactic functional dairy food having neuroprotective effects.

Abstract
Conjugation between peptides and polyphenols, especially epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) using covalent grafting, is a promising method that can modify peptides or augment their antioxidant activities. Moreover, the resulting conjugates can be intensively served as functional ingredient or supplement. Thus, the objectives of the present study were to investigate the grafting between hydrolyzed collagen (HC) from defatted seabass skin and EGCG and to study characteristics as well as bioactivities of the obtained HC-EGCG conjugate. Levels of EGCG used (1-5%, w/w) affected surface hydrophobicity (SH) and antioxidant activities of the conjugates. Overall, the addition of EGCG at 3% to HC (HC-3% EGCG) increased SH, ABTS radical scavenging and metal chelating activities (p < 0.05). FTIR spectra of HC-3% EGCG revealed the interaction between HC and EGCG via H-bonding and covalent interaction. Sephadex G-25 fraction of conjugate with molecular weight (MW) of 2771 Da rendered the highest redox ability. When HC-3% EGCG was applied in fibroblast (MRC-5) and keratinocyte (HaCaT) cells, all levels tested (125-1000 μg mL-1) had no toxicity on both cells. Higher proliferation of both cells were attained with increasing levels of HC-3% EGCG, particularly at 500 and 1000 μg mL-1 (p < 0.05). Moreover, both levels used had cytoprotective ability against reactive oxygen species (ROS) as evidenced by lowered ROS and cell death detected as compared to those found in cells induced with H2O2 or AAPH alone (p < 0.05) for both cells. HC-3% EGCG could serve as an effective antioxidant for application in foods or as supplement for skin nourishment.

Abstract
The prevalence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) has become a substantial global concern. Approved AChE inhibitors have been used for symptomatic treatment of AD. Binding of amyloid β (Aβ) to the peripheral anionic site of AChE facilitates the formation of Aβ plaques. Blocking this proposed protein-protein interaction by inhibition of the peripheral anionic site of AChE, in addition to increasing the level of ACh, reduces the Aβ aggregation and might qualify to slow down the progression of disease besides the palliative treatment. Targeting protein-protein interactions consider as one of the most challenging issues in the realm of drug design in which peptides have potentials to excel in. In the present study, we applied two virtual fragment-based and template-based approaches to design peptidic inhibitors of the PAS of AChE. Based on the in silico studies, high scored peptides p2 (WTWYGYWVW) and p10 (NHRMLTRRY) obtained from fragment-based and template-based design respectively. Regarding in vitro results, p2 (IC50 = 16 ± 3.2 μM) and p10 (IC50 = 23.6 ± 4.9 μM) showed significant AChE inhibitory effects. The molecular mechanism of inhibition studied by Lineweaver-Burk plots was mixed inhibition for both peptides. The in vitro results conformed to the in silico results and showed that both peptides occupied the CAS and PAS of AChE. The comparison of two peptide-design approaches revealed that the fragment-based design had more chemical diversity and showed priority to the template-based design. According to the obtained results, peptidic inhibitors of AChE designed by the proposed fragment-based approach might be more efficient in comparison to traditional approaches.

Abstract
Neurodegenerative diseases (ND) affect around a billion people worldwide. Oxidative stress plays a critical role in the activation of neuronal death mechanisms, implicated in the ND etiology. In the present research, the neuroprotective effect of the S. hispanica protein derivatives is evaluated, on neuronal cells N1E-115, after the damage induction with H2O2. From the protein-rich fraction of S. hispanica, three peptide fractions were obtained (3-5, 1-3 y < 1 kDa) and its neuroprotective effect on neuronal cells N1E-115 was evaluated, through the antioxidant pathway. In the toxicity assay, the peptide fractions showed viability greater than 90%. When N1E-115 cells were incubated with 100 µM H2O2, fractions 1-3 and < 1 kDa, presented cell viability of 66.64% ± 3.2 and 67.32% ± 2.8, respectively. Fractions 1-3 and < 1 kDa reduced by 41.73% ± 3.2 and 40.87% ± 2.8, respectively, the ROS production compared to the control, without significant statistical difference between both fractions (p < 0.05), while F3-5 kDa, only reduced the ROS production by 21.95% ± 2.4. The protective effect observed in the < 3 kDa fractions could be associated with its antioxidant activity, which represents an important study target.

Abstract
Neuroinflammation plays a critical role in the neurodegenerative disease's development, where microglia's act an important role in the mechanisms of response to neuronal damage. In the present research, the neuroprotective effect from Salvia hispanica peptide fractions on the proinflammatory modulation on HMC3 microglial cells was evaluated. From the enzymatic hydrolysis of a protein-rich fraction from S. hispanica seeds, three peptide fractions (<1, 1-3 and 3-5 kDa) were obtained, from which its neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effect was determined on the production of proinflammatory mediators on HMC3 cells. The F1-3 kDa exhibited the greatest protective effect (79.04%), associated with the decrease in ROS cell production (51.3 ± 2.3%). Likewise, F1-3 kDa at 50 µg/ml, presented the highest reduction percentages of NO (33.1 ± 2.30%), TNFα (26.4 ± 1.1%) and IL6 (17.36 ± 1.6%). F1-3 kDa exhibited a neuroprotective effect in HMC3 cells associated with its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Currently, neurodegenerative diseases represent a global health problem, so the search for bioactive compounds with neuroprotective effect is useful in the prevention and treatment of this group of diseases. Peptide research with an effect on the proinflammatory and prooxidant mediator's reduction presents a potential application in the functional food's development aimed at the treatment of chronic diseases, that have oxidative stress and inflammation as their etiological factor. The present research adds to the scientific evidence of the potential benefits of bioactive peptides obtained from chia seeds. The results correlate with the main health benefits of whole chia seed in humans, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, hypoglycemic and hypotensive capacity. This relationship is associated with the protein and peptide composition of chia, which increases its added value as food.
