Abstract
OBJECTIVE Congenital cytomegalovirus infection (cCMV) is a common, frequently unrecognized cause of childhood disability. The aim of the present study was to determine the symptoms that raise the suspicion of cCMV, define the neurodevelopmental outcomes, and assess their correlations. METHODS This longitudinal observational study comprised 78 children with symptomatic cCMV who underwent neuropediatric follow-up for 4 to 17.9 years. RESULTS Symptoms of central nervous system involvement, hearing/visual impairments, and hepatic involvement were mostly recognized. The average age of disease suspicion was 3.3 months. In terms of outcomes, 10.53% of the children developed complex minor neurological dysfunction and 23.68% developed cerebral palsy. Visual and hearing impairments occurred in 38.16% and 14.47% of patients, respectively. Intellectual disability was present in 30.26% of patients, and epilepsy in 21.05%. Microcephaly and hearing impairment was significantly associated with overall neurodevelopmental outcome. Microcephaly was also associated with poor motor outcomes, hearing impairment, and severe visual impairment. Furthermore, microcephaly and intrauterine growth restriction were significantly associated with poor cognitive outcomes. CONCLUSION Symptoms that raised the suspicion of cCMV-especially microcephaly, hearing impairment, and intrauterine growth restriction-were important parameters that were associated with outcomes; however, their recognition was often insufficient and/or late.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Cerebral palsy is a diagnostic term utilized to describe a group of permanent disorders affecting movement and posture. Patients with cerebral palsy are often only capable of limited activity, resulting from non-progressive disturbances in the fetal or neonatal brain. These disturbances severely impact the child's daily life and impose a substantial economic burden on the family. Although cerebral palsy encompasses various brain injuries leading to similar clinical outcomes, the understanding of its etiological pathways remains incomplete owing to its complexity and heterogeneity. This review aims to summarize the current knowledge on the genetic factors influencing cerebral palsy development. It is now widely acknowledged that genetic mutations and alterations play a pivotal role in cerebral palsy development, which can be further influenced by environmental factors. Despite continuous research endeavors, the underlying factors contributing to cerebral palsy remain are still elusive. However, significant progress has been made in genetic research that has markedly enhanced our comprehension of the genetic factors underlying cerebral palsy development. Moreover, these genetic factors have been categorized based on the identified gene mutations in patients through clinical genotyping, including thrombosis, angiogenesis, mitochondrial and oxidative phosphorylation function, neuronal migration, and cellular autophagy. Furthermore, exploring targeted genotypes holds potential for precision treatment. In conclusion, advancements in genetic research have substantially improved our understanding of the genetic causes underlying cerebral palsy. These breakthroughs have the potential to pave the way for new treatments and therapies, consequently shaping the future of cerebral palsy research and its clinical management. The investigation of cerebral palsy genetics holds the potential to significantly advance treatments and management strategies. By elucidating the underlying cellular mechanisms, we can develop targeted interventions to optimize outcomes. A continued collaboration between researchers and clinicians is imperative to comprehensively unravel the intricate genetic etiology of cerebral palsy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a leading cause of congenital infections. Dried blood spots (DBS) collected in the first week of life (Guthrie cards) have been used in the diagnosis of CMV infection outside the three-week window period following birth. The present work summarizes the results of a 15-year observational study in which DBS from 1388 children were used for a late diagnosis of congenital CMV infection. METHODS Three groups of children were studied: (i) symptomatic (with symptoms at birth or late sequelae) (N = 779); (ii) born to mothers with serological profile of primary CMV infection (N = 75); (iii) without any information (N = 534). A highly sensitive method of DNA extraction (heat-induced) from the DBS was used. CMV DNA was detected by a nested PCR. RESULTS In total CMV DNA was detected in 7.5% (104/1388) of children. Symptomatic children showed a low rate of CMV DNA detection (6.7%) than children born to mothers with serological profile of primary CMV infection (13.3%) (p = 0.034). Sensorial hearing loss and encephalopathy were the two clinical manifestations with the highest CMV detection rate (18.3% and 11.1%, respectively). Children whose mothers had a confirmed primary infection showed a higher rate of CMV detection (35.3%) when compared with children whose mothers had a not confirmed primary infection (6.9%) (p = 0.007). CONCLUSION The present work emphasises the importance of testing DBS in symptomatic children even a long time after symptoms onset and in children born to mothers with serologic diagnosis of maternal primary CMV infection when they miss the diagnosis during the three-week window following birth.

