A theoretical model of contraceptive decision-making and behaviour in diabetes: A qualitative application of the Health Belief Model

Racial and Ethnic Disparities in Patient Experience and Diabetes Self-Management Among Nonpregnant Women of Childbearing Age With Diabetes in the United States: A Scoping Review, 1990 to 2020

OBJECTIVE

This scoping review aimed to identify any empirical literature describing racial and ethnic disparities in patient experience and diabetes self-management among nonpregnant women (aged 18-49 years) of childbearing age with diabetes in the United States.

METHODS

This scoping review followed the Arksey and O'Malley methodological framework. We used a comprehensive search strategy to identify articles published from 1990 to 2021 in PubMed, CINAHL, EMBASE, Web of Science, the Cochrane Library, and Proquest Digital Dissertation and Theses. Two independent reviewers used Covidence, a web-based review management software, to screen articles by title and abstract, and then by full-text articles based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. A third reviewer arbitrated any disagreements.

RESULTS

Of the original 6,115 peer-reviewed studies identified, eight fit the eligibility criteria. In research on nonpregnant women of childbearing age in the United States, four studies investigated racial and ethnic disparities in patient experience, and seven of the eight eligible studies investigated racial and ethnic disparities in diabetes self-management outcomes. No eligible studies examining racial and ethnic variations in the association between patient experience and diabetes self-management were found.

CONCLUSIONS

This scoping review identified limited available studies examining racial and ethnic disparities in patient experience and diabetes self-management among nonpregnant women of childbearing age in the United States. Future studies should examine these relationships to fill the gap in research. These findings are relevant as the prevalence of diabetes is increasing worldwide and racially/ethnically minoritized women are disproportionately affected.

Predictors of Influenza Vaccination among Chinese Middle School Students Based on the Health Belief Model: A Mixed-Methods Study

Influenza vaccination rates among Chinese middle school students are low. This study aims to explore the influencing factors of vaccination among middle school students and promote vaccination. We conducted a mixed-methods study, integrating a questionnaire survey among 9145 middle school students in four cities in China and semi-structured interviews with 35 middle school students to understand their attitudes and perceptions toward vaccination based on the Health Belief Model. We found the overall vaccination rate was 38.2% (3493/9145), with students in Beijing, boarding at school, or senior high school showing higher values than their counterparts (p < 0.05). Multiple logistic regression results showed that non-boarding (OR = 0.46, 95%CI: 0.42−0.51) and perceived barriers (OR = 0.97, 95%CI: 0.96−0.98) were unfavorable factors for influenza vaccination, whereas perceived susceptibility (OR = 1.07, 95%CI: 1.05−1.08), perceived benefits (OR = 1.02, 95%CI: 1.01−1.04), cues to action (OR = 1.08, 95%CI: 1.05−1.11), and self-efficacy (OR = 1.04, 95%CI: 1.02−1.07) were facilitators. Qualitative results indicated that positive health beliefs, school, and the home environment contribute to vaccination. In conclusion, the influenza vaccination rate among middle school students remains low. The concerns about the safety and potential side effects of vaccines are the main barriers to vaccination, underscoring the need for strengthening communication, education, and information among students and their teachers/parents.

Consumer acceptance of autonomous delivery robots for last-mile delivery: Technological and health perspectives

The unprecedented outbreak of the novel coronavirus has led to a great shift toward online retailing and accelerated the need for contactless delivery. This study investigates how technological and health belief factors influence consumer acceptance of autonomous delivery robots (ADRs). Anchored in four behavioral theories [i.e., technology acceptance model, health belief model, perceived value (VAL) theory and trust theory], a synthesized model is developed. A total of 500 valid responses were collected through an online questionnaire in Singapore, and structural equation modeling was conducted to examine the responses. The results revealed that perceived ease of use (EOU), perceived usefulness (UFN), perceived susceptibility (SUS), perceived severity (SEV), self-efficacy (SEL) and cues to action (CUE) have a positive and significant influence on consumers' perceptions of the value of ADRs. The total effect analysis also showed that perceived VAL strongly affects consumer acceptance of ADRs. Academically, this study introduces both technological and health belief factors to explain consumer acceptance of ADRs. It also provides recommendations for policymakers and autonomous delivery robot developers on policy formulation, public communication, product design and infrastructure development.
