Abstract
OBJECTIVES To assess the contemporary prevalence and decade-long trends of sleep duration, sleep disorders and trouble sleeping among adults in the United States, as well as their risk factors, from 2005 to 2018. MATERIALS AND METHODS We used National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data to calculate the sleep duration and weighted prevalence of sleep disorders and trouble sleeping in adults aged 20 years or older. Sleep duration, sleep disorders and trouble sleeping were assessed by questionnaire. RESULTS A total of 27,399 people were included in the survey on sleep duration, with a weighted percentage of normal sleep (7-8 h/night) of 56.33 % (95 % CI, 53.06-59.60 %) and a weighted percentage of short sleep (5-6 h/night) of 31.73 %. In stratified descriptions, participants aged 40-49 years were more likely to sleep less than five hours, while women aged 80 years and older were more likely to sleep longer and blacks were more likely to sleep shorter. A total of 27,406 participants were included in the survey for sleep disorders. The weighted proportion of the population with sleep disorders was 8.44 % (95 % CI, 7.79-9.8 %). Independent risk factors for sleep disorders were being 40-69 years old, being white, having a high education level, smoking, having hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and BMI ≥ 25. From 2005 to 2014, the prevalence of sleep disorders increased year by year, from 7.44 % in 2005-2006 to 10.40 % in 2013-2014 (P for Trend<0.001). A total of 38,165 participants were included in the survey on trouble sleeping. The weighted proportion of the population with troubled sleeping was 27.30 % (25.70-28.90 %). Independent risk factors for troubled sleeping were being 30-79 years old, being white, having a high education level, smoking, drinking, having hypertension, diabetes, heart disease and BMI ≥ 25. From 2005 to 2018, the prevalence of trouble sleeping increased annually, from 24.44 % in 2005-2006 to 30.58 % in 2017-2018 (P for trend<0.001). CONCLUSION Adults in the United States are likely to have abnormal sleep durations, and the prevalence of sleep disorders and troubled sleeping is on the rise.

Associations of sleep problems with asthma and allergic rhinitis among Chinese preschoolers. Sci Rep 2022; 12:8102. Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the associations of sleep problems with asthma and allergic rhinitis among Chinese preschoolers. This cross-sectional survey was conducted in Guangzhou, China. Children aged 3–6 years were recruited from 32 kindergartens in 7 administrative districts. Asthma, allergic rhinitis and sleep problems were evaluated using a valid questionnaire. Binary logistic regression models were employed to estimate the odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the associations of asthma and allergic rhinitis with short sleep duration, late bedtime and frequent nocturnal awakening. We included 4876 preschool children in the current analysis. Of these, 182 (3.7%) diagnosed as asthma, and 511 (10.5%) diagnosed as allergic rhinitis. Frequent nocturnal awakening was associated with asthma and allergic rhinitis, with adjusted OR were 1.49 (95% CI 1.05–2.13) and 1.59 (95% CI 1.27–1.99), respectively. Subgroup analysis showed the OR for frequent nocturnal awakening with asthma was higher in girls (1.68; 95% CI 1.02–2.78) than in boys (1.35; 95% CI 0.81–2.24), but the OR for frequent nocturnal awakening with allergic rhinitis were similar in girls (1.73; 95% CI 1.15–2.30) and boys (1.57; 95% CI 1.17–2.12). No significant associations of short sleep duration and late bedtime with asthma or allergic rhinitis were identified. Our data suggested that frequent nocturnal awakening was associated with asthma and allergic rhinitis among preschoolers, and the association of frequent nocturnal awakening with asthma differed by gender. Further studies are warranted to address the causal relationship between nocturnal awakening and asthma and allergic rhinitis.

