Abstract
BACKGROUND The risk of workplace violence and job burnout among Chinese correctional officers is high. Stress and insomnia may influence the relationship between workplace violence and job burnout; however, this influence has been rarely studied. This study aimed to explore the effect of workplace violence on job burnout among Chinese correctional officers and to assess the contribution of stress and insomnia to this effect. METHODS In this study, the workplace violence scale, the Assens insomnia scale, the 21-item Depression Anxiety Stress Scale, and the Maslach Burnout Inventory-General Survey scale were used to assess the workplace violence, insomnia, stress, and job burnout experienced by the 472 correctional officers, respectively. RESULTS The results showed that (1) workplace violence was significantly and positively predictive of job burnout, (2) workplace violence affected job burnout through the mediation of stress, (3) workplace violence affected job burnout through the mediation of insomnia, and (4) stress and insomnia played fully interlocking mediating roles in the effect of workplace violence on job burnout. CONCLUSION Stress and insomnia may play a full mediating role in the relationship between workplace violence and job burnout. This suggested that correctional officers may take measures to reduce stress and improve insomnia, thereby reducing their job burnout. Further research may focus on the development of effective interventions to reduce stress and improve insomnia among correctional officers.

Abstract
Valid approaches to conveniently measure stress reactivity are needed due to the growing evidence of its health-impairing effects. This study examined whether the Perceived Stress Reactivity Scale (PSRS) predicts cardiovascular and psychological responses to psychosocial stressors during daily life and during a virtual reality (VR) Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). Medical students answered a standardized baseline questionnaire to assess perceived stress reactivity by the PSRS. The PSRS asks participants to rate the intensity of their typical affective responses to common stressors during daily life. They were further asked to participate in a VR-TSST and in an ecological momentary assessment (EMA) over a period of three consecutive workdays during daily life. Blood pressure and self-reported stress were repeatedly, heart rate variability (HRV) continuously measured during the VR-TSST and EMA. Furthermore, participants repeatedly assessed task demands, task control and social conflict during the EMA. Data was analysed using multilevel analysis and multiple linear regression. Results indicate that the PSRS moderates associations between blood pressure (but not HRV) and demands and control during daily life. Furthermore, the PSRS directly predicted self-reported stress, but did not moderate associations between self-reported stress and demands, control and social conflict. The PSRS did not predict physiological and self-reported stress responses to the VR-TSST. This study partly confirmed convergent validity of the PSRS to stress reactivity in daily life. Furthermore, the lack of association between the PSRS and stress responses to the VR-TSST calls for future studies to search for reliable and valid ways to assess stress reactivity.

Abstract
Introduction Chronic stress is a long-term condition that negatively affects cognitive ability and mental health. Individuals who experience chronic stress show poor attentional control. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) modulates executive function domains. Therefore, it is beneficial to investigate whether tDCS of the DLPFC could improve attentional control and relieve stress in chronically stressed individuals. Methods We assess the event-related potentials (ERPs) associated with attentional control in individuals with chronic stress after the tDCS intervention. Forty individuals were randomly assigned to either the anodal tDCS group, which received 5 sessions of the 20 min tDCS over the DLPFC (2 mA; n = 20), or the sham tDCS (n = 20). Participants' stress levels, anxiety, depressive symptoms, and state affects were assessed and compared before and after the intervention. The ERP was collected through electroencephalography (EEG) technology during an attentional network test. Results After the anodal tDCS, we found a significant decrease in the perceived stress scale (PSS) scores (from an average score of 35.05 to 27.75), p = 0.01 as well as the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) scores, p = 0.002. Better performance in the attentional network test, a significant reduction in the N2 amplitudes, and an enhancement in the P3 amplitudes (both cues and targets) were also found in the anodal tDCS group. Discussion Our study findings suggest that tDCS to the left DLPFC could effectively relieve chronic stress, potentially reflected by increased attentional control.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous research regarding the effects of sleep quality and quantity on the acute stress response has yielded inconsistent findings. This may be attributed to various factors, including composite sleep components (i.e., means and daily variations) and mixed cortisol stress response (i.e., reactivity and recovery). Thus, this study aimed to separate the effects of means and daily variations of sleep on the reactivity and recovery of cortisol responses to psychological challenges. METHODS In study 1, we recruited 41 healthy participants (24 women; age range, 18-23 years), monitored their sleep during seven consecutive days via wrist actigraphy and sleep diaries, and adopted the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) paradigm to induce acute stress. Study 2 consisted of a validation experiment using the ScanSTRESS paradigm, which included 77 additional healthy individuals (35 women; age range, 18-26 years). Similarly to the TSST, the ScanSTRESS induces acute stress using uncontrollability and social evaluation. In both studies, saliva samples from the participants were collected before, during, and after the acute stress task. RESULTS Using residual dynamic structural equation modeling, both study 1 and study 2 demonstrated that higher means of objective sleep efficiency, and longer means of objective sleep duration were related to greater cortisol recovery. In addition, fewer daily variations in objective sleep duration were associated with greater cortisol recovery. However, there was no correlation between sleep variables and cortisol reactivity, except for the daily variations in objective sleep duration in study 2. No correlation was observed between subjective sleep and cortisol response to stress. CONCLUSIONS The present study separated two features of multi-day sleep patterns and two components of cortisol stress response, providing a more comprehensive picture of the effect of sleep on the stress-induced salivary cortisol response, and contributing to the future development of targeted interventions for stress-related disorders.

