Abstract
Treating calcified root canals presents significant challenges, as incorrect approaches can result in treatment failure or lead to complications. The necessity for advanced diagnostic and therapeutic tools is often paramount in these situations. This case report demonstrates the successful treatment of two calcified mandibular central incisors, followed up for a period of up to six years. It emphasizes the effectiveness of integrating cone-beam computed tomography, dental operating microscopes, and ultrasonic instruments in the treatment of such challenging cases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Primary teeth are frequently affected by traumatic dental injuries. Root fractures are rare and have a reported incidence of 2% in the primary dentition. Hence, there is limited evidence on this topic. This study aims to evaluate the risk of healing complications in primary teeth with root fracture and to identify possible sequelae in the permanent dentition following root fracture in the primary dentition. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective analysis of a cohort of 53 patients with 74 root fractured primary teeth. The standard follow-up program included clinical and radiographic examination after 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 6 months, and 1 year after the trauma and when the patient was 6 years of age. The following complications were registered: pulp necrosis (PN), pulp canal obliteration (PCO), ankylosis with replacement root resorption (ARR), infection-related root resorption (IRR), premature tooth loss (PTL), and repair-related resorption (RRR). STATISTICS The Kaplan-Meier and Aalen-Johansen estimators were employed. The level of significance was 5%. RESULTS A total of 74 teeth were included. 42 teeth were extracted at the initial examination. Risks estimated after 3 years: PTL 45.9% [95% CI: 28.8-63.0], PCO 12.9% [95% CI: 2.3-23.4], PN 14.9% [95% CI: 3.9-25.9], RRR 2.6% [95% CI: 0.0-7.5]. No teeth showed ARR or IRR. All complications were diagnosed within the first year. Most common sequelae in the permanent dentition was demarcated opacities, with an estimated risk of 20% [95% CI: 8.2-41.3]. CONCLUSIONS There is a low risk of healing complications following a root fracture in the primary dentition. Root fractures often result in early extraction of the coronal fragment. The remaining apical fragment will undergo a physiological resorption. Aside from opacities, there is a low risk of sequelae in the permanent dentition.

Abstract
Dental patient-reported outcomes (dPROs) are self-reported descriptions of a patient's oral health status that are not modified or interpreted by a healthcare professional. Dental patient-reported outcome measures (dPROMs) are objective or subjective measurements used to assess dPROs. In oral healthcare settings, the emphasis on assessing treatment outcomes from the patient's perspective has increased and this is particularly important after traumatic dental injuries (TDIs), as this group of injuries represent the fifth most prevalent disease or condition worldwide. The purpose of this review is to summarize the current use of dPROs and dPROMs in the field of dental traumatology. Oral Health-Related Quality of Life, pain, swelling, aesthetics, function, adverse effects, patient satisfaction, number of clinical visits and trauma-related dental anxiety are the key dPROs following TDIs. Clinicians and researchers should consider the well-being of patients as their top priority and conduct routine evaluations of dPROs using measures that are appropriate, accurate and reflect what is important to the patient. After a TDI, dPROs can assist clinicians and patients to choose the best management option(s) for each individual patient and potentially improve the methodology, design and relevance of clinical studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This article focuses on treatments and complications in patients presenting dental trauma in primary teeth. Treatment alternatives begin with the decision of performing a procedure under clinical settings or pharmacological techniques (PC) in young children. Correct diagnosis and treatment are crucial to maximize the chances of a favorable outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS The files of 320 patients aged 0-9 years who presented to the Erciyes University Faculty of Dentistry Department for dental trauma management in primary teeth were evaluated in between 2018 and 2021 for 3-year period. The following information were extracted from patients' records: injury type, affected teeth, caries condition of the teeth, treatment preferences of the dentists. Additionally postoperative complications and their management were evaluated. RESULTS While 63.1% of the traumatized teeth were caries-free, 35.8% of the teeth had caries. The most frequent dental injuries was simple crown fractures (42.9%), followed by complicated crown fractures (38.5%). Treatments were mostly done in clinical conditions (67.9%) and mostly patients attend regularly to follow-up visits (85.6%). Clinicians prefer more radical treatments under sedation or GA (92.4% extraction of injured tooth). Coronal discoloration was the most common complication, and 35.3% had pulp necrosis for longer term results. CONCLUSION Follow-up decisions made after concussion in the primary teeth might be appropriate for the patient. Examination of the complication status of primary teeth with simple crown fracture injury revealed that 59.5% of patients did not have any complications. Follow-up decisions were found to be appropriate for crowns with coloration alone. CLINICAL RELEVANCE All options should be considered to provide the best care for children after primary tooth trauma; this can be achieved by being informed about the treatment and its consequences, and if necessary, a positive prognosis can be achieved with an interdisciplinary approach.

