Review of Allelopathy in Green Tides: The Case of Ulva prolifera in the South Yellow Sea

The proliferation of large green macroalgae in marine environments has led to the occurrence of green tides, particularly in the South Yellow Sea region of China, where Ulva prolifera has been identified as the primary species responsible for the world's largest green tide events. Allelopathy among plants is a critical factor influencing the dynamics of green tides. This review synthesizes previous research on allelopathic interactions within green tides, categorizing four extensively studied allelochemicals: fatty acids, aldehydes, phenols, and terpenes. The mechanisms by which these compounds regulate the physiological processes of green tide algae are examined in depth. Additionally, recent advancements in the rapid detection of allelochemicals are summarized, and their potential applications in monitoring green tide events are discussed. The integration of advanced monitoring technologies, such as satellite observation and environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis, with allelopathic substance detection is also explored. This combined approach addresses gaps in understanding the dynamic processes of green tide formation and provides a more comprehensive insight into the mechanisms driving these phenomena. The findings and new perspectives presented in this review aim to offer valuable insights and inspiration for researchers and policymakers.

The mitigating effects of diatom-bacteria biofilm on coastal harmful algal blooms: A lab-based study concerning species-specific competition and biofilm formation

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) in coastal areas severely affected the health of ecosystem and human beings. The HABs control by biological methods, especially for biofilms, has been research hotspots in freshwater ecosystem. However, the biofilm-relating control of HABs in marine environment was very limited. In the present study, we found the population growth of two harmful algal species, Prorocentrum obtusidens Schiller (formerly P. donghaiense Lu) and Heterosigma akashiwo, were inhibited by a diatom-bacteria biofilm. The highest inhibitory rate was 79.6 ± 2.1% for P. obtusidens when co-cultured with biofilm suspension, and was 88.6 ± 5.8% for H. akashiwo when co-cultured with the biofilm filtrate without nutrient replenishment. When nitrate and phosphate were added, the inhibition rate for P. obtusidens was 72.3 ± 2.0%, but the population inhibition was not found in H. akashiwo. It suggested that P. obtusidens was mainly inhibited via interference competition, while the inhibition of H. akashiwo was resulted from exploitation competition. We further investigated the role of fatty acids for the interference competition in P. obtusidens, and found that fatty acids at their environmental-relevance concentrations can inhibit the photosynthetic capacity of P. obtusidens, but cannot inhibit the population growth. The community of biofilm shifted, and was finally dominated by the photoheterotrophic bacterium Dinoroseobacter shibae, and the diatom Fistulifera sp. with relative abundance of higher than 90%. Our study indicated that the diatom-bacteria biofilm was likely the candidate for the HABs control in marine environment. D. shibae and Fistulifera sp. were probably the effective species in the biofilm.

Deciphering interactions between the marine dinoflagellate Prorocentrum lima and the fungus Aspergillus pseudoglaucus

The comprehension of microbial interactions is one of the key challenges in marine microbial ecology. This study focused on exploring chemical interactions between the toxic dinoflagellate Prorocentrum lima and a filamentous fungal species, Aspergillus pseudoglaucus, which has been isolated from the microalgal culture. Such interspecies interactions are expected to occur even though they were rarely studied. Here, a co-culture system was designed in a dedicated microscale marine-like condition. This system allowed to explore microalgal-fungal physical and metabolic interactions in presence and absence of the bacterial consortium. Microscopic observation showed an unusual physical contact between the fungal mycelium and dinoflagellate cells. To delineate specialized metabolome alterations during microalgal-fungal co-culture metabolomes were monitored by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry. In-depth multivariate statistical analysis using dedicated approaches highlighted (1) the metabolic alterations associated with microalgal-fungal co-culture, and (2) the impact of associated bacteria in microalgal metabolome response to fungal interaction. Unfortunately, only a very low number of highlighted features were fully characterized. However, an up-regulation of the dinoflagellate toxins okadaic acid and dinophysistoxin 1 was observed during co-culture in supernatants. Such results highlight the importance to consider microalgal-fungal interactions in the study of parameters regulating toxin production.

