Abstract
A filler composed of calcium hydroxylapatite and carboxymethylcellulose gel (CaHA/CMC) has been shown to possess biostimulatory and skin-tightening properties that have been applied not just to the face but also to the body to boost rejuvenation. Recently, evidence and recommendations for CaHA/CMC treatment of the face have been provided, but they are still lacking in terms of body treatment. This article aims to perform a systematic review of the literature on CaHA/CMC applications on the body and provide evidence from the literature. Currently, the only FDA-approved indication on the body is treating the hands and a recent European Union Medical Device Regulation approval has been released for decolletage treatment. The application of hyperdilutions on the neck, feet, arms, thighs, abdomen, and other body parts has been proven to provide a skin-tightening effect. However, despite their wide use with a good safety profile in clinical practice, recent trends and guidelines of diluted and hyperdiluted CaHA/CMC have yet to be supported by randomized controlled trials.

Abstract
Radiesse® is a filler composed of calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres suspended in a carboxymethylcellulose gel (CaHA/CMC). It has robust rheological properties that have been associated with its versatility. CaHA/CMC is employed for both on-label indications of filling wrinkles or lines, volumizing, and contouring of areas as well as off-label indications aiming at biostimulation and skin tightening. However, despite the expanding use of CaHA/CMC, overall evidence and recommendations for treatment are currently lacking. This paper aims to provide an up-to-date overview of CaHA/CMC clinical applications, together with a level of evidence of supporting literature, focusing on the face. Based on the data, CaHA/CMC may be considered a safe and effective treatment option for cheeks, jawline, HIV-related facial lipoatrophy, and nasolabial folds. Treatment of marionette lines, chin, pre-jowl, and corner of the mouth also tends to respond with a high degree of efficacy. Despite the recent trend, guidelines, and safety profile of diluted and hyperdiluted Radiesse® , no randomized controlled trials have been published.

Abstract
Laser treatments have become popular in Dermatology. In parallel to technologic development enabling the availability of different laser wavelengths, non-invasive skin imaging techniques, such as reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM), have been used to explore morphologic and qualitative skin characteristics. Specifically, RCM can be applied to cosmetically sensitive skin areas such as the face, without the need for skin biopsies. For these reasons, apart from its current use in skin cancer diagnosis, our systematic review reveals how RCM can be employed in the field of laser treatment monitoring, being particularly suitable for the evaluation of variations in epidermis and dermis, and pigmentary and vascular characteristics of the skin. This systematic review article aims to provide an overview on current applications of RCM laser treatment monitoring, while describing RCM features identified for different applications. Studies on human subjects treated with laser treatments, monitored with RCM, were included in the current systematic review. Five groups of treatments were identified and described: skin rejuvenation, scar tissue, pigmentary disorders, vascular disorders and other. Interestingly, RCM can assist treatments with lasers targeting all chromophores in the skin and exploiting laser induced optical breakdown. Treatment monitoring encompasses assessment at baseline and examination of changes after treatment, therefore revealing details in morphologic alterations underlying different skin conditions and mechanisms of actions of laser therapy, as well as objectify results after treatment.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The mandibular profile undergoes progressive wasting with aging, and the deepening of nasolabial folds (NLFs) has a leading role. Hyaluronic acid (HA) efficiently controls tissue hydration and permeability to small and large molecules. NLFs are an acknowledged HA target; at the same time, another class of agents, PN-HPT® (Polynucleotides Highly Purified Technology), enjoy growing acknowledgement in aesthetic medicine. This exploratory, prospective study probed the rationale of sequentially associating PN-HPT® as a first priming agent acting in the skin followed by HA dermal filler injections for correcting moderate to severe NLFs. METHODS Following strict inclusion and exclusion criteria, the authors screened Caucasian ambulatory women aged 40-65 with moderate to severe NLFs and randomly selected two NLFs for each enrolled woman. Due to the purely explorative nature of the study, the authors initially planned to enroll no >10 women. According to a split-face design, the selected right-side NLFs received 4 ml of