Abstract
The cause of the allergic disease is known to be multifactorial, and there is growing evidence of environmental factors triggering the disease. Indeed, it is essential to find modifiable environmental factors related to allergic disease. Noise is an environmental pollutant causing various health problems, especially when exposed during the night-time. This study assessed the impact of night-time noise exposure in allergic disease. Subjects were selected from a panel data survey containing questions on allergic disease and related factors. Incidence of allergic disease, covariates, and addresses was derived from survey questionnaires. By applying the Land Use Regression modeling method, each subject’s night-time noise estimates were elicited based on the night-time noise level collected from the noise monitoring site. Association between night-time noise difference rate and incidence of asthma were analyzed by Cox proportional hazard regression. Incidence of allergic disease increased when night-time noise difference was positive compared to the negative difference. Additionally, the incidence of allergic disease increased by per interquartile range of night-time noise difference rate. The result showed that exposure to night-time noise tends to increase the risk of allergic disease. With further studies, the result of our study may serve as supplementary data when determining noise limits.

Associations of sleep characteristics with atopic disease: a cross-sectional study among Chinese adolescents. Allergy Asthma Clin Immunol 2021; 17:21. Abstract
Background Adolescence, as a transition between childhood and adulthood, is a critical stage for the long-term control of atopic diseases. We aim to determine if sleep characteristics are involved in the increased risk of atopic disease among adolescents. Methods Adopting the stratified cluster random sampling method, this cross-sectional survey included 4932 participants aged 12–18 years. The Chinese version of adolescent sleep disturbance questionnaire and the adolescent sleep hygiene scale were used to collect information on sleep problems and sleep hygiene, respectively. Logistic regression models were implemented to examine the associations of sleep with atopic diseases. Results Sleep duration was not found to be related with allergic diseases. By contrast, sleep-disordered breathing was associated with an increased risk of asthma (adjusted OR = 1.79, 95% CI 1.25–2.55), allergic rhinitis (adjusted OR = 1.95, 95% CI 1.52–2.49), and eczema (adjusted OR = 1.63, 95% CI 1.23–2.16); poor sleep physiology was correspondent to increased odds of asthma (adjusted OR = 1.69, 95% CI 1.24–2.29), allergic rhinitis (adjusted OR = 1.40, 95% CI 1.13–1.73) and eczema (adjusted OR = 1.66, 95% CI 1.32–2.09); non-optimal sleep environment was associated with an increased prevalence of asthma (adjusted OR = 1.52, 95% CI 1.08–2.12), allergic rhinitis (adjusted OR = 1.32, 95% CI 1.04–1.69) and eczema (adjusted OR = 1.53, 95% CI 1.19–1.96). Conclusions As sleep-disordered breathing, poor sleep physiology and non-optimal sleep environment were associated with a higher risk of allergic diseases, the results of this study provide a new concept for the adjuvant treatment of allergic diseases in adolescents. Management strategies of allergic diseases should take regular screening and targeted treatment of sleep issues into account.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study examined the association between sleep duration trajectories from adolescence to young adulthood and the risk of asthma into young adulthood. METHODS Using data from 10,362 participants in the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) free of asthma at baseline, we constructed trajectories of sleep duration from adolescence (age 13-18 years) to young adulthood (age 24-32 years) and used them to examine the association between sleep duration patterns and the risk of new-onset asthma using a log-binomial regression model after adjusting for potential confounders. RESULTS The results revealed that 14.4% of nonasthmatic participants had persistent short sleep duration, whereas 80.0% had adequate sleep duration from adolescence through young adulthood. Consistently short-sleepers had 1.52 times the risk of new-onset asthma by age 32 years (95% CI 1.11, 2.10) compared with consistently adequate sleepers. The association was stronger in those with a family history of asthma (aRR = 2.43, 95% CI 1.15, 5.13) than in those without such history (aRR = 1.43, 95% CI 1.05, 1.95). CONCLUSIONS We conclude that persistent short sleep duration is associated with an increased risk of new-onset asthma in young adults. This association may be more pronounced among those at high risk of asthma because of family history.