Abstract
There have been steadily increasing studies on the relationship between sleep and stress. However, the findings regarding the effects of sleep on the acute stress response have been inconsistent. Elevated, blunted, or unchanged salivary cortisol stress response have been reported. Therefore, this study conducted a systematic review of previous studies to provide a comprehensive summary of the factors that influence the effects of sleep on the salivary cortisol stress response. We conducted a comprehensive electronic literature search in PubMed, PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, Web of Science, MEDLINE, and EMBASE for human studies published in English (up to June 2019). Finally, 17 articles with participants aged 6.4-72 years were included in this review. We assessed the following factors: designing factors (sleep measurement, stress induction, cortisol sampling period, and time intervals between sleep measurement and the acute stress task), analyzing factors (cortisol analysis), and participants' characteristics (age, sex, and background stress levels); subsequently, we explained conflicting findings across the current literature. Further, we provide study design, analysis, and report suggestions for optimal assessment of the effects of sleep on the acute stress response. This summary of influencing factors and suggestions for future studies could help elucidate the impact of sleep on stress and advance the field.

Abstract
Chronic stress affects brain function, so assessing its hazards is important for mental health. To overcome the limitations of behavioral data, we combined behavioral and event-related potentials (ERPs) in an attention network task. This task allowed us to differentiate between three specific aspects of attention: alerting, orienting, and execution. Forty-one participants under chronic stress and 31 non-stressed participants were enrolled. On the performance level, the chronically stressed group showed a significantly slower task response and lower accuracy. Concerning ERP measures, smaller cue-N1, cue-N2, and larger cue-P3 amplitudes were found in the stressed group, indicating that this group was less able to assign attention to effective information, i.e., they made inefficient use of cues and had difficulty in maintaining alerting. In addition, the stressed group showed larger target-N2 amplitudes, indicating that this group needed to allocate more cognitive resources to deal with the conflict targets task. Subgroup analysis revealed lower target-P3 amplitudes in the stressed than in the non-stressed group. Group differences associated with the attention networks were found at the ERP level. In the stressed group, excessive depletion of resources led to changes in attention control. In this study, we examined the effects of chronic stress on individual executive function from a neurological perspective. The results may benefit the development of interventions to improve executive function in chronically stressed individuals.

Abstract
Besides reducing the burden of aggression and violence on society, the biobehavioral study of aggression can inform our understanding of emotional problems and maladaptive behaviors more broadly, since aggression can often co-occur with psychological disorders (e.g., depression). This article reviews the neuroscience/psychophysiology literature to explain brain processes in aggression that can be targeted to reduce its scourge on society. In particular, the review implicates brain circuitry that is often triggered by feelings of threat, which in turn disrupt higher order cognitive processes and may prompt aggression. One potentially modifiable factor less frequently considered in the study of aggression is sleep insufficiency or problems. The neurophysiological impact of sleep insufficiency can parallel the brain-related risk factors of aggression. Policy recommendations span individual mental health innovations, community-based interventions, and public health campaigns promoting healthy lifestyles to reduce aggression and violence.