PN-HPT® intradermally in the initial priming phase ("NLF Rx group"); the selected left-side NLFs received 4 ml of saline (placebo) ("NLF Lx group"). After 3 and 6 weeks, all patients received 2 ml of subdermal cross-linked HA over both NLF areas (4 ml overall). The total study follow-up was 6 months after the first injection, with objective assessments, based on the qualitative and quantitative Antera 3D® and Vectra H2® skin imaging technologies, after 6 weeks and 3 and 6 months. RESULTS Because of the favorable early outcomes, the authors let enrollment progress between January and June 2020 up to a total of 20 women and 40 NLFs. All treated women completed the six-month follow-up without reporting side effects, even clinically minor. The Antera 3D® device demonstrated that wrinkles and skin texture significantly improved in the NLF Rx after 6 weeks (monotherapy phase) and 3 and 6 months (PN-HPT® priming + HA phase) compared with baseline. HA levels, measured with the quantitative Vectra H2® assessment technology in the right NLFs, were significantly higher than contralaterally at both 3 and 6 months. CONCLUSIONS Although conceived only as an exploratory investigation, the study confirmed that PN-HPT® monotherapy might be a valuable and effective option to rapidly improve the skin dermis texture and quality in individuals with moderate to severe NLFs. Acting as a priming agent in the skin, PN-HPT® prolong the clinical efficacy of cross-linked HA. Well-designed trials in larger treatment groups will hopefully confirm these early promising results.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim of the present study was to compare the results of fractional microneedle radiofrequency (FMR) therapy in vegan and omnivorous participants. METHODS A total of 30 vegan and 30 omnivorous women who were treated with FMR therapy for combating aging were included in the study. The clinical results were examined in Months 3 and 6 based on the Fitzpatrick Wrinkle Scale (FWS). Individual satisfaction was investigated in Month 6 using the Patient's Global Impression of Change (PGIC). RESULTS At the onset of the treatment, there was no significant difference with regard to the FWS scores in both groups. The decrease in the FWS score was significantly lower in vegans after 3 months (p = 0.01). Vegans had worsened clinical outcomes by Month 6 (p = 0.01). The PGIC scores were significantly lower in vegans (p = 0.01). CONCLUSION A vegan diet adversely affects the outcome of FMR therapy.

Abstract
Despite being a common concern, there are very few minimally invasive treatments targeting neck skin laxity (NSL) reported in the literature. To assess the efficacy of hyperdiluted calcium hydroxyapatite (hy-CaHA) for the treatment of NSL, according to the NSL scale, and to estimate safety. Twenty patients showing NSL were treated with hy-CaHA 1:2. To evaluate the efficacy of hy-CaHA treatment for NSL, pictures of treated subjects were collected before and 3 months after treatment and graded according to the NSL scale, and T-student's test was applied to estimate differences. Hy-CaHA for the neck was effective according to the previously unreported NSL scale (p < 0.001) and safe. There were no major adverse events reported. This study supports the efficacy (according to the NSL scale) and safety of hy-CaHA (1:2) for NSL. Our results also highlight the utility of the newly developed NSL scale, being a useful tool to evaluate the level of NSL before treatment and to measure the outcome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Skin photoaging is related to extrinsic environmental exposures, mainly represented by ultraviolet radiation. One of the treatment options is laser resurfacing. As nutritional status is involved in cutaneous photodamage, we evaluated whether dietary patterns can also influence the response to facial resurfacing. Our prospective multicentric study involves three dermatologic centers specialized in laser therapy in northern Italy. The study aims to compare the outcome of a CO2 ablative laser therapy between omnivore and vegan patients. STUDY DESIGN/MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifty-three omnivore and fifty-three vegan women undergoing ultrapulsed CO2 resurfacing for photodamaged facial skin were enrolled in this study. Clinical improvement was evaluated 3 and 6 months after the treatment using the modified Dover score. RESULTS After laser treatment, vegans showed slower complete re-epithelialization (P < 0.001*) and disappearance of the erythema (P < 0.001*). After 3 and 6 months, vegans showed worse outcomes in terms of fine lines (P < 0.001* and P < 0.001*, respectively) and tactile roughness (P = 0.003* and P = 0.002*, respectively) compared with omnivores, while they did not differ in mottled pigmentation. CONCLUSIONS The present study suggests that diet influences the clinical outcome of fractioned CO2 laser treatment. Lasers Surg. Med. © 2021 Wiley Periodicals LLC.