Abstract
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most common cause of congenital infection, affecting 1% of all live births. Intrauterine infection such as CMV infection is a risk factor for developing cerebral palsy. This study aims to investigate the association between congenital CMV infection and the development of cerebral palsy. A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science and Ovid SP to identify relevant studies. The quality of studies was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. The random-effect model was used to calculate the pooled prevalence. The generic inverse variance method was used for statistical analysis. A total of 12 studies were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The overall pooled prevalence of cerebral palsy among patients diagnosed with congenital CMV infection was 26% (95% confidence interval (CI), 13-40%). The overall pooled prevalence of congenital CMV infection among patients with cerebral palsy was 10.9% (95% CI, 5-16%). Congenital CMV infection was significantly associated with the development of cerebral palsy in children. Routine follow-ups should be offered to screen for cerebral palsy.

Abstract
Aims Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a preventable cause of neurodevelopmental disability. Australian guidelines recommend that pregnant women are informed about CMV to reduce their risk of infection; however, less than 10% of maternity health professionals routinely provide prevention advice. The aim was to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of an eLearning course for midwives to improve knowledge and confidence about CMV. Materials and Methods Participants undertaking the course between March and November 2020 were invited to complete an evaluation questionnaire: before the course (T1), immediately after (T2) and three months post completion (T3). A linear mixed model was used to evaluate change in participant scores; P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results Midwives (316/363, 87%), midwifery students (29/363, 8%) and nurses (18/363, 5%) participated. At T1 80% indicated they had not received education about CMV. Total adjusted mean scores for questionnaires completed between T1 (n = 363) and T2 (n = 238) increased significantly (from 17.2 to 22.8, P < 0.001). Limited available T3 scores (n = 27) (−1.7, P < 0.001), while lower than T2, remained higher than at T1 (+3.6, P < 0.001). Participants’ awareness of CMV information resources improved from 10 to 97% from T1 to T2. Confidence in providing CMV advice increased from 6 to 95% between T1 and T2 (P < 0.001) and was maintained at T3. Almost all (99%) participants indicated they would recommend the course to colleagues. Conclusion Participants who completed the eLearning course had significantly improved knowledge and confidence in providing advice about CMV. Programs targeting other maternity health professionals should be considered, to further support the implementation of the congenital CMV prevention guidelines.

Abstract
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a ubiquitous virus, and CMV-associated diseases range from mild illness in immunologically normal hosts to life-threatening diseases in newborns and immunocompromised children. This study investigated the association between childhood CMV infection and subsequent epilepsy or neurodevelopmental disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A retrospective analysis was performed on data for 69 children with confirmed CMV infections (CMV infection group) and 292 patients with other infections (control group) between 1 January 2006 to 31 December 2012. The results indicated that the CMV infection group had a higher risk of epilepsy in comparison to the control (odds ratio (OR), 16.4; 95% CI (confidence interval), 3.32–80.7; p = 0.001). Epilepsy risk increased in younger children (age 0–2) with CMV infection when compared to the control group (OR, 32.6; 95% CI, 3.84–276; p = 0.001). The ASD risk was also determined to be higher in the CMV infection group (OR, 17.9; 95% CI, 1.96–162; p = 0.01). The ADHD risk between the groups was not significant. This study suggests that CMV infection in infancy may increase the risk of subsequent epilepsy and ASD, especially in infants younger than 2 years, but is not associated with ADHD.

