Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The advantages and disadvantages of frequently changing sides while masticating remain unclear. PURPOSE The purpose of this clinical study was to determine the effect of varying the frequency of masticatory side switches on masticatory mixing ability and sensory perception in dentate adults. MATERIAL AND METHODS This nonblinded, randomized 12-period crossover study, conducted at Barcelona Dental School from January to March 2022, included 36 healthy adults with natural dentitions (median age, 23.5 years; 26 women). Participants were randomly allocated to 12 sequences and performed 12 masticatory assays masticating a 2-colored gum for 40 cycles each using the following masticatory styles as interventions: freestyle, unilateral right, unilateral left, and switching sides 5%, 15%, and 25%. The primary outcome was the mixing ability index (MAI), defined as the standard deviation of the red channel intensity of the masticated gum in the color-histogram plugin of the ImageJ software program. Participants also rated the perceived flavor intensity and salivary flow on a visual analog scale. Data were analyzed by repeated measures analysis of variance (α=.05). RESULTS The MAI was similar for all masticatory styles (P=.63). Participants perceived greater flavor intensity (mean difference: 8%, 95% CI: 1% to 15%) and salivary flow (mean difference: 11%, 95% CI: 0% to 21%) with 25% side switching compared with freestyle or unilateral mastication. CONCLUSIONS Frequently switching the masticatory side while masticating gum does not alter the mixing ability, but it appears to enhance salivary flow and flavor intensity.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the current status of chewing ability and analyze the risk factors among Chinese community-dwelling older adults. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, color-changeable gum and a color difference meter were used to assess chewing ability in the population. The statistical analysis employed multivariate logistic regression models to identify and quantify the factors influencing chewing ability. RESULTS A total of 373 community-dwelling adults aged 65 and older in Chengdu, in the west of China, were included in this study; 64 individuals (17.2%) exhibited signs of poor chewing ability. Female (odds ratio [OR]: 0.124, 95% CI: 0.057-0.268, p < .001), education level with college degree and above (OR: 0.114, 95% CI: 0.030-0.434, p = .001), number of teeth less than 20 (OR: 5.401, 95% CI: 2.509-11.626, p < .001), and decreased oral diadochokinesis (OR: 4.445, 95% CI: 1.775-11.132, p = .001) were significant factors in chewing ability in this study, after adjustment for potential variables. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of decreased chewing ability among Chinese community-dwelling older adults was 17.2% and decreased chewing ability was associated with men, lower education level, less than 20 teeth and decreased oral diadochokinesis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This cross-sectional study aimed to establish normative values for masticatory side switch (MSS) frequency in young Mexican adults and to assess the relationship between various indices and MSS frequency when masticating different chewing materials. DESIGN We enrolled 101 dentate adults and performed four masticatory assays that involved masticating different chewing materials (i.e., two-colored chewing gum, sweet cracker, salty cracker, and bread). Participants were asked to eat and swallow these foods and to chew the gum for 40 cycles and the following indices were determined: MSS index (MSSI), unilateral chewing index, chewing cycle duration, and number of cycles before terminal swallowing. The participants then rated perceived flavor intensity, salivary flow, and muscle fatigue during each trial. RESULTS The MSSI ranged from 0.03-0.06 (10th percentile) to 0.48-0.54 (90th percentile). A repeated-measures general linear model revealed a mean MSSI value of 0.28 (95 %CI, 0.25-0.30) adjusted by several factors. Male sex, soft food, and the last chewing period were associated with lower MSS frequency. Spearman's test showed a high correlation for the MSSI among the different foods. MSSI correlated negatively with the unilateral chewing index for each chewing material and with number of cycles for the sweet cracker. However, no significant correlation was detected between MSSI and sensory perception. CONCLUSIONS In healthy dentate individuals, the mean MSS relative frequency is 25-30 % with an 80-central percentile of 5-50 % of the maximum possible side changes. Lower MSS frequencies were detected in men, when chewing soft food, and during the final chewing period.