Abstract
Aims: This case demonstrates the adverse sequelae that can follow a traumatic dental injury at a young age. It also highlights the importance of taking a full history and undertaking a thorough exam, independent of the information in the referral. Case presentation: A 9-year-old boy was referred for treatment of “an extra tooth” and “hypoplastic and non-vital” maxillary left permanent incisors. Examination revealed a sinus tract labial to these incisors (21,22) with increased probing depth. However, the teeth were otherwise normal. The child sustained a fall as a baby and lost one of his primary teeth that was never recovered. Information collected suggested the most likely diagnosis was an undiagnosed complete intrusion of a primary incisor, with subsequent hypoplasia and malalignment in the developing teeth. Management included the removal of the intruded primary tooth and monitoring of the hypoplastic permanent incisors until complete eruption and root maturation. Aesthetic restorations were then provided. The patient was referred for orthodontic correction of the malalignment. Conclusion: Misdiagnosis and inappropriate management of dental trauma can cause additional damage. In this case, endodontic therapy in the permanent incisors was avoided by correct diagnosis. Clinicians have to correctly assess and justify their decisions on each individual case.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Clinical and radiographic sequelae are common following traumatic dental injuries to primary teeth. The aim of this systematic review was to assess the prevalence of such sequelae. MATERIALS AND METHODS Searches were conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, and BBO/LILACS databases as well as the gray literature. The outcome of interest was the prevalence of the most common sequelae following traumatic dental injuries to anterior primary teeth. Observational studies that evaluated such sequelae were included. Data were extracted, and methodological quality was appraised using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist for Studies Reporting Prevalence Data. The number of sequelae per tooth and the total number of teeth evaluated in each study were considered to calculate pooled prevalence rates with 95% confidence intervals (CI). The quality of the evidence was determined using the GRADE approach. RESULTS Twenty-five articles were included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The prevalence of each complication in descending order was as follows: 39.7% crown discoloration (95% CI: 29.52-50.32), 24.3% pulp necrosis with infection (95% CI: 17.34-32.06), 16.2% periapical radiolucency (95% CI: 8.88-25.49), 15.9% premature tooth loss (95% CI: 9.93-23.15), 14.8% pulp canal obliteration (95% CI: 8.46-22.73), 11.9% pathological root resorption (95% CI: 7.68-16.98), 7.1% abscess/fistula (95% CI: 4.4-10.6), and 1.8% ankylosis (95% CI: 0.82-3.17). The certainty of the evidence was very low. CONCLUSIONS Crown discoloration was the most common sequela in injured primary teeth, but this should be interpreted with caution due to the very low certainty of the evidence. Considerable variation was found in the prevalence of each sequela.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM The degree of intrusion is an important aspect to be evaluated when treating children following intrusive luxation. The aim of this retrospective cohort study was to evaluate re-eruption rates and the occurrence of sequelae in intruded primary teeth according to the degree of intrusion. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 238 teeth from 168 patients diagnosed with and treated for intrusion over a 16-year period at a specialized trauma center in South Brazil were included in this study. Patient details, including demographic characteristics, tooth affected, presence of sequelae of trauma during the follow up (pulp necrosis and infection, crown discoloration and abnormal mobility), and any effects on the permanent successors, were collected from their records. Photographs were analyzed to determine the degree of intrusion (Grade I, II, or III) and spontaneous re-eruption during follow up. Re-eruption and occurrence of sequelae according to the degree of intrusion were evaluated using the chi-squared test. The level of significance was set at 5%. RESULTS Most teeth were maxillary central incisors (87.8%) with Grade I intrusion (32.8%). In the first 30 days, 13.1% had signs of re-eruption. After 3-6 months, the frequency of re-eruption increased to 58.7%. Of the teeth evaluated 6 months or more after intrusion, 68% had re-erupted. Total intrusion (Grade III) was associated with pulp necrosis and infection (p = .002), but the degree of intrusion was not associated with the presence of crown discoloration or abnormal mobility. Of the 78 permanent successors evaluated, 52.6% had developmental disturbances. CONCLUSION Most intruded primary teeth re-erupted spontaneously, and the degree of intrusion was associated with a worse prognosis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIM Traumatic dental injuries are common and affect many children. The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the prevalence and characteristics of dental trauma as well as the costs and resource use in a cohort of children aged 1-3 years in low socioeconomic areas (low income and educational level) of Stockholm. MATERIALS AND METHODS Data were extracted from a larger intervention trial and analyzed for the prevalence and other characteristics of dental trauma as well as patient characteristics of children (n = 1346) from six dental clinics in low-income, multicultural areas. Variables describing the trauma, socioeconomic status, direct and indirect costs, and time spent at the emergency visit for the dental trauma were retrieved from the dental records. The study also recorded which healthcare profession handled the first and follow-up visits. RESULTS The prevalence of dental trauma in the study cohort was 8.2%, and higher among boys (n = 71) than girls (n = 39). Boys exhibited a significantly higher risk for dental trauma (OR, 1.76; 95% CI = 1.17-2.65). Maxillary incisors were the teeth most often traumatized, and lateral luxation was the most common diagnosis. The mean time spent per child during the first year following the dental trauma was 36 min, and the mean costs per child were EUR 878. The total average per-child cost (direct and indirect costs) for dental trauma was EUR 2107. Dental visits due to traumatic injuries were significantly less common among children with an immigrant background and in families with an income ≤EUR 2000 per month. CONCLUSIONS Toddlers in families who have a low socioeconomic status, a foreign background, and live in multicultural areas of Stockholm visit dental clinics for traumatic dental injuries less often than non-immigrant children living in families with a high socioeconomic status.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We sought to revise, qualify and summarize the body of evidence based on current information on the known associations and risk factors for traumatic dental injury (TDI) occurrence with an overview of systematic reviews. METHODS Electronic searches were performed with no language nor date restrictions.According to the PECO strategy, systematic reviews that investigated participants (P) with (E) and without (O) the presentation of factors relating to TDI and these factors' association with TDI episodes (O) as primary or secondary outcomes were included. Quality assessment and bias control were carried out according to the AMSTAR 2 checklist. In cases of systematic review results of discordance, the Jadad decision algorithm was applied. RESULTS After titles, abstracts and full texts were read, 19 systematic reviews were included in this overview. Four were classified with critically low, eleven with low and four with moderate methodological quality, respectively. In all studies, 249 cross-sectional, 34 epidemiological surveys, 22 cohort, 9 case-control, 4 longitudinal, 3 ecological and 30 unspecified studies were included. Male gender, child age, greater overjet, inadequate lip coverage, anterior open bite, caries in the permanent dentition, overweight, a previous history of TDI, tongue piercing, the use of alcoholic beverages and participation in sports were all associated with a greater chance of suffering TDI. CONCLUSIONS Sociodemographic, clinical and environmental factors are associated with a greater chance of TDI occurrence. However, most of the systematic reviews included were of a low quality and may not provide an accurate and comprehensive summary of the available research that addresses the question of interest. Well-designed primary studies on different aspects of TDI are encouraged to provide higher quality scientific evidence.