A New Perspective: Revealing the Algicidal Properties of Bacillus subtilis to Alexandrium pacificum from Bacterial Communities and Toxins

Algicidal bacteria are important in the control of toxic dinoflagellate blooms, but studies on the environmental behavior of related algal toxins are still lacking. In this study, Bacillus subtilis S3 (S3) showed the highest algicidal activity against Alexandrium pacificum (Group IV) out of six Bacillus strains. When treated with 0.5% (v/v) S3 bacterial culture and sterile supernatant, the algicidal rates were 69.74% and 70.22% at 12 h, respectively, and algicidal substances secreted by S3 were considered the mechanism of algicidal effect. During the algicidal process, the rapid proliferation of Alteromonas sp. in the phycosphere of A. pacificum may have accelerated the algal death. Moreover, the algicidal development of S3 released large amounts of intracellular paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) into the water, as the extracellular PSTs increased by 187.88% and 231.47% at 12 h, compared with the treatment of bacterial culture and sterile supernatant at 0 h, respectively. Although the total amount of PSTs increased slightly, the total toxicity of the algal sample decreased as GTX1/4 was transformed by S3 into GTX2/3 and GTX5. These results more comprehensively reveal the complex relationship between algicidal bacteria and microalgae, providing a potential source of biological control for harmful algal blooms and toxins.

Allelopathic interactions between phytobenthos and meiofaunal community in an Adriatic benthic ecosystem: Understanding the role of aldehydes and macroalgal structural complexity

Macroalgae produce several allelopathic substances, including polyunsaturated aldehydes (PUAs), which may inhibit photosynthesis and growth rates of other algal species, and grazing. Additionally, macroalgal structural complexity is an important factor in determining abundance patterns and size structure of epiphytic organisms. In this study the PUAs production of two Mediterranean macroalgae, Dictyopteris polypodioides, (DP, Phaeophyceae, Dictyotales) and Cystoseira compressa (CC, Phaeophyceae, Fucales), was characterized to clarify the relationships between the meiobenthic and microphytobenthic communities. Results showed a higher PUAs production and a diverse qualitative profile for DP, which reported long-chain compounds (i.e. C14-C16) as main aldehydes, than CC, with the short-chain C6:2 as the main compound, as well as variability among sampling times. A clear separation of the meiofauna and microphytobenthos assemblages was found for the macroalgae, but with different temporal trends. Dissimilarities were due to five microalgal orders, namely Naviculales, Lyrellales, Gonyaulacales (i.e. Ostreopsis), Bacillariales, and Licmophorales, and to the meiofaunal groups nematodes, copepods, and copepod nauplii, which were more abundant on DP than on CC. Results indicate that macroalgal complexity is a major determinant of the meiofaunal community structure (accounting for 26% of the variation), rather than PUAs production itself (17%). PUAs effects seem species-specific, thus affecting some grazers instead of the entire community. Conversely, microphytobenthos affected the meiofauna assemblages, particularly harpacticoids, confirming the role of these organisms as the primary food source of all marine food chain producers. Since PUAs are produced also by several epiphytic diatoms, the understanding of their effects on the community structure and on the relationships among taxa in the field is complicated and requires further in-depth investigations in simplified systems (i.e. microcosms).

Evaluation of co-culturing a diatom and a coccolithophore using different silicate concentrations

Globally, the demand for sustainable energy production and high-value biological compounds have become intertwined in an attempt to improve the feasibility of sustainable algal cultivation. Marine microalgae, especially diatoms and coccolithophores, represent viable cultures that can produce biofuels and high-value compounds. Growing them in co-culture offers the potential to produce lipids and pigments, while also generating CaCO₃ for C sequestration. The main objective of this work was to investigate competition or co-existence of the diatom Chaetoceros gracilis and the coccolithophore Pleurochrysis Carterae. The focus was on the effects of silicate and co-culturing on the growth rate, productivity, pigment production, and ash production for C. gracilis and P. carterae in laboratory conditions. The results showed that, in monoculture, 2-mM Si enhanced the specific growth rate of C. gracilis, but did not affect P. carterae. Regardless of silicate concentration, C. gracilis was more productive than P. carterae. In co-culture, P. carterae had a slower growth rate, indicating an inhibitory effect of C. gracilis on P. carterae. Neither silicate concentration nor co-culturing had an impact on the contents of pigments fucoxanthin, chlorophyll-a, and chlorophyll-c, which means that pigment productivity was proportional to biomass productivity. Finally, the ash content increased in all cultures with the lower silicate concentration (0.2 mM) in the medium. With one exception, the ash content was dominated by SiO₂ regardless of silicate amount, and CaCO₃ was a major part of the ash only when P. carterae was grown separately with the higher silicate level. These results highlight that co-culturing did not provide an advantage for improving biomass, pigments, or CaCO₃ productivity.

