Abstract
INTRODUCTION In this text, the author's lived experiences as a youth with anorexia nervosa, anxiety, and depression are explored. Experiences with accessing North American health services, both in specialized eating disorder (ED) and disordered eating (DE) settings, as well as in healthcare more broadly are shared. AIM This work seeks to shed light on a patient perspective in mental health and to draw attention to some of the ways that the current framings of EDs and DE within the biomedical system might perpetuate harm. METHODS In this piece, a collection of the author's lived-experiences and interactions with the healthcare system are explored. FINDINGS The medical framing of EDs as a defect of both mind and body can jeopardize one's autonomy and contribute to a sense of hopelessness. As mental health treatment increasingly prioritizes evidence-based approaches and standardized practices, there is a growing concern that this shift risks undermining the autonomy of those it aims to support. The dualistic conceptualizations of mental and physical health in ED/DE treatment, at times, can cause harm, particularly for those who do not present with the physical manifestations of an ED/DE but remain largely affected in day-to-day life. DISCUSSION The imposition of rigid treatment regimens can inadvertently diminish personal agency, overshadowing the nuanced, individualized needs and preferences of patients. Lived experience narratives encompass the personal, subjective insights of individuals navigating mental health challenges, in turn, providing invaluable insight that conventional methods may overlook.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Eating disorders (EDs) are increasingly common, affecting over one million individuals in Canada. Canadian adults (i.e., age 18+) requiring medical stabilization for their eating disorder (ED) may be referred to adult inpatient (IP) ED treatment for care. Recent Canadian publications have brought attention to the need for improved approaches to Canadian ED treatment; urging researchers to seek perspectives of people with lived experience to determine how to best do so. This study explored the perspectives of a sample of individuals in Canada with lived experience to identify recommendations for improvement of adult IP ED treatment programs and processes. METHODS Employing a transformative philosophical view and feminist standpoint theory, this study utilizes a qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological approach to fulfill the objectives. Eleven participants with lived adult IP ED treatment experiences from across Canada were interviewed individually, to discuss their experiences and recommendations regarding referral, transitions into and out of care, and treatment itself using an online video conference platform. Data were analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. A comprehensive list of recommendations was drafted and brought back to participants for feedback. The feedback was implemented to create the final list of recommendations. RESULTS Several limitations of referral, transitions, and treatment, facilitated and exacerbated by stigma at individual and societal levels, were identified by participants. These included guilt and shame upon referral, lack of respect and trust from healthcare providers during transitions, and lack of consideration of social determinants of health during treatment. Participant-informed recommendations, which can be categorized as interim support, individualized care, dignified treatment, resources, and stigma, were identified to ameliorate the experiences of those in Canada with EDs while also combatting stigma. CONCLUSIONS Adult IP ED treatment in Canada is in urgent need of significant change to meet the needs of those requiring care and to address harmful stigma. Implementing participant-informed recommendations may aid in achieving this goal. The meaningful inclusion of those with lived experience, particularly marginalized populations, will be paramount to the development of an approach to adult IP ED treatment that properly serves individuals in Canada who need it.

Abstract
Eating disorders encompass a spectrum of mental health conditions that are characterised by a preoccupation with eating, exercise, body weight or shape. The trajectory of eating disorders can result in hospitalisation for medical complications, such as electrolyte imbalance, extremely low weight and other medical issues that require urgent inpatient attention. Typically, care for adolescents with medically compromised eating disorders occurs in general medical settings, with most care provided by nurses who may or may not have the training and experience to provide quality care for this complex mental health condition. The aim of this scoping review is to examine literature surrounding the experience of nurses caring for adolescents admitted to general medical wards (non-mental health settings) with medically compromised eating disorders. We used Arksey and O'Malley's (2005) five-step scoping review process to conduct this review. A systematic search of the literature located 476 relevant papers, and after screening, 10 were included in the final review. Most included papers were qualitative in methodology, with one using a mixed-methods design. The papers examined in this scoping review found common themes among nurses who were providing care for adolescents with medically compromised eating disorders being cared for in medical wards (non-mental health settings): a lack of preparation to care for individuals with eating disorders, a high emotional and psychological toll on nurses providing care and a degree of stigma towards adolescents with eating disorders, including a belief that eating disorders were a 'choice.' This review indicates that to provide quality and safe care for adolescents with eating disorders admitted to general medical wards, nurses require specialised training. In addition, the care of adolescents with medically compromised eating disorders requires the support of trained mental health nurses, especially where nurses on general medical wards are novice or have limited mental health training. We recommend further research into support structures to prevent burnout and turnover that is prevalent when providing care to individuals with eating disorders.