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to evaluate masticatory performance in cases where one molar was missing. METHODS Participants were 156 adults with one molar missing from their natural teeth, who were divided into group A (without prosthetic treatment) and group B (with prosthetic treatment). The non-missing side was designated as A1 or B1, and the missing side was designated as A2 or B2. The amount of glucose eluted (AG) when the participants chewed a gummy jelly was measured and used as a parameter for masticatory performance. AG was compared between the non-missing side (A1, B1) and missing side (A2, B2), and between the first molar missing group and second molar missing group. RESULTS AG was significantly greater on the dentate side (P < 0.001) and was significantly less in the A2 group when the first molar was missing (P = 0.002). The rate of decrease of AG was 11.1%, 14.3%, and 8.4% in groups A+B, A, and B, respectively. CONCLUSION Masticatory performance appears to decrease even with only one missing molar. Although improvement is achieved by prosthetic treatment, performance remains inferior to that on the dentate side.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aims of this systematic review were to evaluate the clinical masticatory performance of implant-supported restorations, observe the occlusal force changes in the distribution of the implant restoration and reveal the positive and negative contributing factors of implant design and components based on the outcomes of digital occlusal measurement. MATERIAL AND METHODS An extensive search was conducted through PubMed and CENTRAL to identify clinical trials on implant-retained restorations using digital occlusal analysis methods. Two researchers assessed the identified studies and data extraction independently, and the data synthesis strategies without meta-analysis that summarizes the effect estimates were adopted. RESULTS The search screened 3821 titles and abstracts, then full-text analysis for 26 articles was performed, and 14 studies were included in the quantitative synthesis. Four of six studies for implant-retained overdenture showed statistically significant improved bite force when immediate loading (p = .00045, .00005, .00055, and .00005, respectively), and no statistically significant results in the other two studies (p = .225, .371, respectively.) However, the results of the favoured intervention were not statistically significant (p = .104, .166, respectively) in two studies of single posterior implant restorations. In all three studies, the bite force distributed on the implant prostheses of partially fixed implant-retained restoration increased statistically significantly (p = .013, .001, .05, respectively). CONCLUSIONS The edentulous restoration supported by implants seems to significantly improves bite force and chewing efficiency compared with conventional dentures. Regular quantitative occlusal measurement is recommended to avoid the possible risk of overload. Smaller implants size and relatively small and flexible attachment designs may be more conducive to the stability and retention of the restoration of atrophy of alveolar bone.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is not clear to what extent chewing is improved by unilateral oral rehabilitation with implant-supported fixed partial prostheses (ISFPPs). OBJECTIVES This study aimed to investigate whether patients treated with unilateral ISFPPs in the maxilla use their prostheses during mastication to the same extent as they used their contralateral natural teeth. A further aim was to investigate whether there is a correlation between preferred chewing side and laterality. METHODS Chewing side preference was assessed in 15 participants treated with unilateral ISFPPs in the maxilla. The first, second, third, fifth and tenth chewing cycles were assessed, and the test was repeated 10 times. All participants also answered a questionnaire about their chewing side preference. RESULTS Most of the participants presented bilateral chewing, but two (13%) chewed only on the ISFPP. There was no statistically significant association between the objectively assessed chewing side and dental status (natural teeth or ISFPPs) during any of the recorded chewing cycles (p > .1). There were statistically significant correlations between both the subjectively reported usually preferred chewing side and the subjective chewing side preference during the test and the objectively assessed chewing side for the first three chewing cycles (p < .01). No correlation was found between handedness and the objectively assessed chewing side. CONCLUSION In the present study, most participants chewed bilaterally, and chewing was performed both on the ISFPP and on the natural teeth. No correlation was found between the preferred chewing side, objectively or subjectively determined and laterality.

