Abstract
Osseointegration is a complex process that involves the interaction of dental implants, bone, and the immune system. Preclinical testing was carried out to develop a better understanding of the mechanism. Micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) imaging techniques and immunohistochemistry are excellent tools for this objective as both enable quantitative assessment of bone microarchitecture and intercellular interaction. An extensive literature search was conducted using the databases PubMed, Science Direct, Wiley Online, Proquest and Ebscohost from January 2011 to January 2021. Among the publications retrieved, the rat model was the most frequently used experimental protocol, with the tibia being the most frequently implanted site. The region of interest demonstrates a high degree of homogeneity as measured by trabecula but varies in size and shape. The most frequently mentioned micro-CT bone parameter and immunohistochemistry bone markers were bone volume per total volume (BV/TV) and runt-related transcription factors (RUNX). Animal models, micro-CT analysis methods, and immunohistochemistry biomarkers yielded a variety of results in the studies. Understanding bone architecture and the remodeling process will aid in the selection of a viable model for a specific research topic.

Abstract
This study investigated the influence of resveratrol on peri-implant repair and its effects on bone-related markers in ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis in rats. Animals were divided into: OVX+PLAC (n = 10): ovariectomized animals treated with placebo; OVX+RESV (n = 10): OVX treated with resveratrol; OVX+PLAC+ZOL (n = 10): OVX treated with PLAC and zoledronate; OVX+RESV+ZOL (n = 10): OVX treated with RESV and ZOL; and SHOVX+PLAC (n = 10): sham ovariectomy treated with PLAC. RESV and PLAC were administrated after ovariectomy and ZOL after six weeks after OVX, until the end of experiment. One implant was inserted in each tibiae of animals 18 weeks after ovariectomy. After 4 weeks, one implant was removed for counter-torque, and peri-implant tissue was collected for mRNA quantification of several osteogenic markers by PCR. The other tibia was submitted to micro-computed tomography analysis. Reduced counter-torque values, bone-implant contact (BIC) and bone volume fraction (BV/TV), and higher bone porosity (BP) were detected in OVX+PLAC group when compared to SHOVX+PLAC (p < 0.05). OVX+RESV rats presented lower BIC, BV/TV, and trabecular number (Tb.N), and augmented BP and trabecular spacing (Tb.Sp) when compared to SHOVX+PLAC (p < 0.05). Higher Tb.N and connectivity density (Conn.Dn) and reduced Tb.Sp were observed in OVX rats treated with ZOL, independently of RESV, when compared to OVX+PLAC and OVX+RESV groups (p < 0.05), whereas the combination ZOL+RESV promoted lower BP when compared to OVT+PLAC and OVX+RESV (p < 0.05). Gene expression was not influenced by RESV (p > 0.05), whereas ZOL promoted up-regulation of BMP-2 (p<0.05). RESV did not improve peri-implant bone repair in rats with ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis.

Abstract
Peri-implants is a chronic disease leads to the bone resorption and loss of implants. Polygoni Cuspidati Rhizoma (PCRER), a traditional Chinese herbal has been used to treat diseases of bone metabolism. However, its mechanism of anti-bone absorption still remains unknown. We aimed to identify its molecular target and the mechanism involved in PCRER potential treatment theory to Peri-implants by network pharmacology. The active ingredients of PCRER and potential disease-related targets were retrieved from TCMSP, Swiss Target Prediction, SEA databases and then combined with the Peri-implants disease differential genes obtained in the GEO microarray database. The crossed genes were used to protein–protein interaction (PPI) construction and Gene Ontology (GO) and KEGG enrichment analysis. Using STRING database and Cytoscape plug-in to build protein interaction network and screen the hub genes and verified through molecular docking by AutoDock vina software. A total of 13 active compounds and 90 cross targets of PCRER were selected for analysis. The GO and KEGG enrichment analysis indicated that the anti-Peri-implants targets of PCRER mainly play a role in the response in IL-17 signaling, Calcium signaling pathway, Toll-like receptor signaling pathway, TNF signaling pathway among others. And CytoHubba screened ten hub genes (MMP9, IL6, MPO, IL1B, SELL, IFNG, CXCL8, CXCL2, PTPRC, PECAM1). Finally, the molecular docking results indicated the good binding ability with active compounds and hub genes. PCRER’s core components are expected to be effective drugs to treat Peri-implants by anti-inflammation, promotes bone metabolism. Our study provides new thoughts into the development of natural medicine for the prevention and treatment of Peri-implants.