Synergistic effect of growth conditions and organic carbon sources for improving biomass production and biodiesel quality by the microalga Choricystis minor var. minor

In the search for microalgae species with potential for biodiesel production, Choricystis minor var. minor has been seen as a promising source of biomass due to its high lipid content and the satisfactory characteristics of its fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs). For this reason, the objective of this study was to investigate the synergistic effect of growth conditions and organic carbon sources on cultivation of this microalga. To do so, experimental cultivations were conducted in photoautotrophic, heterotrophic and mixotrophic metabolisms using glucose, fructose, glycerol or sucrose - in growth conditions that use organic carbon. Thus, growth parameters of the cultures were evaluated and at the end of the cultivations, FAMEs yield and profile were determined by gas chromatography, the efficiency of carbon conversion into biomass was evaluated and a microbial analysis was conducted. Regarding growth conditions, the findings have confirmed that, regardless of the organic carbon source used, the heterotrophic and mixotrophic metabolisms can present advantages over the photoautotrophic one. In addition, biomass production was higher with the use of glucose than with other organic carbon sources, regardless of growth condition (heterotrophic or mixotrophic). Moreover, cultivations with the addition of CO₂ have converted carbon into biomass less efficiently. On the other hand, photoautotrophic cultures presented the lowest bacterial load. In comparison to photoautotrophic and mixotrophic, heterotrophic cultures have led to lower FAMEs content and higher yields of unsaturated fatty acids. The most satisfactory FAMEs profile for biodiesel production was obtained with mixotrophic growth using fructose.

Monoculture-based consumer-resource models predict species dominance in mixed batch cultures of dinoflagellates

Global change will disturb the frequency, scale and distribution of harmful algal blooms (HABs), but we are unable to predict future HABs due to our limited understanding of how physicochemical changes in the environment affect interspecific competition between dinoflagellates. Trait-based mechanistic modelling is an important tool to unravel and quantify various direct and indirect interactions between species. The present study explores whether MacArthur's consumer-resource model can be used as a viable base model to predict dinoflagellate growth in closed multispecies systems. To this end, two batch culture experiments (294 cultures in total) with monocultures and multispecies cultures of Alexandrium minutum, Prorocentrum lima, P. micans, Protoceratium reticulatum and Scrippsiella trochoidea were performed. Despite changes to the relative (different nitrate concentrations) and absolute nutrient availability (dilutions of L1 medium), P. micans outcompeted all other species in mixed cultures. Consumer-resource modelling parameterized using monoculture growth correctly predicted this species dominance (R² between 0.80 and 0.95). Parameter estimates revealed that P. micans had a faster uptake of nitrogen when compared to its competitors, but did not differ in resource efficiency and natural mortality rate. Yet, while the model accurately predicted community dynamics during the growth phase, it was not able to predict their dynamics beyond the point of quiescence. Consumer-resource modelling was shown to differentiate the roles of resource assimilation, resource efficiency, and natural mortality rates in batch culture experiments with minimal data requirements beyond common measurements. The results suggest that consumer-resource models provide a promising basis for trait-based modelling of interspecific competition between (harmful) algae.

New Methods, New Concepts: What Can Be Applied to Freshwater Periphyton?

Microbial interactions play an essential role in aquatic ecosystems and are of the great interest for both marine and freshwater ecologists. Recent development of new technologies and methods allowed to reveal many functional mechanisms and create new concepts. Yet, many fundamental aspects of microbial interactions have been almost exclusively studied for marine pelagic and benthic ecosystems. These studies resulted in a formulation of the Black Queen Hypothesis, a development of the phycosphere concept for pelagic communities, and a realization of microbial communication as a key mechanism for microbial interactions. In freshwater ecosystems, especially for periphyton communities, studies focus mainly on physiology, biodiversity, biological indication, and assessment, but the many aspects of microbial interactions are neglected to a large extent. Since periphyton plays a great role for aquatic nutrient cycling, provides the basis for water purification, and can be regarded as a hotspot of microbial biodiversity, we highlight that more in-depth studies on microbial interactions in periphyton are needed to improve our understanding on functioning of freshwater ecosystems. In this paper we first present an overview on recent concepts (e.g., the "Black Queen Hypothesis") derived from state-of-the-art OMICS methods including metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and metabolomics. We then point to the avenues how these methods can be applied for future studies on biodiversity and the ecological role of freshwater periphyton, a yet largely neglected component of many freshwater ecosystems.