Abstract
A 52-year-old female patient was diagnosed with chronic periapical periodontitis associated with severely calcified lower central incisors. Radiographic examination revealed no visible root canal in the coronal-third of the root. After choosing the guided endodontic treatment, an intraoral scan (Trios, 3shape, Copenhagen, Denmark), in conjunction with a cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scan, was taken in order to design and fabricate a printed guide. Virtual implant software was used to visualize the surgical access into the sclerosed root canals. After locating the canals, the guide was removed, and the teeth were treated under a rubber dam. The guided approach allows predictable, efficient endodontic treatment of teeth presenting calcified canals, with minimal removal of sound dentine and less risk of root perforations.

Abstract
Objective Luxation injuries are one of the most prevalent type traumatic dental injuries in primary dentition. The impact of these injuries may not only be limited to the primary teeth but may also have adverse effects on the developing succedaneous tooth bud resulting in various unfavorable consequences. This systematic review aims at compiling the evidence of available literature regarding luxation injuries to primary teeth, etiology, treatment modalities, outcomes and sequelae on permanent teeth. Methodology Search of PubMed, Google Scholar, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, SCOPUS and LILACS virtual health library was conducted for the literature published from January 1, 2007 to December 31, 2017. Two authors separately reviewed the literature and extracted the data from the included studies. Results After screening 224 articles, 13 articles fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Most common etiological factor for injury (up to 44.8%) is fall while walking or running. The unfavorable outcomes which are mostly associated with luxation injuries are pulp canal obliteration ranging from 8.6% to 43.3% and pulp necrosis 8.6% -78.9%. Sequelae on succedaneous teeth vary with a high incidence of white or yellow brown discoloration of enamel (78%) and enamel hypoplasia (7.8%-28.3%). Conclusion Fall is the most common cause and regular monitoring is recommended for most of the luxated teeth. Pulp canal obliteration, pulp necrosis and tooth loss due to trauma are prevalent complications observed following luxation. White or yellow brown discoloration of enamel and enamel hypoplasia are the most common undesirable sequelae to permanent teeth.

Abstract
Traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) such as subluxations of primary teeth can have significant consequences on their developing successors. The purpose of this report is to present a 3-year-old boy who encountered subluxation injuries to his primary incisors which subsequently had an unusual consequence on the permanent successor. On the day of the TDI, based on clinical and radiographic examinations, a diagnosis of subluxation of teeth 52, 51 and 61 was made. By age 5, the patient reported that tooth 51 had exfoliated, and consequently, tooth 11 had erupted into the oral cavity, but it was very loose. Eventually, the patient lost the crown of tooth 11 during his routine daily activities. Furthermore, radiographic examination at age 11 revealed a small root-like structure in the tooth 11 region. It is very unusual to have premature loss of a permanent incisor following subluxation to its predecessor. Therefore, the present case serves as a good example to emphasize that even minor TDIs are of considerable importance as they may lead to unexpected consequences.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between pulp necrosis and crown discoloration in traumatized primary teeth has not been clearly determined yet. AIM The study verified whether there is an association of pulp necrosis and crown discoloration in traumatized primary teeth through a systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed/Medline, Lilacs/BBO, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library databases, and grey literature. A methodological quality assessment appraisal was independently conducted by two researchers. Random-effects models were employed, and heterogeneity was tested (I2 index/P ≤ 0.05). RESULTS Eight studies with low risk of bias were included in the analysis. A total of 1,494 traumatized primary teeth participated in the pooled meta-analysis. Diagnosis of pulp necrosis was evaluated in 1,414 teeth through clinical and/or radiographic analyses, and the analysis demonstrated a positive association (P = 0.0005/OR 8.37 [2.51, 27.90], I2 = 87%). Eighty teeth were diagnosed with pulp necrosis through endodontic access, and there was no statistically significant association (P = 0.36/OR 2.46 [0.36, 16.94], I2 = 54%). The pooled meta-analysis showed a positive association (P = 0.0003/OR 5.93 [2.24, 15.72], I2 = 83%). CONCLUSION The positive association between pulp necrosis and crown discoloration should be considered with caution once the diagnosis of pulp necrosis was performed by limited criteria.