Abstract
DM has a high prevalence worldwide and exerts a negative influence on bone repair around dental implants. Modifications of the microgeometry of implants have been related to positive results in bone repair. This study assessed, for the first time, the influence of an implant with modified macrodesign based on the presence of a healing chamber in the pattern of peri-implant repair under diabetic conditions. Thirty Wistar rats were assigned to receive one titanium implant in each tibia (Control Implant (conventional macrogeometry) or Test Implant (modified macrogeometry)) according to the following groups: Non-DM + Control Implant; Non-DM + Test Implant; DM + Control Implant; DM + Test Implant. One month from the surgeries, the implants were removed for counter-torque, and the bone tissue surrounding the implants was stored for the mRNA quantification of bone-related markers. Implants located on DM animals presented lower counter-torque values in comparison with Non-DM ones, independently of macrodesign (p < 0.05). Besides, higher biomechanical retention levels were observed in implants with modified macrogeometry than in the controls in both Non-DM and DM groups (p < 0.05). Moreover, the modified macrogeometry upregulated OPN mRNA in comparison with the control group in Non-DM and DM rats (p < 0.05). Peri-implant bone repair may profit from the use of implants with modified macrogeometry in the presence of diabetes mellitus, as they offer higher biomechanical retention and positive modulation of important bone markers in peri-implant bone tissue.

Abstract
Despite the current advances in micro-CT analysis, the influence of some image acquisition parameters on the morphometric assessment outcome have not been fully elucidated. The aim of this study was to determine whether data binning and frame averaging affect the morphometric outcome of bone repair assessment using micro-CT. Four Wistar rats' tibiae with a surgically created bone defect were imaged with micro-CT six times each, frame averaging set to 1 and 2, and data binning set to 1, 2 and 4, for each of the averaging values. Two-way ANOVA followed by Bonferroni tests assessed the significance of frame averaging and data binning on a set of morphometric parameters assessed in the image volumes (p < 0.01). The effect of frame averaging was not significant for any of the assessed parameters. Increased data binning led to larger trabecular thickness. In contrast, smaller bone volume fraction and bone volume were found as data binning increased. Trabeculae number and trabecular separation were not influenced by any of the parameters. In conclusion, the morphometric outcome of bone repair assessment in micro-CT demonstrated dependency upon data binning, but not frame averaging. Therefore, image acquisition of small anatomical structures (e.g., rat trabeculae) should be performed without data binning.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Investigate the impact of resveratrol (RESV) on peri-implant repair and its effect on bone-related markers in rats with induced diabetes mellitus (DM). MATERIAL AND METHODS Ninety rats were divided into: DM + RESV (n = 18); DM + placebo (PLAC) (n = 18); DM + insulin (INS) (n = 18); DM + RESV + INS (n = 18); Non-DM (n = 18). Diabetes was induced by streptozotocin. One screw-shaped titanium implant was inserted in each tibiae of animals. Treatments were administered during 30 days. After, one of the implants was removed for counter-torque and the peri-implant tissue was collected for mRNA quantification of BMP-2, OPN, Runx2, Lrp-5, Osx, β-catenin, Dkk1, OPG, and RANKL by Real-time PCR. The other tibia was submitted to MicroCT analysis to measure: bone volume (BV/TV), trabecular thickness (Tb.Th) and bone-implant contact (BIC). RESULTS Higher counter-torque values were observed for implant removal in DM + RESV, DM + RESV + INS and Non-DM groups when compared to DM + PLAC (p < .05). Augmented Tb.Th was observed in DM + RESV and Non-DM when compared to DM + PLAC group (p < .05), whereas higher BIC was detected in DM + RESV, DM + RESV + INS and Non-DM animals when compared to DM + PLAC (p < .05). Levels of RANKL were downregulated by the RESV and/or INS therapy, whereas only the association of RESV and INS upregulated the levels of Runx2 (p < .05). CONCLUSIONS The therapy with RESV may favour peri-implant bone repair improving bone formation around implants.

Abstract
Several factors affect dental implant osseointegration, including surgical issues, bone quality and quantity, and host-related factors, such as patients' nutritional status. Many micronutrients might play a key role in dental implant osseointegration by influencing some alveolar bone parameters, such as healing of the alveolus after tooth extraction. This scoping review aims to summarize the role of dietary supplements in optimizing osseointegration after implant insertion surgery. A technical expert panel (TEP) of 11 medical specialists with expertise in oral surgery, bone metabolism, nutrition, and orthopedic surgery performed the review following the PRISMA-ScR (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews) model. The TEP identified micronutrients from the "European Union (EU) Register of nutrition and health claims made on foods" that have a relationship with bone and tooth health, and planned a PubMed search, selecting micronutrients previously identified as MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) terms and adding to each of them the words "dental implants" and "osseointegration". The TEP identified 19 studies concerning vitamin D, magnesium, resveratrol, vitamin C, a mixture of calcium, magnesium, zinc, and vitamin D, and synthetic bone mineral. However, several micronutrients are non-authorized by the "EU Register on nutrition and health claims" for improving bone and/or tooth health. Our scoping review suggests a limited role of nutraceuticals in promoting osseointegration of dental implants, although, in some cases, such as for vitamin D deficiency, there is a clear link among their deficit, reduced osseointegration, and early implant failure, thus requiring an adequate supplementation.