Abstract
Asthma may negatively affect children’s school performance, such as grades and exam results. Results from previous studies have shown varying results and may have suffered from confounding and other biases. We used a Swedish population-based cohort of 570,595 children with data on asthma (including severity and control) in Grades 7–8 and 9, school performance from Grade 9 (grade point sum, non-eligibility for upper secondary school and national test results) and measured confounders from national registers. We used sibling comparisons to account for unmeasured familial factors. Children with asthma and severe asthma performed slightly better in school than children without asthma when adjusting for measured confounders, but the associations were attenuated in sibling comparisons. In contrast, children with uncontrolled asthma performed slightly worse (e.g. Grade 9: βadj = −9.9; 95% CI −12.8 to −7.0; Cohen’s d = 0.16). This association remained for uncontrolled asthma in Grade 9 in sibling comparisons (Grade 9: β = −7.7 points; 95% CI −12.6 to −2.6; Cohen’s d = 0.12), but not for Grades 7–8. The attenuation of estimates when controlling for familial factors using sibling comparisons suggests that the differences were due to familial factors, rather than being causal. The remaining associations in sibling comparisons between uncontrolled asthma in Grade 9 and school performance are consistent with a causal association.

The association between allergic rhinitis and sleep: A systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies. PLoS One 2020; 15:e0228533. Abstract
This systematic review and meta-analysis examines the associations of allergic rhinitis with sleep duration and sleep impairment. Observational studies published before August 2019 were obtained through English language literature searches in the PubMed, Embase, and CINAHL databases. Mean differences and odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals were extracted and used for meta-analysis. Heterogeneity was confirmed by the I2-heterogeneity test. Subgroup analysis was conducted to evaluate the influence of study design. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation approach was used to determine the level of evidence. In total, 2544 records were identified through database searches; 914 duplicate records were excluded, 1452 records were removed after screening of titles and abstracts, 151 records were excluded after full-text screening, and 27 articles were included in the final meta-analyses. A total of 240,706,026 patients (19,444,043 with allergic rhinitis) were considered. No significant difference in sleep duration between the allergic rhinitis and the control groups was found. Patients with allergic rhinitis presented with significantly higher sleep quality scores, sleep disturbances scores, and sleep latency scores; more frequent use of sleep medications; and lower sleep efficiency as measured by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and polysomnography. Meta-analyses for adjusted odds ratios showed that allergic rhinitis was also associated with higher risks of nocturnal dysfunctions, including insomnia, nocturnal enuresis, restless sleep, sleep-disordered breathing, obstructive sleep apnea, and snoring. Meta-analysis for adjusted odds ratio also showed that allergic rhinitis was associated with daytime dysfunction, including difficulty waking up, daytime sleepiness, morning headache, and the use of sleep medications. The overall quality of evidence ranged from low to very low, indicating that caution is required when interpreting these results. This study demonstrates that there is a significant association of AR with sleep characteristics.

Abstract
Abstract Introduction Although many studies are being carried out with sleep bruxism, the literature points to a lack of studies with methodological quality in children. Objective To evaluate the behavioral and clinical aspects associated with probable sleep bruxism in early childhood. Material and method A cross-sectional observational study carried out with 371 children between 4 and 6 years of age. Parents answered a questionnaire with aspects related to their children's sleep behavior. Among the clinical characteristics, the presence of lip sealing, clicking, teeth marks on the jugal mucosa, and the side of the tongue was evaluated. Tooth wear was assessed using the BEWE index criteria. Simple logistic regression models were adjusted for each independent variable, estimating the gross odds ratios with the respective 95% confidence intervals. Variables with P <0.20 in the individual analyzes were adjusted in a multiple logistic regression model, with those with P ≤ 0.05 remaining in the model. Result 42.4% of parents reported that their children gritted their teeth while sleeping. Children who showed wear on their teeth were 1.53 times more likely to grind their teeth. There was no significant association with the other variables analyzed (P > 0.05). Conclusion Behavioral aspects were not associated with probable sleep bruxism. Among the clinical characteristics evaluated, tooth wear showed an association, which may indicate the probable bruxism of sleep in early childhood.