Increased algicidal activity of Aeromonas veronii in response to Microcystis aeruginosa: interspecies crosstalk and secondary metabolites synergism

Toxic Microcystis spp. blooms constitute a serious threat to water quality worldwide. Aeromonas veronii was isolated from Microcystis sp. colonies collected in Lake Kinneret. Spent Aeromonas media inhibits the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa MGK isolated from Lake Kinneret. The inhibition was much stronger when Aeromonas growth medium contained spent media from MGK suggesting that Aeromonas recognized its presence and produced secondary metabolites that inhibit Microcystis growth. Fractionations of the crude extract and analyses of the active fractions identified several secondary metabolites including lumichrome in Aeromonas media. Application of lumichrome at concentrations as low as 4 nM severely inhibited Microcystis growth. Inactivation of aviH in the lumichrome biosynthetic pathway altered the lumichrome level in Aeromonas and the extent of MGK growth inhibition. Conversely, the initial lag in Aeromonas growth was significantly longer when provided with Microcystis spent media but Aeromonas was able to resume normal growth. The longer was pre-exposure to Microcystis spent media the shorter was the lag phase in Aeromonas growth indicating the presence of, and acclimation to, secondary MGK metabolite(s) the nature of which was not revealed. Our study may help to control toxic Microcystis blooms taking advantage of chemical languages used in the interspecies communication.

Isolation of anti-algal substances from Cylindrotheca closterium and their inhibition activity on bloom-forming Prorocentrum donghaiense

This paper studied the allelopathic effect of Cylindrotheca closterium on the growth of Prorocentrum donghaiense, the model of harmful algal blooms in aquatic environment, by the co-culture tests and bioassay-guided fraction methods. The growth of P. donghaiense in co-cultures was observably suppressed by C. closterium, and P. donghaiense biomass in C/P = 3: 1 group increased slowly with a low growth rate of 0.18 d^-1 after 4 days. Petroleum ether (PE) extract derived from C. closterium filtrates was isolated by C18 column and the allelopathy of all isolated fractions for P. donghaiense was investigated. After 96 h cultivation, the inhibition ratio of PE-Ⅲ and PE-Ⅷ fractions on P. donghaiense could reach up to 70.2% and 64.3% at the concentration of 10-fold when compared to control, while the other fractions displayed relatively low inhibitory effects on P. donghaiense. PE-Ⅲ and PE-Ⅷ fractions also decreased the chlorophyll content and maximum quantum yield of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) of P. donghaiense cells. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), one of antioxidant enzymes, reduced around 8.3% and 13.7% following exposure to 2-fold PE-Ⅲ and PE-Ⅷ, and was significantly decreased following higher exposure concentrations. After 96 h of 10-fold PE-Ⅲ and PE-Ⅷ treatments, Catalase (CAT) activity reduced to 44.86% and 46.42% of that observed in the control group. At the same time, a significant increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) contents was observed. These findings suggested that PE-Ⅲ and PE-Ⅷ fractions contained main allelochemicals and possibly acted as promising algistatic agents for emergency handling of P. donghaiense blooms.

Urbanization and Waterborne Pathogen Emergence in Low-Income Countries: Where and How to Conduct Surveys?

A major forthcoming sanitary issue concerns the apparition and spreading of drug-resistant microorganisms, potentially threatening millions of humans. In low-income countries, polluted urban runoff and open sewage channels are major sources of microbes. These microbes join natural microbial communities in aquatic ecosystems already impacted by various chemicals, including antibiotics. These composite microbial communities must adapt to survive in such hostile conditions, sometimes promoting the selection of antibiotic-resistant microbial strains by gene transfer. The low probability of exchanges between planktonic microorganisms within the water column may be significantly improved if their contact was facilitated by particular meeting places. This could be specifically the case within biofilms that develop on the surface of the myriads of floating macroplastics increasingly polluting urban tropical surface waters. Moreover, as uncultivable bacterial strains could be involved, analyses of the microbial communities in their whole have to be performed. This means that new-omic technologies must be routinely implemented in low- and middle-income countries to detect the appearance of resistance genes in microbial ecosystems, especially when considering the new ‘plastic context.’ We summarize the related current knowledge in this short review paper to anticipate new strategies for monitoring and surveying microbial communities.