The Limitations of Cytomegalovirus DNA Detection in Cerebrospinal Fluid of Newborn Infants With Congenital CMV Infection: A Tertiary Care Neonatal Center Experience. Abstract
BACKGROUND Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) infection of the central nervous system (CNS) can cause ventriculomegaly, gliosis, calcifications and cortical defects. Detection of CMV DNA in cerebrospinal fluid by PCR (CSF-CMV-PCR) is a marker of CNS involvement. OBJECTIVE To evaluate a diagnostic value of the positive CSF-CMV-PCR in cCMV. METHODS Analysis of clinical, laboratory, neuroimaging and single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) data according to the results of CSF-CMV-PCR were performed in infants with cCMV. RESULTS A total of 168 infants were included; 145 (86.3%) had negative and 23 (13.7%) had positive CSF-CMV-PCR results. Associations between the positive CSF-CMV-PCR results and prematurity (odds ratio [OR] = 3.24; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.30-8.07), microcephaly (OR = 5.67; 95% CI: 2.08-15.41), seizures (OR = 4.15; 95% CI: 1.10-15.67), sensorineural hearing loss (OR = 6.6; 95% CI: 2.49-17.46), splenomegaly (OR = 8.13; 95% CI: 3.12-21.16), hepatitis (OR = 10.51; 95% CI: 3.31-33.35), petechiae (OR = 10.21; 95% CI: 3.78-27.57) and heterozygous T/C genotype at TLR4rs4986791 (OR = 7.88; 95% CI: 1.55-40.12) were observed. When using a multivariate logistic regression analysis, only the presence of severe sensorineural hearing loss (OR = 7.18; 95% CI: 1.75-29.34, P = 0.006), cystic lesions on MRI (OR 5.29; 95% CI: 1.31-21.36, P = 0.02), and calcifications on MRI (OR = 7.19; 95% CI: 1.67-30.97, P = 0.008) remained as the significant independent predictors of the positive CSF-CMV-PCR results. CONCLUSIONS The detection of CMV DNA in CSF is associated with a higher rate of CNS damage including abnormal MRI neuroimaging and severe hearing loss. Therefore, detection of CMV DNA in CSF may be considered as a marker of severe CNS injury in cCMV infection. However, the very low prevalence of the positive CSF-CMV-PCR results, even in infants with proven CNS involvement, may imply its limited role in clinical practice.

Abstract
Background Abundant clinical evidences indicate that the increased risk of cerebral palsy (CP) may be associated with the intrauterine exposure to maternal infection. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a common cause of CP. However, little is known about the relationship between the intrauterine exposure of the fetus to CMV infection and CP. This study aims to explore the relationships between intrauterine CMV infection and clinical symptoms, classification, intelligence development and brain neuroimaging findings in children with CP. Methods In this study, 147 children with CP in recent 6 years were retrospectively analyzed (average age: 14.76 ± 3.07months; sex (M/F): 103/44). 148 children had CMV IgG and IgM positive sera identified by TORCH examination were selected as the control group (average age: 15.10 ± 3.21months; sex (M/F): 102/46), which also undergo the examination of CMV-DNA in urine. The age and sex of children in the control group were matched with those in the CP group. CMV-DNA in urine was detected by CMV fluorescence quantitative PCR, and t-test was performed to analyze the number of copies. For the CP group, standardized rehabilitation treatment was performed and the function of gross motor was evaluated by GMFM scale before and after treatment. The Gesell developmental scale (GDS) was used to assess the level of intellectual development. The classification of CP was conducted and the results of magnetic resonance imaging were analyzed. Finally, the correlations between the copy number of CMV-DNA and the clinical characteristics of children with CP were evaluated by the method of Pearson and Spearman correlation analysis. Results The level of CMV infection was negatively correlated with the developmental quotient (DQ) of children with CP. Negative association was found between the level of CMV infection and the level of the gross motor development. The level of CMV infection was positively related with the occurrence probability of spastic quadriplegia. However, no associations were found between the abnormalities of brain tissue and the number of CMV copies. Moreover, CMV infection might add the difficulty of the rehabilitation treatment. Conclusions CMV infection is a risk factor for the occurrence of CP in children. Pregnancy examination should be strengthened. Early detection and control of CMV infection may contribute to the rehabilitation of children with CP and reduce the disability and social burden.

Abstract
Aggregation of immuno-proteomic data reveals that i) herpesviruses and synaptic proteins -in particular Synapsin-1 and Bassoon - share a large number of hexapeptides that also recur in hundreds of epitopes experimentally validated as immunopositive in the human host, and ii) the shared peptides are also spread among human epilepsy-related proteins. The data indicate that cross-reactive processes may be associated with pathogenetic mechanisms in epilepsy, thus suggesting a role of autoimmunity in etiopathology of epilepsies after herpesvirus-infections.