Retrospective Study of Biohorizons® Implants Placed by Postgraduate Students at the University of Barcelona. APPLIED SCIENCES-BASEL 2022. Abstract
The study aimed to evaluate the survival and failure rate, in the short- and medium-term, in addition to its relationship with risk factors, in implants placed by postgraduate students of the Master of Medicine, Surgery, and Oral Implantology course from the University of Barcelona. The study was designed including 192 patients with 422 implants placed between 2015 and 2018. Variables of implant failure were evaluated and related. Failure was split into early failure and late failure. Qualitative data were compared using the chi-squared test, taking p ≤ 0.05 as a significant value. The comparison of quantitative variables was carried out using the Student’s t-test for independent samples. The survival rate in a period of 6 months to 3 years was 97.87%. The mean age of the patients was (54.5 ± 13), and the largest number of implants were placed in the 51–60 age range. The failure rate was 2.13% (N = 9), 6 failed early and 3 failed after definitive prosthetic loading, with a p value < 0.0001. When comparing the failures according to their location in the anterior/posterior sector of the arch, the anterior sector showed statistically significant results (p = 0.027). Failed implants had a statistically significant relationship when they were placed in the anterior sector and were performed in the early stage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationships between the frequency of masticatory side switches (MSS) and other aspects of masticatory function are not clear. OBJECTIVES In this study, we determined the effect of MSS frequency on masticatory performance and rhythm in dentate adults and explored the between-subject relationships among side switch frequency, masticatory rhythm, and laterality. METHODS In this crossover study, subjects performed six masticatory patterns of five trials each, chewing bagged silicone for 20 cycles. The six patterns were freestyle, unilateral right, unilateral left, and switching sides one, three, and five times. Masticatory performance and rhythm were determined for each style by median particle size (MPS) and chewing cycle duration, respectively. In the freestyle mastication pattern, masticatory laterality was assessed by the unilateral chewing index and the frequency of MSS was assessed by the MSS Index. Data were analyzed using Friedman's test and repeated-measures analysis of variance. RESULTS We included 29 participants (15 women; median age, 23 years). No significant between-subjects differences in the MPS were detected obtained by switching one, three, or five times per trial. Chewing cycle duration increased with the MSS number per trial. During freestyle mastication, the MSS Index was inversely correlated with the unilateral chewing index (Rho -0.569; 95%CI -0.25 to -0.78; P=0.001; Spearman test), but not with the MPS or chewing cycle duration. CONCLUSION Differences in MSS frequency do not affect masticatory performance, but they do alter the masticatory rhythm. Individuals with a higher MSS frequency also have a more symmetrical chewing pattern.

Abstract
Objectives The purposes of this study were to analyze the effects of single posterior implant restorations delivery on the redistribution of bite force and to evaluate the changes in occlusal force distribution of prostheses and potential influencing factors on occlusion variation at different stages. Materials and methods Thirty-two single posterior restorations in 30 participants (18 women and 12 men aged 27 to 75 years) were placed into either a unilateral single-tooth defect (n = 17) or on either side of a bilateral teeth defects (n = 15). The bite force (%) of the prostheses, teeth and segments at the maximum intercuspation position (MIP) was evaluated using a T-scan at 5 stages (pre-placement, immediately following placement, and 2 weeks, 3 months, and 6 months post-placement). Results The occlusal force of implant-supported prostheses was significantly (P = .000) lower than those of the control natural teeth at the baseline, then no significant difference was found with that of the mesial teeth at 3 months, and finally it was significantly (P = .000) lower than that of the distal teeth at 6 months; meanwhile, it significantly (P = .008) increased by a mean of 2.04 times from 2 weeks (3.39 ± 2.61%) to 3 months (6.90 ± 4.77%), whereas no significant difference (P = .900) was found from 3 months (6.90 ± 4.77%) to 6 months (7.31 ± 4.60%). In addition, the bite force of the posterior segment on the restored side of both unilateral and bilateral gaps was significantly (P = .013,.001) improved by 3.31% and 6.83%, respectively, although the