Abstract
Background Over a fifth of children and adolescents suffer with asthma or atopic disease. It is unclear whether asthma impacts academic performance in children and adolescents, and little is known about the association of eczema, food allergy or hayfever and academic performance. Objective To examine whether asthma, eczema, food allergy or hayfever impacts on adolescent academic performance and to assess the role of unmeasured confounding. Methods This study used the Childhood and Adolescent Twin Study of Sweden cohort born 1992‐1998. At age 9‐12 years, parents reported on their child's ever or current asthma, eczema, food allergy and hayfever status (n = 10 963). At age 15, linked national patient and medication register information was used to create current and ever asthma definitions including severe and uncontrolled asthma for the same children. Academic outcomes in Grade 9 (age 15‐16 years) included: eligibility for high school (Grades 10‐12), and total mark of the best 16 subject units, retrieved from the Grade 9 academic register. Whole cohort analyses adjusted for known covariates were performed, and co‐twin control analyses to assess unmeasured confounders. Results There were no associations found for asthma or food allergy at 9‐12 years and academic outcomes in adolescence. In addition, at age 15, there were no statistically significant associations with current, ever, severe or uncontrolled asthma and academic outcomes. Eczema and hayfever at age 9‐12 years were found to be positively associated with academic outcomes; however, co‐twin control analyses did not support these findings, suggesting the main analyses may be subject to unmeasured confounding. Conclusion and clinical relevance Having asthma or an atopic disease during childhood or adolescence does not negatively impact on academic performance. This information can be used by clinicians when talking with children and parents about the implications of living with asthma or atopic disease.

Abstract
UNLABELLED An association between allergic disease, depression and suicidality has been reported. OBJECTIVE To explore the relationships between suicidality and asthma, allergy, internet addiction, stress, sleep quality, pain/discomfort, and depression, among emerging adults. PARTICIPANTS 929 college students completed an online survey between October 2015 and April 2017. METHODS A cross-sectional study using multivariate analysis techniques was implemented. RESULTS Using structural equation modeling, we found that allergies and stress were directly related to pain/discomfort; pain/discomfort was associated to poor sleep, depression, and suicidality. Sleep quality was also affected by stress; while sleep, stress, pain/discomfort, and internet addiction were directly related to depression (all p < .05). Ultimately, four factors impacted suicidality: stress, pain/discomfort, depression, and, indirectly, sleep quality (all p < .05). Although allergy had some effects, these did not reach statistical significance (p < .09). CONCLUSION Findings suggest that allergy might impact suicidality indirectly through increased pain/discomfort, poor sleep, and depression.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Optimal sleep is important for child growth, development, and immune function. We aimed to explore whether sleep disorders were associated with the risk of allergic diseases in Chinese toddlers. METHODS This study included 566 children (aged 23.9 ± 0.7 months; 51.1% boys) in Shanghai, China. Sleep parameters (total sleep time, sleep onset latency, nocturnal awaking and snoring) were assessed by an expanded version of the Brief Infant Sleep Questionnaire (BISQ-expanded). Information on four allergic diseases (wheeze, eczema, food allergy, and allergic rhinitis) in the past year was collected via standard questionnaire and judged by pediatricians. We used logistic regression to calculate odds ratios (ORs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for having any/and each of the four allergic diseases, based on sleep parameters, adjusting for children's age and gender, mode of delivery, any breastfeeding duration, children's body mass index (BMI), children's exposure to passive smoking, maternal education, family income, family allergic history, and children's antibiotic use. RESULTS There were 23.3% of children with at least one of the four allergic diseases. Snoring was significantly