Abstract
Few studies showed the role of picosecond laser (PLS) in the treatment of skin photoaging signs. However, no studies have explored the microscopic effects of PSL in photoaging. The aim of this study is to preliminarily identify clinical variations induced by a 1,064 nm Nd:YAG PSL on the décolleté area, then to apply the treatment protocol to treat facial photoaging and estimate the clinical and microscopic outcomes. A total of 10 consecutive patients with cutaneous photoaging were enrolled. Patients were treated 3 times at monthly intervals with the fractionated 1,064 nm Nd:YAG PSL. In a preliminary phase, PSL treatment was performed on the décolleté to establish its efficacy and safety. Then, the same treatment protocol was applied to all the face and clinical and reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) were analyzed, comparing baseline (T0) pictures and 4 months after the treatment (T1) ones. On the face, a reduction of dyschromia and wrinkles was observed at T1. Furthermore, the underlying RCM variations were revealed at different skin levels. Our results show the clinical and microscopic effectiveness and safety of the 1,064-nm Nd:YAG PSL in the treatment of skin photoaging signs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neck aging is usually evaluated together with the lower face. To date, a skin laxity scale for the neck as an independent anatomical district is lacking. OBJECTIVE To create and validate a proposed photonumeric neck skin laxity (NSL) scale. MATERIALS AND METHODS Frontal neck photographic images of 110 subjects were collected. Each standardized neck image was evaluated twice by 3 independent doctors, 1 week apart. A 4-point photonumeric NSL scale was developed (0 = absence of skin laxity and 4 = severe skin laxity) and validated in terms of intraobserver and interobserver correlation and internal consistency. RESULTS The intraobserver reliability analysis of the 2 assessments performed by each observer revealed excellent correlation and consistency of the severity grading, independently of the time of evaluation (from 0.96 to 0.99, p < .01). Furthermore, the interobserver reliability analysis revealed an excellent agreement between the evaluators and an internal consistency independent of the evaluator (0.97, p < .01). CONCLUSION The newly developed NSL scale is a reliable and reproducible scoring system for the aesthetic evaluation of skin laxity of the neck.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clinical outcomes of tattoo removal vary widely among different patients; it is known that tattoo-related features (such as pigments' type or quality, the use of multicolored inks, tattoo location size, location, layering, and duration) and personal habits (as smoking or skin phototype) could influence the clinical response to treatment, the possible role of nutrition in affecting the laser treatment of tattoos has never been investigated. AIMS This study aims to compare the clinical response of tattoos removal between omnivore and vegan patients treated with Q-switched laser (QSL). PATIENTS/METHODS Twenty omnivore and twenty vegan patients treated for professional black tattoo removal with Nd:YAG QSL were enrolled in this study. The number of laser sessions and the median days required for complete healing were recorded; clinical improvement was evaluated 4 weeks after the last laser session. RESULTS The two groups were not different at the baseline in terms of sex, age, skin phototype, tattoos' age, location, and density. Vegans needed more laser sessions (p < 0.001) to achieve the best outcome, showed worst clinical responses (p = 0.001) and needed more days for complete healing (p = 0.006) compared to omnivores. CONCLUSION The results of this study point out the influence of vegan diet on QLS removal of tattoos.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aging of facial structures depends on genetic, anatomic, chronologic, and environmental factors that affect the skin and underlying tissues. Microfocused ultrasound with visualization (MFU-V) has emerged as a safe and effective treatment for skin laxity. As the nutritional status may contribute to skin aging, it would be interesting to evaluate whether different dietary patterns can also influence the response to MFU-V treatment for skin laxity. AIMS The aim of this study is to compare the outcome of MFU-V therapy between omnivore and vegan patients. METHODS Twenty-seven vegan and twenty-seven omnivorous women who underwent MFU-V treatment for laxity of lower face and neck were enrolled. The clinical outcome was evaluated using