discrepancy in bite force significantly (P = .039) increased from an initial 3.52% to 5.02% for subjects with bilateral defects, accompanying increases in the proportion (15.38%) of the level III bilateral bite force deviation (P >.05). Conclusions Bite force and masticatory ability can be improved with the immediate delivery of a single posterior implant restoration. The bite force distributed on the implant prosthesis inevitably increases after placement of implant prostheses, a routine follow-up and occlusal evaluation are strongly needed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Clinical evidence demonstrating the effectiveness of implants in preventing tooth loss is limited because of the many risk factors involved in tooth loss. This retrospective cohort study investigated whether an implant in the molar region of a distal free-end edentulous space affects the loss of the most distal tooth after 6 years, adjusting for other risk factors associated with tooth loss using propensity score matching analysis. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 571 subjects and 1,085 teeth adjacent to a distal free-end edentulous space were evaluated. At baseline, the 1,085 teeth were divided into two groups according to the presence or absence of a molar implant with a fixed dental prosthesis in the distal free-end edentulous space. Propensity score matching analysis was used to reduce the effects of bias by matching teeth with and without implants according to similar background factors at baseline. The adjusted variables were age group, occlusal support status, Kennedy classification, tooth position, tooth type, restoration status, dental caries, periodontal pocket depth, and condition of the opposing tooth. RESULTS A total of 56 teeth (28 associated with a molar implant; 28 with no implant) were enrolled according to propensity score matching. Fisher's exact test showed that a molar implant significantly protected the tooth adjacent to the distal free-end edentulous space (p = .01). CONCLUSIONS Within the limitations of this retrospective cohort study, it was found that implants in free-end edentulous spaces may be beneficial in extending the longevity of adjacent teeth. Further research will be necessary to confirm this finding.

Marginal Bone Loss in Implants with External Connection versus Internal Conical Connection Prior to Prosthetic Loading. A Randomized Clinical Study. COATINGS 2020. Abstract
Introduction: The prosthetic connection of implants has been related to the loss of marginal bone. The aim of this study was to evaluate bone loss around external connection (EC) and internal conical connection (ICC) implants prior to prosthetic loading. Material and methods: A randomized clinical trial (RCT) was carried out, with a sample size of 93 implants (31 EC and 62 ICC) placed in 27 patients. Radiological controls were performed and stability was measured by resonance frequency analysis (RFA) on the day of placement, at 1 month and at 4 months after the placement. Results: Bone loss in EC implants was not statistically different than in ICC implants between the time of placement (T0) and the subsequent month (T1): (EC = 0.18 mm and ICC = 0.17 mm). Between one month (T1) and four months (T2): (EC = 0.39 mm and ICC = 0.19 mm) this difference was highly significant (p = 0.00). Bone loss between T0 and T2 was significantly lower in the ICC (EC = 0.57 mm and ICC = 0.36 mm), (p = 0.01). The overall success rate of the implants was 97.8%. The stability of the implants increased from 70.69 (T0) to 73.91 (T1) and 75.32 (T2). Conclusions: ICC showed less bone loss up to the time of prosthesis placement. Such bone loss did not have a significant impact on bone stability. Long term RCTs are needed to demonstrate whether this bone loss, which is more pronounced at the beginning in EC, tends to stabilize and equate to ICC.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Whether treatment with an implant-supported fixed partial prosthesis (ISFPP) affects the masticatory rhythm in patients with unilateral posterior missing teeth is unclear. PURPOSE The purpose of this prospective clinical study was to determine the change in masticatory rhythm in participants with unilateral posterior missing teeth 3 months after treatment with an ISFPP and to assess whether treatment influenced the stability of the masticatory rhythm. MATERIAL AND METHODS Thirty participants (mean age 59 years; 17 women) with unilateral posterior missing teeth were treated with 1-, 2-, or 3-unit ISFPPs. Ten healthy individuals (mean age 36 years; 8 women) with a complete natural dentition were included in a control group. In this prospective study, each participant performed 3 masticatory assays (freestyle, unilateral right, and