associated with increased odds of having any allergy (adjusted OR = 1.95; 95% CI: 1.17, 3.26), eczema (OR = 1.83, 95% CI: 1.03, 3.23) and food allergy (OR = 4.31, 95% CI: 1.23, 15.14), after adjustment for potential confounders. Nocturnal awaking ≥2 times per night was associated with higher risk of food allergy (OR = 3.92, 95% CI: 1.00, 15.35) and wheeze (OR = 6.16, 95% CI: 1.28, 29.74). CONCLUSION In this study, presence of certain sleep disorders was associated with higher risk of having allergic diseases in Chinese toddlers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Difficulty in sleep is one disturbing symptom in adolescents with atopic diseases including asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis. Assuming psychological stress can affect adolescents' health status, impaired sleep quality can be one mediator that negatively impacts the health status of adolescents with atopic disease. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to identify the mediating effect of sleep satisfaction on the relationship between stress and perceived health status in Korean adolescents with atopic disease and to examine the differences among three types of atopic disease. DESIGN A cross-sectional descriptive study was completed based on secondary analysis of raw data from the 2013 9th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey. SETTINGS AND PARTICIPANTS The 21,154 adolescents (29.2%) ever diagnosed and treated for at least one atopic disease regardless of the symptom presence in a recent year were extracted out of 72,435 survey participants. Then, the 13,216 individuals with exclusively single atopic diseases were included in analyzing the mediation model. METHODS Variables including demographics, stress, perceived health status, and sleep satisfaction were included. Pearson correlation, one-way ANOVA, path analysis to define direct/indirect effects with bootstrapping analysis, and multi-group variance analysis were conducted. RESULTS High levels of stress in adolescents with atopic diseases had a significant and direct effect on their negative health status perception for all atopic disease groups. A significant negative mediating effect of sleep satisfaction was identified on the relationship between stress and perceived health status, irrespective of the type of atopic disease. Total effect and remaining direct effect on the path from stress and perceived health status via sleep satisfaction was high in adolescents with atopic dermatitis and allergic rhinitis compared to those with asthma. CONCLUSIONS To improve sleep satisfaction for adolescents with atopic diseases, interventions are needed to enhance the adolescents' perceived health status through stress reduction and sleep quality improvement.

Abstract
2013 was another exciting year for allergy in general and Clinical and Experimental Allergy in particular. In the field of asthma and rhinitis, there continued to be a focus on heterogeneity and phenotypes with increasing use of biostatistical techniques to determine clusters of similar populations. Obesity- and aspirin-associated disease are intriguing associations with asthma which were explored in a number of papers. We published a number of excellent papers on mechanisms of airway inflammation and how this relates to physiology, pathology, genetics and biomarkers in both human and experimental model systems. In terms of mechanisms, there is less on individual cell types in allergic disease at the moment, but the immunology of allergic disease continued to fascinate our authors. Another area that was popular both in the mechanisms and in the epidemiology sections was early life events and how these lead to allergic disease, with an increasing focus on the role of the microbiome and how this influences immune tolerance. In the clinical allergy section, oral immunotherapy for food allergy is clearly a major topic of interest at the moment as was in vitro testing to distinguish between sensitization and allergic disease. There was less on inhalant allergy this year, but a good representation from the drug allergy community including some interesting work on non-IgE-mediated mechanisms. In the allergen section, important new allergens continue to be discovered, but the major focus as in the last couple of years was on working out how component-resolved approaches can improve diagnosis and management of food and venom allergy.