Abstract
AIM To investigate the impact of socio-economic disadvantage on indicators of cerebral palsy (CP) severity - motor impairment, intellectual disability, and the presence of severe comorbidities - in children with CP in Australia. METHOD Data from the Australian Cerebral Palsy Register were analysed. Socio-economic disadvantage was assessed using maternal age, maternal country of birth, and a measure of neighbourhood socio-economic status (SES) at the time of the child's birth. Descriptive bivariate analysis, trend analysis, risk ratios, and mediation analysis were undertaken to examine the impact of disadvantage on the indicators of CP severity. RESULTS A socio-economic gradient was demonstrated with an increasing proportion of children with non-ambulant status, at least moderate intellectual disability, and the presence of severe comorbidities (having epilepsy, functional blindness, bilateral deafness, and/or no verbal communication) with decreasing neighbourhood SES, adolescent motherhood, and maternal minority ethnicity. INTERPRETATION In Australia, socio-economic disadvantage at birth impacts adversely on CP severity at age 5 years. By identifying that socio-economically disadvantaged children with CP are at greater risk of more severe functional outcomes, we can inform targeted interventions at the family and neighbourhood level to reduce these inequities for children with CP. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS Socio-economic disadvantage is associated with increased severity of cerebral palsy functional outcomes. This encompasses low neighbourhood socio-economic status, adolescent motherhood, and maternal minority ethnicity.

Abstract
Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most prevalent, severe and costly motor disability of childhood. Consequently, CP is a public health priority for prevention, but its aetiology has proved complex. In this Review, we summarize the evidence for a decline in the birth prevalence of CP in some high-income nations, describe the epidemiological evidence for risk factors, such as preterm delivery and fetal growth restriction, genetics, pregnancy infection and other exposures, and discuss the success achieved so far in prevention through the use of magnesium sulfate in preterm labour and therapeutic hypothermia for birth-asphyxiated infants. We also consider the complexities of disentangling prenatal and perinatal influences, and of establishing subtypes of the disorder, with a view to accelerating the translation of evidence into the development of strategies for the prevention of CP.

Abstract
Both sex (i.e., biological differences) and gender (i.e., social or cultural influences) impact vaccine acceptance, responses, and outcomes. Clinical data illustrate that among children, young adults, and aged individuals, males and females differ in vaccine-induced immune responses, adverse events, and protection. Although males are more likely to receive vaccines, following vaccination, females typically develop higher antibody responses and report more adverse effects of vaccination than do males. Human, nonhuman animal, and in vitro studies reveal numerous immunological, genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors that differ between males and females and contribute to sex- and gender-specific vaccine responses and outcomes. Herein, we address the impact of sex and gender variables that should be considered in preclinical and clinical studies of vaccines.

Abstract
PROBLEM Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is one of the most commonly diagnosed neurodevelopmental disorders in the United States. While ASD can be significantly influenced by genetics, prenatal exposure to maternal infections has also been implicated in conferring risk. Despite this, the effects of several important maternal pathogens, such as cytomegalovirus (CMV) and herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV2), remain unknown. METHOD OF STUDY We tested whether maternal CMV and/or HSV2 sero-positivity was associated with ASD symptoms in children. ELISA was used to assay for CMV IgG and HSV2 IgG in serum from the mothers of 82 children whose ASD symptoms were assessed at 3-6 years of age using the Social Responsiveness Scale version 2 (SRS-2). RESULTS Associations between maternal viral serostatus and SRS-2 scores were estimated using linear regression with covariate adjustments. The children of mothers sero-positive for CMV, but not for HSV2, had SRS-2 scores 3.6-4.2 points higher, depending on the adjustment model, than sero-negative women, a significant finding, robust to several statistical adjustments. CONCLUSION Our results suggest that maternal CMV infections may influence ASD symptoms. These findings are being further evaluated in ongoing prospective studies with larger population samples.