unilateral left) at baseline and at the 3-month follow-up. Each assay comprised 5 trials of 20 cycles masticating pieces of silicone placed in a latex bag. The time needed to complete the 20 masticatory cycles per trial was measured, and the mean masticatory frequency was calculated for each assay. Coefficients of variation were then calculated from the 5 mean values of the masticatory trials. Differences in the data at 3 months and baseline were analyzed by using the Wilcoxon or paired t tests. The control and treated groups were compared by analysis of variance or Mann-Whitney U tests (α=.05). RESULTS After 3 months, participants treated with ISFPPs showed an increase of 8.7% in masticatory frequency during freestyle mastication (P<.001) and an 8.0% increase during unilateral mastication on the treated side (P<.01). At baseline, the coefficient of variation of masticatory frequency on the treated side was higher in the ISFPP group than in the control group during unilateral mastication (P=.033). Three months after treatment, there was a significant reduction in the coefficient of variation during unilateral mastication on the treated side of the ISFPP group (P<.001). The treatment group also reached a masticatory frequency similar to that of the control group (75 and 78 cycles per minute, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Treatment with ISFPPs accelerated the masticatory rhythm of individuals with unilateral posterior missing teeth, who achieve similar rhythms to those with complete natural dentitions. The stability of the masticatory rhythm was also restored, indicating an improvement in masticatory function.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to compare the nutritional statuses and masticatory function of the non-indigenous and indigenous adult people of the state of Nayarit, Mexico. DESIGN Forty-two indigenous (Cora or Huichol ethnic group) and 100 non-indigenous people, all adults with natural dentition, participated in this cross-sectional study. They performed a free-style masticatory test consisting five trials of chewing silicon pieces for 20 cycles. Masticatory performance was determined by sieving the silicon particles, masticatory laterality was determined by calculating the asymmetry index, and the cycle duration was also recorded. Weight and body fat mass were measured using a portable digital weighing machine and height and body circumferences were recorded to calculate the body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage, and the waist-hip ratio. Each aspect of masticatory function and each nutritional variable were compared using T-test, analysis of variance, and Kruskal-Wallis or Mann-Whitney tests, as appropriate. RESULTS Body fat percentage, BMI, and waist-hip ratio were higher (P < 0.0005) in the indigenous group compared to the non-indigenous. The indigenous group had a significantly shorter stature than the non-indigenous group. Cora group had a higher BMI and higher percentage of body fat than the Huichol group (P < 0.05). No significant differences were detected between the groups for any aspect of masticatory function. CONCLUSIONS Indigenous people from the Nayarit, especially the Cora ethnic group, are more obese, have more total body fat, and more abdominal fat than non-indigenous people. Indigenous people show similar masticatory function.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study assessed changes in masticatory laterality in patients with unilateral posterior missing teeth 3 months after treatment with an implant-supported fixed partial prosthesis (ISFPP). METHODS Thirty patients with unilateral posterior missing teeth participated in this prospective study. They were treated with one-, two- or three-unit ISFPPs. The control group comprised 10 healthy individuals with complete natural dentition. Each participant performed masticatory assays at baseline and at 3-month follow-up, chewing pieces of silicon inside a latex bag. Masticatory laterality was determined using three different methods: assessment of the first chewing cycle, of all cycles and application of a visual analogue scale. Data were compared using the Kruskal-Wallis or the Mann-Whitney U test as appropriate. RESULTS Three months after treatment, a significant change in the asymmetry index towards the treated side and a significant reduction in the Unilateral Chewing Index were observed in the ISFPP group. No significant differences in masticatory laterality between groups were detected at 3-month follow-up, regardless of the method assessed. CONCLUSION Treatment with ISFPPs alters the masticatory laterality, moving it to the treated side and increasing the degree of bilateral chewing in patients with unilateral posterior missing teeth.
