Abstract
Food bioactives possess specific physiological benefits of preventing certain diet-related chronic diseases or maintain human health. However, the limitations of the bioactives are their poor stability, lower water solubility and unacceptable bioaccessibility. Structure damage or degradation is often found for the bioactives under certain environmental conditions like high temperature, strong light, extreme pH or high oxygen concentration during food processing, packaging, storage and absorption. Nanostructured steady-state nanocarriers have shown great potential in overcoming the drawbacks for food bioactives. Various delivery systems including solid form delivery system, liquid form delivery system and encapsulation technology have been developed. The embedded food nutrients can largely decrease the loss and degradation during food processing, packaging and storage. The design and application of stimulus and targeted delivery systems can improve the stability, bioavailability and efficacy of the food bioactives upon oral consumption due to enzymatic degradation in the gastrointestinal tract. The food nutrients encapsulated in the smart delivery system can be well protected against degradation during oral administration, thus improving the bioavailability and releazing controlled or targeted release for food nutrients. The encapsulated food bioactives show great potential in nutrition therapy for sub-health status and disease. Much effort is required to design and prepare more biocompatible nanostructured steady-state nanocarriers using food-grade protein or polysaccharides as wall materials, which can be used in food industry and maintain the human health.

Abstract
The current growing attractiveness of natural dyes around the world is a consequence of the increasing rejection of synthetic dyes whose use is increasingly criticized. The great interest in natural pigments from herbal origin such as cyanidin 3-O-glucoside (C3G) is due to their biological properties and their health benefits. However, the chemical instability of C3G during processing and storage and its low bioavailability limits its food application. Nanoencapsulation technology using appropriate nanocarriers is revolutionizing the use of anthocyanin, including C3G. Owing to the chemical stability and functional benefits that this new nanotechnology provides to the latter, its industrial application is now extending to the pharmaceutical and cosmetic fields. This review focuses on the various nanoencapsulation techniques used and the chemical and biological benefits induced to C3G.

Abstract
Recent advances in nanomedicine toward cancer treatment have considered exploiting liposomes and extracellular vesicles as effective cargos to deliver therapeutic agents to tumor cells. Meanwhile, solid-state nanoparticles are continuing to attract interest for their great medical potential thanks to their countless properties and possible applications. However, possible drawbacks arising from the use of nanoparticles in nanomedicine, such as the nonspecific uptake of these materials in healthy organs, their aggregation in biological environments and their possible immunogenicity, must be taken into account. Considering these limitations and the intrinsic capability of phospholipidic bilayers to act as a biocompatible shield, their exploitation for effectively encasing solid-state nanoparticles seems a promising strategy to broaden the frontiers of cancer nanomedicine, also providing the possibility to engineer the lipid bilayers to further enhance the therapeutic potential of such nanotools. This work aims to give a comprehensive overview of the latest developments in the use of artificial liposomes and naturally derived extracellular vesicles for the coating of solid-state nanoparticles for cancer treatment, starting from in vitro works until the up-to-date advances and current limitations of these nanopharmaceutics in clinical applications, passing through in vivo and 3D cultures studies.

Abstract
Anthocyanins have attracted great attention because of their potential therapeutic benefit. However, the effective technique for simultaneous separation and preparation multiple anthocyanin monomers with high purity and high yield is still deficient. In this study, the chromatographic conditions of HPLC were optimized to investigate six well-known major anthocyanins (delphinidin-3-O-glucoside, cyanidin-3-O-glucoside, petunidin-3-O-glucoside, pelargonidin-3-O-glucoside, peonidin-3-O-glucoside and malvidin-3-O-glucoside) in blueberry. The separation conditions were optimized in analytical HPLC and further applied in semi-preparative HPLC to prepare anthocyanin monomers. The results showed that six well-known major anthocyanins were well separated under the condition of using acetonitrile-water (contained 0.3% phosphoric acid) as a mobile phase with gradient elution at a detection wavelength of 520 nm. The method showed good linear correlations between the concentrations and peak areas of the six components with correlation coefficients greater than 0.9994, and the detection limits of the six anthocyanins were 0.010-0.035 μg/mL, and the quantification limits were 0.033-0.117 μg/mL, which was suitable for the determination of anthocyanins in products. In the same experimental conditions, six well-known major anthocyanins were simultaneously prepared by semi-preparative HPLC with high purity to 99% and high yield to 22.5%. This study provides a practical and valuable method for simultaneous determination and preparation of six well-known major anthocyanins.

Abstract
Loss of idiopathic retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) leads to irreversible vision defects and is considered the primary characteristic of glaucoma. However, effective treatment strategies in terms of RGC neuroprotection remain elusive. In the present study, the protective effects of resveratrol on RGC apoptosis, and the mechanisms underlying its effects were investigated, with a particular emphasis on the function of optic atrophy 1 (Opa1). In an ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury model, the notable thinning of the retina, significant apoptosis of RGCs, reduction in Opa1 expression and long Opa1 isoform to short Opa1 isoform ratios (L-Opa1/S-Opa1 ratio) were observed, all of which were reversed by resveratrol administration. Serum deprivation resulted in reductions in R28 cell viability, superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, Opa1 expression and induced apoptosis, which were also partially reversed by resveratrol treatment. To conclude, results from the present study suggest that resveratrol treatment significantly reduced retinal damage and RGC apoptosis in I/R injury and serum deprivation models. In addition, resveratrol reversed the downregulated expression of Opa1 and reduced SOD activity. Mechanistically, resveratrol influenced mitochondrial dynamics by regulating the L-Opa1/S-Opa1 ratio. Therefore, these observations suggest that resveratrol may exhibit potential as a therapeutic agent for RGC damage in the future.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Boron (B) is an abundant element on earth and presents at physiological pH in the form of boric acid (BA). It has both positive and negative effects on biological systems. BA and sodium borates have been considered as being toxic to the reproduction system in animal experiments. Unfortunately, the molecular mechanism underlying the toxic effects of BA is not fully understood. METHODS Here, we demonstrate the influence of BA on mouse TM3 Leydig cells which are male reproductive system cells targeted by BA exposure. The cytotoxicity was evaluated by MTT and NRU assays. Annexin V-FITC/PI double staining kit, mitochondria membrane potential (ΔΨm) assay kit with JC-1 and caspase-3 colorimetric assay kit were used to indicate the cell death pathway. To estimate the role of oxidative stress in BA induced toxicity, glutathione (GSH) level, catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities were measured manually. RESULTS The cell viability assays showed that BA was not cytotoxic within the tested concentrations up to 1000 μM. Sub-toxic concentrations were used for detecting oxidative stress status. BA exposure was significantly reduced GSH level at 1000 μM and CAT activity in a concentration-dependent manner. However, SOD activity was increased at the tested concentrations (100-1000 μM). Moreover, ΔΨm was significantly decreased at 500 and 1000 μM of BA, while caspase-3 activity was not changed apparently. CONCLUSION These findings demonstrated that BA is not cytotoxic and apoptotic but may slightly induces oxidative stress in TM3 Leydig cells at higher concentrations.