Abstract
Initial reports of congenital Zika virus (ZIKV) infection focused on microcephaly at birth with severe brain anomalies; the phenotype has broadened to include microcephaly that develops after birth and neurodevelopmental sequelae. In this narrative review, we summarize medical literature describing motor abnormalities and epilepsy in infants with evidence of congenital ZIKV infection and provide information on the impact of these conditions. Specific scenarios are used to illustrate the complex clinical course in infants with abnormalities that are consistent with congenital Zika syndrome. A search of the English-language medical literature was done to identify motor abnormalities and epilepsy in infants with evidence of congenital ZIKV infection by using Medline and PubMed, Embase, Scientific Electronic Library Online, Scopus, the OpenGrey Repository, and the Grey Literature Report in Public Health. Search terms included "Zika" only and "Zika" in combination with any of the following terms: "epilepsy," "seizure," "motor," and "cerebral palsy." Clinical features of motor abnormalities and epilepsy in these children were reviewed. Thirty-six publications were identified; 8 were selected for further review. Among infants with clinical findings that are consistent with congenital Zika syndrome, 54% had epilepsy and 100% had motor abnormalities. In these infants, impairments that are consistent with diagnoses of cerebral palsy and epilepsy occur frequently. Pyramidal and extrapyramidal motor abnormalities were notable for their early development and co-occurrence. Prompt identification of potential disabilities enables early intervention to improve the quality of life for affected children. Long-term studies of developmental outcomes and interventions in children with congenital ZIKV infection are needed.

Abstract
Congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) infections cause more children to have permanent disabilities than Down Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, Spina Bifida, and pediatric HIV/AIDS combined. The risk of infection during pregnancy can be significantly decreased using universal precautions, such as thorough handwashing and cleansing of surfaces and objects that have come into contact with infected body fluids. Children under 3 years of age are commonly asymptomatic excretors of CMV, with the highest viral loads present in saliva. Pediatric therapists have regular close contact with young children, and are thus likely at elevated occupational risk of acquiring CMV. Our objective was to evaluate therapist knowledge of cCMV and its transmission. We recruited American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) and American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) members via electronic newsletters and printed flyers from April to September 2015. Participants completed an online, anonymous 24-question survey using Survey Monkey. We compared responses between groups and previously published CMV awareness data using binomial tests of difference of proportions and multiple logistic regression. Our study identified both a low level of therapist awareness and poor demonstrated understanding of cCMV. Self-reported cCMV awareness amongst therapists was greater than awareness in the general population, and equivalent to awareness amongst health care professionals. Whereas 52% of participants self-reported awareness of cCMV, only 18% demonstrated understanding of the behavioral modes of CMV transmission. Fewer therapists reported awareness of cCMV than other, less prevalent conditions. Higher levels of health risk knowledge were associated with greater contact with children. Most participants reported learning about cCMV from the workplace. The knowledge gaps between self-reported awareness of cCMV and demonstrated understanding of modes of transmission described by our results emphasize the need for additional training of therapists. cCMV is preventable, and accurate knowledge of modes of transmission is crucial for the health of practitioners and clients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To determine the proportion of children with cerebral palsy (CP) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA detected retrospectively in their newborn screening cards (NBSC), to compare the proportion of children with CMV DNA in their NBSC across spastic subtypes of CP, and to compare the sex and other characteristics of children with CP and CMV detected on their NSBC with those in whom CMV DNA was not detected. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective observational study. Data were extracted from patient records on children with CP (birth years 1996-2014) from 2 Australian state CP registers and state-wide paediatric rehabilitation services with consent. NBSCs were retrospectively analyzed for CMV DNA by nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using primers against gB. Positive samples were validated using real time PCR for CMV UL83. RESULTS Of 401 children recruited, 323 (80.5%) had an available NBSC. Of these, 31 (9.6%; 95% CI, 6.8-13.3) tested positive for CMV DNA by nested PCR for CMV gB, of whom 28 (8.7%; 95% CI, 6.1-12.2) also had CMV DNA detected by real-time PCR for CMV UL83. Detection of CMV DNA was significantly associated with epilepsy, but not with clinical or epidemiologic characteristics, including sex and pattern of spasticity. CONCLUSIONS CMV viremia in the newborn period, indicating congenital CMV infection, is highly prevalent among children with CP. Further research is needed to investigate the mechanisms and contribution of congenital CMV to the causal pathways to CP.