Physiological differences between free-floating and periphytic filamentous algae, and specific submerged macrophytes induce proliferation of filamentous algae: A novel implication for lake restoration

Restoration of submerged macrophytes is widely applied to counteract eutrophication in shallow lakes. However, proliferation and accumulation of filamentous algae (possessing free-floating and periphytic life forms) hamper growth of submerged macrophytes. Here, we explored factors triggering the excessive proliferation of filamentous algae during lake restoration using field investigations and laboratory experiments. Results showed that, compared with free-floating Oscillatoria sp. (FO), periphytic Oscillatoria sp. (PO) showed faster growth rate, greater photosynthetic capacities and higher phosphorus (P) affinity. Therefore, PO was physiologically competitively superior to FO under low P concentration and improved light conditions. And proliferation of filamentous algae was mainly manifested in periphytic life form. Besides, field results showed that density of filamentous algae in water column might be related to substrate types. Some macrophyte (Ceratophyllum oryzetorum and Potamogeton crispus) might provide proper substrates for proliferation of filamentous algae. Further physiological experiments found that Oscillatoria showed specific eco-physiological responses to different macrophyte species. Hydrilla verticillata and C. oryzetorum promoted growth and photosynthetic activity of Oscillatoria, while Potamogeton malaianus inhibited growth and P uptake of PO. Myriophyllum spicatum exhibited no impact on growth of Oscillatoria. Our results revealed the intrinsic (physiological differences between free-floating and periphytic life forms of filamentous algae) and extrinsic (different macrophytes) factors affect the proliferation of filamentous algae, which are important for guidance on planting of submerged macrophytes during lake restoration.

Habitat species pools shape algal and bacterial communities and their correlations

Understanding of community ecology is scale dependent. When the scale definition changes from subjectively defined "regional species pools" to "habitat species pools", heterogeneity differences occur for microbial communities. However, given the environmental gradients differences among habitats, responses of other organisms and interspecific correlations to habitat species pools may also be heterogeneous. This hypothesis is supported by our research about algal and bacterial communities among four different habitats in littoral zones. In our results, both the algal and bacterial community compositions varied along habitat species pools. Furthermore, at community level, significant correlation was only found between bacterioplankton and phytoplankton in pelagic habitat. And at individual level, the covariant trends between habitat generalists in algal and bacterial communities varied among habitats. Our results indicated that habitat-specific patterns can not only influence the habitat species pools, but also shape the interspecies interaction, and this should be considered in the further study of algae-bacterial correlation.

Variation in allelopathy of extracellular compounds produced by Cylindrotheca closterium against the harmful-algal-bloom dinoflagellate Prorocentrum donghaiense

Allelopathy between algae is an ecological strategy that can facilitate or inhibit the occurrence of algal blooms. The role of allelopathic effects of marine microalgae Cylindrotheca closterium in other phytoplankton population dynamics are still limited. In the current study, the effects of cell-free filtrates of diatom Cylindrotheca closterium on two common dinoflagellates (Prorocentrum donghaiense and Prorocentrum cordatum), a chrysophyceae (Isochrysis galbana) and a diatom (Chaetoceros curvisetus) were investigated within controlled laboratory experiments. It was observed that the growth of P. donghaiense was significantly suppressed and approximately 80% cells disappeared after 8-d exposure, while the other three algae was less sensitive. P. donghaiense was very sensitive to the exudates of C. closterium from the stationary phase by comparing various percentage (10, 30, 50, 70 and 100%) of filtrates. In addition, the allelopathic effects of extracellular compounds of C. closterium extracted by three different organic solvents (ethyl acetate, chloroform and petroleum ether) on P. donghaiense were explored by determining cell density, chlorophyll content and maximum photosystem II (PSII) quantum yield (F_v/F_m). It was found that the compounds extracted by ethyl acetate and chloroform appeared to exhibit less toxicity on P. donghaiense than that of petroleum ether. The present results indicated that the allelochemicals released by C. closterium might be concentrated effectively in the petroleum ether extraction phase, which provided a new perspective for controlling the red tides of P. donghaiense in the East China Sea by means of the ecological inhibitors extracted.