the FLR (Facial Laxity Rating) scale after 3 and 6 months from treatment. RESULTS At baseline, no significant differences were found in terms of FLR scale in both treated sites. After 3 months, reduction in FLR scale was significantly lower for vegans both on face (P = .04) and neck (P = .004). At 6 months, vegan patients had a worse clinical outcome on lower face (P = .001) and neck (P < .001). CONCLUSION The present study suggests that a vegan diet may negatively influence the outcome of a MFU-V treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Postsurgical skin healing can result in different scars types, ranging from a fine line to pathologic scars, in relation to patients' intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Although the role of nutrition in influencing skin healing is known, no previous studies investigated if the vegan diet may affect postsurgical wounds. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to compare surgical scars between omnivore and vegan patients. METHODS AND MATERIALS This is a prospective observational study. Twenty-one omnivore and 21 vegan patients who underwent surgical excision of a nonmelanoma skin cancer were enrolled. Postsurgical complications and scar quality were evaluated using the modified Scar Cosmesis Assessment and Rating (SCAR) scale. RESULTS Vegans showed a significantly lower mean serum iron level (p < .001) and vitamin B12 (p < .001). Wound diastasis was more frequent in vegans (p = .008). After 6 months, vegan patients had a higher modified SCAR score than omnivores (p < .001), showing the worst scar spread (p < .001), more frequent atrophic scars (p < .001), and worse overall impression (p < .001). CONCLUSION This study suggests that a vegan diet may negatively influence the outcome of surgical scars.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The melanocortin 1 receptor (MC1R) gene is one of the major determinants of skin pigmentation. It is a highly polymorphic gene and some of its polymorphisms have been related to specific skin phenotypes, increased risk of skin cancers and skin photoageing. Currently, its contribution to changes in dermal features in photo-exposed skin is unknown. OBJECTIVE The main objective of this study is to evaluate the potential correlation between MC1R status and specific healthy photo-exposed skin characteristics. MATERIALS AND METHODS Skin facial features were estimated by evaluation with standard digital photography with automated features count, reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) in 100 healthy women. Skin of the forearms was used as a control. RESULTS The study found an association between RHC MC1R polymorphisms and dermal features in photo-exposed areas being represented by increased vessel density and pixel density in OCT (P = .025 and P = .001, respectively) and increased coarse collagen in RCM (P = .034), as compared to non-RHC subjects. To our knowledge this is previously unreported. Additionally, previously reported correlations between light hair colour and pigmented spots with MC1R RHC polymorphisms have been confirmed. CONCLUSIONS Our results suggest the role of RHC MC1R variants in dermal variations of facial skin, as compared to non-RHC variants. To our knowledge this is previously unreported.

Abstract
Background: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an approved and effective treatment for actinic keratosis (AK). The time of complete skin healing is estimated to range between 5 and 10 days, but the role of nutrition in influencing it has never been evaluated.Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the time of skin healing and side effects in omnivores and vegans treated with PDT for AK.Materials and methods: Thirty omnivore and thirty vegan patients, treated with PDT for AK, were enrolled. Side effects, according to local skin response (LSR) score, were compared after 3, 7, and 30 days; the time of complete skin healing was recorded.Results: At day 3, day 7, and day 30 post treatment, vegan group showed higher total LSR score (p = .008, p < .001, p < .001, respectively), highlighting higher edema and vesiculation at day 3 (p < .001, p = .002, respectively), erythema, desquamation, edema, and vesiculation at day 7 (p < .001, p < .001, p < .001, p < .001, respectively) and erythema and desquamation after 30 days (p < .001, p < .001, respectively). The difference of complete skin healing was statistically significant (p < .001).Conclusions: The present study suggests that diet may have a prognostic and predictive role on PDT outcomes in term of side effects and time of skin repair.