Abstract
AIM Our aim was to build on previous research indicating that rates of cerebral palsy (CP) in the Australian state of Victoria are declining, and examine whether severity of impairments is also decreasing. METHOD Data on individuals with CP were extracted from the Victorian Cerebral Palsy Register for birth years 1983 to 2009. The yearly rates of dichotomized categories for gross motor function, motor laterality, intellectual impairment, and epilepsy per 1000 neonatal survivors and proportions in the CP cohort were tabulated and plotted by birth gestation. Linear regression modelling was used to fit prediction curves; likelihood ratio tests were used to test for differences in trends between impairment severity groups. RESULTS Since the mid-1990s, CP rates declined in neonatal survivors of birth at all gestations. Our data suggest that the decreasing CP rates were associated with relatively greater decreases in the rates of Gross Motor Function Classification System levels III to V, bilateral CP, epilepsy, and intellectual impairment (all p<0.005). Some variation was seen between birth gestation groups. INTERPRETATION Declines in rates of CP of all levels of severity and complexity from the mid-1990s provides 'real-world' support for the effectiveness of concurrent neuroprotective strategies and continual innovation in perinatal practices.

Abstract
AIM Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is an important cause of congenital infection, which can result in neonatal deaths or contribute to deaths in later childhood. Post-natally acquired CMV is a less common cause of disease and mortality, and only in preterm infants or immunocompromised children. Here we sought to describe CMV as a direct or secondary contributor to childhood mortality in Australia. METHOD We searched national mortality data sets between1999 and 2011 for cases <15 years with CMV recorded as an underlying or contributing cause of death. RESULTS Eighty-three CMV-associated deaths in children <15 years were identified (0.2 cases per 100 000 <15 years; 95% confidence interval 0.16-0.24). Childhood deaths associated with CMV were evenly distributed between males and females, and the majority (n = 57; 68%) occurred in children less than 12 months of age, with 22 cases <1 month of age. Over the 13-year study period, the mortality rate remained stable and CMV resulted in an estimated age-adjusted 5925 years of potential life lost. CONCLUSIONS CMV makes a small but important contribution to childhood mortality in Australia. Most CMV-related deaths occurred in infants <12 months of age. These infant deaths may be an indirect marker of the burden of severe intrauterine CMV disease given the natural history of this infection.

Abstract
The aims of this study were to provide a comprehensive summary of the body of research disseminated by Cerebral Palsy (CP) registries and surveillance programs from January 2009 through May 2014 in order to describe the influence their results have on our overall understanding of CP. Secondly, registries/surveillance programs and the work they produced were evaluated and grouped using standardized definitions and classification systems. METHOD A systematic review search in PubMed, CINAH and Embase for original articles published from 1 January 2009 to 20 May 2014 originating from or supported by population based CP registries and surveillance programs or population based national registries including CP were included. Articles were grouped by 2009 World CP Registry Congress aim, registry/surveillance program classification, geographical region, and the International Classification of Function, Disability and Health (ICF) domain. Registry variables were assessed using the ICF-CY classification. RESULTS Literature searches returned 177 articles meeting inclusion criteria. The majority (69%) of registry/surveillance program productivity was related to contributions as a Resource for CP Research. Prevention (23%) and Surveillance (22%) articles were other areas of achievement, but fewer articles were published in the areas of Planning (17%) and Raising the Profile of CP (2%). There was a range of registry/surveillance program classifications contributing to this productivity, and representation from multiple areas of the globe, although most of the articles originated in Europe, Australia, and Canada. The domains of the ICF that were primarily covered included body structures and function at the early stages of life. Encouragingly, a variety of CP registry/surveillance program initiatives included additional ICF domains of participation and environmental and personal factors. INTERPRETATION CP registries and surveillance programs, including novel non-traditional ones, have significantly contributed to the understanding of how CP affects individuals, families and society. Moving forward, the global CP registry/surveillance program community should continue to strive for uniformity in CP definitions, variables collected and consistency with international initiatives like the ICF so that databases can be consolidated for research use. Adaptation to new technologies can improve access, reduce cost and facilitate information transfer between registrants, researchers and registries/surveillance programs. Finally, increased efforts in documenting variables of individuals with CP into adulthood should be made in order to expand our understanding of CP across the lifespan.