A microalga produces the toxic halogenated anilines 2,4,6-tribromoaniline, 2,4,6-trichloroaniline and their dibromochloro and bromodichloro derivatives that were considered as compounds of exclusive synthetic origin.

Microorganisms-based methods for harmful algal blooms control: A review

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are a worldwide problem with numerous negative effects on water systems, which have prompted researchers to study applicable measures to inhibit and control them. This review summarized the current microorganisms-based methods or technologies aimed at controlling HABs. Based on their characteristics, these methods can be divided into two categories: methods based on single-species microorganisms and methods based on microbial aggregates, and four types: methods for rapid decrease of algal cells density (e.g., alga-bacterium and alga-fungus bioflocculation), inhibition of harmful algal growth, lysis of harmful algae (e.g. algicidal bacteria, fungi, and actinomycete), and methods based on microbial aggregates (periphytons and biofilms). An integrative process of "flocculation-lysis-degradation-nutrients regulation" is proposed to control HABs. This review not only offers a systematic understanding of HABs control technologies based on microorganisms but also elicits a re-thinking of HABs control based on microbial aggregates.

PUFAs and PUAs production in three benthic diatoms from the northern Adriatic Sea

The production of polyunsaturated aldehydes (PUAs) has been reported by many planktonic diatoms, where they have been implicated in deleterious effects on copepod reproduction and growth of closeby microbes or suggested as infochemicals in shaping plankton interactions. This study investigates the production of PUAs by diatoms commonly occurring in the microphytobenthic communities in temperate regions: Tabularia affinis, Proschkinia complanatoides and Navicula sp. Results highlight the production of PUAs by the three benthic diatoms during stationary and decline phases, with intracellular concentrations from 1.8 to 154.4 fmol cell^-1, which are within the range observed for planktonic species. The existence of a large family of PUAs, including some with four unsaturations, such as decatetraenal, undecatetraenal and tridecatetraenal, was observed. Since particulate and dissolved PUAs were positively correlated, together with cell lysis, equivalent concentrations may be released during late growth stages, which may affect benthic invertebrates grazing on them and other microalgae.

Allelopathic effects of diatom filtrates on the toxic benthic dinoflagellate Ostreopsis cf. ovata

Ostreopsis blooms regularly occur in many Mediterranean coastal areas in late summer-autumn. In the northern Adriatic Sea, Ostreopsis blooms affect diatom-dominated microphytobenthic communities. In this study, the effects of the filtrates of some diatom species, both benthic (Tabularia affinis, Proschkinia complanatoides and Navicula sp.) and planktonic (Thalassiosira sp. and Skeletonema marinoi) on cell morphology, cytological features and growth of O. cf. ovata were investigated. Our results showed a marked decrease of O. cf. ovata growth when cells were exposed to all diatom filtrates tested. The highest inhibitions were observed for exposures to P. complanatoides and Navicula sp. filtrates (92.5% and 80%, respectively) and increased with the age of diatom culture. Moreover, a clear DNA degradation and abnormal forms of O. cf. ovata cells (83.8% of the total) were found at the highest concentrations using Navicula sp. filtrate after 10 days of the inoculum.

Sustained High Nutrient Supply As an Allelopathic Trigger between Periphytic Biofilm and Microcystis aeruginosa

Allelopathy among aquatic organisms, especially microorganisms, has received growing attention in recent years for its role in shaping interactions with bloom-forming algae. Many studies have shown that allelopathy occurs and increases under nutrient limiting conditions. However, to date there is no reported direct evidence to indicate that allelopathy occurs under the condition of constant high nutrient supply. Here we report the allelopathic action of periphytic biofilm on bloom-forming cyanobacteria (Microcystis aeruginosa), which was triggered by the stress of high nutrient conditions, and continues while nutrients are maintained at high levels (trophic state index at 159 and 171). The experimental evidence indicates that the electron transport from photosystem II (PS II) to photosystem I (PS I) in M. aeruginosa is interrupted by the identified allelochemicals, (9Z)-Octadec-9-enoic acid and (9Z)-Hexadec-9-enoic acid, leading to the failure of photosynthesis and the subsequent death of M. aeruginosa. Our findings indicate that the nutrient stress of constant high nutrient supply may be a newly recognized trigger causing allelopathy between microbial competitors, and therefore opening a new direction for the better management of ecological processes in cyanobacteria-dominated and hyper-eutrophic waters.