Abstract
Research into the risk of anorexia nervosa (AN) has examined twin pairs to further the understanding of the contributions of genetics, trait inheritance, and environmental factors to eating disorder (ED) development. Investigations of twin experiences of EDs have been biologically-based and have not considered the qualitative, phenomenological aspects of twin experiences. A gap in the literature exists regarding understanding of discordant twins with EDs. This research was developed in response, with the aim to deepen understanding of AN in discordant twins and to create novel ideas for further research and testing. The case studies presented in this article provide lived experience insights of two identical discordant twin pairs: one twin pair discordant for longstanding AN and one twin pair discordant for 'atypical' AN (the twin with AN has recovered). The perspectives and experiences of each co-twin (one with AN and one without) explore a number of factors that may have contributed to twin discordance in these cases, and how each twin has responded to the impact of AN in their lives. Through use of first-person accounts in case study presentation, this article centres social justice values of lived experience leadership and involvement in research. This article aims to extend current knowledge and understanding of EDs in discordant twins, particularly regarding risk for ED development, ED duration, diagnosis and treatment, and recovery processes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Many individuals diagnosed with an eating disorder (ED) have been exposed to traumatic events, and some of these individuals are diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Although theorized by researchers and clinicians, it is unclear whether traumatic event exposure or PTSD interferes with outcomes from ED treatment. The objective of the current study was to systematically review the literature on traumatic events and/or PTSD as either predictors or moderators of psychological treatment outcomes in EDs. METHOD A PRISMA search was conducted to identify studies that assessed the longitudinal association between traumatic events or PTSD and ED outcomes. Eighteen articles met the inclusion criteria for review. RESULTS Results indicated that traumatic event exposure was associated with greater ED treatment dropout, but individuals with a traumatic event history benefited from treatment similarly to their unexposed peers. Findings also indicated that traumatic events may be associated with greater symptom relapse posttreatment. DISCUSSION Given the limited number of studies examining PTSD, results are considered very tentative; however, similar to studies comparing trauma-exposed and nontrauma-exposed participants, individuals with PTSD may have similar treatment gains compared to individuals without PTSD, but individuals with PTSD may experience greater symptom relapse posttreatment. Future researchers are encouraged to examine whether trauma-informed care or integrated treatment for EDs and PTSD mitigates dropout from treatment and improves symptom remission outcomes. Furthermore, researchers are encouraged to examine how the developmental timing of traumatic events, self-perceived impact of trauma, and cumulative trauma exposure may be associated with differential ED treatment outcomes. PUBLIC SIGNIFICANCE Eating disorders (EDs), trauma, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) often co-occur. Individuals with traumatic event exposure and/or PTSD demonstrate greater ED symptoms; it is unclear whether these individuals benefit similarly in ED treatment to their peers. The current study found that individuals with traumatic event exposure are more likely to drop out of treatment but benefit from treatment with similar symptom remission. Traumatic history was associated with greater relapse posttreatment.

Abstract
Research about stigmatization in eating disorders (EDs) has highlighted stereotypes, prejudices, and discrimination against people with EDs, as well as their harmful effects on them, including self-stigma and a difficult recovery process. Whereas a recent review focused on the consequences of ED stigma, our work aimed to provide a broader synthesis of ED stigma, including its consequences, but also its content and distribution. More precisely, we focused on three EDs-namely, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. Based on a systematic search of four major databases in psychology, the present scoping review includes 46 studies published between 2004 and 2021. We did not conduct any quality assessment of the studies included, because our aim was to provide a wide-ranging overview of these topics instead of an appraisal of evidence answering a precise research question. The review confirmed the existence of a common ED stigma: all individuals affected by EDs reviewed here were perceived as responsible for their situation, and elicited negative emotions and social distance. However, our review also depicted a specific stigma content associated with each ED. In addition, the demographic characteristics of the stigmatizing individuals had a notable influence on the extent of ED stigma: men, young adults, and low-income individuals appeared to be the most stigmatizing toward individuals with EDs. It is important to note that ED stigma had a negative effect on individuals' eating disorders, psychological wellbeing, and treatment-seeking behavior. There is an urgent need for further research on the adverse effects of ED stigma and its prevention.

Abstract
Background: While it is apparent that much has been learned about "mental health literacy" (MHL) relating to certain mental health problems, such as depression, in recent years, what has been learned about MHL relating to eating disorders (ED-MHL) is unclear.Aims: A scoping review was conducted to inform the current state of knowledge in this field.Methods: A systematic search of relevant literature published between 1997 and 2017 was followed by a narrative synthesis of the findings.Results: The number of eligible studies increased from 32 in 1997-2001 to 98 in 2012-2017 (total = 264). Most studies originated from North America or Europe, recruited individuals with EDs receiving treatment or college students and included both female and male or only female participants. The majority of studies examined MHL relating to anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa and examined attitudes which facilitate recognition and appropriate help-seeking and knowledge and beliefs about professional help available.Conclusion: Interest in ED-MHL is increasing and there is now a considerable body of research addressing some aspects of ED-MHL in a range of study populations. Notable gaps in the literature exist, including a paucity of information about ED-MHL relating to EDs other than anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa, ED behaviour in males and the use of self-help interventions. We hope the findings will provide an incentive to further research in these and other aspects of ED-MHL.