[Prevalence of common allergies in children and adolescents in Germany: results of the KiGGS study: first follow-up (KiGGS Wave 1)]. Abstract
The first follow-up of the German Health Interview and Examination Survey for Children and Adolescents (KiGGS Wave 1) was conducted from 2009 to 2012 as a combined cross-sectional and longitudinal study and provides, among other things, data on allergic diseases. Data collection was carried out by telephone interviews. In total, 6,093 girls and 6,275 boys were included, among them 4,455 newly recruited 0- to 6-year-olds (response 38.8%) and 7,913 KiGGS follow-up participants aged 7-17 years (response 72.9%). Based on parent reports, 15.6% (95% confidence interval 14.7-16.5) of children and adolescents aged 0-17 years were currently affected by at least one atopic disease. The 12-month prevalence rates of hay fever, atopic dermatitis, and asthma were 9.1% (8.4-9.8), 6.0% (5.4-6.6), and 4.1% (3.6-4.6), respectively. In all, 2.2% (1.9-2.6) of the children and adolescents were currently suffering from contact dermatitis. Compared with the baseline KiGGS survey from 2003 to 2006, a higher percentage of participants reported the occurrence of asthma within the past 12 months in the recent KiGGS Wave 1 (4.1 vs. 3.2%; p = 0.0034). The total increase is mainly due to higher prevalence rates among 0- to 6-year-olds, especially in girls. Higher 12-month prevalence rates can be also observed for hay fever among 0- to 6-year-olds, especially in girls, although the total increase is not statistically significant (9.1 vs. 8.3%; p = 0.08). There was a declining trend for atopic dermatitis: 6.8% (2003-2006) vs. 5.4% (2009-2012); p = 0.0015.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exposure to mould or dampness at home has been associated with adverse respiratory effects in all age groups. This exposure has also been related to insomnia in adults. We aimed to investigate the association between exposure to visible mould or dampness at home and sleep problems in children. METHODS The study population consisted of 1719 10-year-old children from the German population-based birth cohort LISAplus with available data on current mould or dampness at home and sleep problems. The presence of visible mould or dampness at home was assessed by questionnaire. Parent-reported sleep problems of their child were analysed by four binary variables: presence of any sleep problems, problems to fall asleep, problems sleeping through the night and a 24h sleep time of less than 9h. Logistic regression models adjusted for study centre, sex, age and level of parental education were applied to examine the association between visible mould or dampness at home and sleep problems. Sensitivity analyses included a further adjustment for bedroom sharing and subgroup analyses in children without current allergic diseases. RESULTS Thirteen percent of parents reported visible mould or dampness at home. We observed increased risks for all four sleep problem variables for children exposed to visible mould or dampness at home. Results were significant for any sleep problems (odds ratio (OR)=1.77 (95%-confidence interval (CI): 1.21-2.60), problems sleeping through the night (OR=2.52(1.27-5.00) and a short sleep time (OR=1.68(1.09-2.61)). While a further adjustment for bedroom sharing and the exclusion of children with asthma or eczema led to similar results, only the association with a short sleep time was still present in children without allergic rhinoconjunctivitis. CONCLUSION Our data suggests that visible mould or dampness at home might negatively influence sleep in children. The influence of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis on this association needs to be investigated in future studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of our study was to evaluate the association between environmental factors, sleep duration, and sleep bruxism (SB) in schoolchildren. METHODS A case-control study was performed. Individuals participating in the study were randomly chosen from public and private schools in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. A total of 120 children with bruxism and 240 without bruxism (mean age, 8 years) participated in our study. A questionnaire for parents was used to collect data based on criteria taken from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Conditional binary logistic regression statistical tests and χ2 tests were used for analysis. RESULTS The final logistical model found that children with a median sleep time < or = 8 h per night (odds ratio [OR], 2.561 [95% confidence interval {CI}, 1.480-4.433]), who did not enjoy a good night's sleep (OR, 3.253 [95% CI, 1.600-6.615]), who slept with noise in the room (OR, 2.699 [95% CI, 1.645-4.429]), and who had the light on (OR, 2.370 [95% CI, 1.446-3.884]), were more likely to have SB. CONCLUSION Children who sleep for less than 8h a night are more likely to have SB. Light and noise in the room were two predisposing factors for the occurrence of SB.
